okay now that we seem to have gotten over that . . . ehen for edo, see the love story when dey develope, I just thot I'd share it over here as well seeing that the romance between the governed and the leaders took on some intoxicating fervour just yesterday. Na as we see am for Benin be dis: The decision of the election tribunal in Edo state that gave a ruling to the effect that Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the candidate of the Action Congress in the April 14 2007 Edo gubernatorial election, be returned as the elected governor elicited general acclaim by most within the city. There was spontaneous celebrations in different parts and many such events in most other parts of the state as the judgement was greeted with joy. Previously, there was an apprehensive calm within the city centre as most were wary of any untoward incident(s) , however, the security was such that would instil reason to any miscreant. Elsewhere in the city, the majority of the populace expressed reservations about the ultimate outcome of a ruling that spanned hours, this was not surprising as many of the citizens were witnessing a live ruling for the first time. At least most got a tutelage on the runnings of the judiciary. The long wait however turned out to be worthwhile as the chairman of the tribunal finally gave a definitive ruling, and in most parts of the city, the hurrahs and backslappings gave an insight as to how a people appreciated their choices as leaders. This approach however might just turn out to be shortlived, as it is expected of the incumbent governor, former senator and Proffessor Osariemen Osunbor to file an appeal, his continued stay as the governor might be finally dependent on that final ruling. Coming amidst a spate of earlier tribunal rulings, the professor might not be too perturbed as he probably might have well known that the tables might turn to his disfavour. Riding on the crest of the 'Baba' PDP, he laid claim to a mandate most of his constituents claim was not given to him. The professor however has quickly learned the art of statecraft and despite the many odds that may seem to assail him in his less than twelve months term in office, he has consistently weathered the storm and has in a sort of way warmed himself into the hearts of liberal citizens. A few projects that are observed as one goes around the city especially and in other parts of the state has somewhat won him some sympathy. The angle of the godfathers is thus played out in his favour by the ruling of the tribunal chairman as hitherto expected by liberal minded folk. It was assumed that the battle for the soul of the PDP at the national level has been replicated in the state. Try as they might, the power play amongst the assumed heavyweights brazenly reared it's head in the recent state convention where parrallel conventions were held with the governor as the leader of the nationally recognised convention. The twist to the tale is that moves had been explored to ensure that the governor was not to be the party flag bearer in the event of a re election, however, the tribunal chairman had done the dirty work for the governor and has streamlined his next mission, "Appeal or bust" . Now, Osunbor knows that his fate lies with the appeal he is expected to file, but will he file for appeal. The hawks within the party would want him to and wrest power from the opposing party, thus making it a pary affair, but some whom might be classified as just below the doves would convince the incumbent to honourably resign, being the gentleman that he is, thus saving the tax payer much expense. This would be seen to be working together towards the greater good of the Edo people, where party affiliations would be relegated to the background and all would be seen to be working towards the common good for the greater number of the populace. For Benin? I certainly hope so So whatever, the outcome of the judgement has been heard, there is bound to be much ado, some would wait for a resignation which is far fetched and most would eagerly look forward to the next thirty days and the subsequent supreme court ruling. Till then, lets keep the peace. . . |
