Car TalkRe: Why You Need To Run A Scan On Your Vehicle Before Repairs by AlphaT1(m): 6:59pm On Sep 01, 2016
xier:
Do you scan cars and if yes, where I your location and how much? I have had this 'maintenance required' on my dash board for more than a year so will like to check it out
You didn't reset your oil sensor for next service due date when you change oil so it will keep displaying that. Anytime you change oil &filter you need to reset the sensor, Maintenance Reqd would disappear.

To reset the sensor (on camry 2010), don't knw ur car.
Put Odometer on trip A. Turn off the car. Hold down the odometer button and without putting foot on break push ''start'' button twice (while continuing to hold down the odometer button)

Nairaland GeneralDon't Be Discouraged by AlphaT1(op):
I just feel these few words of encouragement and advice would benefit someone out there.

To aspirants/admission seekers:
Don't go with the crowd. Choose what you love and are interested in, but first harmonize your strengths and interests. If you love Engineering then your strengths should be maths and physics. Don't love engineering when your strength is Biology.

To the Students:
You gotta decide from day one that you are going to graduate with the best result; a first class/distinction. A warrior in a battle front does not entangle himself with other affairs, your primary reason of being a student is to study, make academics your first and best priority and give it your all (don't forget God too).
You would hear different stories from those trying to discourage you, pls don't listen to them, don't let them distract you and avoid anything that is a distraction to your academics. Don't try to be someone else, believe in your self, understand yourself and work in that regard. Don't demonize any lecturer or course, be positive, committed and consistent. Meet other students for help ( and discussions) where you have challenges.

In my 100L orientation programme, I asked what can one do to make first class? The senior students and lecturers all laughed at me sarcastically. The responder said ''nothing is impossible sha, so jst study hard, but I must tell you it's almost impossible here''. I got home and told my dad, he refuted their claim and encouraged me to go for it. The senior students were always making jest of me whenever they saw me.
My first semester 100L result came out with 4.48 GPA and I wasn't happy. The senior students laughed at me more.....I had heard so many stories of the higher you go the tougher it gets so if you don't make atleast 4.7 in 100L, forget it. I told myself that mine would be different and so it was. 4.48 climbed gradually to 4.52 after 5years.
We needed at least a C or a B to pass and the general assumption was that if you don't score at least 18 marks in continuous assessment (CA), consider that course a fail. In 300L I missed a test (due to ill health) and the lecturer refused to give me a make up, I scored 8/10 in the second test and so my total CA was 8/40. My fellow coursemates were already consoling me, but in the end I got a B (in all, only 25% passed).
It's a fact you would meet difficult courses and lecturers but just commit them to God and give it your best.

To applicants/job seekers:
After earning that well deserved excellent grade, the next phase is to prepare for the job market (sounds funny abi). Use your NYSC year to do this. Read interview books, practice GMAT (irrespective of your discipline), I could remember a friend mocking me a night to an aptitude test for a job; guy you d read as if na do or die affair. We wrote it together and it was fair for me and to him it was the most difficult exam he ever wrote. I was invited for oral interview he wasn't. I eventually got the job. Ignore those trying to discourage you! Hadwork pays. Practice English Q&As (e.g G.R.E), read current affairs, read about corporations, firms, people (e.g Steve jobs, Dangote, Chinua Achebe etc), places, etc. Learn how to write essays, how to do group discussions (e.g make contributions during discussions in CDS).
After my interview with a multinational that I went for training but never resumed, they were so impressed that they offered to give me accommodation as an extra benefit. I went for another interview with a federal hospital, right there on the table, the CMD collected my mobile number. After answering three questions, the CMD asked me who was my godfather (through whom did I submit my application)? I said nobody. He then said ''from today I am your godfather, give me your mobile number''. I got the job eventually but never resumed. Preparation indeed meets opportunities! He who fails to prepare and plan, plans to fail!
I went for an interview in Unilag for assistant lecturer position, I didn't have masters, there were people with masters there. I am not from southwest and I didn't know anybody there. We were 18 that were shortlisted and we all entered same time to face the panel. We sat on a row and they asked us questions (in three rounds) from 1st to the 18th person, anytime one fails it becomes a bonus to the next person, if he/she doesn't get it, it goes to the next applicant in that order. I was selected eventually, but didn't resume.

