The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, has sought the collaboration of Ogun State House Assembly in the implementation of the Sports Commission Act which was passed by the Assembly in 2019 for the overall development sports in the state.

The State House of Assembly, had in December, passed the State Sports Commission bill, 2019 and State Sports Trust Fund Bill, as part of moves to further boost sporting activities and youth development in the State.

SWAN Chairman, Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji made the call when he led other members of the executive on a courtesy call to the Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, at the Assembly complex, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta.

Comrade Ogunsiji who noted that the implementation of the bill was needed to promote sports at the grassroots level, commended the Speaker for his efforts in the development of sports in the grassroot, stating that SWAN was committed to partnering the Assembly in replicating the same at the State level.

Responding, the Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide described sports as a major instrument for creating job opportunities and engaging the youth in an efforts to reduce restiveness in the society.

Hon. Elemide who acknowledged the enormous contributions of Sports to the socio economic development of any society if properly harnessed, appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to take action on the implementation of the Sports Commission bill.

The Speaker explained that State Government had initiated an executive bill for the creation of the Sports Commission and that of the Sports Development Trust Funds.

"The bill was an executive bill. I was part of it. I was part of the passage. And we did our own beat. We have passed it. So we only implore our governor to speed up action on it. There must be a reason why the implementation has not started".

He assured SWAN of government's commitment to sports development, saying that the Prince Dapo Abiodun led administration would not relent in giving the best to the teeming youths in the State.

The Ogun State government has pledged its full commitment to supporting and collaborating with strategic stakeholders for the purpose of training, mentoring and provision of funding support for young entrepreneurs in the State.

Governor Dapo Abiodun made the pledge in Abeokuta when he launched the Orange Corners Nigeria Hub in company of the Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nigeria, Michel Deelen, noting that the hub project aligned perfectly with the strategic priorities and economic agenda of the State.

Represented by the Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adebola Sofela, Abiodun said the initiative had the capacity to ignite the entrepreneurial spirit of youths while propelling the State towards greater socio-economic development.

He expressed the willingness of the present administration to partnering the Hub on access to market for SMEs, policy advocacy and support, infrastructure development, capacity building and mentorship.

“With the launch of this innovative hub in Ogun State, we are poised to witness a new wave of entrepreneurial excellence that will significantly contribute to the growth and prosperity of our State.

" The training, mentorship, and funding provided will equip our young entrepreneurs with the skills and resources needed to thrive in a competitive global market.

“This initiative will create jobs and stimulate economic activities, while it significantly contributes to the reduction of poverty and unemployment in Ogun State, enhance social security and reduce youth unrest,” Abiodun said.

He noted that his administration has been unflinching on promoting entrepreneurship, pointing out that different initiatives such as the Ogun Tech Hub, Ogun State Enterprise Development Agency (OGS-EDA), Ogun SME Financial Empowerment Scheme, the 1,000-hectare Small and Medium Enterprises Industrial Land Acquisition Scheme (SILAS), among others have been introduced to promote entrepreneurship, improve infrastructure and enhance the overall business climate in the State while the N200 billion FGN- presidential intervention Funds window have also been leveraged to boost SMEs


The State's helmsman said his government has taken Ogun State beyond our natural competitiveness of being the recipient of overflow of investments from Lagos, but his government has been more deliberate and intentional in improving the Ease of Doing Business and attraction of investments through implementation of business-friendly reforms, provision of critical infrastructure as well as critical investment in the security of lives and property.

In his address, Consul General, Kingdom of the Netherlands in Lagos, Nigeria, Michel Deelen said the Netherlands is partnering the FATE Foundation to help empower entrepreneurs with the necessary training, mentorship and funding which would help their businesses grow.

Speaking earlier, the Executive Director, FATE Foundation, Mrs. Adenike Adeyemi who disclosed that the Foundation has so far supported 1,000 entrepreneurs in the State, said the launch was aimed at widening the horizon of the hub and enable the project impact more entrepreneurs, stating that 20 entrepreneurs who have been selected to pioneer the project in the State would benefit from a comprehensive six-month incubation and empowerment program and take-off financial grants to help set up their businesses.

The Ogun State Football Association, will on Friday, July 19, 2024 inaugurate a committee to oversee youth football affairs in the Gateway state.

The development is in compliance with the directive of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), which has mandated all state Football Associations, to give priority attention to youth development.

Executive Board Member of the NFF, and Chairman Ogun State Football Association, Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi is the Chairman of the committee, while coach Femi Bamgboye will serve as Vice Chairman.

Dr. Bayo Oluwatoki, Coach Victor Agbagu, Mr. Omotunde Adamson and Mr. Oseni Oluwasegun are members of the committee.

Other members are Prince Adeniyi Adeyinka, Alhaji Hammed Adebayo, Dauda Ibrahim, Mr. Michael Onikute, Mrs. Agbabiaka Sekinat, Engr. Ayodeji Sodrudeen, Ibrahim Nasiru, and Mrs. Olanike Titilayo Lawal.

Mr. Adeleke John will serve as the committee's secretary, while Mr. Ogunsiji Michael is the Media Officer.

The grand finale of the 2024 Nestle for Healthier Kids Quiz competition has been held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with a renewed call on Nigerians to pay greater attention to nutrition and promoting hygienic practices for healthy lifestyle.

The climax of events took place at the Methodist Primary School, Ago Oko, Abeokuta among pupils drawn from schools across the 3 senatorial districts of the state, where Oke Ona United Primary School, Elega, Abeokuta clinched the first prize, as winners.

