Car Talk / Re: Siena's MK5 Toyota Hilux Customisation Project - "Apple Candy". by Afolabs101: 10:04am On Jan 03, 2014
sultaan:

Why not just get a Tundra

@Siena when you say Lexus V8 are you talking about the 4.3l, 4.7l, or new 4.6l?

I prefer the shape of the hilux as it's not as big as the tundra. I've seen pics of hilux's in Dubai tuned up and they look crazy. Plus it would be an interesting project I think.

I think the Lexus engine should be the 4.3l V8 from a GS430. In sure it would be a lot more expensive getting one of the new 4.6's.

Another alternative would be the old 4.7

Hi siena,

Very interesting project, I love the helix and am about to get one for everyday use. My only problem is that slow arse 2.7l engine.

I'm based in Lagos, do u think I could do an engine conversion here to upgrade an '08/09 hilux to a V8?

Also, what else would need to be changed in order for the vehicle to handle the increase in power? New twin exhaust system for the V8, new wheels n tyres for better handling maybe, plus any changes to the drivetrain, new gearbox etc??

I'd be very interested in carrying out this project but as I'm only a car enthusiast and not a mechanic, I'd need competent people to do the job.

Your thoughts please...

Please let's not be ignorant!

A respected international body has given us a warning so let's heed it rather than questioning it.

Inhaliation of firewood smoke is bad for your health. It's a fact.

Using gas to cook is cleaner, safer to the environment and safer to us!

Companies like Masters Energy, TSL, Oando and others are building or have built LPG (cooking gas) plants. If more can do the same, cooking gas will be readily available to the masses.

Kerosene is imported, expensive and scarce. LPG (cooking gas) is extracted from our soil and processed for our use
Politics / Re: Understanding The Oil Theft Business In Nigeria (All About Stolen Crude) by Afolabs101: 8:31pm On Dec 04, 2013
@OP you've basically said that it is impossible to stop the crime of oil theft, that there is crime all over the world and not Nigeria and therefore it's not the President's fault.

1- There is no where in the world where close to 20-30% of the country's main asset is being stolen.

2- Name any other country where crude oil theft is an issue.

3- Name any oil producing nation that does not meter the amount of oil that comes out of the ground.

4- Name one oil producing nation that uses confessed criminals to guard its coastline and oil installations. In merge US as you mentioned, can you get a job as a coast guard??

5- You mentioned that Alams is a major stolen crude king pin, but the same President just pardoned him. Has he stopped stealing oil??

6- Why is it now that we have an Ijaw president, oil theft is at its highest levels ever??

OIL THEFT CONTINUES BECAUSE POWERFUL PEOPLE BENEFIT FROM IT. THESE PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO INFLUENCE GOVERNMENT. THIS IS WHY OIL THEFT CONTINUES

Webmasters / Re: Most Embarrassing Moment In Front Of A Potential Client! by Afolabs101: 2:36pm On Dec 03, 2013
This was a couple of years ago:

I worked for a federal institution and we had gone to see an important client who was good friends with our then supervising minister. Me, my colleague, one fine young babe and our boss.

My boss sat opposite the client at his desk while me and my colleague sat on the sofa close to them.

Half way through the meeting the worst smell you can imagine caught my nose. Then it became worse and it now felt like all the air around me had been completely polluted. After a few seconds I realized it was a fart, the most deadly fart you can imagine.

I look over at my colleague who is completely motionless but It must have been her as she was sitting closest to me. At this point I was just praying that the smell will not reach the clients table until he stopped talking abruptly and started coughing. The smell had got to him.

Neither my boss or the client said anything but you could tell that they had experienced the same thing as me!

I confronted my colleague afterwards but she blamed it on the beans she had for breakfast grin

Politics / Re: Zamfara Govt Buys 1000 Brand New Cars For APC Party Members For 2nd Year Anniver by Afolabs101: 12:15pm On Nov 26, 2013
@topic, this is the usual phenomenon among our Government, they get to office and see the treasury as their private bank account. It reminds me of countries like Saudi Arabia or Jordan where the Central Bank acts as the personal bank of the Royal Families. Let them investigate and prosecute. I feel sorry for the car dealers though, many of them may go out of business because of this embarassed

It's funny how people post stories about corruption and then there's jubilation??

@taharqa, you call the "apc guys/Eko" hypocrites but you and your friends are exactly the same. A pro-GEJ politician is accused of something and you're on the defensive. Both sides of this e-war could use exactly the same statements when it comes to accusing the other side or defending one of their own. The funny thing is, both sides are guilty of the same thing. The mind frame of the political class is the same, irrespective of the party or tribe they belong to.

The one that annoys me is when they won't allow other road users to pass their convoy.

I was driving on 3rd mainland one Saturday morning, road was free but a convoy of about six cars or so were on the bridge. You should have seen how the last pick up in the convoy was swerving from one side of the expressway to the other to stop cars from overtaking them. This is a 4 lane highway!!!

Car Talk / Re: Users Of Tinted Glass Risk N50,000 Fine, 6-Month Jail Term —Senate by Afolabs101: 11:21am On Nov 22, 2013
[b]The law is and always has been, the use of factory fitted tinted windows is allowed with a permit

Officially, the idea of the permit is to keep a record of people using tinted windows, so that if you use your tinted window to engage in criminal acts, it should be easier to trace you.

Unofficially, this is the Senate's endorsement or legal backing for what is essentially revenue generator for the NPF.

My advice to you:

1- If your tinted windows are NOT factory fitted, whether you have a licence or not, you are breaking the law! Permits are given for "factory fitted tinted windows" and NOT. Drive with non-factory fitted tints at your own peril. Because even now, a police or FRSC officer can impound your vehicle and prosecute you.

