If I would choose, I would rather go the way of an actual consistent human being who does beyond just work of a "gate operator" but does a lot more including supervising the automated systems.
We often take for granted the cost of some of these little things.
A ubiquitous gateman it is for me and this doesn't affect the fact that I prefer the automated gate.

Succinctly outlined.

EgunMogaji2:
You routinely says this stuff but it’s a one sided view because you condescendingly think all our Mai Guards do is open gate.

Some of the tasks mine does is:

Sweeps and clean the compound.
Washes and feeds the dogs.
Washes the vehicles but not the bikes.
Runs errands occasionally and as needed.
Manages the electrical system.
Plants and trims trees and flowers.
Provides presence in the compound.
Sprays vegitation killer on adjoining undeveloped properties.
Ensures water storage is adequate.
Opens and close gate typically only twice a day.

Automation is the way to go in all facets of a residence, not just gate, but in most cases will not replace a conscientious Mai Guard, rather it will supplement him. If one chooses to have one.

When the dogs go apeshit in the middle of the night it’s refreshing to have another male adult in the compound to investigate with. For those of us in remote areas.

Anyways, just an alternative viewpoint.

PS: even in lowly Ibadan you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone to accept N15K. It’s impossible unless maybe you provide meals.

We’ve been doing this thread now for a minute.

Lots of proven and established builders have wowed us with fantastic structures over the years.

People like Aventures, Spyder880, Skimanski, RichYoungRuler, Abdulwastecx, Podosci, KolaShangOne, Darenyx and others that I may have forgotten.

I don’t recall ever reading them post seeking for business or claiming number one or the best. Combined they must have hundreds of millions in completed projects.

Guys, thanks for your humility and letting your work speak for itself.
I wish I could showcase my completed projects here someday, I was completely ignorant just in 2013 when artisans and engineers were using me as chewing stick. Within a short period of time, I became a lay expert following folks here and their projects.
You guys are too much. I negotiate from position of knowledge now.
Spyder was one person I respect, breakdown of projects and cost to the last kobo even declaring his profit openly! We owe our individual successes to all of you.

Just re-read what, you just wrote and re-evaluate the context. If I have a project that I want to contract out and ask for a quotation from 10 people. am I going to pay a token to all 10 of them?ALl established contractors have throughout the years developped a standard mechanism to evaluate cost at almost no cost.
This was thing that I just could not understand; people asking to be paid to give your quotation for them to bid in a work you wish to give out. I got a welder to come assess and give me quotation for burglary proof. The eeeeeeediota told me how much he will charge per window for the quotation. I simply told him not to bother.

I am sorry house. I noticed that over the past years there has been a wide variability in the prices of deep cycle batteries unlike in the past when the prices were somewhat close.
For instance I see 12V, 200mAH batteries go for between 80k to as high as 180k each. What then guides people's informed choices on these batteries?
Why are some so cheap and others over 100% above the cost of others?

essegis:
@alstacs, sorry network been no gree me add the pictures of my set up.

One thing you should know is if you are going with option A you should have a set up good enough to float your battery under 4hrs. Though that's the normal time lag used in these calculations. Put it in place and I'm sure you should be good.

See mine, 24 panels 300w each sloped southwards to the minutest angle the carport guys could afford. Attached to 2 different systems. The excess on the gen house is sloped facing northwards, not my plan but the original panels were too big (unknown to me) and na fight cos I refused them going on the house roof. Madam no gree the gen house oo.
This is a beautiful set up. I shall study the sun and the shadows for the next week or two. I don't have the luxury of space as my compound is quite tight. Looking at your set up, I may need locations both A and B eventually as my system grows.
I am presently installing a 3.5Kva, 48v inverter with only 4 units of 200mAH 12V batteries and only 8 units of 250W panels to start with.
I did enjoy about 18 hours supply but now dropped to 12 hours from NEPA. but e get some times when they just shut down for days. The frequency of such down times is increasing and that necessitated the inverter I never planned to have.
Lol at main houses roofs like 2 storey building na so oh... Quite steep!
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by alstacs(m): 11:07pm On Jul 31, 2020
essegis:
From your basic explanation I will say go for either A or B. First ask yourself a few questions. Which is sloped southwards with least slope angle. You know solar orientation changes all year/life round. So those shadows start, stop and orientation will change too.

I don't know if you own the house & can still make corrections but when I was building mine I visited site every time with a compass and sun monitoring. This prompted me to construct my carport sloped southwards & placed with the least shadow effects.

I don't believe the roof is the best place to mount panels in this country especially for us wey slope am up to 2 storey building heights. But if you got no option look for the one wey face south and fill if up first.

As for distance from CC, easily worked around with proper cable sizing. I hope the attached pictures will help.
Thank you very much for this.
All the locations are actually somewhat southwards but the car port is in the shadows of the main house till about noon when the sun is overhead and moves to the west. Car port will be installed next week and the slope can be determined with the least slope. however, that doesn't remove the shadows of the main house from it.
Unfortunately for me, the sun's orientation and shadow casting is being observed for the first time now just over the past month, so I don't know what it will be like as the year turns round.
One thing is certain, the BQ has no tall structures close to it and may be free of shadows all year round. I looked round other houses today in the area, and noticed their panels are all installed along that direction with varying slopes anyways.