St Peter's School, Siun in Obafemi Owode Local government area of the state came second while China Nigeria Friendship School, Igbesa in Ado - Odo/Ota council area emerged as the third best school in the Nestle for Healthier Kids Quiz competition.

Speaking on the gains of the contest, the lead, Corporate Communications, and Public Affairs Manager, Nestle Nigeria, Mrs Victoria Uwadoka said the process had helped in grooming children to embrace basic hygienic practices and the culture of proper waste management.

Mrs Uwadoka who announced plans to expand the competition to inter - state level in the country, explained that the school - based nutrition education programme was aimed at empowering young minds with the required knowledge to make better nutrition choices from the early age, with a view to ensuring a healthier future.

Addressing the participants, The Executive Chairman, Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr Femi Majekodunmi described the partnership with Nestle Nigeria as part of the state government's unrelenting efforts to strengthen education for the benefit of the people.

Dr Majekodunmi encouraged the learners to always strive for excellence
and solicited the collaboration of corporate organisations towards complementing the government's determination to add more value to the people's social and economic standard, through education.

The Ogun State Government has vowed to do a thorough investigation to ascertain the root cause of the Saturday night inferno which gutted some parts of Oba Lipede International Market,located at Kuto, Abeokuta to mitigate future recurrence.

It also promised that experts would be deployed to determine the impact of the fire and conduct integrity test on the building despite that only some parts of the market was affected by the inferno .

The Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adebola Sofela made this known during an on-the-spot assessment of the marke on Sunday.

About four shops and stalls were reported to have been gutted by fire around 10.00pm on Saturday but the Ogun State Fire Service men swiftly moved in to rescue the situation.

Sofela after his physical assessment said that if remediation is limited to the areas impacted by the fire, the government will not delay to come to site.

The Commissioner who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary Dr. Olu. Ola. Aikulola, Directors in the Ministry and Market Development Board as well as Iyaloja of the Market, Mrs. Tejumade Bakre, among other top market leaders, noted that the main building of the market which was constructed over 43 years was a testament to the commitment of the present administration to maintaining its social investment assets.

Describing Prince Dapo Abiodun as a compassionate Governor who feels the pains of the citizenry, Sofela pointed that the State's helmsman would come up with plans to ameliorate the pains of traders eho suffered one loss or the other to the inferno.

According to him, we will take proper look at the totality of the environment based on professional advice.

"Don't forget that this market is about 43 years old and we have been trying to keep it in shape by the benevolence of the Governor who is committed to maintaining the social investment assets of the State.

"The swift response of our fire service men on Saturday night is the type you get from our government in situations where lives and properties are threatened.

"In this case, investigations on the root cause of the inferno will come in earnest to mitigate future recurrence. Our experts would do a thorough test on the integrity of the building and we will follow professional advice on our next steps . Sofela stated.

..... Expresses satisfaction with facilities in place

The Federal Government has expressed satisfaction with the level of preparation put in place by Ogun State ahead of the National Sports Festival especially in areas of infrastructural development, security and accommodation.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Sports Development, Mrs. Tinuke Watti, stated this while speaking with journalists after inspecting proposed facilities and venues for the festival tagged "Gateway Games"

Mrs Patti who is also the Chairman, Main organizing Committee, MOC, submitted that with the level of preparation and assurances made, the State had demonstrated it's readiness to host the nation early next year.

She appreciated the Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun for making frantic efforts towards making the hosting a success, saying the Governor had showed great commitment with the level of infrastructural development witnessed around the stadia.

Also, The Chairman Local Organising Committee, LOC,, Mr. Bukola Olopade noted that the NSF would make the State the first to give athletes an amazing digitalized hostel facility, as well as a digitalized feeding system which would help in the quest for accountability and data collection for both the Federal and State governments in the final analysis.

In a remark, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Mr Wasiu Isiaka reaffirmed the readiness of the state to host the over 12 thousand athletes coming for the games.

Mr Isiaka pointed out that the choice of Babcock University for the accommodation center of over 12, 000 athletes was part of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s resolve to provide a befitting hostel accommodation, describing athletes welfare as paramount to the State Government.

The areas inspected included, MKO International Stadium Kuto Abeokuta, Sagamu Stadium, Remo Stars stadium in Ikenne, Abeokuta Sports Club and Babcock University, Ilisan.

Ogun State Government has rewarded members of Team Ogun in the last All African Games held in Accra, Ghana.

About 11 athletes from Ogun state were among the contingents that represented Nigeria at the 13th All African Games in February this year in Ghana.

The Team Ogun athletes won a total number of 11 medals including 5 Gold and 6 Bronze for the country in Scrabble, Badminton, Athletics, and Handball.

Notable among the athletes are the current World record holder in 100 metres hurdle, Tobi Amusan, former African number in Badminton, and Dorcas Adesokan.

Tobi Amusan who was represented by her mother, Mrs Amusan, and others like Adebisi Adekanbi, Joy Ola, Onyebuchi Chisom, and Shagari John were among the athletes who benefited from the cash flow.

Receiving the athletes at the Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja, Abeokuta at a well attended reception, the Ogun State Commissioner for Sports Development, Mr Wasiu Isiaka explained the reception was to celebrate the incredible achievements of the talented athletes and to express the state government’s gratitude to them for making Ogun State proud on both National and the International stages.

Mr Isiaka noted that, the reward would not only boost their morale but would also inspire others to put in their best.

The Sports Commissioner explained the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun had approved the sum of 500 hundred thousand naira each for all gold medalists and 250 thousand naira each for all bronze holders, while the coaches and to athletes from Ogun who made the Team Nigeria contingent to the All African Games received the sum of 150 thousand respectively.