To the working class:
Be diligent and take your work serious. Develop yourself, humble yourself and learn the work. Respect your senior and junior colleagues. Just do the right thing, you never can tell who's watching you. Frank Nweke Jr picked one of his diligent colleagues (as a civil servant) to be his SA when he became minister, the said junior colleague is not from SE and never knew that someone was taking note of his commitment, diligence and hardwork. It paid in a way he could hardly believe it was real life or a dream! A senior colleague included my name to serve on a planning committee (as member; just to sitdown and look), the committee sat only twice and the allowance was 50K. You know what he told me? ''After all this donkey work you do here you deserve some reward''.

Above all acknowledge God first, then be at peace with all men. Treat everyone fairly irrespective of tribe, religion, party, and status.

Remain blessed.

common are u telling me paracetamol has no alternatives hav u heard of aspirin, ibruprofen, acetimophen.
Hahhahaha, that's why I said you are not informed, just don't comment on what you have limited knowledge in. Acetaminophen is another scientific name for paracetamol (mostly used in the U.S).
Aspirin and Ibuprofen are NSAIDs and not paracetamol substitutes. They are analgesics (pain killers) with very little anti-pyretic effect. No doctor in his right senses would ordinarily start giving you NSAIDs for pyrexia. Aspirin and Ibuprofen are not good in ulcer patients, asthmatics, infants etc. Paracetamol is not contra-indicated in the above conditions. I am using simple plain language so you would understand.
It is because you are in Nigeria where everything goes, if not only trained professionals handle drug matters overseas.
EducationRe: PHARMACY: The Most Difficult And Lucrative Medical Course by AlphaT1(m):
Victurh:
Pharmacy is a 5yr course+ 1yr internship+ 1yr Nysc. Any student who wishes to study pharmacy must first of all love chemistry!. And must be very good in phy maths bio.
Pharmacy is a course dat has a whole faculty dedicated to it alone (faculty of pharmacy) and comprises of five branches and one unit;
- Clinical pharmacy and pharmacy administration
- Pharmaceutical chemistry
- Pharmaceutics
- Pharmacognosy
- Pharmacology
- Drug research and production unit

To be a pharmacist, u must be able to cram. People often said that if u can study pharmacy, u can study medicine conveniently.
The sole work of a pharmacist is to ensure proper dispensation and usage of drugs.
Remember, only pharmacists are licensed to import, dispense and sell drugs.
As a pharmacist, u have career options in
(a). Community pharmacy

1. Ur license is being used by another personnel to get his/ her pharmacy store registered with grants ranging from 500K and above (depending on how big the company is). Why dat amount?. Because using ur license would result into you being the owner of the company and u are d one recognised by PCN as the owner and d risk bearer.
You still have d opportunity to work in d same person's pharmacy company as d chief pharmacist or as a pharmacist in another pharmacy outlet wit a salary of 80K for a start, apart from d grant u were given 4 using ur license, and u can withdraw it after a yr depending on ur agreement.
2. U'll have a registered pharmacy store and u are a boss on ur own, provided u have the money

(a). Industrial pharmacists

1. Pharmacists work as Medical Sales Representatives in National and multi- national pharmaceutical industries/ companies, where you are given a car, laptop (in some) with pay above 100K.
The likes of Neimeth, Roche, Sandoz Norvatis, Emzor, Reckitt benckiser, Gsk and so on are top companies dat employ mainly Pharmacists.
2. Some work as research pharmacists, who are the brains behind the ingredients, testing and correct mixing of the drugs.
3. NAFDAC is majorly for pharmacists, wit some other health workers too, tho

(c). Hospital pharmacy

U work in the pharmacy section of an hospital

Pharmacists deserve all dz pay because they worth it. They went through 'hell' in the Univ. not only them tho. Even medical students often have issues wit pharmacology, which is just one of d key areas of pharmacy.

Above all, Pray!!!. Put God first in all things.

This is not to discourage people in oda fields, all successful people aren't pharmacists.

Every area of life has its own stress, toughness and MONEY too, since nobody came to dz life to suffer.

Peace..
When I filled pharmacy (1st and 2nd choices) in my JAMB form some yrs ago, my dad (of blessed memory) insisted that I must change it to medicine (MBBS), I refused and stood my ground. It wasn’t an easy war. Even though I was an all round excellent student, I had soft spot for chemistry and so I preferred pharmacy to medicine. And I have never regretted that decision.

