Over the years, successive administrations have sidestepped the issue of petrol subsidy, each employing different terminologies to obscure the reality. From President Jonathan to President Buhari, and now President Tinubu, fuel subsidies have persisted, albeit under various guises. President Tinubu’s bold declaration that "subsidy is gone" barely lasted three months before the naira floatation policy effectively reinstated the subsidy.

During President Jonathan’s tenure, subsidies were directly debited from the national budget, allowing fuel marketers to exploit the system through over-invoicing and fictitious fuel deliveries. The EFCC’s probe into the subsidy regime and the recoveries made exposed the extent of this corruption. President Buhari, while labeling the subsidy as fraudulent, deflected responsibility to the NNPC. The National Oil Company then became the sole importer of petroleum products under an 'under-recovery' arrangement, trading crude oil in exchange for refined products. Despite these measures, the Buhari administration left trillions of naira in debt to the NNPC, a burden inherited by President Tinubu.

As of August 2023, the NNPC, now a limited liability company as per the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), is struggling to balance its new commercial role while ensuring national fuel security. The NNPC has been selling petrol at half its landing cost—approximately ₦1,120 per litre—under a 'forex differential' arrangement with the Federal Government. This price difference has been partially offset by the NNPC's royalty, tax, and dividend payments to the Federation Account, but these funds barely scratch the surface of the financial gap. The resulting financial exposure has strained the NNPC’s relationships with major suppliers, leading to supply chain disruptions.

One critical issue is that despite the subsidy allowing the NNPC to sell petrol at a discounted rate of ₦570 per litre to marketers and depot owners, Nigerian citizens are not benefiting from this arrangement. Instead, the real beneficiaries are private depot owners and neighboring countries. Until last week, before the price hike, some depot owners sold PMS at a staggering ₦890 to ₦920 per litre to independent petrol marketers, who then added their logistics and profit margins, further burdening the citizens. Independent petrol stations account for about 80% of fuel outlets in Nigeria, explaining why a few stations, including NNPC outlets, sell petrol at ₦600 to ₦650 per litre, while others charge ₦950 and above. Regulatory bodies, however, continue to turn a blind eye to this.

The recent developments surrounding the Dangote refinery and the NNPC's fuel price hikes suggest a calculated move. However, unless Dangote starts paying for crude oil in naira and the international crude oil price falls alongside the exchange rate, the refinery’s petrol prices will remain higher than the NNPC’s. Dangote's statement that the government will determine the refinery's price is more political than practical. In a deregulated market, government intervention in setting prices for a private company’s product is unlikely. Without some form of government intervention—perhaps a subsidy or price differential arrangement—Dangote's prices, based on current oil trading templates, will exceed NNPC's.

Rather than hastily raising fuel prices, the NNPC should have waited for Dangote to publicly announce its ex-depot price, which would likely be higher than the NNPC’s. The NNPC could then step in to manage prices through subsidy or price control measures. Given last week’s public outcry, any further price increase by the NNPC would be untenable. The only viable path forward is for the NNPC to remain the sole off-taker of petrol from Dangote, covering the price differential to ensure fuel security, stabilizing pump prices, and mitigating inflation and market volatility.

In conclusion, President Tinubu’s administration must urgently convene an oil and gas stakeholders forum to transparently address these issues and develop a unified, agreed-upon solution. Dangote, the government, and relevant agencies must collaborate as partners to ensure a smooth operation that benefits the nation and its citizens.

The Chairmanship Candidate of Action Democratic Party (ADP) in Ogun State Chief Olalekan Shoyinka, popularly known as “Ayinla Egba,” has promised to change the face of leadership if elected in the November Local government elections.

Speaking after his unveiling as the party’s consensus candidate for the chairmanship of Abeokuta South Local Government in the upcoming local government elections, Chief Shoyinka vowed to prioritise good governance, promising to bring a new narrative to leadership given the opportunity to serve the people.

“We are going to do good. We are going to use the office to ensure good governance,” he stated.

He emphasised that his administration would be people-centred, driven by the interests and needs of the residents.

“We have no choice but to run people-interest governance because this is not our last bus stop,” he added, hinting at his larger political aspirations beyond the chairmanship role.

Unveiling Ayinla Egba during the state congress and party primaries held in Abeokuta, ADP leaders, led by the state chairperson Yeye Olufunke Olanrewaju, expressed their confidence in Ayinla Egba as the right choice to lead the local government.

the party also presented its candidates for councillors positions across the 15 political wards within the local government area.

As Nigeria joined the rest of the world to mark the International Literacy Day, a Non-governmental Association for Literacy Services and Support, NOGALSS has called for a concerted efforts from government and individuals towards creating more literate, just, peaceful, and sustainable society.

The Chairman of the Association in Ogun State, Mr Wale Shodeinde made the call in a message in Abeokuta to commemorate the 2024 International Literacy Day with the theme "Promoting multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and peace"

Mr Shodeinde noted that the theme for
International Literacy Day was an opportunity to unpack issues related to literacy in multilingual contexts for achieving lasting peace, and explore possible solutions for enhancing policies, lifelong learning systems, governance, programmes, and practices.

Describing Literacy as a fundamental human right that empowered individuals to participate actively in the society, the NOGALSS Chairman also underscored the importance of literacy for social and economic development, enabling people to access information and improve their livelihoods.

He reiterated the commitment of the association to work with relevant stakeholders and organisations to addressing the global challenge especially lack basic literacy skills through literacy programmes.

The aggrieved Youths under the umbrella of All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ijebu North Local government area of Ogun State have accused the Secretary to Ogun State government, Mr Tokunbo Talabi for allegedly imposing the immediate past Chairman of the council area, Hon Mobolaji Odusanya on party executives and members.

Addressing Journalists at the Iwe Iroyin, Abeokuta, one of the aggrieved Youths, Kamoru Adeoye appealed to Ogun State government to intervene and allow all interested candidates engage in direct primaries to test their popularity and acceptability.

Adeoye noted that the action of Mr Tokunbo Talabi negated the decision of the Governor and will throw Ijebu North into an intractable crisis.

"We, the aggrieved party stakelholders of Ijebu North Local Government, Ogun State, express our displeasure over an alleged plot by the Secretary to the Ogun State Government (SSG) Mr. Tokunbo Talabi to impose the immediate past Chairman of the local government, Hon. Mobolaji Odusanya on party executives and members"

"We wish to bring to your notice that, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi (SSG) is planning to handpicked Hon. Mobolaji Odusanya as the consensus candidate of the party which is directly against the will of the Governor This is after the state governor, His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun has said any disloyal party member should not be consider by the Party for any elective position in the forthcoming local government elections in the state"

He noted that Hon. Mobolaji Odusanya was among the 17 council chairmen including Wale Adedayo that accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of embezzling the local government allocation.

"Infact he (Mobolajı Odusanya) was number 2 on the list signed, And he is also amongst the chairman that rejected the official vehicle purchased for them by His Excellency"

He appealed to the Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun and political leaders in the local government to intervene and allow all interested candidates engage in direct primaries to test their popularity and acceptability.