Also, another 42 athletes who represented the State at both National and zonal sporting events were rewarded by the State government.

Governor Abiodun explained that the ministry had in last six months participated in 10 games, and have won 36 Gold, 7 Silver, and 8 bronze medals.

The Ogun State Government has issued a note of warning to illegal miners and dredgers operating within its domain, threatening necessary legal actions/ stiff sanctions against any law breaker.

This warning was given by the Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adebola Sofela, at a stakeholders meeting with miners and dredgers held at the Ministry's Conference Room, in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Describing mining and dredging as an important sector across the globe considering its revenue and employment generation potentials, Sofela who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Olu. Ola. Aikulola, affirmed that the need for responsible mining and dredging cannot be over-emphasised.

The Commissioner lamented the negative impacts of irresponsible mining and dredging on the community and State infrastructure, which he said can both be destructive and disruptive.

Sofela who also noted that some miners and dredgers had been operating with expired documents, called for immediate screening of the papers for various operators. He sternly warned that new clearance must be obtained before returning to site.

He recalled the suspension of mining and dredging activities by the Ministry across the State since 28th March, 2024 was to allow for a proper review and upgrade of operational guidelines in line with the policies of the current Administration . He also hinted on the new payment template enjoining them to key into it for a seamless transaction with government.

Urging the miners to adhere and be alive to their Corporate Social Responsibility [CSR]and commitment to government The Commissioner said that both the community and government should not be short-changed in the scheme of things.

"The note of warning I am giving today is an indication that it is not going to be business as usual going forward. If you are arrested for illegal mining and dredging, you will be made to face the full wrath of the law.

"Mining is a win-win thing if done responsibly but destructive and disruptive when it is irresponsibly carried out given the monumental financial effects it has on government and community at large. We have a collective responsibility to protect our environment and see that things are done according,"he said.

Responding on behalf of the miners and dredgers, Mr. Ebenezer Aina, commended the government for its efforts at ensuring that standard practice were adhered to in their operations.

Arrangements have been concluded for 2024 South West Athletics Conference tagged " Abeokuta SWAC 2024"

The event put together by the South West Zone of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, will take place between next Wednesday, 3rd and Saturday 6th July, 2024 at the Providence Hotel, Abeokuta beginning from 10am each day.

A statement by the Media Coordinator, South West Athletics Conference, Mr Biodun Alabi indicates that, Professor of Psychology at the University of Lagos, Akoka, Olatunde Makanju will be the keynote speaker while Former Captain of the Super Eagles, Chief Segun Odegbami and the Founder, Nilayo Sports Management Chief Nikola Olopade are among the Special guests.

The statement says that the senator representing Ogun West Senatorial district, Senator Olamilekan Adeola is the Conference Chairman while the Executive Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun is the Chief Host and Special Guest of Honour of the event.

The government and relevant sports stakeholders have been urged to revive school sports competitions, particularly the national football tournaments, to discover new talents.
 
The Director of Blitzik Sports Initiative, Mr. Isaac Afolabi, emphasized this need while donating sports items to Oyemekun Grammar School in Akure.
The donation was a collaboration between Blitzik Sports and the Community Sports and Education Development Initiative (CSED).
 
Mr. Afolabi, who also serves as the Vice Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ondo State chapter, and a sports journalist and analyst with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Positive 102.5 FM Akure, reminisced about the excitement of participating in national football tournaments such as the Shell Cup, Principals Cup, and Mobil Track and Field Games. He called for the revival of these competitions.
 
Speaking virtually about the initiative, the Director of CSED, Mr. Cornelius Ehimiaghe, stated that the gesture aimed to encourage schools to combine sports with education.
 Ehimiaghe dedicated the initiative to his late father, Mr. Israel Menson Ehimiaghe, who was a goalkeeper for Oyemekun Grammar School in the 1950s.
 
In response, the Principal of Oyemekun Grammar School, Mr. Ogunleye Okeowo, represented by the Vice-Principal, Mr. Yinka Bode, appreciated the donation, stressing that the school would make good use of the items.
 
Additionally, the school's sports Master and Mistress, Mr. Olayemi Jibola and Mrs. Ademola Adedoyin, commended Blitzik and CSED for the timely donation.
 
Speaking on behalf of the excited students, the school's football captain, Master Alabi Nicolas, expressed gratitude for the gift and assured its maintenance.
 
The items donated included sets of new jerseys, balls, socks, and training cones.

As part of activities marking year 2024 World Sports Journalists' Day, the Ogun state chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, will on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 train mass communication students of Chrisland University, Abeokuta on Advanced Specialized Sports writing

The training with the topic: "The Integral Role of Sports Journalism in the Media Landscape" will take place at the broadcast studio of the university on July 2, 2024.

The World Sports Journalists' Day is an annual international holiday for sports journalists to celebrate the importance of sports journalism as a unifying tool to bring people of diverse culture, religion, tribe and class together.

A former SWAN Vice President and veteran journalist, Deacon Kunle Olúwùsì will engage the students on elementary rudiment of sports writing, while the Assistant Manager News of Ogun State Television (OGTV), Biodun Alabi will also present a paper on sportscasting as an aspect of broadcast journalism.

The immediate past chairman of SWAN in Ogun state, Alh. Hakeem Akíntúndé will equally share his wealth of experience at the event.

The Ogun state Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka will declare the event open, while the Vice Chancellor, Chrisland University, Prof. Babalola will deliver the open remark beginning from 12noon.

The Chairman of the association in the state, Comrade Michael-azeez Ogunsiji urges members of the association to attend the event punctually.