I graduated with a distinction eventually. My salary as an intern was 139k and I was able to save 800K (for the 12 months). In my NYSC I was posted to a missionary hospital to head a pharmacy dept (of 5 Pharm. Techs and 12 dispensers). I brought a turn around in d dept and was making monthly purchase of over 3million Naira. Jst after two months the MD increased my salary from 50K to 80K with a weekly recharge card allowance of 2K. My house was furnished and equipped with dstv and Internet facility. Four months into service, the MD added to my care the PMCT unit that was being funded by GHAIN and my salary increased to 120K. 6months into service GHAIN absorbed me as their staff and offered me 250K (allowance inclusive). I was able to save upto to 3.5million Naira from service yr. I passed out from NYSC and continued with GHAIN for one yr (earning upto 5mil per annum). When I showed dad my savings, he couldn't believe it. Over 8mil jst one yr after graduation? Wow! You made the right choice son. God bless your choice. I was wrong.

I left GHAIN to go for MSc but lost dad midway and had to go look for work, I got two offers from federal hospitals but rejected both. Got assistant lecturer position with a federal university but turned it down still. Got a multinational with a very good pay and benefits, went for their training but never resumed.
Finally picked up the one I am doing now.

Before my dad passed on, he was convinced that indeed it's good to allow children follow their interest (if such are good). Just guide them as a parent.

Almost all my close friends (from that group of excellent students) in secondary school went for MBBS. We are still friends to date but none of them is yet to achieve 1/2 of what I have been able to achieve within this short period....

Just go for what you love, study hard and make a good grade, prepare and Pray for a good job, be prudent, save well and plan for the future.

God bless.

Multimillionaires for producing drugs like paracetamol or selliing made in china drugs like chemists?
You are uninformed, you knw little about drugs. You regard paracetamol as an ordinary drug, it is not. Infact it has no substitute, it's the only agent in its class. It is a life-saving drug, the best anti-pyretic that no drug has been able to beat. Learn to get informed before commenting on what you have little knowledge in.
If only you have idea of how expensive and time- consuming drug research is, you would appreciate the scientists involved.

Also, selling made in china drugs as u put it, is legal and most encouraged in a developing nation like Nigeria, for those that meet minimum standards. These are generics and are more affordable compared to brands that majority of the population cannot afford.

You are very funny! With all humility, the least grade on my WAEC result was a B3 (4 A's, 2 B2's, and 2 B3's). TOEFL scores of 112 out of 120 (Sept. 2011), IELTS of 8.5 out of 10 (April 2013). My CGPA in a 5-year undergraduate medical course was 4.52 (1st generation federal university), CGPA of 3.8 out of 4.0 in MSc OSH (USA), currently doing an advanced PGD in Public health & Epidemiology. This is not to brag but to let you know a little about me, so you may perhaps have a rethink.

CultureExtended African Family System: Curse Or Blessing? by AlphaT1(op): 12:20pm On Aug 18, 2016
Family is indeed important but this new trend is worrisome!

I know there are many benefits as well as disadvantages of a typical African extended family system. However, this new trend in which pressure is mounted so much on young boys and girls who are trying to grow (make a living) is becoming too rampant now-a-days.

A situation where a young man or lady who's working or doing business and needs to pay his/her bills ( and perhaps settle down too) receives so much financial pressure from family members (and friends) such that it adversely affects his/her growth; is this good for us? How can this trend be corrected?

Dabigbroda:
@OP, first of all don't generalise. You sound so frustrated, if you were not lucky to come in contact with the good ones stop using a blanket description. Some civil servants are corrupt, but stop making it look like good ones are not in the service...

I can bet the op that at a point in time he came in contact with the good civil servants, but because nothing was demanded from him he could not acknowledge that. Now that he will part with some cash it is now a national problem.....

The last time I checked, agencies like ICPC and public complains Commission are still working...
I'm a civil servant and this is my third establishment to work with, I guarantee you that this is a cankerworm in the civil service. No doubt there are good ones but how many? Negligible! The bad ones (that constitute over 90%) have overshadowed the good ones.

It is so bad that even colleagues in same establishment are not spared. For a colleague to do something for you (register a memo, forward a memo for signing, sign a memo, approve a request or permission, effect payment etc) you have to 'shake body'...and all these are already part of their job schedule, not that they are doing you a favour or any extra work.

I once met a girl that was trafficked to russia to be a slutt..
She confessed that she knew what she was going into. Matter of fact, she said she misses it there cos they make more money there than in Nigeria.

Anyway, i am sure most of them saw that the life wasn't what they expected.

Why would the EFCC extradite her? All the numerous crimes that British companies like shell committed in Nigeria, yet they have never for one day held them accountable.
Britian would never extradite their citizen to Nigeria NO MATTER THE CRIME!!
