Kobojunkie:
^^^ Lagos has in the last 30 years been a State in-planning(less in actual implementation). If you lived in that city from the 70's, to this period, you would know this problem has been building up since before then. What is happening here is not global warming, or illegal structures(or whatever we want to call them since this same administration started off by clearing much of the illegal structures right in it's early years). The problem is the state is still being run without adequate drainage and waste management in place. Simple!

Only you are also willing to blame the Tsunami that happened in Japan, and the yearly hurricanes in America on global warming(and with solid proof), I suggest you stay away from using that label even here. Lagos does not live in a special world. The same rules that apply in other coastal cities and towns apply to Lagos. If the state does not put in place a drainage system worth it's existence, then it has no business being by the coast.
ok madam kobojunkie, you are right

Kobojunkie:
Please Stop making things up! If you have no back up for claims, then don't spew it. The same Lagos that many of us grew up in -- the same Lagos that Fashola himself demolished most all of the illegal structures in. Suddenly you want to claim that the reason for the floods the state has been fighting for more than 3 decades, is SUDDENLY as a result of phantom structures you claim are blocking the water ways. By your speak there, we might as well take down the whole of Manhattan/Shanghai/Victoria Island, Tokyo etc. since all of those have structures constructed on what used to be water land , simply because Lagos failed to deal with an age old problem, even the romans dealt with and came up with some of the best used solutions for.
no no no kobo i am not saying the flooding is JUST due to buildings

a lot of factors actually come into play and unfortunatlly building sites comes into play

you see kobo

when natural water way is blocked, it is the water body finds an alternative route or trys to forces it's way through by leeching or even accumulates

the case with lagos is that some of this houses are built on this site

as i said earlier, due to the foundation of houses and water either finds an alternative route or accumulates

now majority of the time, it finds an alternative route

if that is the case, then it is easy for the water to burst it's banks because the route is not deep enough(leeching) to accommodiate excess water and in this case extended period of rain

Why do you folks like making stuff like this up? Do you have any real data to back these claims up?
no kobo i don't have data to prove it because it is obvious if u live in lagos

also the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Dr. Oke Osanyintolu has confirmed the same thing

i think that was planned unlike now or recent times

now that land is scares in lagos, some ideeiots will sell waterways to people just to make money

Seun:
How will demolishing homes stop flooding??
this houses were built on natural water ways, thus blocking the flow of water

by demolishing them, u create this way again

for example

there is place in inner makoko where the road linking makoko to yaba was cut into half by water.

this shows that that is the natural way of the water

Seriously, when are these people going to learn? What did our friends of SW do when MEND bombed Lagos? Not that I welcome any bombing of Lagos, but if Lagos is attacked by boko haram, nothing will happen other than the usual "TALK,,,TALK,,,TALK". Violence in the North is not a new phenomenon. It has been happening for over 60 years. Even during the time of British colonialism, there were riots in the North. Blaming Goodluck for this recent spate of violence is simply wrong. How would you deal with Boko Haram who are a faceless enemy? Any person in the North can be either a Boko Haram member or a sympathizer.
violence is a new phenomenon in the north

we are peaceful people and hate violences,

riots in the north has never gotten to bombing before
