Friday, August 6, 2010 Enugu police command dismantles checkpoints Agency Reporter The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr Danazumi Doma, has ordered the immediate dismantling of all road blocks mounted with logs of wood. http://odili.net/news/source/2010/aug/6/816.html The News Agency of Nigeria reported on Thursday that Doma's order, which was issued on Wednesday, was complied with, especially along the Enugu-Awka route where there were 11 checkpoints. Apart from the entry point from Anambra State at Ugwuoba and SARS Junction in Enugu, Enugu State, all the checkpoints mounted with used tyres, bags of sand and wood narrowing the road into ditches to force vehicles to a standstill, have been removed. However, the two joint police/military checkpoints on the route were still intact, but manned only by soldiers this time around. Motorists, especially commercial bus and articulated vehicle drivers interviewed said they were happy with the development. A commercial bus driver, Mr Emeka Nweze, said, "I used to spend N350 to sort out policemen for each return trip from Onitsha to Enugu.'' An articulated vehicle driver, who pleaded anonmymity, said, "I give N100 at each of the stops." He said any failure to comply with demands by policemen attracted endless delay. The Police Public Relations Officer for the Enugu State command, Mr Ebere Amarizu, said that the order did not suggest total pullout from the affected areas. He said that while all roadblocks mounted with logs of wood had been dismantled from Enugu State forever because they constituted an eyesore, those at the entry and exit points into Enugu State would remain. He added that the entry and exit points' checkpoints would now be mounted with drums painted in police colours and manned by 15-men each for enhanced surveillance. |
My abductors were all graduates • Victim reveals the humane side of kidnappers By Kassidy Uchendu, Nsukka Friday, August 6, 2010 A House of Representatives aspirant, Mr. Silas Ifeanyi, had a peculiar encounter with kidnappers recently. He was treated like a king by his captors, “all university graduates,” and released unhurt, without paying any ransom. http://odili.net/news/source/2010/aug/6/515.html On April 13, Ifeanyi, an Onitsha businessman, was going back to Onitsha after spending the weekend in his hometown, Edem, Nsukka Local Government, Enugu State, when he was abducted by kidnappers. They took him to their hideout where he said his captors, all of them university graduates, treated him like a king. “I was treated like a king by the boys and I am surprised to find that they were all graduates,” he told Daily Sun After Ifeanyi’s interaction with his captors, he said he developed a kind of sympathy for them: “After my interaction with the boys, I discovered society has to be largely blamed for this menace and not the boys. I hate criminality in its entirety but what I am saying is that our leaders are to blame largely for not living up to their responsibility to create employment opportunities for the increasing population of young graduates who are turned out in their hundreds of thousands annually.” He said his short stay with his captors did not only remind him of the urgent need for the country to do something to save the youths but also refueled his zeal to serve his people at the House of Representatives. “I was kidnapped on April 13, 2010. It is a criminal offence but the truth is that those who kidnapped me treated me like a king. I had the opportunity to talk with them. I didn’t support what they were doing, but the truth is that, these are graduates, no job, no hope, no future, no direction. They see you with flashy car and feel you are the oppressor and among those responsible for their plight. But I told them that they have made mistake by kidnapping somebody like me. Nevertheless, I condemn kidnapping in its entirety and all ramifications. “If I go to Abuja, I will use my position to open vista of opportunities. I will lobby my colleagues to support my crusade for job creation. What they want is something to be doing to earn a living. It is wicked to be flaunting wealth before these boys while they starve. No constituency office is functional. “Our representatives collect allowance and pocket it. The youths are not greedy. They can even make do with N10,000 job. Somebody told me he approached one of our representatives in Abuja to give him a letter for job, but was turned back on the ground he did not book previous appointment. At last, he was given a letter with watery content by the representative. “The same person approached another representative from Enugu State who gave him a letter which fetched him instant job. It is not a big deal to get a job. It is only because our representatives are selfish and dishonest. There are several scholarships offered by the Federal Government but none of the youths has benefited from it. Why? Those representing us do not have genuine intention about those they are representing. “We are saying we want to bring a change that people can trust. I am not going there to amass wealth. I am comfortable with my income. I have not borrowed any kobo from the banks to run my business chains. So if I go to Abuja, our people, Nsukka people, will benefit. When I say I am doing a constituency water project, people can drink water. Our representatives have no shame.” No ransom “Do you know how many hours I spent with them? I can’t even count in hours because I did not spend up to an hour with them. People count in days, but I can count my own in less than an hour. I was released without paying any kobo to my abductors. I give God the glory because it is strange and sounds incredible. People will ask how someone can be released without ransom to kiddappers? But the simple truth is that I was released without a kobo