The Ogun State Government has charged operators of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to leverage the various initiatives of the present administration geared towards boosting their businesses.

This admonition was given by the Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adebola Sofela at the hybrid stakehokders engagement meeting with MSMEs operators as well as Business Membership Organisations (BMOs) held at Oke-Mosan in Abeokuta and on digital platform.

Mr Sofela said the State government had implemented strategic reforms and initiatives aimed at improving business-enabling environment and increase private sector investments.

He said the reforms were structured to reduce the cost and time to complete business processes, adding that the Prince Dapo Abiodun administration introduced incentives, streamlined business registration processes through automation.

The Commissioner also pointed out that the State government included MSMEs in government contracts with improved access to finance to create a more conducive environment for entrepreneurs.

He further said that the government was promoting digital literacy and adoption of e-commerce platforms among entrepreneurs through partnership with technological companies to provide affordable digital tools and learning to ensure the MSMEs operators in the State are not left behind.

Mr Sofela also mentioned that significant investment had been made in developing industrial parks and business hub and economic zones just as he made reference to the Small Scale industries Land Acquisition Schemes (SILAS) in Ijebu Isiwo, which he said was an initiative of the present administration envisioned to serve as a catalyst for business growth.

"We have introduced various funding windows like the Ogun SME Financial Empowerment Scheme to address the prevailing challenges confronting enterpreneurs and lack of access to finance as well as high cost associated with business operations.

"We are committed to building the capacity of our MSMEs having realized the need for enhanced skills and knowledge in business management, financial planning and marketing among our MSMEs," Sofela said.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Olu. Ola. Aikulola, appreciated the stakeholders for their collaboration, just as he solicited for their cooperation towarss achieving more milestones.

According to him, the Prince Abiodun led government had many more lofty initiatives in the offing and you are expected to key into it any time we call on you.

In his remarks, the National President, Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria (ASBON), Dr. Femi Egbesola, who described Sofela as an SME-friendly Commissioner, assured the government of the support of small business owners in the State.

The meeting had in attendance the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria (ASBON), Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Ogun State Signage Agency (OGSAA), Ogun State Internal Revenue Service (OGIRS), Association of Nigerian Women in Business Network (ANWBN).

Others were Cobblers and Leather Artisans Association of Nigeria, Association of Skill and Vocational Artisans Association of Nigeria (ASVAN), Ogun State Chambers of Commerce Industry Mines and Agriculture (OGUNCCIMA), among others.

Ogun State government has inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee on the establishment of front offices to check the menace of touts in the state.

Inaugurating the committee at his Oke Mosan office, the Head of Service, Mr Kehinde Onasanya explained that the office would be established in each block within the state secretariat at Oke-Mosan.

Mr Onasanya noted that the initiative would enhance strict compliance to resumption time, curb loitering and other unofficial activities in the secretariat, hinting that Block A would be the pilot scheme.

He pointed out that members of the committee were expected to draw staff from Ministries, Departments and Agencies, as well as develop security personnel to man the front offices on rotational basis, partner private sector to key into the project as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility.

Mr Onasanya charged them to be alive to their responsibilities, to make the Civil Service more efficient and improve security within the office environment.

The HoS noted that the state Civil Service as one of the best in the nation, must sustain the good standard, in terms of discipline, work-ethics and conducive atmosphere for government business to thrive.

In a presentation on the project's objectives and methodology, the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Public Service Reforms, Mr. Jola Oyeneye, who also doubles as the coordinator of the project, explained that the project would go a long way in curbing insecurity and other unofficial activities which is now a cause of concern, as well as enhance staff productivity.

Mr. Oyeneye added that it would also ensure strict compliance to resumption time, while unofficial excuses from work would be reduced, just as blockage of revenue leakages, occasioned by unscrupulous activities of touts, particularly around revenue generating agencies.

He highlighted various methodologies in implementing the policy to include, blocking of all entries and existing routes against unwanted visitors, hawkers, loiters, as well as touts, saying that “clock in and clock out” system for effective monitoring would also be introduced.

Members of the inter-ministerial committee include, Permanent Secretaries from Bureaux of Public Service Reforms, Mr. Jola Oyeneye; Cabinet and Security Services, Alhaji Olanrewaju Saka and others in Block A of the state secretariat.

The Permanent Secretaries Teaching Service Commission, Mrs Melutia Ogunremi, Civil Service Commission, Mrs Roseline Jacobs, State Pensions, Mrs. Arinola Adetayo appreciated the state government for the laudable project saying that distraction during office hours would be curbed and effectiveness would be enhanced.

The Lawmaker representing Abeokuta South Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, Hon Moruf Afolabi Afuape has congratulated Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State on his appointment as Chairman, Southern Governors' Forum.

Hon Afuape in a congratulatory message posted on his Facebook page described Governor Abiodun emergence as the chairman of the Forum as well deserved.

The Ogun State Chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has congratulated the Chairman, Remo Stars football Club, Otunba Kunle Soname and management of the club for picking one of the Champions League tickets for Nigeria representatives.

Remo Stars football Club of Ikenne finished second behind Rangers football Club in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table with 65 points from 38 matches.

In a congratulatory message, the SWAN Chairman, Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji said the return of the club to the continent was as result of adequate preparation and hardwork.

Comrade Ogunsiji who noted that the consistency of the club on the continent showed some level of planning, said there was the need for the club management to improve on the striking position to enable the club move beyond the first round of the money spinning CAF Champions League.

"We want to congratulate the Chairman of Remo Stars football Club, Otunba Kunle Soname, management and the entire coaching crew for picking the ticket to represent Nigeria at the CAF Champions League.