It will be recalled that Wale Adedayo had on July 27, 2024 listed Hon Bolaji Odusanya and 15 others accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of hijacking the funds meant for local government in the state.

"On July, 27 2024, Mr. Wale Adedayo in an interview with TheCable’s Abdulsalam Abdullah, the former LG chair spoke on issues surrounding his dismissal from office and reeled out the names of 17 Local Government Chairman that voted in favour of the content of the letter written by Mr. Wale Adedayo, the then Executive Chairman Ijebu East Local Government, regarding the hijacking of funds meant for local government by Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun.

Wale Adedayo in the interview said, "we held a meeting at Abeokuta South Local Government where we voted on the content of the letter that bothered on hijacking of Local Government funds by Prince Dapo Abiodun and 17 of us voted in favour of it. Only three people opted out., Ijebu North-East, Odeda, and Obafemi were the three LGAs that opted out."

The Chairman Ogun State Football Association Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi has assured that preparations are at the apex for Wednesday's Bet9ja State League Final.

Starting from 1pm on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, Imisioluwa FC and Mission Soccer Football Academy will lock horns at the Gateway stadium, Sagamu.

Alhaji Majekodunmi, an Executive Board Member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed that football stakeholders across the Southwest and beyond, are scheduled to be in attendance, while also assuring that the state football governing body has put measures in place to ensure a hitch free finale.

A leading aspirant for Obafemi Owode Local government, under the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Olufemi Israel Oyedele has unveiled his plans towards the development of the council area of given the opportunity.

The Nigerian Civil Society Network has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to thoroughly investigate the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for alleged abuse of office.

The civil group also accused Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, of abusing his position by “unjustly” remanding Nigerians in prison without bail.

The NCSN stated this on Monday in a press statement signed by its coordinator, Godwin Sunday Ade.


The group accused the National Security Adviser of arbitrary arrest and detention of Nigerian citizens.


They expressed worry over the disappearance of Binance Executive, Mr. Naseem Anjarwalla from federal government detention in March 22, 2024, under the watch of the NSA.


They said the silence surrounding his whereabouts and failure to hold anyone accountable for the breach of national security was troubling.

Recall that, Mr. Anjarwalla, alongside his colleague, Tigran Gambaryan, were detained in an Abuja guest house on charges of tax evasion and money laundering by the federal government.


His escape was reportedly facilitated when guards on duty escorted him to a nearby mosque from which he fled the country using a Kenyan passport.

They noted that the lack of transparency of the NSA was unacceptable and raised serious questions about integrity and professionalism within the NSA’s office.


Similarly, the Civil Society Network accused Justice Emeka Nwite of unjustly remanding Nigerians who oppose the federal government’s policies in prison without bail.

They claimed that Justice Nwite had remanded some Nigerians on the order of the NSA.

The statement further read: “We are equally disturbed by President Tinubu’s silence on this matter. The President’s failure to question the escaped suspect or suspend those responsible pending an immediate investigation suggests a concerning lack of accountability at the highest levels of government.

“Furthermore, under the NSA’s watch, prominent protest leaders Adaramoye Michael, aka Michael Lenin, and Mosiu Sodiq remain in detention. Reports indicate that these activists were detained on the direct orders of the NSA. Damilare Adenola, Director of Mobilisation for the Take It Back Movement, revealed that Lenin’s home was raided, and he was assaulted during his arrest. It appears that Nuhu Ribadu has been using the office of the NSA to target political adversaries, raising serious concerns about the nature of advice he provides to the president on security matters. This abuse of office by the NSA may be linked to his ambition to secure the highest seat in the land in 2027.

“Additionally, allegations have surfaced that Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, who is frequently assigned cases involving individuals in conflict with the Federal Government, has been abusing his position to unjustly remand Nigerian citizens in prison without bail, often in exchange for bribes.

“This conduct not only tarnishes his office but also constitutes a profound betrayal of his professional oath. We have it on good authority that Justice Nwite has remanded some Nigerians on the order of NDLEA.

“Justice Emeka Nwite, known for presiding over numerous high-profile cases, has been accused of indefinitely remanding suspects, thereby jeopardizing the lives, families, and businesses of hardworking Nigerians.

“Justice Nwite has become a tool for unscrupulous politicians to punish their political adversaries. He presided over Omoyele Sowore’s case, and his handling of Yahaya Bello’s case has been marked by troubling inconsistencies that defy logic. It is particularly troubling that a suspect could escape under the NSA’s custody without clear explanation, suggesting potential corruption within the security and immigration services.

“We urge President Tinubu and the Attorney General of the Federation to launch a thorough investigation into these allegations and to ensure that justice is served without corruption or favoritism.

“The ongoing protests against bad governance (ENDBADGOVERNMENT) reflect the public’s frustration with the injustices within the judiciary and security systems. The government must take immediate action to restore the trust of Nigerians by addressing these serious issues.

“Nigeria as a country is a joke. 41 underaged young boys were brought from IRT Abuja and were sent to the correctional centre in Kuje (Kuje Prison) without iota of remorse that they are still very young. 2 of the boys were rejected so 39 of them are in the Kuje Prison as at today which is bad for the country. When they were asked their ages they said the police told them to lie about their ages that they are 17 years and above that if they don’t they will kill them. They also said about 9 of their colleague died in the Sars cell (Abattoir) where they were kept after being brought from different part of the northern states because of ENDBAD GOVERNMENT peaceful protest.

“A judge who called himself a father and a leader sent so many children to the prison in the name of following what he was asked to do by the government.

“Justice Emeka Nwite is being inhuman to have sent his grandchildren to the prison and he is one of the corrupt Judges that is ruining our judiciary system. Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has remanded 124 peaceful protesters for 60 days in the name of pending conclusion of investigation and which he can abandon them in the prison for as long as he cares because he has to meet the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) with the National Security Adviser (NSA) is also involved; they are toying with the lives of good citizens of Nigeria who participated in peaceful protest which is their right.

“Why is Nigeria making the international body laugh at us and see the President as a person who is not competent of managing the affairs of our great country Nigeria.

“The above protesters are alleged to have committed offences of acts of terrorism, treason and treasonable fellonies, arson and terrorism just because of peaceful protest and this are the the charges Mallam Nuhu Ribadu always label on anyone who comes out to exercise his other National right or to notify the President of his questionable character and all the cases are being channeled to the almighty Justice Emeka Nwite of Federal High Court 9, Abuja because he is the judiciary tool used to frustrate Nigerians and shut them up in Kuje Prison in the name of not granting the bail. Miss Elizabeth Ogochukwu, a litigation secretary prosecution section of the IRT, Force Headquarters Abuja can confirm that the NSA has planned it all with the Attorney General of the Federation and Justice Emeka Nwite to ruin our dear country.

“Even the Controller General of Correctional Service rejected some of the underaged protesters that Justice Emeka Nwite has directed to be remanded in Kuje Prison by Mallam Nuhu Ribadu (NSA).

“This is a warning to the President that he is sitting on a time bomb which is about to be detonated so he needs to take action about the sabotoers of his Administration.

