floraine: Visa approved July 17th(to God be the glory)
17th July happened to be my birthday!!!
First timer at US embassy and silent reader.
God bless everyone for your help and insight ,may God enrich you greatly
A guy before me was denied , he sounded so rehearsed and he was shaky even in his tone
Fast forward..
I got interviewed by a young pretty lady windows 8
VO; Goodmorning
Me: Goodmorning
VO: how are you?(with a pleasant smile)
Me: I am great you?(smiling) And vo replied.
VO: please pass me your i20 and passport
Me: here please
VO: why are you going to the US
ME: I am going for my studies
VO: course?
Me: Masters In business administration and management
VO; why this school?
VO: did you write any test?
Me; no please, the school informed me when I come over I can write the test before the end of the first semester(cos of my course,it's allowed)
ME: they are one of the best public universities in the state of Texas, their MBA is certified by the body AACSB and their MBA has a minor concentration in MIS(management Informations Systems)
VO;how many schools did you apply to
Me: three schools and I listed them
(all this while she kept smiling and looking at me as I responded and I looked calm, relaxed and spoke calmly even when my heart was racing)
VO: when did you graduate
Me: 2013
VO:what iv you been doing since then
Me: I completed the compulsory NYSC programme then got a job in **** bank as a customer service personnel....(VO cuts in)
VO:Have you travelled out before
Me: yes please, I travelled to Dubai for vacation 2014
VO: Why did you choose to study MBA?
Me: The knowledge and skill I will obtain, I will apply it to my career goal in the banking industry in Nigeria
VO; she pauses, looks at me while my eye balls were fixed on her. She was quiet for a while and asked me, why are you perculiar about MIS.
That put me off cos I didn't expect it(my luck was my job role, we work hand in hand with MIS team and I genuinely have interest in MIS)
Me: I have interest in MIS because business has gone beyond buying and selling and recording sales, we can now use computers to support and make managerial decisions.
VO: smiles and says I will be approving your visa
Me: smiling and didn't hear anything afterwards(that thing is true oooo, you won't hear anything again)
Slight tips:
Be as calm as possible, it's not easy but imagine you are speaking to your sibling and dress very well and smartly, look the part. I might sound like I'm over exaggerating the VO kept starring at my outfit, weavon, and my wristwatch(not bragging) just look the part
Pray to God aggressively and fast very necessary. It can only be God oooo!!!
VO did not ask for single document
THANKS ONCE AGAIN Congrat!!! What's the name of this school if you don't mind me asking. |

Teminiyii: Hey guys, I really want to say that this forum helped me greatly, my visa was approved today(7:45am) at the Lagos state embassy, after denying me a B1/B2 visa last year and also delayed at Abuja embassy last week Thursday a F1 visa but here I am today giving thanks to God Almighty for his love and mercy towards me. It was just pure favour and God's grace I received today. I also want to use this opportunity to thank Mrchillz, Ability247, blacnewton, eniolorunfe, Texrem, lagosismyhome and segun for ur contributions in one way or the other to the success of my visa. God will continue to bless u guys. Amen

Me: Am going for my masters in...... as mentioned above Vo: why Cleveland state university? Me: I chose Cleveland state university cos their mathematics and statistics department offers a good research and curriculum that's inline with my career pursuit wch will be apathway to achieving my career goal as a data analyst. Before the interview was just singing all things re working for my good and it's intention and indeed God made everything work for my good. You're a failure only wen u fail and u refuse to stand again... And put God first in everything even wen it seems that nothing is working trust me God is working. luzon: Just update your profile with the corrected DS160 code and pray you have 3 working days between the update and youR appointment. You then reprint your appointment page that tallies with the ds160 and take to the embassy. If it doesn't get to three working days even if your profile is updated to tally, it won't tally with their manuscript they have at the checks. You will be turned back to reschedule. From an experienced forumite So do you know if the person turned back had to pay another visa fee ? |

Also, I don't think someone can both specialize in analysis and PDE I'm not so sure because analysis is under pure math and PDE is applied math. You were suppose to stick to either pure (analysis, Algebra, differential geometry etc) or Applied math ( PDE, ODE, Numerical analysis etc). I was a Math Major person until I decided to focus on statistics option. |