Thank you for the charts on wire sizing, it's quite helpful. I will drill the installers to ensure we get the right things, in case they aren't aware.
Satellite TV TechnologyRe: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by alstacs(m): 6:38pm On Jul 31, 2020
NiyiOmoIyunade:
I would go with the unshaded BQ roof and use an appropriate cable gauge for power transmission with a suitable MPPT CC.

Depending on the details of your CC you may even add more panels in series to make sufficient voltage to offset transmission line losses - there are online tables that tell you what gauge of cable is needed for a given distance and ampacity at 3% acceptable losses, 5% acceptable losses and so on.

At my current location, two of my PV arrays travel over 30meters from the back of the house to get to the CCs - I used 385w panels, 4 in series with 16mm2 cable from PV combiner to CC here and no trouble or losses so far, of course the PV comes into a 250v/100A CC - the second array is 330w side by side and these are arranged 3 in series with 16MM cable from PV combiner to CC - no losses there either - the only extra I did here is to run 16mm2 cable from the farthest PV string to PV combiner box as it was say 18meter distance for the farthest string - this is vs the typical 6mm2 people use.

Option A may not be your best bet as the direction of shading/shadows changes all year round - you may not have seen the worst situation yet in your short term observations.
Thank you very much for this detailed response. I will be working on the maths

Option b, use 16mm or 10mm cable and teansmit at above 100v, max of 9 x 330w panels each string.

Good morning house, I have a fundamental problem that needs advice of the experts and your experience here.
I designated a safe well ventilated part of the house to situate my inverter but I have a problem choosing where to locate the solar panels.

The problems with the alternative solar panels location sites are presented below:

A. Car port.
It is close to the location of the inverter but at 9am, only 30% of the space is exposed to sun, at 10am about 50% and by 11am it is fully exposed to sun till sunset.
It is about 6 to 8m from the location of the inverter.

B. BQ Roof
It is exposed to the sun from about 7am to
to sunset. It is easy to access but it is about 18m from the location of the inverter and if the cables are to be buried underground, an additional length of about 9m needs to be added.

C. Main House Roof.
It's closest to the inverter but the roof is quite steep and the face of the roof selected is limited by the numbers of panels it can take. It's exposed to sunshine from about 7am to sunset. The installers think it's should be avoided.

Kindly advise.
Do I sacrifice the closeness of the car port to loss of 3hrs of sunshine daily?
Or to take advantage of the BQ good expose to sunshine but in the process run close to 30m of cable between the panels and charge controller?

Thank you.
Happy Sallah Celebrations

Hello house. I am sorry I want to ask a basic but may sound stupid question.
I need a 3.5KVA inverter based on the evaluation of my load to the powered and it was also estimated I need a minimum of 4 pieces of 200mA 12V batteries. The confusion now is
1. Some Hybrid inverters come with in built mppt charge controllers, it is advisable to go for this ones?
2. A 24V system or 48V system, which should I prefer?

thank you

Better say sorry I can't deal with this than to leave the person that way with that statement. It helps the person move on and maybe decide on how best to deal with clients subsequently. It's an honorable thing to dismiss a vendor, artisan or worker or even a contractor in a simple fashion than suspending or keeping the person hanging with that statement.

If need be you don't say it in front of him. Leave them a text or whatsapp message thereafter. In my opinion, it's the best way to treat people. Positively or negatively in brings about a defining closure of a discussion. Thank you for your time.

Many people have discussed here about fair pricing of workmanship in building.
I got the shock of my life today when a painter was invited to come look at the ground floor of a duplex that has a sitting room, presit, dining room and a bedroom.
The man said he was going to paint the the interior of the floor for 140k.
I asked him what paint he was going to use, he aid that just his workmanship that I am to buy the paint. It is just plain paint, no special designs.
Screeding has been done oh.
I did not even know how to price, so I told him to drop his quote, I will get back to him.

I put this here so that those who are in the business will know people are actually in need when they come here to ask what we think is fair for a particular job at a specific stage of their construction.

The best to avoid the stains on the cars is to use only soft water while washing it. Water Softeners make the job easy by using chemical treatment to turn hard water into soft which can eventually be used to wash the car. This way, the minerals present in the hard water don't stick to the car's paint.
I have got some questions here.
1. It may be impossible to get soft water for the ouspose of washing car specifically, so what happens?

2. Damage control woth vinegar, doesn't it damage the paint of the car?

I am this issue presently, even the windscreen and windows of my car is stained..

I've been inactive for a few months and I started reading posts from February and it was very obvious that the elders have left the house and children have been moulding each others head.

The experience shared and gained here cannot be measured or paid for. Unlike the perception of most new dancers on the theatre here, reading and learning here doesn't create quacks but clients who are better informed and who could reason rationally.

Enough frivolous posts and ridiculous empty experts dancing out naked in the rain here.

You are missing the point.

Go to Autos section, if you want to sell a car, you open a thread for that car displaying its pictures and other information. Go to technology market, pretty much the same. The same thing happens on properties, if you want to sell a house or building products, you open a thread. It is allowed once a while to direct traffic to your thread link.

What you are doing is spamming this thread which is not meant for what you are foing and it is annoying. Gone are the days where Nairaland rules were strict, you would have had enough bans to discourage you from spams.

On this thread, i'd rather see your project sites, the installation methods and materials you use. More people with will get interested and ask you questions leading to more patronage.

I wont patronize a spammer even when i need his service.
Seconded., sir
Even if you have the best methods, the most competitive pricing, I won't patronise you.
All you have demonstrated here is inability to follow simple directives, adhere to simple code of behaviour