“The President should be explicit enough to make the people of Nigeria know why he employed Mallam Nuhu Ribadu as his National Security Adviser and is it that the NSA is bigger than the President or the country. Mr. President, please be assured that Nigerians are tired of the malicious attitude of the NSA and Justice Emeka Nwite.

“Nigerians want to know who is ruling our dear country; is it the NSA or President Bola Tinubu? Nigeria has spent so much money on security and yet the NSA has not been courageous enough to make an impact in the security terrain which is why he was appointed rather he kept gallivanting and taking over the inspector general of police and all service chief duties which make him see himself bigger than even the President.”

An Ogun State chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Akintunde Armstrong has debunked report that he is imposing councilorship candidates for Iperu Ward 3 and 5 in Ikenne Local Government Area of the state.

Armstrong has also denied ever saying that he would buy the two wards over with a staggering sum of $80,000 to ensure his two loyalists pick the councilorship tickets for the two Wards.

He said that all of these are best described as "the ranting of rudderless opposition to tarnish my image, misinform the public and score cheap political points".

The Iperu Remo born politician disclosed this on Friday while reacting to a report alleging him of boasting to use cash and influence to impose his two loyalists,Olaleye Babatunde and Osularu Olabanjo Muyiwa as the councilorship candidates for the party in the November 16 local government elections in the state.

Armstrong was also alleged to have also boasted that even the governor, Dapo Abiodun who is even from one of these wards cannot stop him from going ahead with the alleged imposition.

The property merchant has however put a lie to all these allegations describing them as baseless, unfounded and idle talk of the opposition and should therefore be ignored by the members of the public.

Armstrong said "I am totally shocked and surprised with these unfounded and outright falsehood being peddled about by some opposition elements.

"How could someone in his right senses with this harsh economy be boasting about to spend a whopping sum of $80,000 which can't be less than N120m to impose councilorship candidates? It is just sheer absurdity and lies from the pit hell.

"They equally said I boasted that even the governor cannot stop me, is that not height of foolishness? His Excellency, Gov Dapo Abiodun is my leader and mentor, he is the leader of the party and it is wherever he goes that I will also go too. So, no truth in all of their hogwash and attempts to disparage me before the governor.

He said that the video his opposition was circulating was talking about the fund the Dapo Abiodun Continuity Agenda has earmarked to further support and empower the party members just as the political group had been doing all over the state since its establishment in 2019.

The property merchant has therefore pledged his loyalty to the Governor and the party and reiterated his promise to support the party not only in producing the right candidates but to also help the ruling party to achieve landslide victory in the forthcoming November 16 local government elections.

Ogun State government has called for peace and mutual understanding among investors, farmers and other stakeholders within its forest reserves.

Commissioner for Forestry, Engr. Taiwo Oludotun, who made the call at a peace meeting with stakeholders from Ilaro, at the Ministry's Conference Room, said investors were partners in progress, assuring that government was determined to protect their interests and investments.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Forestry, Mr. Timothy Olatunji, the Commissioner frowned at the influx of herdsmen within Ilaro Forest Reserve, warning that such unwholesome act should henceforth stop, while calling on the leaders of the herdsmen to be more proactive at ensuring their members keep off the forest reserves.

"Government would no longer fold its arms and watch herdsmen threaten law-abiding citizens with dangerous weapons and AK-47 rifles in and around the Forest", he said.

"In the olden days, it was only spears and long sticks that herdsmen are known to carry, unlike nowadays when they handle dangerous weapons when they are not going to war front", he said.

Contributing, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Inter-Ethnic Affairs, Alhaji Hadi Sani, assured the investors that the state government would put all machinery in action, to protect its investments.

On his part, a representative of the investors, Prince Bayo Kuyeri of Domedayo Farms, appreciated government for securing their investments, calling on farmers to cooperate with them to ensure peace and progress within the forest reserves.

Also, Chairman, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Ado-Odo/Ota, Ipokia and Yewa Local Governments, Alhaji Musa Adams, promised to call his members to order.

As part of his efforts to address the healthcare needs of the residents in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital,
hon Afolabi Afuape, the Member of the House of Representatives representing Abeokuta-South federal constituency, Afolabi Afuape in collaboration with the National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC), has organised a two-day free medical outreach.

The event, started on Monday and ended Tuesday, held at Centenary Hall, Ake, and Panseke areas of Abeokuta respectively.

Hon Afuape through the outreach provided essential medical services to old and young residents, particularly targeting those from the grassroots who often lack access to adequate healthcare.

Speaking during the outreach, Hon. Afuape emphasised that the initiative was born out of a need to restore hope in the government, especially during the current economic realities.

He noted that the current economic hardships have made it difficult for many to afford basic healthcare, making the outreach programme timely and crucial.

“The people should continue to have hope in the government,” Afuape remarked.

“Things are tough at the moment, we all know that even ordinary malaria could kill, and that is one of the reasons why this programme is brought to the people. Those in need of medical assistance can find some relief through this programme.”


The lawmaker revealed that the turnout for the outreach had exceeded expectations, with over 2,000 residents benefitting from the free medical services as of the time of the report.

He expressed optimism that the number could reach 3,000 by the end of the programme on Tuesday.

“We started yesterday (Monday), it’s a two-day programme, and today is the final day. Between yesterday and now, we’ve recorded about 2,000 people, and we’re still here, so we’re likely to cross about 3,000,” Afuape stated.

The medical director of the Medical outreach , Dr. Femi Ajetunmobi who partnered the organisers, stressed the importance of the initiative in reaching out to those who may not have the financial means to access healthcare services.

He highlighted the need for continued partnerships between the government and organisations to sustain such impactful programmes.


“This is a programme to reach out to the people, especially those at the grassroots who need medical attention,” Dr. Ajetunmobi said.

“The initiative ensures that those who cannot afford to visit healthcare facilities have access to medical care.”


Beneficiaries of the outreach were full of praise for the organisers. Peter Oluwakemi, a civil servant, lauded the programme, noting that it fulfilled its promises and provided much-needed healthcare services to the community.

“We’re here because we heard that Honourable Afolabi Afuape is giving back to the society through this medical outreach,” Oluwakemi said.

“We came to see for ourselves, and indeed, everything he promised is happening right here.”

Another beneficiary, Abdul Rasak Adeloju, an artisan, commended the efforts of the organisers and urged other politicians to emulate such acts of giving back to the public.


The medical outreach, which concluded on Tuesday, has been hailed as a significant step towards improving public health in Abeokuta, especially for the underprivileged who are often left behind in the healthcare system.

Residents of Olorungbo Community of Ago — Ika in Abeokuta North had hailed Hon. Sanni Sulaimon for his timely intervention support by providing them with one horsepower pumping machine worth over #250,000 to address the water problem in Olorungbo community.

The representative applauded Hon. Sanni Sulaimon for his quick intervention within a short time and his philanthropist gesture has affected positively people’s life tremendously.

Saying, the involvement of Hon. Sanni Sulaimon has increased the number of community benefited from distribution of pumping machine to community in Abeokuta North as part of his programs to ease the water scarcity.

