PhonesSamsung To Appeal $1bn Damages Payment To Apple by alstacs(op): 2:26am On Aug 26, 2012
Samsung to appeal after $1bn Apple award in US case
9 hours ago
From BBC news

Apple and Samsung make the bestselling smartphones in the market
Samsung says it will appeal against a US court ruling that the South Korean giant stole designs from Apple to make smartphones and computer tablets.

The jury in San Jose, California ordered Samsung to pay Apple $1.05bn (£665m) in damages.

In response, Samsung accused Apple of using US patent laws to try to dominate the smartphone market.

Analysts say the ruling is one of the most significant in a global battle over intellectual property.

In recent weeks, a court in South Korea ruled that both technology firms had copied each other, while a British court threw out claims by the US company that Samsung had infringed its copyright.

But the year-long US case has involved some of the biggest damages claims.

'Monopoly'

Samsung described Friday's decision as "a loss for the American consumer".

"It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices," the firm said.

The statement added that it was "unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners".

Apple, however, said it applauded the court "for finding Samsung's behaviour wilful and for sending a loud and clear message that stealing isn't right".

It said it intended to seek injunctions to block US sales of Samsung products at a follow-up hearing on 20 September

The two firms account for more than half of global smartphone and tablet computer sales.

The nine-person jury at the federal court in San Jose, California had to consider 700 questions about each side's claim that its rival had infringed its intellectual property.

It deliberated for less than three days before coming to a unanimous decision, rejecting all of Samsung's claims and upholding five of Apple's allegations, including:

Some of Samsung's handsets, including its Galaxy S 4G model, infringed Apple's design patents for the look of its iPhone including the system it uses to display text and icons
All the disputed Samsung devices had copied Apple's "bounce-back response", which makes lists jump back as if yanked by a rubber band
Several Samsung devices incorporated Apple's facility allowing users to zoom into text with a tap of a finger
Apple had wanted $2.5bn in damages. Samsung had sought $519m.

It may also seek to use this ruling to block other devices powered by Google's Android software that it believes replicate elements of its user-interface, including current models by Samsung as well as other firms.

CHANNELS’ Deji Bademosi quits after clash with John Momoh

Premium Times
Published: August 25,2012
By Ben Ezeamalu

Multiple award winning TV journalist, and one of the nation’s most talented broadcast journalists, Deji Bademosi, has resigned his appointment with Channels Television over what sources described as “irreconcilable differences” with the Chairman of the station, John Momoh.

Mr. Bademosi, who was Head of the television’s Political Desk, tweeted on Friday that he had quit his position at the station.

“My time with Channels Television has now ended. Looking to new challenges,” Mr. Bademosi, a Mass Communication graduate from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, tweeted on Friday evening.

Both Mr. Bademosi and CHANNELS are reluctant to speak on the resignation of a reporter  who won several laurels for self and station.

When contacted on the phone Saturday, Mr. Bademosi, who was also Channels TV’s Head of Reportorial Team, said he’d rather not talk about the matter.

“I can only confirm that I resigned on Friday,” he said. “I don’t  want to say anything more because I remain grateful to CHANNELS for providing me the platform to showcase my skills.”

Mr. Momoh too confirmed the reporter’s departure. ”What’s wrong with someone resigning? Mr. Momoh told PREMIUM TIMES. “He’s tired of working here and has gone on to something else. It’s okay.”

Sources, however, say that the relationship between Mr. Bademosi, who had spent almost a decade at the organization, and Mr. Momoh has strained lately.

It was gathered that the last straw was when the management issued a directive, earlier in the week, that editors must get approval from Mr. Momoh, before assigning reporters to any assignment.

“The management ruled that editors must contact the chairman wherever he is in the world before assigning reporters to any assignment,” a highly placed official told PREMIUM TIMES Saturday.

“Things haven’t been rosy between him and the Channels management,” another source said.

