We can generate off grid energy onsite for electricity using farm waste.we need not rely on NEPA.
I see the future coming when farmers will generate power on farm and sell to cities.
Lol my bro. Can't wait for that time o.

Total light period shud not be more than 16 hrs.
Tnx@ farmtech, but is there a scientific effect of light period being over 16hrs?

Pls no offence is intended. I'm asking this question from a practical mind approach not just based on the literatures we have all been reading.

Another reason why Im asking is because of NEPA most often they play with the power supply and that is why I decided to operate a light regime with over 16hrs, hoping +/-
the birds would still get the minimun light hour required.
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by AkayTopsy: 1:33pm On Mar 26, 2015
FarmTech:
Try giving them extra light from 6pm to 10pm, but increase it gradually. You must be consistent once u start else it will affect them badly. If there is no nepa u can use rechargeable lantern connected to car battery.
Tnx @ jamp I appreciate ur responsse and the phone call it is encouraging to know one is on track.

@farmtech tnx, but what do you think about this light regime which I've been operating in the past 6weeks. 3am - 6.30pm then 8pm-10pm. I decided to maintain light off between 6.30pm -8pm because even if I keep the light on, the birds always roost once the sunset by gathering together at on corner of the pen to the point of almost a stampede. I believe thise who operate liter system experience same.

How POTENT is the drug vis a vis the description on the pack?

It's normal so far as it does not happen all the time. You'll likely see different kinds of abnormal eggs like the ones described here.
Thanks for the link.

Eggcelent:
AkayTopsy. I THINK what you just witnessed is a result of erratic ovulation usually caused by inconsistent lightening system. You may wish to take a look at how you supply them artificial light. Success.
Tnx @eggcelent. That's exactly my thought. In a bid to get them feed at the early and coolest hours of the day, I usually on their light by 3am. But on that particular day, PHCN was seriouly doing DISCO with the power supply. 30mins ON 1hr OFF till day break. I guess there little or nothing I can do about it till I get my inverter installed.
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by AkayTopsy: 10:33pm On Mar 09, 2015
Farmers in the house. Can anyone give a scientific explanation to the following:

Fig1: The Egg weighing 98grams.
Fig2: The cracked Egg carrying another shelled egg inside.
Fig3: The inner Egg after crack has a normal yolk and egg white.

Flock age: 24week old.

The average egg size of my flock is 55grams. Though on the average daily I get 1 or 2 extra large size egg, but they usually carry 2 yolks (not shelled egg like this one)

Any scientific explanation for this?

You can introduce the nests now and open nests are better. Ensure you pick the eggs regularly to avoid dirts and pecking.

Pls still on 3in1 vaccine, can I administer the vaccine on 11weeks old pullet?
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by AkayTopsy: 4:23pm On Jan 13, 2015
Farmers in the house pls advice.

I currently have 1000 pullets. 75% @ 17wks while the remaining 25% are 10wks old. Can all the birds share 1000 dose of 3in1 vaccine: i.e vaccinate the older birds then keep the remaining vaccine in the fridge for 6wks when the younger pullets will be due. Or should I just vaccinate both the old and the young pullets now?

Or should i just vaccinate all of then now.?

HappyNewYear to everybody. @jamp i'm still waiting 4 ur visit to my farm o. @fnk, bro thanks 4 keeping this forum alive with all the broiler info. Though i've not been to your farm, but i believe from your posts you're living my dream 4 the broiler business. (Can we have an appointment pls. I wouldnt mind booking a same day cheep return flight for few hours visit to your farm)

2014 was in deed a very great year 4 me. Full of challenges with great lessons learnt. Some painful, some hillariously painful (because it exposed how naive one can be when it comes to business). Thank God for the progress achieved as well. I started with and still doing Broilers, but gradually the Pullets are growing along. Though I,ve not started making income that match the investment, slowly but surely we will get there.

My appreciation also goes to all those who responded to my need during one of the respiratory crisis i experienced with the birds. Here we are those pullets will be 17weeks tue Jan.

My Advice 4 all:
CREDIT AND TRUST is key in Biz, be careful when choosing those you give these previlages.