"The team's qualification was well deserved having amassed 65 points from 38 matches, it is our desire and prayer to see the club playing in the group stage of the competition and possibly win the trophy."

Ogunsiji said the qualification of the club would further enhance productivity, the socio economic activities in not just Ikenne but also the adjourning communities.

SWAN, therefore, used the occasion to urge the newly promoted feeders team of the club, Beyond Limits Football Academy to the NPFL to sustain the momentum and winning mentality in the just concluded NNL season.
The association stressed that, it would be a delight to watch both Ogun state based teams competing for honours in the NPFL next season.

The SWAN Chairman, however, charged other football clubs such as Gateway United Football Club, Stormers Sporting Club, and Dino FC to strive hard in gaining promotion to the NPFL and NNL next season respectively.

In a bid to strengthen the existence of industries in the face of the economic realities in the country, the Ogun State Government has vowed to do all within its means to support the growth of companies across its 20 local government areas.

The Commissioner for Industries, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adebola Sofela, made this known during his strategic visit to African Industries Group ( AIG),Agbara in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government area of the State.

Mr Sofela in company of the Permanent Secretary and other top Management staff of the Ministry were received by the Managing Director of the company, Chief Sohan Bagla into the expansive facility.

Assuring investors of government support, the Commissioner said that the Prince Dapo Abiodun led government was intentional about creating an enabling environment not only for the existing business to thrive but also to attract new investors into the Gateway State.

He described the visit as a strategic move to further consolidate on the existing relationship between the State government and industries for a better result.

The Commissioner who appreciated various companies operating in Ogun for their resilience and belief in not just Nigeria but the State despite the present economic situation in the country, pointed out that there would be light at the end of the tunnel.

According to him, the present administration has put various reforms in place to strengthen the existence of industries.

"A lot has gone into our land administration system to fast-track the process of getting title documents without delay. We have a Business Enabling Council which consists of strategic stakeholders where we meet regularly to discuss how businesses operating in the State can do well on an incremental basis. The on-going infrastructural upgrade across the State is a demonstration of government willingness to redefine the landscape of Ogun State.

"The Prince Dapo Abiodun led government is focused on creating a conducive environment that will improve business growth and attract new ones. That is the reason we will do all within our means for industries growth so that you can continue to contribute your quota to the development of our dear State and Nigeria at large," Sofela said.

In a remark, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olu. Ola. Aikulola, said the commitment of the State government to addressing sundry issues bordering on Industry, Trade and Investment was second to none, just as he pointed out that the position of Ogun as the industrial capital of Nigeria was not by sheer luck but hard work.

In his remarks, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of AIG, Chief Sohan Bagla, disclosed that the company had been existing in Ogun for 52 years given the strategic location of the State and her laudable policy initiatives .

He assured that his organisation will continue to positively impact its various host communities in its Corporate Social Responsibility engagements without leaving any stone unturned.

On his part, the Group Executive Director of the company Barrister Uche Iwuamadi, described the Gateway State as one of the most peaceful in the country, which he said informed the decision of the organisation to concentrate 60 per cent of its national investment in the State.

Oba Adewunmi Odutala, the Onibudo of Ayetoro-Budo Ota in Ado Odo Ota local government has expressed concern over the state Governors attempts to block the local government's autonomy.

Oba Odutala while speaking with journalists on the occasion of Eid El Kabir said the local government are the closest to the people, adding that the approval will further enhance development.

"The federal government is trying to give the local government autonomy, but the state Governors are blocking it, what are they are hiding. Ogun State Government has inaugurated a 29-man committee of Team Ogun for the upcoming 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games, 2024.

Inaugurating the committee at the Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja Abeokuta, Commissioner for Sports Development, Mr Wasiu Isiaka urged the members of the committee to strive to ensure that the state host the best festival ever in the history of the competition.

Describing the NSF as one of the most important event in the national sporting calendar to foster unity among youths and Nigerians, regardless of ethnic, religion and political affiliations, Mr Isiaka said the onus lies on the committee to steer the affairs of the Sports Festival to be held between January 12 and January 26, 2025

He noted that the hosting rights granted to the State was a product of deliberate and intentional effort of the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, to lay a solid foundation for Sports development, whilst using same as a veritable tool to engage and create a greater tomorrow for the teeming youths in the State.

The Commissioner for sports development expressed optimism that the festival would no doubt bring about enormous development in the annals of Ogun State and serves as an affiliation of the limitless potentials of the State by revealing our shared values of excellence, thoroughness, industriousness and hospitality.

The Ogun State Government has said that it is working round the clock to ensure harmonization of taxes and levies to reduce the incidence of double taxation that may affect the revenue base of businesses.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adebola Sofela, during his strategic visit to the Head Office of Nestle Nigeria, where he was received by its Managing Director, Mr. Wassim Elhusseini, in Lagos.

Sofela said that his visit was occasioned by the need to boost the existing relationship of Ogun State with its various stakeholders to further collaborate and share ideas on areas of common interest.

The Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu has promised to partner the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Ogun State Chapter to ensure the success of forthcoming National Festival tagged 'Gateway Games 2024".

Senator Salisu gave the promise while addressing the sports journalists at the birthday ceremony of the Executive chairman of Obafemi Owode Local government, Hon. Adesina Ogunsola held in Abeokuta.

The lawmaker who described the partnership with Sports Writers as crucial to the overall development of sports in the country encouraged them to do everything within their power to ensure that the biennial event in Ogun State becomes a force to be reckoned with.

Salisu who underscores the importance of Sports as a tool for youths empowerment, maintained that the association must begin to create more awareness about the preparedness of the state government.