He disclosed that during the dry season, the community suffered a lot to get water but with this gesture received from Hon. Sanni Sulaimon will forever remember for.

Hon. Yakubu Odebode who made the presentation of the pumping machine, expressed the need for the provision of additional one to Olorungbo residents.

Adding that this is not the first time Hon. Sanni Sulaimon has supported Communities with boreholes and solar lights system, and expansion of electricity supply to contribute immensely to the constant availability of water at all times.

The residents emphasized the need for people in Abeokuta North to Support Hon. Sanni Sulaimon (HSS) as Chairman in the council area to take the bull by the horns in uplifting Our LGA to mecca of sorts.

The Adeola Odutola College Old Student Association, AOCOSA 79-84 Set has elected new set of Executives that will run the affairs of the association for another two years 2024-2026.

Announcing the result of the keenly contested on-line election, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr. Abdur- Rahman Balogun, declared Mr. Alade Harrison Onabanjo as the newly elected President for the Set having been unanimously elected with 100 per cent of the votes cast.

Other elected officers are Mr. Abdulazeez Olawale Balogun for the post of the Vice President with 91.1 per cent of the total votes cast.

For the post of the Secretary, Mr
Moshood Bajo got elected with 77. 1 per cent of the votes cast while the Assistant Secretary, Mrs. Ramotalai Aribike Oseni got 58.6 per cent .

For the post of the Treasurer, Ms Adetutu Ogunba was also elected with 50 per cent of the vote cast while the Financial Secretary went to Mrs Funmilayo Akeeb who got elected with the total of 96.7 per cent of the votes cast.

Others were Ms Idowu Alice Aiyenuro who was elected as the Welfare/ Social Officer with the total votes of 61.8 per cent while Ms Titilayo Kuburat Abass got elected as the P.R.O with the total of 98.8 per cent votes cast.

Other elected officers include Barrister Aderinsayo Adewunmi as the Legal Advisor with 100 per cent of the votes cast while Bishop Olalekan Wasiu elected as the Auditor with 96.9 per cent votes and Mr. Shakiru Abiodun Balogun elected as the new Ex- Officio with 100 per cent votes cast.

In his acceptance Speech, the new elected President of the Set, Mr Alade Onabanjo promised that the new executive will run all- inclusive participation in which no one is superior to others.

" Let's join hands to make the set role model among other sets", he said.

Onabanjo also promised to serve with high sense of responsibility, loyalty and integrity in running the affairs of the association.

The Set recently celebrated its 40 years anniversary with donation of solar street lights worth millions of Naira to the 79 year old College.

The Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle, Tricycle Repairers and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), have supported the 4th edition of ValueJet/SWAN Security cup final with trophy and medals.

The ACOMORAN Chairman in Ogun State, Chief Kayode Sowunmi and the RTEAN Secretary, Comrade Tiwalade Akingbade announced the donation in Abeokuta while receiving the Executive members of SWAN, led by its chairman, Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji.

The duo while congratulating the Association for the success of the 4th edition of the competition which ends on Monday 26th August 2024, reminded the need to sustain the competition towards cementing the already established relationship among various security agencies in the state.

The Ogun State Government says its giant strides in various sectors of the economy are geared towards putting in place a legacy which would make the State the envy of others in Nigeria.

This was disclosed by the Deputy Governor, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele when she played host to a delegation of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) led by its National President, Prof. Pius Olanrewaju, in her office in Oke-Mosan in company of Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Adebola Sofela, a Fellow Chartered Institute of Bankers.

Mrs Salako-Oyedele said that the Prince Dapo Abiodun led government has in the last five years put in place policies that have made Ogun the investors preferred destination of choice.

She said that the springing up of new companies and industries in different parts of the State is a testament that the policies are working and had significantly improved the. livelihood of her citizens

The Deputy Governor also underscored the achievements of the present administration in the agricultural sector with the recent flag-off of harvest on 200 hectares rice farm land near the flood plane of Ogun river in Magboro area and other interventions in the agricultural sector to improve food production and security .

"His Excellency is working on expanding the programme to about 2000 hectares and we are going to bring in more young people into the agribusiness value chain. We will train and support them to start their agribusiness.

"This is one of the areas where we need the support of Bankers and the banking industry particularly for the Small holder farmers that are considered to be high risk . Access to finance is very important for their growth and survival .They are the backbone of the economy because they employ thousands of people, improve food security and standard of living " she said.

Admonishing the bankers to increase their penetration in the rural areas to reduce rural-urban migration, Engr. Salako-Oyedele said that lack of access to financial services can discourage rural dwellers, thereby compelling them to abandon their agricultural activities.

Earlier, the President of CIBN, Professor Olanrewaju who made Ogun his first port of call since his investiture, lauded the present administration for its sterling performance ,saying its efforts in rapid industrialization and infrastructural development in the State are the foundations for continuous growth and prosperity.

According to him, the airport being built by the government in Remo industrial cluster of the State is a legacy project and a commendable one.

" I want to give credit to this administration for what they are doing. I saw companies springing up at Ogere, Sagamu-Abeokuta road. An airport is also being built. It is not just an airport, it is an aeropolis with agricultural processing zone and a logistic hub.It is a preparation for the future," Olanrewaju said.

In a significant move towards revitalizing sports at the grassroots level, the Ogun State Government has promised continuous resuscitation of the Ogun State Sports Festival.

The Commissioner for Sports Development in the state, Hon.Wasiu Isiaka, disclosed this on Saturday at the closing ceremony of the 2024 edition of Ogun State Sports Festival, held at the Sagamu International Stadium.

The Commissioner emphasized the government's dedication to elevating Ogun State position in Nigeria's sports landscape.

He highlighted the importance of harnessing the potential of the youth and channeling their energy into productive ventures for their personal success and the socio-economic advancement of the state.

According to him, the initiative aligns with the promises made by the government and responds to calls from stakeholders, including the Association of Retired Heads of Service and Permanent Secretaries (ARHSPS) Ogun State and other stakeholders.

He said the ARHSPS had previously advocated for the revival of the sports festival in their publication, "Perspectives on Moving Ogun State Forward," presented to the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun in 2019.

The Commissioner announced that the resuscitated festival would serve as a platform to discover new talents across all local government areas, providing an opportunity for these talents to join the core of established athletes.

He noted that the initiative aims to prepare a pool of athletes for major national competitions, such as the National Sports Festival, moving away from the practice of recruiting athletes from other states.

He added that, in addition to the sports festival, the government plans to create a more comprehensive event co-hosted by the Ministry of Sports Development and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

He stressed that the event, tentatively named Gateway Unity Day, will be held annually on February 3, commemorating the creation of Ogun State in 1976.

The event will feature a sporting fiesta, cultural displays, and a celebration of the state's creation, fostering unity and teamwork among communities.

The Commissioner also noted that the Governor is diligently working on the modalities to ensure the festival brings together the state's greatest talents, inspires the next generation of athletes, and promotes Ogun State's rich cultural heritage.

"The festival is expected to leverage corporate sponsorships to make it a joint project.