Whatever !!! 234ng44uk: Oga, we've closed that topic. You're late to the show. If you read on, you will realise intelligent deductions of Electronic and Time2smile. But whose business is it if you had a Pass degree and a GRE score of 260? Everyone to his/her cross. One good thing with USA is that there's always something for everyone. While some universities are very selective, others are happy to accept just anyone who meet certain basic requirements. In the future I'll desist from making such comments. I was only trying to give my honest opinion that admission in US is competitive and funding isn't just awarded based on "grace", you have to stand out in some way. That's my opinion though, you're also free to think otherwise. |

234ng44uk: Misleading? You are the one misleading here. The bolded for one is a lie from the pit of hell. Stop the reference to fictitious people. From part 1 to part 11 of this thread, thousands of posts, no one ever claimed to receive full funding with that score. Please don't stand in the way of others success. She clearly has the ability to do better, encourage her to do so otherwise she will be here this time next year lamenting on securing admissions without funding. I know people(some of my friends) with a GPA of 2 2 and GRE of 280's and were still able to secure funding(full ride self). I have my evidence. You guys should stop sitting back there and make hasty generalization !!! As much as nairaland is so helpful, some people tend to over hype the thread and every member on the thread. !!! I also want you to know that anything is possible in this life.. I got everything from my school before I visited this thread. Some people are fond of misleading and making people think less of themselves here. They will bring their profile and you guys will start discouraging them. There is something called need based scholarship. If funding is available, they will definitely give anyone applying at that moment. DO NOT THINK if people don't visit nairaland, they will not get funding or they won't get their visa or they won't be admitted into good schools or program. Thanks |

Congrat jare bro and so people will just open their mouth and be saying one cannot get a visa with a community college admission as if they are the VO. The point is, if you have a good reason for picking a school, picking a course or whatever, your visa will be approved !!! I've seen someone who got a bachelors degree in Nigeria and still came here for associate degree and he was issued visa. Congratulation again. akandry: All praises to God Almighty for a successful visa Approval after I was denied visa two months ago( April 12 to be precise wasn't a nice day for me) and that was how I found this thread.i got advice from the gurus to refire and apply for a bachelor's degree rather than the associate degree I got denied for but I believe in God intervention and still went with the a community college I20...fast forward this morning the rain was much Chaii rain way sock me today no be here ooo plus the bus I entered stop at oniru if you are familiar with vi and I had to walk from there to bonny camp before I could get keke( I wish you could see me that morning you go pity for me) after my biometric verification I was on the line watin to be interview and I was fortunate to listen to profojah Interview Chaii the guy was so audible and the way he was gesticulating and explain his program as well I was like which kind wahala course be this bayi pale kini ....that's how I was directed to window three fresh looking young guy always with white earpiece.......
Vo: Good morning Me: morning sir with a smile Vo: what's yours study plan? Me: I will be taking 64 credit of course work at a period of 24 month which some of the courses I will be taking include engineering graphics, dynamic, calculus and the likes prior to my graduation which I will be transferring to obtain a bachelor's degree ( vo look impressed with my response after denying the first two guys after bleeping with their response) Vo: Why associate degree and not bachelor's degree Me: I'm going for an associate degree because the only place I can get so much in depth knowledge on my field of study in my first two years at an affordable rate before transferring to a 4 years university happens to be a community college, so it's not really all about the associate degree but it's about what I can aquire and gain during the period before transferring Vo: Why did you choose this school Me: I choose baltimore city community college because I was impressed with the standard of the program I Was applying for after some extensive review I found out that they offer more hands on approach of the courses I will be taking compare to some traditional four years university in their first two years which was very impressive and was what I was looking for. Vo: what are your plans after graduation? Me: I intend transferring my 64 credit to Morgan state university to obtain a bachelor's degree in civil engineering after which I will be returning to practice in one of the top construction companies here in Nigeria Vo: when did you finish secondary school Me:2012 Vo:what have you been doing since then Me:after sec school I enrolled to a technical school to learn about satellite TV and cctv installation and afterwards I applied for an Advance level program which I finished in 2016 Vo:which other schools did you apply to Me: Morgan state university and Wester Nebraska community college Vo: so you intend going for an associate degree then you will transfer? Me yes sir Vo: I will be approving your visa pick it up in the..... Me: I went deaf and almost jump up..
I want to say a very big thanks you to everyone on the is thread you are all amazing and special thank you to @Teedawg and @neurosic for a one month intensive mock interview I don't know you in person to thank you enough but God Almighty will surely reward you and I hope to meet you guys someday..... That's how I got my visa approved for a community college |