ransom, without any loss of property. They just handed over to me my car key and I drove to Onitsha.” Service “I want to serve my people to show that everything about representing them is not to amass wealth at their expense. It is unfortunate that the general language of every aspirant is that ‘I am going into politics because, I want to serve my people’. It is unfortunate that my people are being improvised by those representing them. The people have nothing to show for those representing them at Abuja. “They don’t have a feel of the sufferings of those they are representing because they do not interact with them. Our youths are not empowered. There are a lot of federal establishments that offer employments which our youths do not even know exist. This is 2010, but our people are living like those who are in 1910. “Our representatives seize all the constituency projects. You talk of constituency project, they start drilling and at the end of the day, you cannot find water four years after. You have constituency project money and you are building market, but four years after, nobody is trading in the market.” |
So even if their preaching is disturbing others, it is okay as long as they are in a private property? |

Oyo, politics and bloodshed Punch Editorial Board Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo State has lately been in the eye of the storm over allegations that he planned to murder certain prominent indigenes of the state, purportedly to clear the coast for his return as governor in 2011. When the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, raised the alarm recently that Akala was after his life, it was a distress call from unusual quarters. http://odili.net/news/source/2010/aug/5/810.html Few days later, a former governor of the state, Alhaji Lam Adesina, apprised newsmen of a similar threat, thus underlining the severity of the security scare. Many have, however, seen the saga as an irony of sorts. What desperation would make the Chief Security Officer of a state become a major threat to people's lives? Oba Adeyemi had petitioned President Goodluck Jonathan and the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo, alleging that Alao-Akala planned to kill him. He also demanded a probe into the alleged plot. Alaafin claimed that the governor, in collaboration with a prominent businessman in Oyo and a commander of the Special Anti-robbery Squad in the state, had perfected the plan to kill him in his palace. He said the alleged plot failed because the collaborating senior police officer backed out of the plot at the last minute and revealed it to him. Adesina, in his own statement, alleged plan to eliminate him and some prominent leaders of the Action Congress. "With the intelligence report at my disposal, I reliably gathered that Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala had concluded plans to kill me and some AC leaders in the state for him to realise his second term ambition," the former governor alleged. Alao-Akala has so far debunked the allegations, describing them as mere fabrications by his detractors. It is also noteworthy that the governor has pledged to waive his immunity for an unfettered investigation into the matter. "Maybe they did something that they want to cover up and so they threw up that allegation so as to escape investigation, " he said. Notwithstanding its political context, the weighty allegations against the governor should be thoroughly investigated to establish the truth. No doubt, the political division in the state is deepening by the day. Alaafin, a frontline monarch, is believed to be deeply involved in "who gets what, when and how" in the state. When the going was good, the paramount ruler hailed Alao-Akala's emergence as the state's number one citizen. This relationship lasted until a clash of interests occurred. But must anybody resort to killings to settle political scores? It will be foolhardy to ignore the alarm from these prominent indigenes of the state as the 2011 general election draws closer. The police and other security agencies should not be caught napping. Oyo State has an unenviable profile in unresolved political killings. Former Attorney-General, Chief Bola Ige, was murdered in his Bodija residence in Ibadan in December 2001. Earlier, Alhaja Suliat Adedeji had been killed by unknown gunmen in the city. On September 14, 2007, the lawmaker representing Lagelu/Akinyele constituency, Oyo State, in the House of Representatives, Mr. Segun Oladimeji, a.k.a. Segelu, was cut down in a hail of bullets at Ejioku, near Iwo. On March 24, 2008, a former Permanent Secretary in Oyo State, Ademola Oyadeyi, was killed right inside his petrol station in Ibadan by unknown hoodlums. Even the Alaafin's domain, Oyo town, has had its own share of unresolved murder cases. Since the celebrated murder of the former Ashipa of the town, Chief Amuda Olorunosebi, in November 1992, many mysterious killings have occurred in the town. On January 1, 2005, a prominent medical doctor in Oyo State and a member of the state Hospital Management Board, Dr. Phillip Ogunniran, was killed by assassins in Oyo town. One Rasheed Salawu, otherwise called Atingishi, was also murdered in similar circumstances in the community. On March 4, 2010, for instance, the Peoples Democratic Party's chairman for Atiba Local Government Area, Azeez Adegbile, was gruesomely murdered while preparing for a major political event within the town. A distraught Alao-Akala then disagreed with those who claimed that Adegbile's killing was masterminded by politicians. Alao-Akala, who came close to mentioning names said that "political leeches" that were profiting from political crisis were responsible for the murder. Even the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adisa Bolanta, was hard pressed to clarify his position on the likely killers of Adegbile when he said,", It may not necessarily be politicians that did it, but we insist that it was politically motivated. We are still investigating." Sadly, despite assurances from the police that they are "on top of the situation" and that "no stone will be left unturned," none of the killers has been found. While the police and other security agencies should thoroughly investigate the alarm by both Oba Adeyemi and Lam Adesina, this should also be an opportunity for them to probe all the past killings in the state with a view to ending the impunity that emboldened the assassins. Killings and threats of murder have not stopped because perpetrators of such crimes have always escaped justice. Let the killers in Oyo State be exposed and punished for their crimes, notwithstanding their positions. |
