This is more than a mistake. The president believes in 'scaled punishment' for offences.
Armed robbers stealing less than Peugeot should go for one year.
Jeep thieves should go for five years and
Hummer thieves should go for seven years.
The moral in this story is simple; a smart thief should steal in little bits, you might not get caught, if you get caught in one instance you wont go for more than a year so you can come back quick to steal again.
If you plan your life well as a thief, you spend twelve years in prison at twelve different times and you retire with a fleet of cars.

Don't forget to read Romans 13:1- 3

Shalom!
Romans 13:1-3 is on suspension in election season.
Democracy is actually against the will of God, his best system of government is theocracy
Out of love he allows us to use democracy to choose our leaders but we face the consequences every time e.g. Jonathan, Shagari
God's permission of democratic elections automatically suspends 13:1-3 until after every swearing in.

I have come to the conclusion that most Nigerians even the so called educated ones don't really know what they want. They say they want an end to corruption and are supporting Buhari who all the promises he has been giving them in his campaign are programs that encourages corruption.
You guys are all wrong.
Dominating the discussion with pro GEJ sentiments, very wrong. There is no extra innovative idea that GEJ has brought into governance and same goes for APC. Shallowness of the populace is what is what is driving the hype. Please listen to Osinbajo talk at the town hall in Edo State. A lot of new and bright ideas many better than GEJ's (Adesina's) ideas in agriculture including guaranteeing a market for all produce at above market prices, good ideas but definitely not innovative in any way. A lot of people were impressed but I was not.
Let me tell you the difference a leader brings to all the broad spectrum of innovative solutions, the difference a leader brings is a clear ideological direction and some system integrity. A stability that guarantees that things work for almost everybody, all the time and in a fair way for everybody and anti corruption guarantees. Even when there are winners and losers nobody loses absolutely. Railways are not innovative, my grandparents rode in it. E-wallet is just technology enablement of a process that always existed, You-Win is another name for what has been existing since time immemorial, when I finished youth service in 1986 gov't was already putting in place entrepreneurial tracks for university graduates. It is lack of corruption and an lack of compromise with inefficiency and slackness that makes the difference.
So many foundational infrastructure elements to a good economy are missing; defence, security, basic industries like Ajaokuta steel, working refineries, power, petrochemicals, etc.. Why are these not working?... corruption and inefficiency. You say private sector is better and then you sell the enterprises to cronies who don't know that business and cannot do better than the former gov't entities.

As we speak, tens of organizations with licenses for refineries have not been able to take off because of sabotage from inside gov't itself. Power generation also same thing, few private generation plants are actually working even when gov't itself has even returned part of the money they paid to buy the plants to them.
Innovative ideas are two for ten Kobo the important thing first is integrity and transparency.

Just answer this question, in apc, in pdp, in Nigeria is he the best we can offer. I said earlier on that JFK put America on the moon, Obama provided Obama care, even Jonah fixed our railway.
Why do you people keep insisting on recycling leaders. I repeat it they have gone out of their way to blow up Nigeria just to make Jonathan looked vulnerable and weak. And it makes me feel sad. The reason why I endorse Jonathan is his ability to atleast fix some things despite all these distractions.

Just answer me is buhari the best we can offer?
Why should coup plotters be allowed to govern us?
Am in my 30's when will my generation rule Nigeria. Gowon was in his 30's when he ruled naija. What about you?
Buhari is not the best we can offer. Jonathan is even less so. But let me tell you something, sometimes in life you take what is the best available.
Corruption is a big problem, do you know 50% of Nigeria's inadequate budget is stolen?'
However when we say the truth people get angry.
1. Should Jonathan have been the VP nominee to Yaradua?.NO
The man was completely unprepared for the office and admitted as much to American diplomats at various meeting then.
2. Coup plotters becoming president is unfortunate but that is the nature of Nigerians. No principles. Your President was also at the home of a coup plotter and he even called him Papa.
APC chose Buhari on the basis of incorruptibility and acceptance in the north but there were better people who die not have the votes, Colonel Umar in the north who could have been better. Then there was the Buharinappeal of serially contesting but the most important reason is not less than 12 million votes guaranteed so obviously there was a lot more at play.
3. Your generation has to get serious and be politically active. You guys are the most de radicalized set of young people the country has ever seen. To be honest, Jonah is not the best option for us. But when compared to buhari, tah the difference is clear.