He, however, assured that, he would create a window of entertainment and engagement for the youths during the festival as the Senator representing Ogun Central.

Ogun State government has admonished various companies within its 20 local government areas to prioritise qualified residents of their host communities for job opportunities, to further promote cordial relationship with people in the locations of their operations.

Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adebola Sofela, stated this when he hosted the management staff of Hayat Kimya Nigeria Limited, led by its Country Manager, Mr. Omotayo Olatunji, in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta,

The Executive Chairman, Obafemi Owode Local government, Ambassador Adesina Ogunsola has commended the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria SWAN, Ogun State chapter for staging the 3rd edition of the media cup competition in the state.

Ambassador Ogunsola gave the commendation after performing the kick off ceremony for the 3rd edition of SWAN Oluwalogbon Electronics media cup held at the Fun Turf Stadium, Kuto Abeokuta.

The Council Chairman who also lauded the spirit of sportsmanship demonstrated by the football teams of various media organizations said such competition should be extended to other local government areas of the state to promote and develop sports at the grassroots level.

Ambassador Ogunsola noted that the competition would go a long to achieve the purpose of uniting and sustain the existing relationship among the various media practitioners in the state especially with the forthcoming National Sports Festival.

He renewed his determination to support any initiatives that would enhance the physical and mental capabilities of sports journalists in the state.

The long arm of the law has finally caught up with a notorious land grabber in Ogun State, Sulaimon Adelakun, for his alleged involvement in illegal possession of firearms and breaching public peace.

Adelakun who was arrested by the men of the Ogun State Police Command was said to have attacked different communities in the state, and forcefully taken over their properties.

Adelakun's reign of terror has left a trail of fear and insecurity among residents in the Mowe and Atan-Ota areas in the Obafemi-Owode and Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Areas respectively.

It was gathered that Sulaimon Adelakun, known locally as "Olori odo," was arrested by law enforcement authorities on Thursday at Atan Ota following reports of his violent activities targeting landowners.

According to the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, the arrest was made in response to complaints from residents who had been subjected to threats and attacks by Adelakun and his cohorts.

Confirming the arrest to our correspondent, Odutola said, “Yes, a notorious land grabber, Sulaimon Adelakun was arrested by police yesterday (Thursday) at Atan Ota for attacking people on their land, but no life was lost.”

Investigations, however, revealed that yesterday’s arrest of Adelakun was not the first time.

It was learnt that the suspect had previously faced arrest on two separate occasions for similar charges, only to be released by law enforcement authorities.

Sources familiar with the matter disclosed that despite the gravity of the accusations against him, Adelakun managed to evade prolonged detention.

Similarly, a document by the Department of Public Prosecution in Ogun State and sighted by our correspondent dated June 2022, showed how the Ministry of Justice recommended to the Police that Adelakun should be charged with conspiracy to commit a felony.

Another document addressed to the Criminal Investigation Department of Ogun State Police Commanda from the state DPP said findings revealed that Adelakun invaded different communities to forcefully take possession of lands.

The letter signed by the Director, Public Prosecutions, A.O. Ajewole partly read, “The facts of the case as gathered from the police duplicate case file are that on 31/10/2021, 4/11/2021 and 2/2/2020 respectively, the 4th suspect- Sulaimon Adelakun who claims that all the landed properties in Orita-Araromi Village belongs to his father, invaded the village with thugs amongst whom are the 1st-3rd suspects, ts, one Peter Odoko; Bode (a.k.a Energy) and some others at large. The complainants reported the incidents through a petition to the police and the suspects herein were arrested. Hence police investigation.

“I have carefully considered the facts of this case. Available evidence revealed that the suspects were arrested in connection with the incidents that occurred on 31/10/2021, 4/11/2021 and 2/2/2022 respectively on various sites within Araromi-Orita Village when the suspects invaded the sites armed with dangerous weapons and inflicted injuries on workers found on the site.

“It is evident that Mutiu Muftaudeen, Gbenga Oshunkoya and Tajudeen Sanusi sustained injuries from the attack on 31/10/2021 while Taiwo Abiodun, Bello Akeem and Shina Adebisi sustained injuries during the attack on 4/11/2021.

“It is also clear that Peter Odoko and Bode (a.k.a Energy) have been arrested, prosecuted and sentenced in respect of the incident of 31/10/21 while the 1st- 4th suspects herein escaped. Hence there is sufficient evidence against them and it is recommended that the 1st-4th suspects should be charged as follows:

“Conspiracy to commit an offence contrary to Section 510 of the Criminal Code Law, Laws of Ogun State, 2006

“Assault, contrary to Section 351 of the Criminal Code Law, Laws of Ogun State.

“Demand for fee contrary to Section 11 of the Prohibition of Forcible Occupation, Landed Properties, Armed Robbery, Kidnapping. Cultism and Other Anti-Violence and Other Related Offences, Law, 2016.

“It has also been established that the 4th suspect engages in the business of selling landed properties without authority, hence in addition to the above, the 4th suspect- Sulaimon Adelakun should be charged with the offence of sale of Property without Authority, contrary to section 8(1) of the Prohibition of Forcible Occupation of Landed Properties, Armed Robbery, Kidnapping, Cultism and other Anti-violence and Other Related Offences Law, 2016

“As regards the incidents of 4/11/21 and 2/2/22, the Police is urged to conduct more investigation to confirm the culprits for possible prosecution.”

Following his arrest, residents of some of the communities he has invaded expressed worry, alleging that the suspect would soon find a way to leave the police’s territory.