Man kills teenager, ties him to tree Simon Utebor with agency report A 28-year-old man has been arraigned before an Ebute-Meta Magistrate's Court, Lagos, for allegedly killing a teenager and tying him to a tree. http://odili.net/news/source/2010/aug/5/830.html The accused, Mr. Sonayon Kusa, was alleged to have killed Nurudeen Adedimeji by giving him fist blow all over his body, resulting in his death. Kusa was said to have after killing the deceased, tied him to a tree in his compound, ostensibly to make it look as if the deceased committed suicide. But luck ran out on him when Adedimeji's decomposing body started to ooze profusely, thereby drawing the attention of the neigbours who raised the alarm and informed the police. Police subsequently arrested the suspect and after investigation charged him to court. The charge sheet obtained by our correspondent on Wednesday said the murder took place on June 29 in the evening hours on Wevi Street, Ikoga Zebbe, Badagry, Lagos. The one-count charge sheet reads, "That you Sonayon Kusa, male, 28, on June 29, 2010, at about 5pm at Wevi Street, Ikoga Zebbe, Badagry, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District did unlawfully kill one Nurudeen Adedimeji, male, by giving him fist blow all over his body. "Thereafter, you tied his body to a tree and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap. 17 Vol. II laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003." The Magistrate, Mrs. K.O. Doja-Ojo, did not take the plea of the accused but remanded him in prison custody pending the advice of the state's Director of Public Prosecution. She adjourned the matter to September 10, 2010 for further hearing. Meanwhile, the Lagos Police Command on Tuesday said it had arrested a member of a five-man robbery gang that raided the Christ Chosen Church of God on Friday. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba, said that the gang invaded the church at Alafia, Orile area of Lagos at about 2.10am during a prayer vigil. He said during the raid, the ministers and congregation were dispossessed of their valuables including offering, handsets and wrist watches. The police spokesman said that while the operation was going on, a distress call was made to the Orile police station, which immediately responded and stormed the scene. "As soon as the gang was aware of the presence of the police, they opened gun fire, which was returned and one of the suspects was arrested while four others escaped,'' Mba said. He said one locally- made revolver pistol and some ammunition were recovered from the suspect. He said that the suspect had made useful statement that would help the police to track down those at large. Mba said the case had been transferred to the state CID, Panti, Yaba, for further investigation. |
AHEAD OF 2011 ELECTIONS: Fear of kidnappers grips S/East politicians *Many run into hiding Written by Sam Nwaoko and Dare Adekanmbi Thursday, August 5, 2010 THE fear of kidnappers is now the beginning of wisdom for politicians in the South-East geopolitical zone, as most of them have reportedly gone into hiding for fear of being abducted as the nation http://odili.net/news/source/2010/aug/5/601.html moves closer to the 2011 elections. Investigations by the Nigerian Tribune revealed that there has been a lull in political activities in the region, making the tempo very slow. A former deputy speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr. Uzo Ughamadu, attributed the lull to fear of being kidnapped expressed by politicians in the zone. The South-East region is notorious for the activities of kidnappers who had been abducting eminent Nigerians to extract ransom from the victims' relations. Lately, the chairman of the Lagos Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr. Wahab Oba and four others were kidnapped in Abia State, while returning from the national executive meeting of the union in Akwa Ibom State. Cash and other valuables were lost to the abductors in the incident. The state of insecurity in the zone had been a source of concern to federal and state governments, necessitating concerted efforts at tackling the menace head on. Following the abduction of the journalists, the Abia State governor, Chief Theodore Orji, had suspended a traditional ruler, whose community was a black spot for the unlawful act. He threatened to depose others found to be aiding and abetting kidnappers. Also, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo, literally moved the Force Headquarters to the state, to smoke the abductors of the journalists out of their hideouts. Just on Monday, a retired Brigadier-General was said to have killed one of the kidnappers who tried to abduct him in Enugu State. Ughamadu, while speaking with journalists on Wednesday, said that kidnapping fever had gripped politicians in the zone, creating a dull political atmosphere. According to him, "politicking involves exchange of money and gifts. If these people see you sharing money