How can president Jonathan just be lucky, he gas fixed most roads, our railways, created 9 Fed universities, just to mention a few.
There is freedom of speech, movement and association.

Regarding the insurgency, when buhari came out to support boko haram and say that Jonathan is bombing them via ihejirika I totally write him off. His statements don't show sincerity.
Nigeria has always had security issues since the time of abacha, if most of our past leaders had addressed the insecurity in our nation we won't be here.

Now let me ask you if we had democracy since 1983, can you imagine how our lives would be?
Let's be real, some people supporting buhari can't remember what it meant to live under military dictatorship. Do you think you could express yourself like this during the military era?

For 8yrs obasanjo couldn't fix the railways, couldn't create Fed universities. Yet he had experience, was a former head of state. Now you actually think buhari can represent us.
JFK Kennedy was in his 40's when he sent America to the moon. Cameron and Obama both took office in their 40's, when will our generation lead Nigeria, please tell me.
They are lying to you and it is working g because you all are the Abacha generation kids. What do you mean Jonathan is fixing? Has Nigeria ever stopped fixing?'
People are comparing a well resourced civillian regime with the worst of the military and giving it fake good marks. As a young primary school pupil in the seventies I never for once stopped seeing new construction, New roads, plants, railways, airports and so on... till Babangida and Abacha came in. It was part of school quiz to know which projects were going on and when they would be completed. My major problem with Jonathan is corruption and hoodwinking people triple financed projects with a lot of corruption and almost getting away with it because after all there is something o show.

It is becoming ridiculous what people are doing. Babangida and Abacha destroyed Nigeria and we are just getting out of it but don't compare a civilian regime with those regimes start giving marks that are not deserved.

Has Amaechi not developed PH, has Akpabio not developed Akwa Ibom what about the most difficult of the lot, Lagos?. When you give undeserved praise to a government that made $500bn in oil and gas over 5 years and is delivering basic, shoddy infrastructure then you are encouraging mediocrity.

I had the same anger at Buhari' s PTF during Abacha regime and all the praises heaped on the body that after all.we're giving us what we deserved citizens. Infrastructure is not the business of political administrations, they should run as long term projects independent of whoever is in power. No political party should e allowed to stop a project t that is in the long term plan and frankly no party deserves credit for infrastructure. If Buhari wins in February he is going to be commissioning a lot of projects started in Jonathan's admin most note worthy might be the New Niger Bridge but only a big IDIOT would give him credit.

Please travel outside naija and see the petroleum ministers of other countries and observe their contributions.
The only way people like him can occupy positions is through the back door through coups.
Does he even have o levels or its equivalent, or else why has he not shown us.
What degree in oil and gas do you need to be oil minister?. Tam David West was a virologist, Dieziani Maduekwe studied architecture and I worked in the same company with her she was never involved in reserves or economics.
The best oil and gas minister in the world Sheikh Yamani never knew Jack about oil and gas.
There is an OPEC secretariat filled with economists and econometric experts to analyse the market. In any case, oil price does not fluctuate according to complex market forces.
Oil prices are the most manipulated thing in the world.

I have been observing OPEC since the 70s and the man I respect has been Tam David West, Nigeria had a very sophisticated NNPC and Ministry of petroleum resources that could reel out data about reserves and oil sales projections. Now with Jonathan's Presidency that organization is a mess. When Buhari was Petroleum Minster the level of discourse about the oil industry was sophisticated and it is VERY VERY important to actually do your research and check facts before making the assumption that your country is better now than before. Oil price and the politics around it was interesting discussion for 18year olds and 20 year olds not now when it seems mediocrity it the thing. Nigeria does not even know how much it is producing. Let Jonathan tell us if the current oil price crash was known by his government and now that it has happened what new sales strategy does he have, what is HIS government's approach to quotas, how low can Nigeria go...et.c

As a petroleum engineer, buhari's statement on stabilizing the oil market in 2015 is both ridiculous and naive to say the least.
1) the are many major oil producers in the world eg Canada (oil sands) , arctic region, Norway etc.
Furthermore, at the moment even countries with large reservoirs like Saudi Arabia and Iran can't pull off such a stunt let alone Nigeria that is the 7 th or 8 th largest producer.

