There's nothing wrong. The industry is just maturing and I commend the DISCOS for flying an independent kite. Hopefully they will move to the next stage of diversifying their power purchase from Transysco and open up the whole market to whoever can supply them power and a favourable price to them which includes the general public.

Rejection means one or two things. Either the economics isn't right or the technical package isn't. Why will I buy power if I cannot make money selling it. Is that not a debt which will sooner or later destroy the whole industry. We all know that three of the biggest challenges faced today are: low electricity prices, poor transmission and distribution infrastructure and electricty theft and until these can be adequately addressed and surmounted, DISCOS will have no alternative than to buy only what they can sell and when they can sell to make a profit. This is purely business and if government as a whole operated like this, we will not be in the mess we face today.
It is good for them to assert their independence, but you must acknowledge that Discos also inflate their estimation. If we go through the option that the economics is not right, then they are being fraudulent with their approach to estimation despite turning down supply.

But that is the nature of the business. They are already aware of this before putting their hands, if there are shortfalls in their revenue, they can approach the banks and then become a little more aggressive in their approach to get their money.

They themselves insisted that Maximum demand users should operate only on post paid basis. And this is where the bulk of their revenue comes from.

As of now, the Minister of Power is a more or less a ceremonial post because there's really nothing the power minister can do to the gencos and discos since they are private entities.
Is any consumer rejecting the power?? They will definitely get their money back I presume.

But Fashola is the regulator. You cant just excuse him that he is a sitting duck.

I just dont understand. Some people are alleging that it is because they will still make their money from estimated bills. And they in turn will not pay for the rejected power.

The power problem in this country is multifaceted. It needs iron hand. Fashola seems inundated and too soft with these discos.

Mynd44, OAM4J, Lalasticlala please come and see this interesting report. Discos are turning down power supply despite that people are eagerly and prayerfully waiting to receive such electricity.

Something is definitely wrong somewhere with the power administration and management in this country.

Eight power firms reject 1,337MWH despite poor supply

Eight power distribution companies rejected 1,336.75 megawatts-hour of electricity, representing 19 per cent of the total quantum of power supplied to them by the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

Industry data obtained by our correspondent in Abuja on Tuesday showed that Kaduna, Eko, Jos, Yola, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Ibadan and Benin Discos rejected the 1,336.75MWH of power in the third quarter of this year, despite the instability in the supply of electricity across the country.

Specifically, in the month of July, a total of 318.83MWH, which was three per cent of the total energy delivered to the Discos, was rejected by four of the firms.

In July, the Kaduna Disco’s rejection of 132.99MWH made it the highest in the month. The Eko Disco rejected 67.46MWH; Jos, 63.05MWH; while the Yola Disco rejected 55.33MWH.

In the same month, the Port Harcourt Disco took in the highest quantum of power at 441.43MWH; Kano accepted 397MWH; while the Enugu Disco collected 302.49MWH.

In August, there was an increase in load rejection by the distribution companies to the tune of 541.56MWH, which was four per cent of the total energy delivered to them as against the 318.83MWH delivered in the previous month.

The Port Harcourt Disco rejected the most quantum of power with a total of 239.88MWH, followed by the Eko Disco with 134.8MWH.

In the month under review, five Discos took excess load beyond their Multi-Year Tariff Order allocation to the tune of 187.21MWH. The Abuja Disco took the most, with 132.81MWH; followed by the Kaduna Disco, with 23.21MWH; Ibadan, 16.24MWH; and Enugu, 12.42MWH.

Further analysis showed that September saw the rejection of 476.36MW, representing 12 per cent of the total energy delivered to the Discos. It was, therefore, the highest load rejection in the quarter.

The Abuja Disco rejected 94.72MWH, followed closely by Port Harcourt, with 92.35MWH; Ibadan was next with 67.14MWH; and the Benin Disco turned down 46.40MWH.

Among all the Discos, only Kaduna accepted power beyond its MYTO allocation, taking in 65.96MWH in excess of its MYTO allocation.

Earlier this year, the Managing Director, TCN, Abubarkar Atiku, told journalists in Abuja that consumers were not able to benefit optimally from the supply of electricity because the distribution companies were rejecting the loads allocated to them to avoid paying for the power.

Atiku had said, “On the issue of rejecting load, I will say yes; it is still happening. I don’t want to mention the distribution companies that are guilty, but they know themselves. Most of them are load-shedding 11 feeders to two-three hours.

“This is simply because they cannot pay to the market operator or to the system the invoice that is given to them that they consume. So, they use that technique or method to deny customers power.”

However, the Association of Nigeria Electricity Distributors, an umbrella body for the Discos, said, “In view of the dire need for generation, as well as the generation thresholds in the Discos’ tariffs, which constitute the basis of their revenue recovery, it is inconceivable to think that any Disco would load-shed as described, thereby diminishing its revenue prospects and alienating its customers.”

Celebrity soldiers. Nice one, I just hope they become more reasonable in their dealings with civilians.

BTW

Congrats to the Nigerian army and their Commander in Chief. I wonder why FFK is pained at this victory. Your principal was given the opportunity but he made a mess of it. He prioritised his reelection than securing the country and FFK is still claiming sabotage.

