Thank God for this thread, very timely. Now my issue, my son clocked 6months 5days ago. We did ebf but a week b4 he clocked 6months, i introduced water and homemade pap. Both of which he took very well, infact i was surprised because i was just testing the waters. When he was about 5months, i tried introducing formula to him in a bottle, which he absolutely rejected. Now we struggle with barely 30ml of formula. I still breastfeed actively.

For the past two days, it has been a struggle to get him to take the pap. Just a few spoons and he rejects it and this is someone that finishes the whole bowl. I tried another cereal, same thing. What do i do?

But reading thru your post, i see i have other options to choose from. Which is safe as a weaning meal because I'm sure he is too early for all that food combo. I also need to get a blender for him, so i can try the purees. I don't want an underfed child.

Lastly, is milo safe for him?

Milo is a no no. at least not until he is at least above 12 months

all he need is either breast milk or formular for over 6 month aka follow on milk.

Regarding the foods, start one at a time before you begin combining.

For example, you can introduce only carrot puree today, maybe sweetpotato puree tomorrow this will help you know if he has any allergic reactions to any food that is new. after a week or so you can then mix carrot and sweet potato.

you gradually build-up like that.

Today's breakfast. For the whole family.

Oats with raisins and banana.

Add raisins either whole or chopped to oats before cooking.
Add chopped / sliced bananas after cooking.

Add milk

Serve.

Great for the whole family. No need for sweeters.

For babies under 1 year, chop raisins before adding or blend afterwards if required - add formula

For babies above 1 year - you may want to chop the raisins before adding add mormal full cream milk.

For older children and adults, whole raisins are fine. Normal milk, you can also add a spoon of ground flaxseed to make itn extra healthy

Have a blessed sunday and a great week ahead

How to completely stop your baby from breastfeeding may be a little challenging for some mothers and for others it’s just a walk in the park. Weaning doesn’t have to be difficult, it has to be properly planned in order to make a smooth transition for both mother and child.

When is the best time to start weaning?

World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of an infant’s life thereafter infants should receive complementary food with continued breastfeeding up to 2years of age or beyond. However when to start weaning your child should be a personal decision. When babies are introduced to formula or solids the weaning process starts naturally and gradually and that often happens at age six months or earlier.

Some children initiate weaning themselves, by gradually losing interest in breastfeeding- often gets distracted while nursing and would refuse to nurse again even after the distraction had passed, some overtime prefers other foods and is fascinated at the site of it than at nursing. Some mothers may observe such child and use that opportunity to completely wean while some children would naturally stop breastfeeding because they feel other foods give them what they want.

Mothers also initiate weaning especially mom’s returning to work or moms who feel they are ready. But the question often asked- is your child ready? Weaning has to be a two-way thing, mother and child have to be ready before a child is weaned. However, if a child is not ready and mother is ready, then the mother should take it gradually by reducing nursing time and giving the baby a lot of distraction in food form.

Choose a time that feels right for you (it’s a personal decision) and your baby when you eventually decide to wean. Having your child taken far away from you as possible is not the best approach to weaning as this may be traumatic for the child. All children eventually wean whether they do it at their own pace or mother initiated.

When not to Wean

1. Don’t wean when the baby is sick: This is a time the baby needs nutrition, comfort, and reassurance and they find it during nursing. For older babies who have been introduced to solids, they often reject these foods and prefer to nurse.
2. Don’t wean when you are under stress: it’s in the best interest of the both mother and child to wean when they are emotionally stable. Avoid weaning when there is a situation that may lead to stress like preparing for a long journey or family relocation. Such occasions are not favorable for a smooth transition.
3. Don’t wean when you feel it may affect your child negatively: If you have concerns and doubts about weaning your baby then you should talk to your Doctor about it.
4. Don’t wean abruptly when you discover you are pregnant with another baby: I interviewed some mothers and I found out that some who had been pregnant at some point while they still had an infant ended breastfeeding abruptly just on discovering they were pregnant with another baby. It’s a Myth that breastfeeding while pregnant hurts both the fetus and the breastfed baby. Yes, you can continue to nurse while pregnant depending on your medical history according to HealthyChildren.Org (American Academy of pediatrics parenting website). However, talk to your Doctor about weaning when you discover you are pregnant with another child.