Without being biased, this man is out if his depths whenever comes to managing a diverse economy like Nigeria. His ideas are not only outdated and primitive, but out rightly shameful to put it kindly.

I feel disappointed in apc's candidates, an oshiomole and fashola ticket would have blown away pdp to hell and back. Apc is not ready to win this election. Let's put ethnicity aside and use competent people.

I know their supportes will come after me, so I say bring it on.
Buhari is coming on board with Defence and security credentials and Anti corruption credentials.
Also Tested leadership skills which you don't buy in the market.
Good luck Jonathan also does not know anything about modern economics and is even more blank to the complexities of the modern society than Buhari. The problem is that a lot of people dont read wide and are victims of western propaganda.
Buhari was petroleum minister and a key member of OPEC sub committees.

We have been here before after the demise of Abacha, they brought in a near dead farmer from the darkest Gulag to be Head of State and people said he was not relevant to the modern way of doing things. In months the guy was all over the world, attract g investments and linking Nigeria to the international economic system, we had GSM soon after, we privatised gov't enterprises and increased oil reserves.

I have looked very well at Jonathan and quite frankly all I see is a lucky guy out of his depth with leadership, especially the hard decision making that you need to do for progress. I also see some latent inferiority complex, cowardice and out of proportion capacity for avarice and corruption. A child man who wants everything for nothing.

Also the President who was a village dwelling university graduate at the period over simplified what was going on at that time in his rally speech.I am not sure he was reading newspapers regularly in the backwater Yenagoa or Portharcourt suburb he was living then. To say that a "corrective military regime" imprisoned only political enemies was lying to young people at of ignorance. In any case Ojukwu was nobody's enemy in Nigeria at that period.

So could it that some others who we were told were arrested for corruption was not for corruption? So the fight wasn't against corruption but against enemies of the military government?

I repeat again, if Ojukwu who has been away from the Nigeria army for more than 15 years was arrest because he is high risk, why was the immediate past generals of the army not arrested? those who are actually more close to the ranks and files of the army then?

Finally, between Ojukwu and Shagari, who was more of a risk to Buhari government? When IBB came on board, he jailed the head of the government.. Abacha jailed people who he thought were plotting coup against him. The whole world know why they were jailed, so why did Buhari had to lie to the whole world that he was arrest corrupt politicians while he was actually arresting his enemies
The ratio could not have been less than 95% arrested for Corruption and just 5% arrested for Security Risk so what is the point you are making?. All corruption cases were tried by military tribunals and some special courts so don't give me clock and bull about all arrests being due to political enmity. The cases were well publicised, as I said the credibility of the illegal military governments in th eye of the public was always the corruption cases so thy made sure every Nigerian knew about it.
Are you afraid of the truth?. I just told you about a $25bn short term debt overhang on a country selling oil which was just $35 a barrel and a population that n of 90million or more. Which part of the truth are you afraid of, that people stole a lot of money or your President just lied to you again at a rally?

If you say that Ojukwu was arrested because of corruption, how possible is it when he was not a government official? why would ordinary party member be in prison while the president of the government under house arrest?

So please tell us the reason for Ojukwu arrest
I am telling you allegations of corruption were just a COVER. They were afraid of the guy. They did not do it (arrest him) because he was Ibo which is always what you guys like to hear. So many other people were arrested without trial not just Ojukwu, we are hearing Ojukwu' s case because of his prominence.
The common and most usual official line to the family when you are arrested without trial was always that they were investigating. The worst perpetrator of arrest without trial was IBB (Jonathan's Fada) and Abacha.

