The Federal Government has selected seven sites for the construction of nuclear power stations for the purposes of generating electricity. A source in the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology who spoke on the telephone with our correspondent on Tuesday listed some of the sites to include Lagos/Ogun states, Yola in Adamawa State, Ondo/Ekiti, and Benue . The source, who preferred to be anonymous, explained that the sites were confirmed at a workshop organised in the second week of December by the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission on the siting of nuclear power plants in the country. Issues surrounding nuclear power are often shrouded in secrecy due to security considerations as well as the need to avoid them being misinterpreted. According to the source, experts, some of whom came from the International Atomic Energy Agency, approved preliminary reports on the seven sites. IAEA is the global body that regulates atomic energy use. The participants at the five-day workshop also demanded that more work be done at the sites, especially on seismic data. The climatology and geology of the sites are generally favoured as there has never been a history of volcanic eruption, he said. He explained that Nigeria could overcome the challenge of seismic data by networking with neighbouring countries with a similar geological history. He also said that the workshop asked that sites chosen should not be flood plains and areas with a huge water table. Nigeria is expected to generate 1,000 mega watts of electricity from nuclear sources by 2017 and increase the quantum to 4,000 by 2027. The Minister of Science and Technology, Mrs. Grace Ekpiwhre, who spoke at a workshop organised by NAEC, said the targets would be met if the nation stuck to the Nuclear Energy Road Map. According to her, the Federal Government first mooted the idea of deploying nuclear power plants as part of the national strategy to ensure energy security over 30 years ago. She explained that the rationale behind the renewed effort at exploring nuclear energy for electricity generation was the wide gap that existed between electricity demand and generation capacity in the country. Ekpiwhre indicated that the road map consisted of a three phase technical framework and strategic plan, adding that unlike other sources of electricity generation, nuclear sources were sensitive. The deployment of nuclear technology necessitates collaboration with worthy development partners and relevant international bodies such as the International Atomic Energy Agency, she said. The minister explained that partnership with the IAEA would also ensure that the nation avoided controversy in the attempt to fully exploit the peaceful applications of nuclear technology for the nations socio-economic development. This partnership will also ensure that our programme is properly guided within the safety, safeguards and framework of the international community, as well as avoid mistakes with possible negative consequences, she said. http://www.oyibosonline.com/cgi-bin/newsscript2.pl?record=3036 |
By Jude Njoku Determined to contribute to the reduction of the country’s housing shortfall put at a staggering 16 million units, Messrs Pilot Communications Limited, publishers of Pilot Property Magazine and Convergence Properties and Estate Limited, last week, unveiled plans to build low and medium income housing estates in Ikorodu and neighbouring Sagamu. Specifically, the two estates would be sited at Igbogbo-Baiyeku in Ikorodu in Lagos State and Shiun Owode in the Mowe-Ofada axis in Ogun State. The Ikorodu estate which would be built on a 100 acres parcel of land purchased from the Oke-Ira descendants family, is said to be close to the take-off point of the proposed 4th mainland bridge. Unveiling plans for the proposed schemes at a media parley, the managing director of Pilot Communications, Mr Goddy Amaezechi explained that the estates would be developed in phases. The first phase which has already commenced, involves the sale of about 100 standard plots of land. Amaaezechi who was assisted by the Chairman of Convergence Group, Mr. Emmanuel Obaweki and the managing director of Convergence Properties, Mrs. Lauertta Obaweki, said the the joint venture is offering a plot of land at Pilot estate at a promotional price of N495,000 while those who want to pay on instalments would pay N50,000 monthly for 12 months. The amount, he stated is exclusive of the development fee which has not yet been worked out. An estate at Igbogbo, Ikorodu “Pilot Estate is situated in a very serene and already developed part of Ikorodu; Igbogbo-Baiyeku. With a functional Lagos State Ferry Service already helping to reduce transit time from the area to the Island to about seven minutes and the prospect of the 4th mainland bridge coming to the area, Igbogbo-Baiyeku becomes a big attraction to investors”, he said. He stated that Pilot Estate is free from all known encumbrances (omoonile troubles) and currently has a global C of O. “The estate land is dry, flood- free, easily accessible and ready for immediate development. Other estates close to Pilot Estate include: the Lagos State Low Cost Estate, Law Union Estate and Nichemtex Cooperative Estate”, he said. Convergence Estate on the other hand is situated in another rapidly developing area; Shiun-Owode around the Mowe-Ofada axis. Projected to benefit from the Lagos-Ogun Mega-City development plan; there are currently about 40 other developed and developing estates in the area. The proposed estate which is about 20 minutes drive from Ikeja via the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, is covered by a global C of O and totally free from government acquisition. A Plot of land in Convergence Estate currently sells for a promotional price of N295,000 for those who intend to pay at once and N30,000 monthly payments over a 12 months period. Amaezechi said the companies will put in place first class facilities in the estates. They include: good road network, perimeter fencing, recreation areas, street lights, 24hrs security, properly landscaped and green environment. Both estates, he said have the support of three major banks – First Bank, Zenith Bank and First City Monument Bank. The Pilot Communications boss stated that both estates have been priced to ensure that average Nigerians are able to also become house owners in the estate. “We have decided to make the price of land in both estates very affordable to make things easy for our target market, which is both the middle and low income earners”, he explained. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/09/investors-unveil-plans-to-develop-pilot-convergence-estates-2/ |