gaviria: Good morning all. I'm a new member but I've been following so many threads on Nairaland since last year including this one without registering as a member. Everything has been going smoothly, i learned a lot. And it helped me in my GRE and TOEFL where I scored 312 and 100 respectively. But now I have an issue. And please I need the gurus in the house (walspring, imperioxx and other) to help. I don't know what the issue is. I applied for visa last month during the interview I wasn't all that prepared, so I stammered in the first question which was "Why did you choose this course?". I answered because I want to specialize in control Engineering which is a branch of electrical engineering and I enjoyed the theory behind it when I was an undergraduate, it was interesting and challenging " and every other question was just a formality. Me myself I knew I messed up so I didn't care much when she gave me the blue slip. But since that day I've been preparing hard for the interview the second time. I had an answer to virtually all the questions that could be asked because I read a lot of transcript and put down my answers, read them and knew them like the back of my hands. So I went for the interview yesterday again. And this was the transcript Greetings and pass me your passport and i20 VO: Why are you going to the US? Me: I'm going for my masters degree in Electrical and electronics engineering at the southern Illinois university in edwardsville, and I chose this school because it's one of the best schools in the Midwestern region of the United States in Electrical Engineering according to usnews.com and forbes.com, and most of the professors in the department are Ivy League trained which is synonymous to having an Ivy League education at a cheaper rate, like professor Tim York of the department who won the 2016 IEEE award of the year for his research paper on "Polarization on image sensoring" and they also have excellent research laboratories and facilities that'll aid in the advancement of my career in this field so that when I come back to the country I can be able to put my skills to work in the power sector of the country as power is one of the major issues we're facing in the country I'd like to come back and contribute my quota to the improvement and development of the sector. (P.S: I said every word)
VO: Where did you learn about all these you just said? Me: I went online to know more about the school because the last time I came I couldn't explain my situation very well.
VO: Who's paying for this trip? Me: My Dad.
VO: what does he do? Me: He'a a renowned lawyer with his own firm and he has about 10 associates working for him.
VO: What are the qualifications needed for this course or something (I didn't hear him very well, but I heard qualifications) Me: I have a bachelors degree in computer engineering from the university of Lagos.
VO: Have you ever traveled out? Me: I went for an AIESEC conference in Ghana when I was an undergraduate. (First interview I said the same thing but I forgot to put it in my first DS-160, but I put it in the second DS-160 that I've traveled to Ghana before)
VO: Where do you work currently? Me: I just completed my National Youth service in April this year as I graduated in November 2015. (In My DS-160 that place they asked for employment status and all, I put Where I worked during my service year.)
VO: Are you married? Me: No, I'm just 24 *laughs* .. VO laughed too and said "you never know".
Types for like 3 minutes non stop. And told me sorry you're not eligible at this time. I was weak, because I answered all the questions with so much fluency, I didn't stammer one time. I was just flowing. Please help me what can I do? I want to go for the third time asap because I have the answers to every technical question they can ask. Thanks a lot for the help. The answer to why are you going to the US should just be; I'm going for my masters degree in Electrical and electronics engineering at the southern Illinois university in Edwardsville. That's it. Sometimes, it's not good to be too forward and even all these statements you made were too boring. It's like you went to memorize some unnecessary information. Anyways I believe you can still get it. Keep working hard and do not give up. |

PrinceDekunle: Only a VO knows who deserves a visa. Nobody has a clue on who to and who not to be granted a visa. Let's be mindful of our predictions. What if he ends up getting a visa and someday re-read this comment of yours? He'll only smile at your ignorance That's what I was trying to prove to him. Mayflowa: This is the truth, you would hardly be granted a visa on another master that is a version of the first. It makes no sense to. What if he is going to the same major but different option? for example, you had your MA in mathematics under math science but not you are going for MA statistics under math science ?? |