"The new talents discovered will join the core of our athletes that have already been established.This process will accord our state the opportunity of having a pool of athletes that could be groomed and nurtured for major national competitions such as the National Sports Festival. The idea of recruiting ready-made athletes from other states should be jettisoned.

"The Ogun State Sports Festival, first held in 1977, saw its last edition in 1981. The upcoming editions would be more than just a competition; it is an opportunity to showcase Ogun State's talent, potential, and hospitality to the world.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the upcoming National Sports Festival will be more than just a competition to us. It is an opportunity for us to present Ogun State to the world. It is our moment to shine to show the nation what we are capable of achieving greatness as a state rich in talent, potentials and hospitality.

"Let us all come together and collaborate effectively to present a sports festival unlike we have never seen in the history of our great country. Together, we can highlight the spirit of Ogun State, celebrating not only our athletes but also the cultural essence that binds us together.

On our part as Government, we are determined to host and organize a befitting and very successful National Sports Festival.

"It is pertinent to inform you that aside from hosting, your darling State, Ogun State, will equally participate in the competition. On this as well, we shall present outstanding talented athletes and formidable teams that will not just represent Ogun State but will compete, perform creditably, and win laurels for the state.

"May I, therefore, call on our athletes; those that will be discovered here and the ones that are at various ongoing competitions to see this and the upcoming NSF as an avenue to display their God-given talent.

"The State Governor, as usual, has promised to reward outstanding performance. 2024 Edition of Ogun State Sports festival featured different sporting activities, including football, athletics, scrabble, chess, Ayo Olopon, deaf and Para Athletics.

In the football event, Ijebu division defeated Remo 5-4 on penalty shootouts to be crowned champion, while Egba thrashed Yewa division 3-nil in the 3rd place final.

Plans have been concluded to stage the 6th edition of the 2024 National Under 18-Boys Football Competition tagged: 'MKO Abiola Cup'.

The competition being organized by the Ogun State chapter of Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria, YSFON, will attract participants across the Six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

The Chairman of the group in the state, Alhaji Waheed Lawal told Journalists in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, that the tournament would kick off on Saturday 31st of August, 2024.

Alhaji Lawal, who revealed that the competition had suffered a set back due to lack of funds and sponsorship in the past, explained that arrangements had been concluded to stage the 6th edition of the tournament.

He said competition was to honour the first Pillar of Sports in Africa, late Chief M.K.O Abiola for his contributions to the growth and development of sports in Nigeria and outside the shores of the country.

Alhaji Lawal said the competition will kick start at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode and end up at MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta.

Alhaji Lawal who expressed confidence that the MKO Abiola Under-18 Cup had come to stay as an annual event, disclosed that plans were on to ensure that the Ogun State government adopt the competition.


He further appreciated the effort of the state and other key stakeholders in their efforts to ensure that the competition achieved the desired goals.

The trial to select athletes that will represent the state at the forthcoming National Youth games in Delta State organised by Ogun State Wrestling Association has been held at the indoor hall of Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja, Abeokuta.

The event had the chairman, Ogun Wrestling Association, Dr Abimbola Babalola, past chairmen of the association and coaches in attendance.

Speaking with Radio Nigeria, the Wrestling Head Coach, Mr Badmus Adebayo explained that the trial became necessary to select the best wrestlers that would compete with the rest of the states in Asaba in September.

Coach Adebayo who expressed the readiness of the wrestlers to bring medals for Ogun State in various categories when the festival gets underway, solicited the continued support of stakeholders in addressing the challenges affecting the wrestlers in the state.

He listed the priority areas to include provision of standards mats, singlets and wrestling boots as well as financial support for the athletes to further serve as morale booster for the wrestlers.

Mr Adebayo commended the efforts of the Chairman, Ogun State Wrestling Association Dr Abimbola Babalola and other members of the association towards the development of the sports in the state.

Responding, the Chairman, Dr Abimbola Babalola expressed satisfaction with the performance of the wrestlers during the trial.

Dr Babalola gave the assurance that the association would continue to support the wrestlers with the resources available to enable to achieve success in the festival.

He encouraged the wrestlers that would be selected for the festival to be ambassador of the state in Delta State.

Over one hundred wrestlers drawn from the three Senatorial Districts of Ogun State participated in the trial.

Hon Sulaiman who is also a Chairmanship aspirant for Abeokuta North Local government under the All Progressives Congress, APC, made the call during a visit to Soilless Farm Lab located at Awowo in Ewekoro Local government area of Ogun State.

He noted that part of his plan was to ensure youth are more productive in Agriculture as a mean of livelihood to reduce the hardship and to create food supplement for the masses.

Hon. Sanni Sulaimon made these intentions known to the HR of the company Mr. Paul who representing the Chief Executive Officer and the brain behind the soilless farm Lab concept that his NGOs wanted to engage more of youth through youth engagement in different capacity, with agriculture being the first phase of the plans.

He reaffirmed the readiness of his NGOs to collaborate with soilless farm Lab in training of more youths who are willing to venture into farming.

Hon. Sanni requested for more slot for the youth, adding that Sanni Sulaimon Charity Organization will sponsor their tuition fee and weekly allowance for each candidate to complement the registration requirements with their admissions ratio of 70 percent female and 30 percent male.

The sum of one hundred million naira has been presented to 86 retirees of Ilushin Estate Limited in Ogun Waterside Local Government area of the State as their retirement benefits.

Presenting the cheques at the rubber plantation, Ilushin, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Bolu Owootomo, said the payment marked a new chapter in the Estate's journey towards sustainable growth and development.

Hon. Owootomo, who doubles as the chairman of the company, noted that the company had planted 157 hectares of rubber out of the 240 hectares proposed for the year, while targeting between 450 and 500 hectares next year, adding that it was a major boost to agriculture and a significant step towards revitalising the production of rubber in the state, as government efforts at revitalising moribund companies were beginning to yield positive results.

He explained that company which had undergone restructuring, cleared all outstanding debts to banks, members of staff, customers and suppliers, as part of effort to reposition it for enhanced productivity.

He noted that the VTA would generate employment for the youths and promote haulage revenue for government.

The Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria(FRCN) populary tagged ‘Radio Nigeria’ is Nigeria owned and publicly funded radio broadcasting organization.

It was founded in 1933 by the British colonial government and branded Radio Diffusion Service (RDS) with the mandate to allow the public hear and enjoy British Broadcasting Corporation(BBC) foreign radio service broadcast.

In 1950, RDS was rebranded Nigerian Broadcasting services and it was restructured into Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) in April 1st, 1957 by an act of parliament as public service.
Initially, NBS was only in Lagos, Kaduna, Enugu, Ibadan, kano as recommended by the the Nigeria Broadcasting Survey commissioned by the then colonial government and undertaken by Messrs Byron and Turner. It was later extended to other parts of the country such as Zaria, sokoto, Ilorin, Onitsha, port Harcourt, Abeokuta, ijebu ode to mention a few. Mr. T.W. Chalmers, a Briton and Controller of the BBC Light Entertainment Programme was the first Director-General of the NBS.
The NBC and the Broadcasting Corporation of Northern Nigeria (BCNN) were merged into the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria(FRCN) in 1978. The Reverend Victor Badejo was the first indigenous Director-General of Radio Nigeria.