Oluwole Smith, a Professor of Law at the University of Lagos and former Dean of Faculty of Law, Lagos State University, has said that the Lagos State Tenancy Law is one which has too many loopholes and is bound to fail. Mr Smith, who said this recently in Lagos at a dinner held to celebrate his elevation to the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, added that considering the accommodation deficit in Lagos, rent control was not the issue to be addressed. "The issue of rent control can never work," he said. "We've had it since the 70s; Mobolaji Johnson, for example, as the Governor of Lagos State. But we've discovered that those laws became white elephant sooner than they were enacted and I want to see this law as suffering the same fate for two reasons. "The first one is there is acute shortage of accommodation and prospective tenants would either take the position of the landlord or leave it. So it's either you want the accommodation and you take it, or you don't want it and you leave it," said Mr Smith. He added that landlords have nothing to lose from the law. "When you have a scenario where the landlord sees a prospective tenant, he says are you ready to play ball or not? This house belongs to me; it does not belong to Fashola. Is it Fashola's house you want or my own house?" He advised that the state government should provide mortgage schemes that would assist the poor in getting houses. For Mr Smith, the problem is not with the landlord hiking rent, the problem is with the inability of the government to provide true low cost housing that would take care of the poor. "All these boils down to social problems," he said. "Law cannot be divorced from the social reality of the society, and that is what the House of Assembly failed to realise. Any law which is at variance with the socio-economic circumstances will fail. We know as a matter of fact that there is no serious housing policy being financed by the Lagos State government. "Thirdly and lastly, there is need for us to do our investigation, make the necessary inquiries, set up a panel to look at this problem, and come up with a report that will kind of strike a balance between the interest of the landlord and the tenant, rather than a law being promulgated to enforce what is not enforceable. The issue of rent control in Lagos state has never worked and it will not work," said Mr Smith. Link |

Or at least that I have seen so far proclaim his bigotry publicly. How on earth are the #1 bigot in Nigeria and his supporters going to then accuse anyone else of bigotry? Deep, deep hypocrisy. (black) Pot calling the (silvery-gray) aluminum kettle black. I won't ever address this silly argument again. You'll have to do better than that.[/quote]How is he a bigot ? can one be bigoted against his own people as well ![]() |
Sun of god:I am glad and truly happy that things are coming together in eastern part of Nigeria. God bless the eastern nigeria and Nigeria at large my point is that we are talking of priority and how urgent things need to be done. A lot of eastern people die in the thousands just because of ONE ROAD that connects ore to benin Now is it not more sensible for that road to be done first before other roads (FG roads) How many lives has the onitsha road claimed when compare to benin-ore road ? that is just my argument here. |

Amid lingering tension in Ogbunka and Owerrezuka in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, the scene of recent communal clash which saw neighbours turning foes, Senator Andy Uba (Anambra South), at the weekend, visited the communities to sue for peace. The two communities had been turned into a war zone following the burning of houses, killing and maiming of defenceless villagers and raping of hapless maidens. The situation forced the deployment of policemen and soldiers to the communities. About 300 persons were reportedly arrested. The cause of the communal war is said to be an expanse of land with green lush vegetation, ,which separates Ogbunka and Owerrezukala. According to sources, the high concentration of stones in commercial quantity in the disputed area to which both communities are laying claim is the problem. The land known as Ikpaobu has been in dispute since 1940 and reports claim that at least 1,000 lives have been lost to recurring disturbances. Uba was in the two communities at the weekend for an on-the-spot assessment of the destruction caused by the latest incident. Addressing representatives of the communities, the senator expressed unhappiness at the situation, saying they all have a lot to gain through amicable resolution of all issues. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/09/amid-tension-andy-uba-visits-anambra-warring-communities/ |

good work but I think it is not the priority right now the Niger bridge is getting weaker by the day and so is the thrid mainland bridge because of lack of maintance also a very important rroad that has killed thousands is the benin-ore road this are the more pressing issue rather than onitsha-enugu road |
Fg Mr Mike Onolememen Starts The Reconstruction Of Onitsha-enugu Road The Federal Government has started the reconstruction of the Onitsha-Awka-Enugu Highway. This is in fulfillment of its promise to the South-East before the April 2011 General Elections. The Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, said this in Onitsha yesterday while inspecting the extent of damage on the road. Onolememen said the first phase of the project would cover the Head-Bridge junction to Upper Iweka, both in Onitsha. He also added that palliative work would be done on the parts of the road leading to the Onitsha-Owerri road. Onolememen said the contractor handling the road had been fully mobilised for the first phase and its palliative work; while work on the other phases would follow later. "As I can see, this road is critical and deplorable as Gov. Peter Obi described it when he visited me in my office. "The President has directed for work to commence and it has started already," Onolememen said. The Minister also announced that work would start commence on the second Niger Bridge as President Jonathan had ordered. "Mr President is committed to the second Niger Bridge Project and would want to deliver it before he leaves office as he has promised," he said. Onolememen complained about the attitude of traders who make use of the service lane of the road for trading and mounting of bill-boards. "The contractor must work with the controller of work and the state authorities to get these people and these bill-boards out for the reconstruction to continue without hitches," he said. Mr Hishem Gosayni, the Area Manager of Consolidated Construction Company (CCC), the contractor in charge of the road, said the company had been mobilised to continue work, assuring that it would deliver a quality job within the time frame. Hishem appealed to Onitsha residents and the Anambra state government to co-operate with the company, to enable it delivers on schedule. In his response, the Anambra state governor, Peter Obi thanked the minister for facilitating work on the road, "especially at the beginning of the road, which is considered to be critical". "I will assure you Sir, that I will personally supervise this project myself," Obi said. http://dailytimes.com.ng/article/reconstruction-onitsha-enugu-road-begins |