The Baale of Araromi Orita Atan-Ota, in Ado-Odo Ota local government area of Ogun state, Chief Olusegun Odeyemi, expressed grave concern over Adelakun's continued reign of terror in the community.

In a desperate plea for help, Odeyemi highlighted Adelakun's history of violence, citing a previous incident where he allegedly injured several residents during an invasion.

Speaking out against the injustice perpetrated by Adelakun, the community head urged the state government and law enforcement agencies to take decisive action to protect the community from further harm.

He stressed that Adelakun, who hails from Joga, has no legitimate claim to property in the area and is merely a land grabber exploiting the vulnerability of residents.

Recounting his ordeal with the land grabber, the Alakoso of Araromi Orita, Prince Rasheed Olaleye said he was brutally attacked by Adelakun.

Olaleye said he was mercilessly beaten at a junction in the area, resulting in severe injuries and a spike in his blood pressure.

“On December 7, 2023, Sule Olori Odo attacked me at a junction, I was beaten mercilessly without doing anything, one Gbenga was trying to rescue me, he was blocking the man so that those guys could not hurt me more.

“I was taken to a nurse who told me that my BP was high. I have all the evidence with me. Mr Gbenga said I was the one who reported those who were kidnapped, and that was the reason why I was beaten.

“Gbenga has been the one appearing in court for him any time he has cases in Court. Gbenga is doing all this because he was given land by Adelakun on our site at Atan.

“I don't know the kind of power or backup that he has. Whenever police arrest him, he will be released, no matter what he has committed. He is waxing stronger in this bad character. Everyone knows him at Atan. His boys are on a rampage, so I have to leave the town,” he stated.

The Executive Board Member, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi has described Customs Football team as pride of Ogun State that must receive the needed support to succeed.

Alhaji Majekodunmi who is also the Chairman, Ogun State Football Association stated this when he paid a working visit to the Controller, Ogun Area I Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. James Ojo at his Idiroko Office.

Describing the Customs football team as one of the oldest teams in the state, the NFF Board Member noted that the existence of the team had continued to provide job opportunities for the youths in the state, leading to the reduction of societal ills.

He explained the visit to the command was part of the responsibility of the State football association to discuss with stakeholders on the need to develop sports at the grassroots levels.

He maintained that the team's participation in the NLO had increased the slot of Ogun State representatives in the Nigeria Football League.

Alhaji Majekodunmi commended the efforts of the Controller to ensure the participation of the customs football team in the various competitions being organized in the state.

The Customs FC currently played in the Division One of the Nigeria Football League, NLO.

Responding the Customs Controller, Comptroller James Ojo reaffirmed the commitment of the command to partner with the Ogun State football Association to promote sports at the grassroots levels.

Comptroller Ojo gave the assurance that efforts would be intensified to ensure that the football team receive the necessary attention its deserved.

"It is highly impressive that Customs could have a team in the National Division one of the Nigerian League. This is a feat that has been achieved as a result of hard work on the part of the players and the officials.

"So we discuss at length the possibility of the Customs service absorbing the team as an entity. So I did give them my words that I'm going to write to the Comptroller-General of Customs who I know is a sport loving personality to see what he can do to assist this team.

"But before then, myself and my colleagues here at the local level, we have made up our minds to contribute from our salaries from henceforth to assist the team in their cause for national Honours."

Highpoint of the visit was the presentation of the official emblem of the Super Eagles Jersey to the Controller.

The Executive Chairman, Obafemi Owode Local government, Ambassador Adesina Ogunsola has solicited the support of well meaning individuals and organizations to join the current administration's efforts to reposition the sports sector.

Ambassador Ogunsola who made the call while speaking with sports journalists in Abeokuta at the final of Egba Youth Championship reaffirmed his commitment to use the instrumentality of sports to reduce societal vices among youths in the council area.

Describing sports as an important tool to promote economic development of any society if harnessed effectively, Ogunsola promised to partner relevant stakeholders to develop sports at the grassroots levels.

"It is obvious that sports remain an important tool to take away unemployed youths away from the streets and reduce all forms of social vices, we need to support government efforts to reposition the sector since the task of developing sports should be left in the hands of government alone.

"I will ensure I replicate this kind of youth development programme at the local government for our youths to exhibit their talents and potentials.

"I'm calling on private individuals to support Prince Dapo Abiodun's government to see how we can jointly reduce crime rate in our society through sports programme like this. If we can engage our youths, they would not be involved in Cultism, thuggery and other social vices."

Ambassador Ogunsola, therefore, urged grassroots football coaches to invent programmes to develop and nurture talents for the state football team, Gateway United Football Club.

The President, Remo Stars Football Club has charged the new Super Eagles invitee, Sodiq Ismail to justify his invitation to the national team by proving himself useful to the team.

Speaking with Journalists, the EYFC Patron who is also the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Dapo on Health, Dr Kehinde Ololade expressed delight the improvement in the fifth edition the competition, noting the tournament would continue to get better.

Dr Ololade said the competition had lived up to its billing especially in job creation and eradicating societal vices among youths in Egba.

Also, the executive chairman, Obafemi Owode Local government, Ambassador Adesina Ogunsola described the competition as laudable assuring that the council area would continue to partner the organizers to development the round leather game at the grassroots.

The initiator of the competition, Chief Olalekan Shoyinka who explained that the competition was borne out of the need to strengthen the existing relationship among the youths in the state especially in Egbaland thanked the people for their supports for the success of the competition.

Chief Shoyinka who pointed out that part of the plans of the organizers was to inaugurate a project within the community of the winner of the competition to serve a morale booster to other youths solicited the support of the well meaning individuals and organizations to achieve the set goals.