Tips to Weaning

1. Reduce nursing time: Reduce the time it takes for your baby to nurse if he usually takes ten minutes try five minutes and see how he responds to it. Complement with healthy snacks like milk, fruit- banana or his solid foods.
2. Reduce the feed: Skip his feeds one at a time by offering another food instead of breastmilk. But make it a gradual process. If he usually feeds 5times a day on breastmilk, reduce it 3 times.
Serve breast milk in cups: You can express and serve in a cup or bottle for your baby. It helps minimize nursing.
3. Nigerian mothers rub bitter leaf on their nipples just at the time of nursing so naturally, some baby’s reject both breast and milk because it has a bitter taste. While it may work for some it may not work for others. Some baby’s still nurse with the bitter taste until it wears off.
4. Keeping baby far away from you: Some mothers keep their toddlers away from them like making the nanny spend the weekend with grandma. Though this method may work but it may be traumatizing for the child and would rather be a crude way of transiting.

Whichever way you choose to wean, it’s your choice but it’s to start slowly to avoid engorgement. In such case, you apply cold packs to your breast to reduce pain and swelling.

Before you take any medication discuss with your doctor. Breastmilk dries up within few days to weeks so you don’t need any drug to help you do that; it’s a natural phenomenon.

In addition to milk (milk is important for the 1st one year), there are plenty of hassle free, affordable, highly nutritious home made meals you can give your baby. All you have to do is have them puréed and you get the same ogi consistency.

Sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, carrots, green peas, runner beans, sweet corn, chicken, fish, beef, sweet peppers, avocado, banana, broccoli, Apple, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach (although I introduced this around 12months), etc.

For example, this is a very simple recipe: boil Irish potatoes (a good source of potassium, copper, vitamin C, manganese, phosphorus, niacin, dietary fiber, and pantothenic acid) and chicken breast or any boneless chicken (very high in protein, vitamins B, B6, B12, C, D, E, niacin, and magnesium).

Let it cool and toss in your blender. Blend it till it's smooth with no lumps. Add water in bits till you get the required consistency. Add a little sunflower oil. Feed your baby and keep the rest in your fridge or freezer.

I never gave my baby pap, or any of the various pap combinations. Whether corn, millet or guinea corn, with soya, with crayfish, or any other variation.

We only did formular and mashed/ purreed foods from 6 months plus, so there are LOADS of stuff you can give. Including modifications of the normal food you eat at home.

In fact i gave pap for the first time like 3 weeks ago. Now my dd eats well and takes almost everything but she absolutely hated it. so i dont understand why so many people reccommend it.?

Now that we are one.... ( yippeee!!!) I have brought out the Nido milk. And sippe cup. I have given myself one month to phase out all feeding bottles.

You can mash or puree almost anything. You can start with sweet potato before you introduce irish potato and yam.

Let me give you a list of some of my tried and tested menus..... yes i kept a record of our meals and combinations. And will keep the book like a treasure. .

●beans and ripe plantain pottage ( no oil, and pass through a wire mesh sieve with a spoon to remove the skins)
●Avocado and egg yolk
●Yam and fish with small butter ( with spinach and/or garden egg as an option)
●Ripe plantain and fish/meat/poultry
●Pureed mango, banana or other fruit.( either plain or with baby rice to add bulk)
●amala with blended okra soup with fish
●sweet corn, beetroot and chicken
● yam pottage ( remove before adding oil and pepper and maggi)
● Beans and sweet potato.
●carrot, sweet corn and cabbage purree wih small knob of butter.
● Pasta with mince meat sauce ( or stew with meat- blend afterwards just omit pepper and spices.- you can make her own stew/ sauce seperately and combine with "soggy rice or pasta. ) i also find mixing pasta and rice with maybe carrot/sweet corn/other veggie puree help with not making it too tomato-ey.

