Lexusgs430: Regardless of the Network Provider, 2.5G would always provide a slower connection. Best to use 3G.
I was in this situation for a long time as the only MTN signal around my side of town was EDGE. Even opening of web pages took forever talkless of downloading stuff.

On 3G bridging, I downloaded over 1Gig worth of files yesterday. The only problem was hat my BB smartphone was so hot that the battery stopped charging and it run down while it was about 90% way through another large download!

Do people's phones get hot like that on bridge too? I use a 9800. Should I consider changing the phone? I've been waiting patiently for BB 10.
FamilyRe: Son-In-Law Impregnates His Mother-In-Law by alstacs(m): 2:29am On Jan 13, 2013
Fact or Fiction?
Fiction X10.
A Yoruba Mechanic would get married between 18 and 25, not 40 while the woman would get married even earlier and not 35 as presented here.

The mother in law definitely is not 57! Cos at this age, she can't possibly get pregnant!

Investigations here therefore reveal that this can only be a fictitious tale and not fact.

Cupid4ig, you surely do have competitors now.

Has tethering been discussed extensively anywhere on this thread? I tried that and I was being asked for specific configuration of the network. Unfortunately no nigerian network was listed.

Niiade: My oga i have done that already and posted links in excel format, which cost me but i gave it out free. if you want it on dropbox, would you pay for all the gbs of data that will be used?
Boss, that was a nice work you have done and I have downloaded a few from the excel file posted. That however was part one! Are we expecting the rest? So we may choose what to download and will not place an unnecessary stress on the good guys here.
We sincerely appreciate you guys. I see other threads and the principle there is money for hand, back ...... Even for very minor pieces of non professional advice they offer on Nairaland.

If we do have the complete sheet from a to z from chief niiade, I think we will all go......gag..ban... In short we will all feel cool like Cupid4ig.

PoliticsRe: FG To Buy 30 Airplanes To Reduce Airline Ticket by alstacs(m): 7:01am On Jan 04, 2013
CFCfan: ^^
I think it's a form of subsidy for the airlines to ease the huge financial burden on their backs. The airlines would make interest payments to the FG from their ticket sales. I read somewhere that the FG loan would have a single-digit interest rate (below 10%).
Nice theory and news brother but that doesn't work in Naija! You read that but when you move closer, you will be shocked at the details!
The first concept is- "what's in it for me?"
I give you a billion dollars, you pay me 5% upfront while you struggle payback to the government with the "single digit interest".
You actually need 800million but we must give you 1 billion cos "our ogas" need the remaining $200 million for their pockets".
These are our principles in Nigeria. Anytime I hear these hopeless s.wines wnat to buy anything, I know pockets are getting filled up again. They only sow where they intend to reap, otherwise, poor Nigerians like us may go to hell.
PoliticsRe: FG To Buy 30 Airplanes To Reduce Airline Ticket by alstacs(m): 6:44am On Jan 04, 2013
CFCfan: I don't think a "national carrier" is necessary. The govt can help to subsidize the private airlines to reduce their financial costs. But I agree that the price of aviation fuel should be reduced. This will happen when more refineries come on stream.
Government subsidise private airlines? This government sows where its cronies reap.
Haven't you heard of jimoh Ibrahim and Air Nigeria? The bail out fund?

What about Dangote and his tax holidays and artificially created monopolies?

Creating a smooth and level ground for running just good enough. Most of those businessmen actually are extensions of our corrupt system.

I agree on aviation fuel, I also agree with folks on tax on tickets! A $2000 ticket with $1000 tax is just too ridiculous.

As others have contributed- He who observes the weather will never plant. I'm into the process now and what I enjoy is the truthfulness of the people working with me.
After securing the plot, I was advised to plan for a specified number of blocks, buy stones/gravels, sharp sands and cement. Anytime I got a little money, I bought something or deposited for cement.
Going this way, I was not under pressure. I completed my foundation today!

Car TalkRe: People Hide Plate Number Of Cars For Sale: Why? by alstacs(m): 9:32pm On Dec 31, 2012
Part of the reason is because some people have a lot to hide. A friend was to buy a car in Abuja recently and he was told the car had been used for just a few months in Nigeria. Toyota sienna 2004 with odometer reading of 78000 miles.
I asked for the registration particulars and the dealers started fighting. I told them the new buyer wants to buy with the registration since it was registered just a few months before then, but they refised to give us.
We later discovered that the car had been used for over 5 years in Nigeria and the odometer reading wasn't real.

alstacs: I just noticed that the word to go version on the PlayBook is a little primitive!
It doesn't display charts and graphs undecided
I tried opening similar Microsoft word documents on my BlackBerry smartphone and behold I see my charts and graphs.
This is my second disappointment since I got the PlayBook.
Is there anyway to overcome this?
Was there an update I missed out?
Guys, any hope for me on this subject?
PoliticsRe: Osun To Commit N1bn To Hospitals’ Rehabilitation In 2013 by alstacs(m): 10:41am On Dec 31, 2012
What I'm saying in short is- Osun or any other state in Nigeria is ripe. The blueprint has be developed, the programme is under the NHIS. The government has nothing to do than just encourage the people to enlist or register. funny enough, some local governments in northern Nigeria have started subscribing and their citizens walk into hospitals and enjoy! You may wish to check on Niger and I think Gombe.
I don't work for NHIS or any HMO neither do I own a hospital! I just get annoyed when people suffer and die in ignorance when they can reject the yearly cup of rice from their senator and demand for better life starting with health.
PoliticsRe: Osun To Commit N1bn To Hospitals’ Rehabilitation In 2013 by alstacs(m): 10:32am On Dec 31, 2012
mapet: @alstacs,

1.I'm really impressed about your idea, as practiced in most advanced countries like the US and UK
.................
5. The government can assist in paying premium, but trust me, once you go the way of medical insurance, a precursor to that is that you've privatized virtually of the hospitals and the government will hands off and not may not pay premium as expected
I quite agree with you and I appreciate your ideas. I must say I love nairaland cos of folks like you.
However, I live in Nigeria and I know that the health insurance for now works a little different from what obtains outside. The NHIS has been begging state governments to enlist their employees......they are not interested. They prefer brief unsustainable programmes to score cheap points.

The NHIS of Nigeria has a programme for the rural community where people are encouraged to form cooperative societies or religious associations to subscribe. They pay a small token per year and they are covered against over 90% of health events for the year.
We surely do have issues about our population statistics but this is partially overcome by the fact Okada riders have association that can subscribe, petty traders, farmers and market women have. If you don't belong to any of the categories, you may wish to register as an individual.
Government hospitals are involved in the care provision as well as the highbrow private hospitals. You choose the facility you want. You therefore see a farmer in a very wonderful hospital. This has made a lot of private hospitals improve their services and customer care so as to gain enrollees also they may be delisted if customers complain. They will therefore lose the monthly capitations the get.
Even government hospitals that get involved have a lot of money to develop their facilities.

Health insurance is not the best but seems to be a little better than our government can ever offer. It has got a lot of issues to. The only fully private sector here are the health maintenance organisations.
Let the government and politicians score their points by paying premium of their market women for example for 2 years.
The government of Nigeria sincerely doesn't have any bussiness in health care running for now. Ordinary road, power etc have proven us right.