Also, the corporation has a training school in Ikeja, Lagos State known as Nigeria Broadcasting Academy (NBA Lagos)

Yet, training of staffers is luxury in the Corporation except for the very senior staff.
There are staffs of 5, 7, 10 years in the corporation that has never being on any training since they joined the corporation (not even to the corporation training school).

It is difficult to compare the corporation in terms of equipment, spare part, training, staff welfare and so on with radio stations such as BBC. Many indigenous states and private stations as well are better off.
However today, the focus is going to be on staff welfare and remuneration.
I am interested in the corporation, I have someone in the corporations a very senior officer for that matter a senior officer but the lifestyle is nothing to write home about. It pains me that such an upright and intelligent senior officer with over 25 years working experience is still wallowing in so much better and poverty. He is always indebted and repaying loan.
The okada riders, bricklayers and others living around him are even better off. No wonder, Nigerian youth of today are no longer passionate about education.

It is a well known fact that the Nigeria Civil Service is about the most poorly paid globally with little or no welfare and training package for the staffers except for a few parastatals, agencies and ministries.
The condition is even worse in FRCN who always provide platforms for other to be heard and project the poor welfare packages yet, they are the worst victims and one of the worst paid ministry in Nigeria.
Here, the salary of a graduate (level 8 officer) is about sixty thousand naira (68,000). A level 12 officer in the corporation earns about a #112,000

This implies that a graduate that joined the corporation on level 8 and has risen to level 12 after spending about 10 years in the corporation if the promotion is regular and is now probably with wife and kids will only experience an increment of about 45,000. (After ten years) while some get this or even more in just a single promotion.
These are great men and women who have sacrificed the larger part of their lives in spite of the poor condition of service to ensure the corporation stay afloat and remain a force to reckon with.
In FRCN, there is no provision for staffs to cushion the effect of RF (Radio Frequency wave) in terms of allowance, kits or provisions.

Staffs even spend from their individual pocket to keep the largest radio network in Africa going. This is how passionate people are about their jobs.
In FRCN, leave allowance, thirteenth month allowance to mention a few are history. There are no incentives or motivation for the workers to look forward to except the monthly stipend.
How can you expect the best from your staffers when they are not going for training and are only paid to live from hand to mouth.
There was a time the corporation in alliance with other media outfit under the auspices of RATTAWU, NUJ and SSASGOC were clamouring for Media Salary Scale (MSS) which the late minister for information help push after seeing the ridiculously poor remuneration of media workers in the person of late Prof. Dora Nkem Akunyili (OFR) who was born in Markurdi, Benue State and died on June 7, 2014 after a long battle with cancer. May her blessed soul rest in peace.

*Even in the beyond, her good works continue to speak.*

Sadly, the agitation for media salary scale died naturally and the plight of media workers persisted.
The condition of service is even worse in FRCN compared to its sister broadcast outfits such as Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) and Voice of Nigeria (VON) and others

Anytime the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) is about to commence strike and the Resident Doctors they are swiftly given attention and you dare not hear establishment like CBN, BOI, NIMASA, NDIC, NNPC, FIRS just but few to mention are on strike yet, we are all Federal workers, with same or even better certificate than them and even harzadous working environment and conditions than most of them.

THE PUZZLE HERE IS WHY THE GOVERNMENT MUST SIT AND RELAX TILL UNION PROCEED ON STRIKE BEFORE DOING THE NEEDFUL.

FRCN is the voice of the government to the Nigerian public and the voice of the public to the government as well, both governmwnt and public get their feedback via our platform yet we are treated in such a manner we are being treated today. The station bring to the public domain achievements, successes, abuses, activities, oppression, and other vices of the government, individuals, security outfit, corporate organisation to the public domain for commendation, checks and balances by appropriate authority.

WHO IS GOING TO RISE UP AND SPEAK FOR FRCN?

Our case can be likened to that of a hairdresser that cannot plait or weave her own hair!

Now that labour and the federal government are talking about reviewing minimum wage be it through wholistic or selective increment, this is another window of opportunity for the government to better the lot of media workers in the country either by revisiting the media salary scale or upgrading the media salary to a living wage.
Even the unskilled and uneducated workers in the country working as labourers earn about two to three thousand daily making about this ₦68, 000 thousand naira we are talking about today
even unskilled workers earn more.

We kindly appeal to President Tinubu Bola, President and Commander in Chief of the federal republic of Nigeria, Ministry of Labour, the acting honourable minister of labour and Productivity, Head Of the Civil Service of the Federation, President Nigeria Labour Congress, the honourable minister of information and all concerned to help my so that in the upcoming salary increment, media workers like frcn, nta and other are given priority.

Most frcn staff are wallowing in debt and poverty except for the few that are from privileged background or doing something else. Hardly can you see a staff of frcn that can stand shoulder high before their counterparts in other parastatals like corporate affairs commission, industrial training fund (ITF), federal inland revenue, Nigeria civil defence, Central Bank of Nigeria (cbn), EFCC to mention a few.

A radio station belonging to the federal government should be a model and a source of pride both locally and abroad.
The staffers are doing their best to uplift the nation and unite the Nigerian public but the government is doing is not doing enough in uplifting the morale and welfare packages of the staffers.
This has to change now.
Thank God we are in the era of change.

Ogun State government has sought the assistance of the German Agency for International Cooperation, GIZ, to engage youths in the state in demand-driven needs like Artificial Intelligence skills, to make them better prepared for employment opportunities that were obtainable locally and internationally.

The state Deputy Governor, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele, made the call when she received members of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the maiden Ogun State Employment Conference, led by its Chairman and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Olu. Ola. Aikulola, in company of Permanent Secretary, Public Service Transformation Office (PSTO), Mr. Jola Oyeneye, Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Development, Mr. Abiola Odetola, representative of the GIZ, and other committee members in her Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The LOC members were at the Deputy Governor’s Office to present the report of the Ogun State Employment Conference, held between October 11 and 12, 2023, as well as create awareness on the proposed hybrid Job Fair programme.

Mrs Salako-Oyedele said youths should be empowered with relevant and marketable skills that would help them take advantage of new technology, urging GIZ to ensure effective marketing of its Skills Development for Youth Employment Project and a ‘’Train the Trainers’’ programme, to enable many youths to benefit.

“I am pleased to hear that the GIZ intervention has been extended till November, 2026. I believe the extension will afford more youths across the State to benefit more from your impactful intervention’’, she said.

Mrs Salako-Oyedele, who commended efforts of LOC for the report, noted that the event had impacted lives of youths, promising to work with the committee and the GIZ subsequently.

Earlier, Dr. Olu. Ola. Aikulola, had said report of the committee was forwarded for government to implement its recommendation, adding that the proposed Job Fair would be an inclusive Fair which would be technologically-driven, and help build on the gains of last year’s conference.

