Abagworo:
This post is the most reasonable and positive thread I have seen on any forum or news media associated with Nigeria since 2007.Nigeria in the 1970s was infrastructurally developed because roads were all in good condition, our schools were some of the best in Africa, there was steady power supply, the naira was competing in value with Dollar and Pound etc,

The mistake we made is repeating itself at the moment.Every state is competing in road construction, fly overs, cleanliness and leaving out the two key elements of development which is industrialization and Agriculture. No nation can develop based on importation of everything including food and tooth pick.

With the way things are going, once the oil price crashes,we are in for another long years of hardship.
very well said

good

this is what i am seeing in the near future, i tell you

also, don't forget that in the 70's we had the zice, tin mills in plateau which boosted nigeria in ways  tht even jos is still multiethnic tell today

we need to look at industral farming

car maunfacturing by investing in the ready made on like innoson cars]

go back to that ajeokota project

uranuim and gold mineing in sokoto and kano

coal to power the power sector.
etc

oil is going

The story of ajekuta is very sickening. Part of the reason the project failed was the lack of a firebrick factory  sad honestly I have a feeling that ajekuta and other industrilization projects are being sabotaged by foreign interests.

On the bright side firebricks are not hard to make so the private sector could theoretically handle that.  cheesy

Ekt bear you may be right about the private sector being able to do this. . .
ajeokuta is the most saddening thing about nigeria, but on the brighter note the firebricks can be done by someone with some couple of millions not even billions. and yes the foreign powers are in this because of the world trade of demand and supply.

also, ajeokuta still has a long way to go before being profitable

they still need foreign investment because of some machineries and professionals we need

also our Fresh gradutes need to know how this things work so they can be given the resposiblity in the near future

i think we can go for coal (although ineffiecent) since we are developing the SE as well in the process

think of the industriialstion that would bring to Nigeria as a whole

even other african countries would beg to be nigerians so they can work

i think the FG needs to do this
Politics › Another Blow To Pdp As Ex-speaker Decamps To Acn by aljharem3(op): 12:57am On Jul 09, 2011
BY SIMON EBEGBULEM, BENIN CITY
FORMER Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mr David Iyoha and the National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Senatorial leader in Edo Central, Chief Simeon Omofuma, have dumped the PDP for the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

Those who also decamped at a rally at Eguare Primary School, Ekpoma, yesterday, included Pastor Sam Odigie, Professor Ighalo, Barrister Ehigie Ehimua, son of a popular politician in Esanland known as Omosco and over three thousand members.

The former Speaker said he and the others decided to join the ACN to be part of the development train going on in the state.According to him “without any equivocation, we are being persuaded to move to ACN because of the developmental and people-oriented strides of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole”.

He continued: “there is no one here or around the state that is not aware of the transformation going on in public schools and other areas across the state. Look at this school where we are, is it not a wonder? A school like this will naturally transform the intellectual capacity of any child to excel academically.

“Your Excellency, there is no one driving or passing through Benin City that will not praise your foresight because your desire for standards is very high. These roads, like those constructed by Prof Ambrose Alli about 30 years ago, will stand the test of time.

“Your desire to better the life of people in the rural areas is seen with the massive road construction, opening up the towns and villages in Edo State. I commend your efforts. Late Prof Ambrose Alli did the same about 30 years ago, and today his life and work are still very fresh in our minds.

“your Excellency, 30 years from now, people will remember you for this monumental efforts.

Prosperity will not speak well of me and many other present here if we fail to embrace the opportunity provided by your selfless efforts for equal development of the communities in the state.”
Regarding steel mill: For me, I want to get the low-hanging fruit before worrying about the more difficult things. You can create a pretty nice economy and employ a lot of labor even if you just focused on textiles and food processing. And it doesn't require any sort of heavy government investment. Focus on dominating light industry in Nigeria and West Africa before going for heavy industry.

I disagree about Nigeria not being able to industrialize just on private sector alone. If there is 24/7 electricity, all those textile shops which they have in Eastern Asia, I don't see why I cannot have them in Nigeria. What structural disadvantage would Nigeria have? Labor is relatively cheap in Nigeria just like it is in Asia.
you see the thing about nigeria is tribalism, no section in the country wants a Nuclear power plant in there area

the north would shout

the west was even the first

it can not be done in the SS because of crude oil

the east would not allow it

the middle belt says they do not want it

so about power, i think that should be forgotten for now

coal can be used for steal mills etc what do u think

^^ we need the steel mill also, that is to expenisve for the private sector to do alone.

Nigeria cannot industrialize on the private sector alone, like England did, Because there is to much international competition.

For an African country to industrialize  the government needs to invest agressivly and put up protective tariffs.  The people must stop importing everything.
yeah but after the investment by the FG they need to sell it to a private investor

I really think you are missing the point.