The Ministry of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy and the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) have sealed a pact to develop a framework for financing the creative industry's growth.

The Memorandum of Understanding which was signed on Friday, in Abuja
aims to revitalize the sector, unlock its vast potential, and contribute significantly to Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product of $100b by 2030 and create two million jobs by 2027.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Minister, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, expressed optimism that this collaboration will unleash the full potential of Nigeria's creative industry, transforming it into a significant contributor to the nation's economy and a major revenue generator.

“Today, we take a bold step forward in fulfilling this mandate of the Ministry in partnership with NESG, a leading private sector-led think tank dedicated to transforming Nigeria into an open, sustainable, and globally competitive economy. Our collaboration with NESG is grounded in a clear set of objectives - to develop a robust governance structure for the art, culture, and creative industries.

“The Ministry is pleased to build on the foundation laid in the draft Cultural Policy designed to promote cultural integration, preserve national values, and safeguard Nigeria's rich cultural heritage. This policy will articulate clear objectives and strategies to enhance cultural development, language preservation, historiography, and the promotion of cultural diversity and inclusivity.

Minister Musawa said that the Ministry and NESG have co-created a policy thrust for a comprehensive national policy on the creative economy, which will provide strategic direction, outline key objectives, and establish regulatory mechanisms to foster growth, innovation, and sustainability within the sector.

“Once approved, the policy will be pushed to the National Assembly for their assent to establish the Act that will create a Central Authority for Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy and establish a fund, in alignment with the Ministry’s Key Performance Indicator (KPI) No. 2 which is to establish and operationalize a central authority to catalyze and coordinate the Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy from either a merger of existing parastatals in the Ministry or establishment of a new parastatal/Agency, as may be required.”


Earlier, the Nigerian Economic Summit Group's lead and Chief Executive, Dr. Tayo Aduloju, described the MoU as a watershed moment in the history of the Nigerian creative industry. He emphasized that the Creative Economy Working Group will drive public-private dialogue on industry matters and facilitate collaboration among stakeholders.

"The Creative Economy Working Group will serve as a stable platform for public-private dialogue, enabling swift decision-making on critical issues. By fostering industrial associations within cultural and creative sectors, we will facilitate collective engagement and effective stakeholder collaboration.

“Through capacity-building initiatives, we aim to unlock Nigeria's creative potential, driving entrepreneurship and employability among youth across the country. Even policymakers and lawmakers will undertake study visits and experiential learning across different continents to improve governance framework.’’

In his remarks, Mr James Sule, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, hailed the MoU as a landmark achievement in revitalizing the art, culture, and creative economy sector. He highlighted the partnership's goals of fostering economic growth, showcasing homegrown talent, and attracting both local and international investment.

“The Ministry looks forward to NESG’s assistance in the areas of review of extant policies, regulations and legislative frameworks in the sectors and recommend amendment and/or enactment of laws, policies regulations for executive approval, especially as they affect cultural and creative economy.

“Furthermore, NESG is expected to provide adequate and sustainable solutions to address the infrastructural gaps in the sectors. It is also to ensure exchange of experts and researchers in the relevant fields to enable shared intelligence for informed decision-making and for the parties to interact through meetings, conferences, events, festivals and symposia”.

With this historic partnership, Nigeria's creative industry is poised for transformative growth, paving the way for a brighter future for the country's youth, creatives, and economy as a whole.

The New National Anthem of Old: My View

As the nation continues to gallop in economic holocaust giving no chance for the needed reliefs, Nigerians woke up to the news of bringing back the colonial National Anthem for our fatherland.

Perhaps, the political gladiators must have thought that bringing back the old anthem will provoke the spirits of our fallen heroes to rebuild Nigeria within a spate of time. That I cannot tell. What is is so surprising is the speed at which the bill landed, approved and signed into law by the Legislative and the executive arms of our nation.

If laws to control the price of domestic items had been passed quickly, maybe, Nigerians would have been relieved of food crisis. If laws to adequately maintain roads had been quickly passed, maybe we should be competing with the land of our colonial master right now. If laws to revive our educational sector had been quickly passed and assented to, maybe, the quality of education would have improved and better restored.

Invoking the spirit of late Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sardauna of Sokoto, Obafemi Awolowo and the rest is not a bad idea. Rather, it would have been better to also seize this opportunity to REDESIGN OUR NATIONAL FLAG for a new identity.

When South Africa returned from the apartheid and democracy was restore, the great Mandiba, Nelson Mandela rebranded the nation’s flag to the joy of all. Maybe it is time to do same for our nation.

In the meantime, the president and the Legislators should be commended for achieving this feat. For once, they have proved to the nation that they can work together harmoniously for the good of our dear country.

Meanwhile, our government should remember that the old Anthem hates corruption. It must not be stained. Otherwise, we won’t have anything to go return back to. The Anthem hates moral decadence, hardships, poverty, poor roads, poor wages, insecurity, kidnapping, and weak Naira. It hates arbitrary wastage of tax payers money by political moneybags and underdevelopment. How do we tackle all these?

In addition to rebranding the national flag, it is also about time to amend our constitution on the academic qualifications of those who run the affairs of government at all levels. Rishi Sunak, Joe Biden, Macron are not average certificate holders (GSSCE) as currently being entrenched in our constitution. In order not to be pulled back in the future, it’s time to do the needful. Pull it off!

In conclusion, I see the new but old National Anthem as a symbol of true unity, peace and progress which can bring back the old glory of our nation. It is about time to rejig our patriotism to our nation and for our government to show some love to citizens by rising up to our needs at all times.

The older the wine, the better the state. Welcome back, our National Anthem of honor.