Also speaking, Technical Advisor, Employment Promotion, Skills Development for Youth Employment, GIZ, Mr. Amile Terlumun, said the Employment conference provided insights which were used to plan the next phase of the Skills Development for Youth Employment programme which would run until November, 2026.

He called on government to implement the recommendations, adding that they align with the drive of the State government towards empowering youths with requisite skills.

Meanwhile, the LOC also met with the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu and the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mr. Olaolu Olabimtan, to present the report and advocate support for the upcoming Job Fair.

In a democratic society, protest is a fundamental right of citizens. While peaceful assembly and free speech are essential democratic principles, protest is a constitutional right enshrined in Section 40, of the Nigerian Constitution.

It's a peaceful way for people to express their grievances, hold leaders accountable, and advocate for change, thus the Nigerian youths have the right to embark on a 'EndBadGovernance' protest in August, to demand improved governance and leadership.

However, as Nigerian youths prepare to take to the streets on August 1 to 10, it's crucial for them to know that protest is not a license to criminality or violence. Government and concerned authorities must respect and protect protesters' rights, not suppress them.

One cannot shy away from the present realities, as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu navigates the complexities of leading Africa's most populous nation. He must prioritize addressing the escalating hunger crisis threatening to engulf the country.

The stark reality is that Nigeria is on the brink of a catastrophic hunger crisis, and it is imperative that the President takes immediate action to mitigate this looming disaster.

The situation is dire. Hunger, starvation, and abject poverty have become the harsh realities for many Nigerians. The lack of jobs, skyrocketing fuel prices (from N192 per liter to N550-N800), and general economic hardship have created a perfect storm of discontent. The nation is teetering on the edge, and it's crucial that President Tinubu takes bold steps to address these pressing issues, without paying lips services.

As the leader of Nigeria, President Tinubu has a responsibility to protect the country's image and ensure the well-being of its citizens. The international community is watching, and it is essential that Nigeria avoids the embarrassment of widespread hunger protests.

Mr. President, the time for action is now. We urge you to implement policies to reduce fuel prices and make transportation more affordable, invest in job creation initiatives and support small businesses, increase funding for social welfare programs to support vulnerable populations and channel it through credible means instead of using the political class, improve electricity supply, boost the Nation's productions capacity, engage in open dialogue with stakeholders to address the root causes of the hunger crisis among other needs.

In times of troubles, great leaders rise to the challenge. President Tinubu, Nigeria needs your decisive leadership to avert this looming crisis. The nation's future depends on it.

While there has been various means to appeal to protesters, the government or law enforcement agencies should not in any way try to suppress them. Suppressing protesters can lead to escalation of violence. Aggressive tactics can provoke protesters, leading to more intense clashes and potentially deadly consequences. Suppressing protests can galvanize more people to join the movement, spreading unrest and instability while the global community may criticize the government's actions, damaging its reputation and potentially leading to sanctions. Suppressing protests can result in human rights abuses, including arbitrary arrests, torture, and extrajudicial killings and this can erode trust in the government, leading to increased mistrust and resentment among citizens. Heavy-handed tactics can drive protesters underground, potentially leading to radicalization and more extreme actions, this can have unforeseen effects, such as harming innocent bystanders or damaging infrastructure. As we all know, prolonged unrest and instability can harm the economy, deterring investment and tourism.

Instead, the government should engage with protesters, address their grievances, and work towards finding peaceful solutions. The government should allow the protest to take place, ensuring freedom of assembly and expression.

To ensure a peaceful protest, the Nigerian government and law enforcement agencies should establish communication channels to understand their grievances and demands, deploy police and other security agencies to maintain order, protect protesters, and prevent violence. Employ de-escalation techniques, such as dialogue and mediation, to resolve conflicts and refrain from using tear gas, rubber bullets, or live ammunition, which can escalate the situation. Any responsible government should ensure protesters' rights are respected, including freedom of speech, assembly, and movement, while taking concrete steps to address the protesters' demands and concerns. Government must keep the public informed about the protest and any developments and work with NGOs, community leaders, and other stakeholders to promote peace and understanding.

By taking these steps, the Nigerian government and law enforcement agencies can help ensure a peaceful and successful protest, allowing citizens to exercise their democratic rights without fear of violence or repression.

No doubt, by exercising their right to protest in the 10 days of rage, Nigerian youths are demonstrating their commitment to a better future. Let's hope their voices are heard and their demands for good governance are met.

The Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria, MUSWEN, has appealed to those planning a nationwide protest across the Federation to shelve the idea and embrace dialogue, peaceful and amicable resolution of all the issues at stake.

MUSWEN President, Alhaji Rasaki Oladejo in a statement identifies mutual consultation, dialogue and peaceful resolution as key components in resolving any national issue in line with Islamic dictates as contains in the Holy Qur'an.

MUSWEN implores those behind the proposed national protest over the current economic hardship in the country to realise that such action may be hijacked by some unpatriotic elements thus making it violent and destructive.

It must be pointed out here that no matter how peaceful a protest might be in Nigeria, hoodlums and miscreants usually participate in it – thus turning the whole exercise into uncontrollable and destructive crises.

It is important to stress here that organising any public protest now in the country will only worsen already bad situation which the protest wanted to correct and may also lead to destruction of lives and properties.

In as much as MUSWEN believes in the fact that individuals and groups have freedom to protest, such act must follow its decorum and that the situation in the country now does not call for such.

MUSWEN therefore call on those aggrieved and have better ideas on how to move the nation forward to be patriotic enough to share such noble ideas with those in the helms of affairs and give them more time to implement such.

The Muslim Ummah also counsel the government of the day to listen to yearnings of the public and put the machinery in motion to address all their concerns as soon as practicable.

We pray for the peace, unity and prosperity of the country while calling on government to expedite action in cushioning the effects of the policies on the citizenry.

No fewer than seven security agencies will feature in this year's edition of ValueJet/SWAN Security Cup organized by the Ogun state chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).

The SWAN Security Cup is a football competition organized to foster unity among all security agencies in Ogun state since 2021.

The defending champions, Police Machine were drawn in Group A, to play against the tough side, Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun State Fire Service and debutants, Federal Road Safety Corps.

In Group B of the competition, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), last year's finalists, NSCDC and debutants, Economic and Financial Crime Commissions (EFCC) in preliminary round of matches beginning from Thursday August 1, 2024.

Speaking at the draws ceremony held on Friday at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, the Ogun State SWAN Chairman, Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji said the competition was put together to strengthen unity and friendship among the security outfits.

While appreciating ValueJet Airline as title sponsor of the fourth edition of the annual football competition, he appealed to corporate organizations and other philanthropists to emulate the airline company by giving more support to make the tournament bigger.

The Head of Marketing, ValueJet Nigeria, Uchechi Achomadu said the airline firm as a leading brand in Nigeria's aviation industry with regular flights to five states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja was proud to be the official sponsor of competition.

She later announced a cash prize of one million naira for the eventual winners.

Uchechi added that there are branded jerseys for four teams in the semi-final stage of the competition, assuring the teams of commitment of ValueJet Airline as a brand to the success of the competition.

Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Sports Development, Mr. Lanre Ogunyinka assured SWAN of Ogun state government's committment to the development of sports in the state.

Ogunyinka pledged that top coaches from the State Sports Council would be part of the competition to spot talents that would be nurtured to represent the State in major competitions.

He added that the hosting of the forthcoming National Sports Festival in the state, further demonstrate government's readiness to improve the existing facilities at various stadia across the state and organize the best ever in the history of the game.

He called for continuous support of SWAN towards the successful media coverage of the biggest sporting event in the country come January 2025.

Also General Manager of Gateway United Football, Mr. Niyi Soleye lauded SWAN leadership for sustenance of the competition in the previous three editions.

...Calls for more professionals at the helm of affairs


The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun state council has commended a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abeokuta North, Hon Akeem Oluseye for his move to bring his professional ideas into politics at the grassroot level.

The Council made the commendation during a courtesy visit by Oluseye to the Council's Secretariat, Iwe Iroyin, Abeokuta, on Friday.

The council team led by the chairman, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju expressed his delight to Oluseye, saying if young professionals with track record of leadership takes the position of leadership, the society will take a different shape.

Comrade Olanrewaju stressed that the state would have been better if professionals with good leadership have been in the local government council in the past.

He appreciated Oluseye for the visit, mentioning that such visit was the first from any grassroot politician, promising to give necessary support as the local government political activities start.

In a remark, Hon Oluseye emphasized the importance of media in grassroot development, promising to get the media involved on his political journey very soon.

He also called on youth participation in politics, the only way to change the narrative in our society.

The Founder, Irede Foundation, a non-profit Organization, Hon. Hammed Adeniyi Adebolu has reiterated his desire and commitment towards the development of sports at the grassroots level.

Hon. Adebolu stated this when he received executive members of the State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) at his Oke Ilewo Office, Abeokuta.

Otherwise known as Sekere of Lagos, the Irede Foundation founder who acknowledged the importance of Sports to the social economic development of any nation especially in the area of job creation for the youths in the society, promised to partner with the association in the state to promote grassroots sports.

While appreciating the association for its various laudable programmes geared towards complementing efforts of the state government to develop sports in the state, Hon. Adebolu appealed to the executive members of the association to sustain the tempo, adding that the development of sports required concerted efforts of all.

Hon Adebolu promised to support the association to ensure the success of the forthcoming Valuejet SWAN Security cup competition slated for between First and 15th August, 2024.


"I want to sincerely appreciate your determination and zeal to ensure that sports in the state receive adequate attention through your reportage and various programmes, I will continue to do my best as a Youth to promote sports which over the years have remained a veritable weapon to reduce all forms of social vices in the society".

Earlier, the Ogun State SWAN chairman, Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, commended Hon. Adebolu for his philanthropic gesture towards empowering the youths.

Ogunsiji noted that his desire to invest in sports would eradicate social vices among the youths in the state.

The SWAN Chairman reaffirmed the readiness of the association in partnering the Ogun State government in the discovery of young and vibrant athletes that would replace the ageing ones.

Notable media organisations in Ogun State have affirmed their readiness to partner Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, in the coverage of forthcoming Valuejet SWAN Security cup competition slated for between 1st and 15th August, 2024.

The heads of the Media Stations gave the assurance while receiving the executive members of the state chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria SWAN led by its chairman Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji in Abeokuta.

Receiving the team at the Ajebo office of Ogun State Television, OGTV, the General Manager of the station, Mr Tunde Kassim promised to give the association the needed support especially in the publicity and adequate coverage of the competition tagged " Valuejet SWAN Security cup'

Mr Kassim who lauded the executive members for their various programmes and activities geared towards making the association viable said efforts should be intensified in the capacity building of their members.

He said there was the need for the executives to be on top of their game as the state prepare for the hosting of the national sports festival.

Addressing the delegation of SWAN at Ogbe office of the Nigeria Television Authority, NTA, Abeokuta, Mr Kehinde Onada also restated the resolve of the station to partner the association towards the success of the forthcoming competition.

Mr Onada who appreciated SWAN for finding the station of being worthy of the award also advised the executive members to diversify in its activities to give room for more participation.

Also, the CEO NSTV Lagos, Mr Lanre Adegboyega, said the station remained commitment to the promotion of all SWAN activities in the state.

The NSTV boss assured the organizers of streaming live all matches of the competition to members of the public.

Earlier, SWAN chairman, Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji had explained that the visit to the media stations was borne out of the need to appreciate them for their support in the coverage of the association's activities since inception.

Comrade Ogunsiji who announced that plans were on to continue to improve on the capacity building and welfare of members of the association said wider coverage of the forthcoming Valuejet SWAN Security cup competition was essential to sustain the relationship with the sponsor of the tournament.

Highpoint of the visit was the presentation of awards of pillar of support to the station.

An appeal has gone to Governor, Dapo Abiodun to help in restoring the lost hopes of traders whose shops were affected by the inferno that gutted Oba Lipede Ultra modern market with cash and donations also to establish a sub fire station in the Locality.

This appeal was made by the Baale of Kuto in Council and Chiefs led by high Chief Mufutau Kehinde the Baale kuto, whom doubles as Jaguna of Ijemo Land, during a sympathy visit of Council of Baale and Chief's in Kuto, saying they sympathised with the victims as economic situation was harsh. He said the council would continue to plead with Governor Dapo Abiodun to extend his hand of fatherly love and kindness to the victims of the fire outbreak.

His words " on behalf of the good people of kuto and the entire Kuto Baale in Council Chiefs we appreciated our able governor Prince Dapo Abiodun on his visit to our market that got burnt despite his tight scheduled, but we still want the Governor to help us in assisting all the affected traders of this inferno because time are hard and we don't want them to join the league of people living with depression as they loss goods and property running to hundreds of million naira also want governor to FasTrack the process of re - construction of the affected part of the building with the provision of mini fire service Station to prevent such an occurrence in future "


He appreciated the governor for stopping the Abeokuta South Local Government Authority from demolition shops at the open market where over 20,000 people are making their daily bread , adding that apart from fire station , Kuto community has developed with higher population and lack many basic amenities, like good network roads, transformers for electricity supply and pipe borne water as people could not easily sink borehole due to the rocky area.


The Iyalode of Kuto Land , Chief (Mrs.) Muyibatu Salau , urged Prince Dapo Abiodun and other government at all levels to rally round and support all the victims of the inferno as some of them are small scale traders trading on credits from the factory while majority are widows catering for their family members from the little business sales at Lipede market.

She enumerated that, over 50 people were the victims of the inferno, appealing to the state government to look into their situation and compensate them so as reduce rate of unemployment among others, adding that Kuto need a standing sub fire station as one of the millennium market in the state, to prevent such an occurrence in future.


The Baba Laje of kuto Land , high Chief Adesoji Olumide , sympathised with the traders and prayed that God Almighty would console them and appealing to the state governor on behalf of all the traders at the Kuto market, that government should help them. He listed other areas they require Government intervention to include: provision of pipe borne water, transformers and Mini fire Service Station among others would made the entire Kuto and it's axis a competitive commercial centre
