Nairaland / General / Re: Keeping Children From Speaking Vernacular. by AkoEja: 6:38pm On Nov 22, 2012
Studies have shown that speaking more than one language can be advantageous to the understanding of both languages. You can bring in what you know in one language into the other to enhance it. Language is tied to culture; the knowledge of one language, and hence culture can make a child produce better stories in an essay test for example. The UN secretary general, Mr Kofi Annan, can speak several other languages apart from his native tongue and English, which he obviously speak very fluently.

I speak the language fluently and I also speak English very well. In fact, I studied Yoruba at school certificate level. I also read it lot of Yoruba books in addition to English books. I find that I frequently use my knowledge of Yoruba to make my English essays better.

I have applied this knowledge to my children, even though they did not grow up in Nigeria, they were able to speak Yoruba fluently. They were both best in class in English and English literature.

While the word "vernacular" means your own native language, it also as a derogatory connotation as in "inferior language", and we should try not to use it to describe our own language.

The problem of self rejection is not restricted to language alone in Nigeria, especially among the Yorubas. Nigerians tend to reject everything that is native to them.

This is because of the slave mentality and inferiority complex.

Nigeria’s Federal government has terminated the contract concessioning the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway reconstructiona and maintenance to Bi-Courtney Highway Services, headed by the Lagos lawyer, Dr. Wale Babalakin
This development came more than three years after it awarded the road contract to the construction company..................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Let us hope the project is not completely abandoned. Bi-Courtney have taken us for a ride for far too long. Useless company run by thieving Idiots!!!

The problem with this country has is corruption... Why would anybody need to take 100 thousand dollars out of the country if he is not a politician who has stolen the money? Even if you have a single denomination of 50,000, people will not be taking the currency out of the country to spend as nobody.will accept it outside the country. It is only the dollar that the politicians can spend outside the country. So the argument of the Gov of the Central bank holds no water.

Foreign Affairs / Re: Romney And Obama: Who Won The First Debate? by AkoEja: 1:35am On Oct 05, 2012
the only reason a black man can feel happy that Pres Obama became president is the psychological impact it has on black people as being capable of reaching that high office.

it is moronic for people to expect the precedent of America to be the one that will bring Nigeria out of poverty and move our own country forward. America already has enough of its own problem to cope with. any team and American president does will be in the interest of America, not in the interest of other countries. There is nothing wrong in this.

Many Nigerians stupidly think that other countries are interested in them, when they themselves are not interested in their own country. Nigeria can only be moved forward by Nigerians not by foreigners.

Every country in the world that has moved forward have only done so because of the efforts of people of that country, not by the efforts of people from other countries.

The president and his henchmen should realise that they cannot be making statements based on secondment information from a newspaper. The president, of all people have access to all sorts of information that they should not be relying on a newspaper to make a broadcast to the whole mation on Independence Day, for that matter. It just shows how retarded this government's and is an example of how the country is being run by these fools. What a shame!
Travel / Re: Lagos Hotels 2nd Most Expensive Globally – Research By The Hogg Robinson Group by AkoEja: 7:37pm On Aug 21, 2012
This is quite common with the price of goods and services in Nigeria. You can usually find a good book Terry for £30-£40 in London, while in Lagos you would struggle to get one for £50. I have stayed in the Hilton hotel for £60 before, which is a four-star hotel. I think the main reason is that there is not enough competition. Judging by the size of Nigeria's economy and the availability of money within the country, one should be able to find a hotel for £20-£30 easily

Crime / Re: Woman Beats Foster-Son To Death For Stealing N50 by AkoEja: 7:08pm On Aug 08, 2012
Abuse of children is rampant in Nigeria, especially the abuse of house helps. I cannot count how many times I have prevented excessive beating of young children because of simple misdemeanour.

Unfortunately we do not have a government, so everybody can do whatever they like
Sports / Re: Why Nigerians Have Not Vamoosed At The Olympics Like Cameroonians? by AkoEja: 7:03pm On Aug 08, 2012
Nigeria has the largest population of Africans in the world. Every 5th black man is a Nigerian, so Nigerian should not disappear so quickly from the Olympics. In fact we should be winning medals, instead of disappearing. There was a time when when there was a very strong force in athletics and boxing, and for many Olympics we were always present in the finals of athletic events. We should not be celebrating not disappear, but asking the questions why we have not won any medals.