or even making promises, they will pick you the next hour. "Kidnap fever is all over South-East zone. My niece, who was kidnapped and held captive for over six weeks, was just released two days ago," he said. The politician, who is currently an assemblyman but eyeing a House of Representatives seat in the 2011 polls, advocated a holistic approach in combating the crime in the zone. He admitted that the police had been unable to arrest the ugly trend, adding that there was no enough manpower to curtail the excesses of the abductors. Said he, "there must be a holistic approach to the problem because I don't see the police having enough manpower to give some of us vying for elective positions next year individual security." The police authorities in Abuja recently deployed additional 10,000 policemen in the region to stem the spate of abduction. Another strategy used by the police was inter-state mass transfer of policemen in the wake of the problem. President Goodluck Jonathan had met with governors from the zone, urging them to prioritise security of lives and properties in the South-East. Jonathan had also during his maiden presidential media chat recently, disclosed that kidnapping had been developed into a thriving business in the area. He hinted that prominent lawyers were involved in negotiating ransom for the abductors. Governor Ikedi Ohakim of Imo State had, during his recent visit to Lagos State, explained away the root cause of the act of kidnapping as the collapse of investors' wealth in the stock market. |

Nigeria's iron lady takes on fraudsters By Caroline Duffield BBC News, Lagos Arunma Oteh, the woman tasked with the unenviable job of policing Nigeria's financial world, has a warm smile and a piercing stare. "Wash sales; market rigging; pumping and dumping shares," she says listing the inventive and multi-layered abuses rampant in Nigeria's capital market. "Any infraction will be punished," she told the BBC. Ms Oteh, Nigeria's Securities and Exchange Commission boss, took up the post in January, bringing with her a tough surveillance and enforcement regime. "We expect to charge the 200 entities and individuals involved," the financial regulator says quietly. "We will file civil charges, and criminal charges, where necessary." Name and shame Last year, as major banks veered close to collapse, the government was forced into a $4bn (£2.67bn) bailout of nine lenders. https://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/48220000/jpg/_48220440_dsc_1551.jpg Ms Oteh Accountant Aruna Bawa The central bank governor carried out a forensic cull - the so-called "Friday massacre" - sacking management teams at eight banks. As the stock market fell, it became apparent some stockbrokers were involved in the scandal - collaborating in abuses ranging from insider share dealing to market manipulation and share price fixing. Now Ms Oteh wants illegally gained profits made on the stock market to be "disgorged". "We will restitute [restore lost money to] investors," she says. "Local and international investors need to understand that things have changed." A confidential US report details malpractice at the Nigerian Stock Exchange Working closely with the US financial authorities, Ms Oteh plans to name and shame the individuals and finance companies that contributed to a $50bn crash. Many people have lost their life savings. "They [investment companies] spoke to me eloquently, but now I realise there were sharp practices," says Aruna Bawa, an accountant who lost nearly three quarters of his retirement plan. "I should have been slowing down at my age. Now I am forced back to work," he says. "I struggle long hours to try to rebuild my savings." Insolvent stockbrokers In April, a team from the US Securities and Exchange Commission compiled a confidential report detailing lax oversight at the Nigerian Stock Exchange and the financial regulators. It details cases of bribery inside the Stock Exchange. Continue reading the main story “ Start Quote Oteh faces severe resistance. It's coming from very influential, powerful individuals” Economist in Nigeria The report describes "dysfunctional" enforcement, "complicated and entrenched governance problems", "clear instances of insider trading and market manipulation that resulted in no action", and "woefully inadequate" surveillance. And it says between 60% and 75% of Nigeria's stockbrokers are technically insolvent. Ms Oteh agrees that regulation has not been tight enough in the past. But a spokesman for the Nigerian Stock Exchange declined to comment on the report. "It is very likely there are huge losses still to come," says economist Bismarck Rewane, of Financial Derivatives, a finance research and analysis firm. "The day that ordinary investors try to retrieve their assets, and find them contaminated, will be an unpleasant day." 'Laughable' And repairing the damage is not easy. Insiders in the financial world describe an ugly fight-back aimed at Ms Oteh and her plans for tougher oversight and more transparency. "Oteh faces severe resistance," said one economist, asking not to be named. "It's coming from very influential, powerful individuals. It is a patronage-intensive society, and their influence extends well into government." Just months into the job, Ms Oteh faces a legal action, questioning her qualifications. "It's laughable," says Ms Oteh, a former vice-president of the African Development Bank with a Harvard MBA. "It shows they're really desperate to try and undermine reform. "It can only be people who are desperate, who are looking for ways to scuttle reform." But she says she will not give up. "What gives me comfort is that the President, Goodluck Jonathan, is behind us. It's what he believes in. "That makes me even more determined." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10464725 |