“Before then, what led to the memo was a clash between the chairman and Deji.

“Deji had assigned a reporter to go and cover a PDP (Peoples’ Democratic Party) press conference in Ogun State,” the source added.

The press briefing was organized by the Bayo Dayo faction of the PDP, who are at loggerheads with the group led by former president Olusegun Obasanjo.

“While at the assignment, the personal assistant to the chairman called the reporter and asked him to leave the assignment and return to the office.

“The reporter refused,” the source said.

However, after the story, which had been approved by Mr. Bademosi and the controller of news, had been lined up in the bulletin for broadcast; the chairman’s assistant showed up again.

“The PA said that the chairman directed that the tape of the assignment be handed over to him, but they (Mr. Bademosi and the controller of news) refused.

“The chairman then personally came down and ordered that the tape be given to him. He confiscated the tape.

“Deji said that he could not work in an environment where editors do not have powers and must get approval from the chairman before any event is covered,” said the source, who added that Mr. Momoh attends editorial meeting and talks to editors “like babies.”

Mr. Momoh declined to comment on his directive that editors must seek his approval before detailing reporters to cover events.

“I think you should contact the director of news on that,” he said. ”I am the chairman of the company. I think you need to talk to the controller of news on that.”

But when one of the station’s two controller of news, Ambrose Okoh, was contacted, he denied knowledge of Mr. Bademosi’s resignation and the controversial directive by Mr. Momoh.

“I don’t have details of what you are talking about,” he said. “Come to the office on Monday so we can talk about it.”

Before his resignation, Mr. Bademosi anchored one of the most popular programmes on the station, ‘Politics Today’.

I think there are still honest Nigerian.....in as much as am happy for the refund,i just hope they will get their acts together coz i intends to do business in millions of NGN with them.either on POD or otherwise.anyway praise God!!!
Just refund? Whst about interest on your money for that period? Or do you think your money just laid quietly in the bank?, it became part of their capital for that time!
Did they apologise? Were they calling you regularly explaining why your order was delayed?
That is what good business people should do especially if they are in this kind of business (online marketing) where trust is always an issue from the begining.

I believe there should be a mass action against these people who have obviously misplaced their priorities.
Noone really care about prizes and raffles etc when they are still grappling with basic services.
For a very long time now, you can't call on mtn network without hitches; money paid and service not delivered; customer service only exist literally.
Maybe they should offer oil blocks as their prizes next time.

I thought I was alone. It is so bad now that I delete any message on my glo line without reading because I believe it must be from them. I don't bother to pick my glo line when it is ringing because their automated calls come in every hour.
The worst part now is the fact that an indigenous company will send me sms almost every hour in the middle of the night as if they think I am in a different time zone.

My solutions now are-
1. When glo line rings, don't bother to check who is calling.
2. An sms o my glo line is from glo until proven otherwise.
3. Switch off your glo line before you go to bed, otherwise glo won't allow you sleep.

Anyone know of any reliable cybercafe in Abuja with wifi that I can use for this update?

Kindly help bombard RIM with tweets pls.

TCD: Since you're having trouble downloading the os from rims servers, there are ways to trick DM into downloading from other 3rd party servers or pseudo servers you can create by yourself on your PC, basically means you download the playbook OS into ur computer then instead of DM connecting to RIM servers to update, it just updates from the Local OS you have downloaded and storoedin your computer.

Didnt want to bring it up earlier coz its kinda technical and somewhat complicated even I sef havent sat down to critically look at it coz i've not needed it. I'll post the link to the tutorial
Now, its my turn to lament and shout at RIM for doing this. I guess the most feasible option i have now left is this psudo-server cos all the other ones were met with recurrent interrupted connection. I understand the tutorial fairly. however, i have been searching for the OS itself, cant get from any site. do u have a link to any site i can download it?
Dont know why i didnt beg Oga Fhemmmmy to do this aspect of the config for me