Note: You may need to add some water while pureeing or blending to get the right texture. If it is too dry, your dd is likely to refuse it.

Dont be scared of adding too much water... if it turns out too watery, add a bit of baby rice or boiled irish potato to thicken it back up. It wont change the taste.

So dearie, there is more to weaning than frisco gold and pap!
Good luck.

Please sabi mama's, My ds sweats a lot even when the temperature seems normal, also bn trying to give him baby foods since we were ebf, but he doesn't seem to like it. I dnt know what to do.
P.S He is 5months +

Do not expect him to finish a full bowl, he is learning to go from sucking to taking food from a spoon. It is a
Skill that he needs to learn. If you are right handed and I tell you to write perfect calligraphy with your left hand, or by holding the brush with your teeth, will you be able to do it the first 100 times .....NO. So the same for a baby, anything new that they do will need practise. feeding solids inclusive.

just s few spoons initially is ok. At that age and considered a success. Keep offering. Offer variety, sweet, savoury, fruit, veg. As with adults babies too have their preferences in tastes. But never indulge him on only one kind of food or you are setting yourself up for drama.

And no EBF is not a reason for picky eating. At 5+months it is highly premature to make that conclusion and you will just put undue pressure on your self.

Relax!

Good morning mama's. Happy Sunday!!

Mama's that have travelled for days with babies 6 months upward, please how did you handle their food?
We will be travelling for a function and staying in the hotel and am trying to figure out how to make and feed LO. LO doesn't take cereal so it makes it difficult, formula is sometimes but does well with purees, solids and pap which will be difficult to prepare.

Secondly, where can o get jar food 7m+ in Lagos? Most store stocked up purees and porridge I need proper food.

Find out if the hotel have a fridge in the room. Or You may be able to ask them to put it in the hotel kitchen frigde, u may be lucky as people seem to be nicer to requests involving babies just pack it well in as good container that seals well and pop it into a good zip lock bag. Label it per day if you can so if you ask them for it, they can just bring you the "Tuesday: bag

If they have a fridge or agree to store it for you. you can make your own food from home, freeze in small single portion containers and travel with it in a freezer bag.
When you get to the hotel put everything in the fridge.

When you want to feed, defrost and then use hot water to warm up. As Akorkor said get a small travel kettle and a small bowl to pour the water into before you put thefood to warm up.

You can also take things like banana and avocado which can be easy to make on the go. You can mix this with a spoon or 2 of baby rice to bulk it up.

You can buy eggs at your location and boil in thr kettle and mash with the avocado or with some milk.

You can also take potatoes and boil in the kettle as well. Keep the skin on When boiling in the kettle

To use the kettle to boil food, add water with the potato or egg, boil it once, let it sit in the hot water for like 5 mins, remove about half the water, add more cold water and repeat a few more times. Eggs will take at least 2 boils to ensure it is hard boiled, for potatoes ensure it is a bit small. You will need to boil at least 3 or 4 times to cook thoroughly.

Or you can boil the potato from home with skin on. Put in the fridge and to warm up just pop it in the kettle and boil a couple of times.

Getting proper jar foods does help. You should be able to get in a good supermarket . Sorry I don't know which ones, I am sure other mamas will assist.

How this helps.

Good evening, sorry for the delayed response - it depends on what you are getting. typically we recommend 1 nappy cover per 2 - 4 inserts depending on the age of your baby. and we usually do 1 cover + 3 inserts as a standard pack which equates to 3 nappy changes.

Newborn nappies start at N5,400 for 1 cover + 3 inserts

the Birth to potty nappies start at N8,950 for 1 cover+ 3 inserts

however you can pick and choose how many inserts you want per cover.

I will give you a mention on the cloth nappy thread, all our contact details are there.
Cheers