2- If you drive a jeep with factory fitted tinted windows at the rear, go to the nearest NPF Force Headquarters Annexe (in Lagos go to Kam Salem House at Obalende) and get a permit for factory fitted tinted windows. The police say its free but it should cost between N15-20k. If you get a permit from the Local Government or other police stations and you are stopped while driving, it is likely they will hold you. I'm having a hard time deciding on construction business, Web related (profit will be mainly from advetising like nairaland) or Car wash and laundry that is really viable

Go where you have the best network/contacts. If your cousin is Local Govt Chairman, go into construction as you can be assured to get some contracts. If say your Uncle owns a hotel, set up the laundry and be washing staff uniforms or he can even outsource all their laundry issues. For car wash, location is most important as well as price.

They're obviously doing Christian prayers as you can tell from GEJ, PJ, Amechi and Dickson. So the VP being a Muslim must is just sitting down respectfully. If you know Sambo, you know that even if he had a major grudge against GEJ, there's no way he would openly disrespect him like that.

naptu2: Finally, someone has touched on one of the misconceptions. Human sacrifice. Is there really human sacrifice? This question was answered by the palace in 2003 during Oba Akiolu's coronation (I wonder if anybody can find it). If you believe that there is human sacrifice, then I'll have to ask you if you also believe that Egungun is a spirit that came from heaven and if the "Oro sound" is actually made by a dog.

The second misconception has to do with people who are outside on an emergency (health issues, etc). I wonder who will raise that issue.

The discussion has been very interesting so far, apart from the occasional bigoted post.

So is there human a sacrifice or not? But actually, how would anyone who is not part of the Oro know? It's not like they'd divulge that information to outsiders.
Culture / Re: Oniru Estate In Victoria-Island Under-Curfew For Oro Festival by Afolabs101: 10:10pm On Nov 01, 2013
@shymexx, you said they're not bothering anyone but they've given us orders. Now if we break those orders let's say by putting on our gen or switching on a light, what happens?

The Oniru Royal Security haven't told us of the consequences, but we've been told through family members who live amongst us and by friends, acquaintances, colleagues etc. We're told you may face death (not sure whether through physical or spiritual means) sad So that's why some of us feel our rights are being infringed on.

But something I'd like to know is if the Muslim religion and the Traditional religion can both be practiced simultaneously. I ask this because all through the estate they vigorously celebrated the Sallah with plenty ram slaughtering, now a couple of weeks later it's Oro Festival undecided
Culture / Re: Oniru Estate In Victoria-Island Under-Curfew For Oro Festival by Afolabs101: 3:22pm On Nov 01, 2013
Mynd_44:
You are missing the point here sir, no one is making it compulsory you stay at home na. The Oba does not have the legal rights to enforce a curfew as that will be a violation of your rights.

They are just telling you that if you believe in the spiritual and that you can be hexed, stay away from certain areas for a week. It is more like an advice.

You can decide to take the advice or you can decide to go anywhere you like which you have the right to. The warning if for your own good but they cannot force you so please do as you wish

Your points are valid but there is the threat of violence/death for anyone who flouts the curfew. While I concede that this threat is not clearly spelt out in the notice it has been made known to us by the Oniru family members living among us.

It would be nice if I was brave enough (both spiritually and physically) to flout the rule, but I'm only a small boy so I have to obey. But at least I can come here and vent my annoyance angry

@ify - My landlord owns my property and is an Oniru family member, there is no where in my rental contract that states they will observe Oro festival. Other residents have expressed the same. Last year around this time they did not restrict movement. The point is they have never restricted movement in Oniru because of Oro festival, which is why there was nothing to warn people about in the past.

@Mynd-44 - I wish I had a Benz AMG, a G63 or the new S65 V12 would be nice cheesy But firstly, not everyone who lives in Oniru lives in multi-million naira houses/flats. There are parts of Oniru where you find low cost properties, so while you're imagining some spoiled "big boy" complaining that he can't go popping champagne in the clubs for a week, you're completely missing the point. This is about our basic rights being infringed upon. We live in a democracy where we elected a government. We are no longer ruled by a monarchy. Again, another important note is that these people are almost forcing their religious beliefs on others. Has any Orthodox Church, Pentecostal or any Mosque ordered people to be under house arrest because they are doing special prayers Why can't they do their rituals and prayers in the Oba's Palace

proO1:

Well, if that is the case, then no problem, since it takes lawful effect as an enforceable agreement. If the residents willfully agree to such an arrangement prior to taking up residency, then they are obliged to respect the agreement. I was concerned with the legality of such a 'curfew' that is apparently not backed by law.

Ify is mistaken, the residents did not agree to this as they were never asked or warned. There is no enforceable agreement!

No one informed anyone before they paid because this no movement thing started this year. In previous years they would just go about their rituals, prayers etc without bothering anyone. It seems they now want to start taking it seriously.

But as a Christian, I will be far away for the duration of that week. I can't be sleeping at night and right outside my window they're offering sacrifices to the "gods" shocked

ifyalways: Any body renting an accomodation in the Island,I'm sure the agents would inform him or her before hand if they observe Oro within the vicinity. Ikate,Ajiran and some places observe theirs every ten days.

You cannot come to someone's house and ask him to stop his culture or religious inclinations. If it doesnt suit you, simply don't go there or park out. smiley

Residents/landlords were not told about this before a week ago. I believe this is even the first time they have restricted movement because of Oro (correct me if I'm wrong). But no one is going to their house to tell them not to celebrate but then they are coming to us and forcing us to stay indoors, windows locked, curtains closed, no lights, no gens etc for a week.

I just don't agree with the fact that you are restricting movement, when we have a constitution and laws. The Oniru family sold most of the land in the estate, these lands are owned (through lease hold of 99 years) by individuals and rented by individuals. So on what authority is the family restricting movement??