Nice shayhune, Congrat and welcome to BGSU shayhune: My appointment was slated for 6:30am. Got to the embassy around 5:30am. Had to wait till 6am before the whole process of checking in. Fast forward. Got in to the main house. Did my fingerprint and waited for the VO to call me. I think it was window 4 or 5. So this is how the interview went: VO: Good morning Me: Good morning ma VO: Pass me your passport VO: So why are you going for this Masters Me: I'm going for my Masters because I finished my undergraduate study in Computer science and this course will give me a competitive advantage in my field here in Nigeria (Sincerely, I was caught off guard with this question, maybe coz it wasn't asked the way I expected) VO: So who will be paying for this? Me: I was awarded a full tuition waiver and a graduate assistantship and my dad will be covering the remaining funds. VO: So what's the name of your school? Me: Sorry, I didn't get that question ma VO: What's the name of the school you're going to? Me: BGSU VO: How many schools did you apply to? Me: I applied to three schools VO: So Why BGSU? Me: I choose this school because of the amount of quality research being carried out there in the field of Computer Science and Software Engineering. My research interest matches with that of the faculty Dr. Bleep Bleep which is on development of end users software engineering technologies. Hence, I am keen on being part of his research group and learn more. Also, the courses being offered there are designed in such a way that they are more research oriented and it best fits my career growth. (She was just nodding her head like Agama) VO: What's your research topic? Me: I'll be working on the development of end user software engineering technologies. This is a research area that aims to invent new kinds of technologies that collaborate with end users to improve the quality of their software. There is a need for this outcome because research shows that the number of end users creating their own softwares greatly exceeds the number of professional developers and that the software they create is riddled with errors. (She nodded her head again. In my mind, I was saying I no dey commot for here without my visa) VO: Do you work? Me: Yes ma VO: Where? Me: I work as bleep at firm Bleep VO: So what programming language do you know? Me: Java, C++, C#, Python VO: Where did you graduate from? Me: School bleep VO: Where did you do your NYSC? Me: I served at bleep state at an higher institution and worked as a teaching assistant. VO: How many siblings do you have? Me: I have bleep siblings VO: Are they all in Nigeria? Me: Yes ma. They're all in Nigeria VO: Did you write any test? Me: Yes. I wrote Toefl and GRE VO: what was your GRE score? Me: I had 309 in GRE and 4.0 in AWA VO: Have you travelled out before? Me: No. I have not had reasons to.
Then she brought out the white paper and the golden words came 'Your visa has been approved and will be processed within 4 business days'...I didn't hear the remaining words. I was already in La La land with my teeth shining like closeup advertisement. Lol. No document was asked. Not even my birth certificate wey I carry go(lol)
I just walked out smiling and feeling like the happiest man in the world.
Lemme share my lil success tips for prospective visa applicants 1. Pray, pray and pray. For indeed without God we can do nothing. 2. Prepare. You just need to prepare. Don't go and do free styling at the embassy oo. Know your course well. Read previous transcripts. I read all the transcripts(both accepted and rejected) in the dropbox link that was dropped here and prepared my own transcript using the responses in the previous interview. 3. I rehearsed my answers oo facing the mirror for like 2 weeks, speaking to myself everyday and watching my eye contact and body posture through the mirror. Pls rehearse and if you can memorize like me, it's an added advantage. 4. Maintain eye contact with the VO. Don't look away for once, smile and speak confidently. I was just smiling like WhatsApp Smiley at the embassy. The visa interview ain't that scary jare. 5. Speak concisely. Don't talk too much. Just give the main points. 6. Fill the DS-160 by yourself. Don't allow one agent to fill in rubbish for you. I guess the VO was asking me some questions based on my DS-160 info. 7. Again, Pray and trust God. If you think the God factor is not involved in this visa tin, na you sabi.
After Finland bounced me last year, God has vindicated me. Make I come dey go Trumpland. Na me and trump go run tins together. Lol
Pls bear with my long epistle. I didn't even know I was asked these much questions until I started typing. Overjoy is doing me ATM.
God bless everyone here who has one way or the other been a blessing to me via their posts.
Wishing all prospective visa applicants success in their interviews.