All the security funds diverted to PDP campaign is also sabotage I assume. The 800million awarded to FFK, from which he bought a Range for himself and his Babe; from FFK's submission himself and others that partook in the sharing of campaign funds were also part of the saboteurs. In saner climes during war time, saboteurs are shot.

PoliticsI Won’t Run For President In 2019 – Jonathan by agabusta(op): 12:45pm On Dec 23, 2016
I won’t run for president in 2019 – Jonathan

Former president, Goodluck Jonathan, has denied reports that he would contest the 2019 presidential election.
There were reports that Mr. Jonathan who left office last year following his defeat by President Muhammadu Buhari in the March 28, 2015 presidential election, was under pressure to return to power.

Vanguard newspaper quoted Ikechukwu Eze, media aide to Mr. Jonathan as saying in a statement that his principal had no plan to contest the 2019 presidential poll.

Mr. Eze said the former president did not at anytime declare an intention to contest, describing it as mere “fabrication.”
The statement said “Our attention has just been drawn to a fabricated online publication alleging that the former President Goodluck Jonathan made comments on the 2019 elections, while hosting his kinsmen in Otuoke last Tuesday.

“Those reports are false and bear no truth whatsoever. The former President was not in Otuoke on Tuesday, neither did he make the comments attributed to him. In fact, he has only just returned to his community to spend Christmas having been away for two weeks, so he could not have been hosting anyone there last Tuesday.

“Of what good is it to our national development efforts if some people spend so much energy spreading falsehood about fellow citizens and our nation?

The statement also said the former president wished “his fellow compatriots a merry Christmas and prosperous New Year in advance, and advises all to always channel their efforts towards working to attain the nation of our collective dreams.”

Mr. Jonathan, who was a candidate of the People Democratic Party lost to Mr. Buhari, the flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress.
Mr. Buhari won 15.4 million votes against Mr. Jonathan’s 13.3 million.

The former president had called Mr. Buhari to concede defeat ending the 16 years of the PDP rule.

Good.

It was a fair election, not marred by anything. The PDP had no grounds to contest this one.

It was a win win situation for APC.
In addition, as stated by Akeredolu, those guys as senior lawyers have actually seen that there is no loophole they can validly anchor their case on to warrant cancellation of the election and have decided to save their time and money. This is even more so in view of the rulings of the supreme court over recent elections, as they have refused to cancel 'ANY' election and order a rerun.

In other places, desperate lawyers will convince them to challenge the results just to milk them. I wonder why Sylva was challenging the victory of Dickson. It doesn't make sense and was just a waste of time and money. In essence, it was a distraction, just like many other election petition.

Ondo result: Akeredolu lauds Jegede, Oke

The Ondo State Governor-elect, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), has commended his opponents at the last governorship election in the state for accepting the result of the election in good faith.

The time allowed by law to file petitions at the Election Petitions Tribunal to challenge the poll result lapsed on Sunday, December 18, 2016, which was 21 days after the announcement of the results of the poll.

No contestant had filed a petition against the winner of the poll as of Sunday.

Akeredolu was declared the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission after defeating 26 candidates of other political parties in the November 26 poll.

The governor-elect, who spoke with our correspondent on Tuesday at his hometown in Owo, Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, believed that the election was free and fair.

He commended the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the election, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), and his counterpart in the Alliance for Democracy, Chief Olusola Oke, for displaying good sportsmanship by not challenging the result of the election at the tribunal.

He said, “I have to praise my other contestants, especially, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede and Mr. Olusola Oke. I am sure that they have seen, as senior lawyers, that we are in a position to accept the result of an election.

“Having assess all the parameters, we believe the election was free and fair and I want to believe that their attitude is worthy of note and all of us, at least, should try to emulate that in subsequent elections.”

According to him, with no case at the tribunal, he would be able to concentrate on governance after the swearing-in.

He hailed INEC and the security agencies for the smooth conduct of the election, adding that the electoral commission was moving towards conducting acceptable elections in the country.

Breaking: Saraki swears in Rivers Senators as Senate adjourns till January

Senate President Bukola Saraki has administered oath of office on Magnus Abe, George Sekibo and Osinakachukwu Ideozu, newly elected senators from Rivers State.

The three lawmakers were elected in the Rivers legislative re-run elections that held on Saturday.
The exercise – still ongoing as results are yet to be known for nine constituencies – was characterized by widespread violence and irregularities.

Mr. Abe represents Rivers South East; Mr. Sekibo; Rivers East; and Mr. Ideozu, Rivers West.
The seats for the three senatorial districts from Rivers State had been vacant since December when the Court Appeal invalidated legislative elections held during the 2015 general elections in the oil rich state.

“They just came from a tough election,” Mr. Saraki said after congratulating the newly sworn in Senators.
Mr. Sekibo (PDP) is in the Senate for the third time, Mr. Abe (APC) the second time and Mr. Ideozu (PDP) is a first time senator.
Meanwhile, the Senate has adjourned sitting till January 10.

The resolution for adjournment was reached after the Senate reconvened Thursday afternoon to approve votes and proceedings of the day.