Politics / Re: Otedola/Lawan $620K Bribery Scandal Probe Hits Dead End by AkoEja: 9:14am On Jun 28, 2012
You guys need to think deep about this issue.
This money is probably being shared with some other thieves like him.
These guys steal money every day, and know many other acts of stealing by their fellow thieves including the president.
Behind the scenes, he would already have started threatening to expose even bigger stealing by more highly placed individuals if they don't help him out.

These guys are already putting pressure on the security services to soft-pedal. He who pays the piper dictates the tune. SSS will be powerless unless the presidency is strongly behind them. If not, they can't and won't do anything. Jonathan himself may be afraid that things could get out of hand, leading to further exposure of himself and his cronies.

Two possible things will happen in this case :

1. Farouk is found not guilty, because of lack of evidence
2. Farouk is found guilty but given a small 'punishment' to pacify Nigerians(unlikely).

The problem we have in Nigeria is that the presidency is corrupt; there is no way a weak and corrupt president can fight the king-pins of corruption we have in this country. Unfortunately, Jonathan looks innocent, and Nigerians gullibly believed he is genuine and clean. Why is he unable to declare his assets?

The only solution to our problems is if we join hands to bring in a strong genuine person as our president. All the ethnic idiocy we think and talk about will get us nowhere. I don't care who this person is - Ibo, Hausa, Yoruba,Ibiobios, Tapa, Kanuri etc- it does not matter!

Nigerians, wake up!

Sports / Re: Nigerian Premier League: Why Don't People Watch It? by AkoEja: 10:59am On May 27, 2012
Poor organisation.
Poorly recorded, poor quality films of the matches
Better quality international matches now readily available, and they make the quality of the film of our matches look even worse. You have to be a real die-hard supporter to want to watch such poorly produced poor quality films on TV

BUT;
Its a potential gold-mine for a TV entrepreneur. If a TV organisation can pump money into it and buy rights to all the matches, there is a lot of money to be made; but organisation is key.

The Premier League in Britain did not become so popular until a TV organisation(Sky - Sky sports, etc) pumped money into it(and they have made the money several times over).

Its difficult to imagine this is happening. Not too long ago, Fashola complained about the traffic problems she caused when she came to Lagos. It can only happen in a country ruled by morons. Zero quality! What a shame to the black race!
I can believe Jonathan is such an idiot and a thief too. He can easily curb her excesses, but he hasn't. He even went ahead to pregnate her! Or has she loaded her tummy with dollars?

I would like to use Skype to make international calls through the internet. Is this possible if I subscribe to the BlackBerry service on MTN OR GLO?

My second question is do I have to have a blackberry phone to use blackberry service? Specifically, is this possible on an Android smart phone? I will appreciate it if anyone can direct me on how to go about doing this if it is possible.

Politics / When Nigeria Is To Be Divided, What Would Be your Suggestions Or Divisions by AkoEja: 9:27am On Feb 04, 2012
When Nigeria is to be divided, what would be your proposed suggestions  or divisions.
Its obvious that this is going to happen fairly soon, as ethnicity is too rampant to stay as one country.
The Northerners (in general) hate the Igbos and Yorubas with a passion.
Igbos hate the the Yorubas and Northerners in equal measure.

The Yorubas are the only group you can say seem to be ready to tolerate the other tribes without as much deep hatred.
So, let us start the divisions here on Nairaland first!

it would have been nice to have 3 countries, but that would not work, ie

1. Oodua - for the mainly Yoruba West
2. Biafra - for the mainly Igbo East
3. Arewa - for the mainly Hausa/Fulani North

OOdua is the only one that is semi-homogeneous. Biafra will struggle as the South-South will not like to go with the Ibos. Arewa is also difficult due to the intolerance of the Northern Muslims as they will not accept the millions of Christians among them - the middle Belt christians, the North -East etc, and even the millions in Kano

Let us have your say here. Nigerian leaders should really be doing this now, let us sit down at a round table and split amicably, Nigeria is not one!