FarmTech: ..
Which antibiotic are u currently giving them?
Started with Gentadox then Tylodox now Floricol. Note all these were based on Vet Dr recommendation.

Though the Mortality has dropped to like 14birds as @ Yday, it's still worrisome that I still see a lot of birds sneezing. I've culled\Issolated more than 15 chicks, balnced the room temperature with Thermometer, Ventilation Checked, but everytime I enter d brooding room I still hear a new chick sneeze.

This respiratory Infection THEY SHOW ME O!
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by AkayTopsy: 1:43pm On Sep 23, 2014
condi1704: bros some effects na management issue. can u check if the brooding temperatures is not too much as well maybe u dey use charcoal whey dey commot smoke or u don block everywhere whey no air dey come in for air exchange. pls crosscheck. if not then anti respiratory disease drug is ok
You're right but that isn't the case because I'm on the ground, unlike before where I leave the brOoding inthe hand of my helps.

Thank God the mortality figure has dropped.
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by AkayTopsy: 8:39pm On Sep 22, 2014
@agroconsult, farmtech don't be suprised o! I did as u said, took samples of the birds to my Vet, but she also experessed her disappointment that there's no Lab in abj that one can run any serious test. So if we have any intrested VET\INVESTOR they abuja market is an opportunity to tap into.

I think I'll try IMMUCOX on my next batch of birds I belive coccx is a disease that needs to be given as much attention as ND and IB.

My Birds:NO mucus, but they sneeze and as well open ther mouth for breath. Based on the situation report I gave my vEt, she confirmed that Respiratory Disease is pervasive in Zartech birds (it's an hatchery thing) that needs to have been addressed since the birds were day old. Well she recommended another antibiotic. And the birds are now on it.

Thank you all for your concern and advice.
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by AkayTopsy:
FarmTech: ..
With that number of birds, my advice is that you rush and do a lab test. It's not that costly and it'll save u a lot. If you're giving the wrong antibiotics, you're not only wasting money, you're also increasing the chances to your birds having resistance to antibiotics. Take heart and have courage. Keep them warm at all time.
I get your point o. Unfortunately animal labs are not easy fetch here in abuja axis.

PLS FARMERS WITHIN ABUJA SULEJA AXIS KINDLY ADVICE US ON ANY VET LAB IN THIS AREA.

ALSO what is the house opinion on IMMUCOX (I understand it is an ANTICOCCX Vaccine) Has anyone tried it and how effective is the vaccine?

Tnx @farmtech

@ Jamp, Farmtech, Agrotconsult and other experienced farmers in the house:

S.O.S please.

I got 1000 pullets and 500 broilers from Zartech on Tue and the DOCs arrived looking good. But by Wed I noticed the Pullets are having respiratory problem as few of them look like they are breathing through their mouth.

I have lost on the average of 30 pullets 5 broiler cosecutively in the last last 3days.

What do I do to control the situation please.

PS: I started the birds on vitamins and antibiotics since day2 (Gentadox and now Tylodox)

Help please this is my first batch of Layers though I've done several batches of Broilers.

jamp: Good evening huz. Sorry I ve been quite for sometime.
Thank God I got my first egg today @18wks 3 days. I was so happy. So I hope see more from tomorow.

@Nbg4real, the vacination schedule u posted is too much. To me some are not necesary. My breed is Isa brown from CHI and I use Top feed.

My friend that got his pullets d same day wit me saw egg 2days before they clock 18wks,dis is cos he started giving them light in the evening on time thereby fforcing them to lay early which I heard is not good. I ve started giving them light in d night 7-9pm gradually I will introduce light all nite.

Thanks huz for ur support and advice esp Omotiti, obnelly n Fnk. Also to my news friends from kubwa.

We shall all get there
Congrat bro! I feel elated reading ur post now. Our success story has just start, God willing we shall all have more to share.

fnk: Don't you think you need couple more blocks around.
For proper ventilation I don't think there's any need for additional coach of blocks. By the time I bring in Battery cages (in the future) the lower level birds will not get proper flow of air if the block's too high.

Anybody with a contrary opinion can help us to throw more light, the construction work's still in progress, we are all here to learn.