If the government had 200 trillion dollars instantly what would they do? Embezzle 50% and spend the rest building world class schools and hospitals and universal health care & pensions.

I'm saying that that stuff like that is superficial development, Nigeria needs to focus on building industries.
ok, yes you are right on that bolded part

innoson cars cannot be made efficently without a steel factory and a steel factory cannot be built without a firebrick factory and the firebrick factory cannot work without 24 hour electricity.
ah you see that is the catch, i said heavy investment

now as u know the FG has spent upto 900 billion close to a trilion on ajekuta steel mine ( i brought the thread up sometimes ago)

this money has be swalloed up by the same FG that claim to have invested on it

as you rightly said innson cars is not effiecent without some certain industies being functional

that is what the FG needs to look at

Oil will end soon and the sooner we leave this oil madness and look to out population and how to feed, pay, employ them and still make money off them, the better

if the FG can spend trillions on abuja, then why can they do every thing in there power to get the steel mine working

the steal mines can work on coal  from enugu or wood from the west. it is not neccessary to have the power industry working but if it's works, then that is a bounes

now another point is that the FG can bring in experates to train FRESH GRADUATES on how to build the engines etc

the word Fresh is very important.

if all this is done, the innoson cars will be part private part FG where shares of 90% fg and 10% owner

then watch as nigeria would be the best country in africa and indeed top 10 in the world

Building world class schools, hospitals, importing the best cars etc. Instead of investing in a steel factory.

That is trying to develope without industrializing.
no way, that would not go far unless u are using crude oil money ie resources
Business › Re: Nigeria Is Trying To Develop Without Industrializing by aljharem3: 12:27am On Jul 09, 2011
the only way nigeria can leave this mess and upgrade is too invest heavly on the innoson cars

that alone would make branches to other areas even electricity

all this textile etc would not do much

once nigeria can invest in innoson cars or a car industry then we would kick off

the workers that employ alone is unimagianble in nigeria terms

I am from a neighboring town to these people. These towns are suburbs of my town. They are bilingual and very friendly. They are not what the news paper portrayed. They do not generally loath being called Igbo. In fact, Ms. Nigeria 1960 who was Ms. Anyamelune was from Ugbodu. She did not tell Nigerians that she was Yoruba. She flaunted her Igboness.

Nduka Ugbade the famous footballer is another person from Ugbodu. You'll never hear him say he is Yoruba. Do these people speak Yoruba? Yes but they also speak Igbo. Within Anioma and outside the area, they do not mind being called Igbo. I am equally sure they are also proud of their Yoruba heritage. They have assimilated though and look exactly like other Anioma neighbors.

There is no crisis of identity for them. They've accepted their fate as Anioma/Igbo and are regarded as such by Issele-Uku the biggest neighboring town, Onicha UKU, Onicha Ugbo, Onicha Olona, Ezi and others.  Outside the area, they'll usually say they are from Issele-Uku which is technically correct. So please sheath your sword.

The Oloza was playing to the gallery considering that Tribune is a Yoruba paper.

alj harem aka Jason is really foolish.

1. Igboland is not landlocked

2. Igbos have no history of colonizing anyone.

3. Our territory is already defined, by the names of Igbo settlements

4. Igbos have never enslaved their neighbors, so why would we start now?

5. Igboland has oil in Imo, Abia and Anambra. Why claim something we already have.

6. Igbos have no dream of empire. We are the only people in Nigeria to practice true DEMOCRACY.
yeah right it is not landlock, why not tell us the igbo costal clan

2what about the ojukwu statement when he told the minorities that the statue would still remain the same in biafra

3 igbo land stops in anambra, abia, and co, no way in delta, edo and benue

4 ok tell us about the ngwa mumu, u think everyone is ignorant as u

5 and so does lagos, ogun, delta, edo ondo among other so what is ur point

Well, my take is that every group has a right to have their own identity and also has the right to align with a bigger group if they so wish. I don't think the first six points are strictly true of the igbos. However, many of them have expressed some of those sentiments here. The minorities have rights and those rights MUST be respected. Let's do away with this "domination" thing and learn to live as one.
yeah sure, u are very correct. but do they understand that ? although some do but a minority among them are very delusional

you need to read ezeuche's post to get into there head

go to andre uweh, Ngogoma, abadaba, etc to see the rubbish they post

yeah i am not against anyone claiming igbo be it ikwerri, infact i would prefer if that is the case but there are some provocative statement made u would be like it is imposble

now think it only happens on nairaland, go to one of the stu.pid ohaneze chief call Chief Uche talking arrogantly about lagos that they are 60% of the population

so you i have come to the conclusion that this minority among them are really spoilling it for the wider igbo i tell yeah

anyway, we are one