I don hear another one today!! So Buhari arrested Ojukwu not because of corruption but "High risk profile"... ok oh. The question then, between the president of the so called corrupt government and an ordinary citizen, as Ojukwu was as at then, who is more of a risk to Buhari government? I thought it was about corruption, now you have changed?

In other words, Buhari didn't arrest corrupt persons but people he think were his enemies?? Please stop defending Buhari on this, he made a mistake, accept the mistake and move on. He is not infallible.
Buhari arrested a lot of corrupt persons that Nigerians applauded him for. In fact we later realised that they dI'd the arrest to attract support. Please don't let the lies told by Jonathan to confuse you. Most arrests were due to corrupt acts and gave the military governments credibility. They were like the new Nzeogwus. The crating of Umaru Dikko was praised by Nigerian students. I am actually worried about Good luck using this example to disparage Buhwri. It suggests something was missing in Jonathan's upbringing. Psychologists say if you are not radical in your 20s and 30s you have a serious developmental problem.
Th problem with the under 40 generation is they are the most deradicalised generation in history that is why it hard for them to realise that there was a time young people went into the streets when accusations of corruption were made.

Now for Ojukwu I am sure it was risk profiling. If I were military dictator I would have done the same, if Ojukwu himself were military head of state in Nigeria he would have done the same and Ojukwu was military head of state of Biafra and he did the same. Please don't give us maudlin sentiment.

Aha, look at this one o.
What do you think military governments were? Do you think they were constitutionally backed governments. I don't believe I am hearing this question. Why do you think we prayed, fasted, died for democracy. Military governments are the mist illegal entities in the world. They suspend you constitution and rule by decree. Guess who made the decrees in this case?. Less than 40 officers, unelected, usually inexperienced military officers. They make laws and they formulate and execute government policies and they also appoint and influence court judgements. So legislature, executive and judiciary all controlled by 30 unelected people.

Now you are asking me whether it is for corruption they arrested Ojukwu. Was it for corruption they arrested Yaradua?, or Obasanjo?, or killed Abiola whose crime was winning elections?. The entire basis of your treatise is wrong. It is almost like wondering why snakes bite people or why dogs bark.

A military regime is very paranoid. When you shoot yourself into office you don't want to be a victim of the same so you lock up any potential threat. If that threat happens to be a former, well educated Oga from Ibo land who is too bright and has international connections then you better even quickly lock him up and for a longer time if possible.
Amongst the people who.would have voted at the SMC in favour of the lock up of Ojukwu would have been IBB, Domkat Bali, Ebitu Ukiwe, Maduekwe and so many others so please don't blame Buhari alone.

Interesting response. Thanks.

I already know that Buhari bundled a lot of politicians into jail. While it is easy to understand why he threw the active politicians in jail, it is difficult to understand WHY HE DEEMED IT FIT TO BUNDLE OJUKWU INTO JAIL TOO. After all, Ojukwu did not participate in Shagari's government.

Are you implying that by marrying Bianca Onoh, he demonstrated corruption and deserved to be jailed? Was his crime being pardoned by SHAGARI for political popularity?

Please, explain further. Your explanation is vague.
I have just explained above.
The RISK PROFILE of Ojukwu was higher than others. He was a former military man, leader of a secessionist region who went into partisan politics. If you allowed him free, what if he linked up with Umaru Dikko (who was the main enemy in the mind of the gov t) they threatened the new government?. To you as civilians it is wickedness, to Ojukwu himself who would have done the same if the shoes were reversed it was expected security issue by a new government trying to prevent a counter coup. My major problem is always why Ibos don't have capacity to understand other people at all and are always operating under a kind of persecution mania. Abacha threw Yardaua and Obj into the worst prisons, injected one with poison and almost got the other with the same treatment and we all shrug it off now because rightly or wrongly Abacha was doing it for his own self survival.

In case you did not understand the question, can i write it in a capital letter? WHAT WAS OJUKWU SIN THAT WARRANTED GMB TO THROWN HIM INTO JAIL FOR TEN (10) GOOD MONTHS MAN.
Ojukwu wasn't part of the Government like you said, nor was there any investigation or evidence that proved he was corrupt before he was bundled and thrown into jail for ten (10) good months. Nearly a year without a crime.

Like i have said and will continue saying, the only igbos that supports GMB presidential campaign are either for selfish interest or party affiliation. No right thinking igbo person will chose blood thirty jihadist like GMB over a clueless GEJ.
You have to direct your question to Buhari then. So many other politicians were put in prison for a long time, I don't know why Ojukwu is the only one you are concerned about. What do you want Umaru Dikko' s people to say?. The man was drugged and unconscious in a crate, a pipe had been forced into his lungs and he was almost loaded as cargo into an aircraft. I guess I was put off by the irrelevant parochiality of your question.

The only thing I personally can accuse Ojukwu of was thuggery in Aba, Oweri and Onitsha on a massive scale on behalf of the NPN. Maybe that was why they unprovoked him up for 10 months.
Also maybe as a former Separatist leader, his RISK PROFILE was higher for a new military government than others.
I still think a lot of politicians of the era deserve to still be in prison till today including the luckiest of them all Mr 12 2/3 Akinjide who is an adviser to GEJ and whose daughter is flying high in government now.

Infrastructure is a right and not a benevolent patronage dispensed by a person. Roads and infrastructure should be built as a normal thing in government. All infrastructural projects should proceed as part of 10, 20 even 30 year development plans and no government should be able to stop them. In advanced countries, a president comes in meets a tunnel being constructed as part of a 10 year project, serves as prime minister or president, loses election, wins again and the road is still being constructed. All developments proceeding independent of the leadership.

Presidents should only get kudos for extra ordinary things like in the US, the moon landing, space shuttle or something innovative or never done before. The only one I can give to Goodlusck is in agriculture and even that should go to the ni'm sister of agriculture. Please get your brain out of the Nigeria gutter and get emancipated.

barcanista:
Was Ojukwu the only one that was jailed and freed unconditionally? Ciroma was jailed, Jakande was jailed (and released) but both men respect Buhari. Infact, Jakande campaigned for Buhari in 2011... Ojukwu was also close to Buhari and was even accused by some people that he was working alongside Buhari to return Buhari as President in 2003.
The problem with Nairalamd is there are too many half educated and unexposed young people, semi illiterates actually who have lost the power to research anything or think due to an inadequate educational system. A lot of them start ignorance exposing threads and spew trash unnecessarily.

First of all, Ojukwu was not of concern to the Buhari Idiagbon regime at all. The biggest enemy they had was Umaru Dikko, the NPN strong man who had stolen money and was threatening to start a gov't in exile, there was later an even bigger enemy within the administration itself which we now know was Babangida.. Ojukwu himself had been out of the country in exile for years and was only invited back by the NPN gov't to boost their chances in the East against Zik. At the time Ojukwu came back to Nigeria, he was practically friends with everybody except funny enough, the Lagos State government that was sitting on his dad's numerous properties in Lagos. Ojukwu was a spectacle to behold and he attended Miss Nigeria contest as guest, fell in love with the winner, CC Onoh's daughter who became his wife. That was the Ojukwu we knew, a glamorous celebrity.

When Buhari came in all politicians had messed up big big time and were very unpopular. The jailing of all politicians included Ekwueme Ojukwu, Pa Ajasin and Okadigbo who used to insult Zik in public. Akinloye and Akinjide ran to the UK.
Most active senior politicians were in prison except Zik, Awo and Shagari who was put on house arrest.
The Buhari regime came in as heroes to rescue the country and most newspaper articles were favourable. Umaru Dikko who was later put in a crate was like the Shekau now, a public enemy No.1
Please cure your delusion. The Buhari regime was not about Ojukwu and Ojukwu was not the main issue of the day.
It was just an Hausa-Fulani civilian government being overthrown by Hausa-Fulani military officers. Pure and simple.
