PoliticsAnambra Hits Self-sufficiency In Rice Production- Premiumtimes by AmericanQuarter(op): 5:29pm On Oct 24, 2016
The Anambra State Commissioner for Agriculture, Afam Mbanefo, said on Monday that the state has reached self-sufficiency in rice production.

Mr. Mbanefo made the disclosure at a Commodity Alliance Forum/Consultative meeting organised by the state Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) in Awka.

The commissioner recalled that the state government had earlier targeted production of 210,000 metric tonnes of rice per annum.

“Based on the calculation of our expected yield, we are expecting to realise over 236,000 metric tonnes of rice in 2016 based on the production capacity.”

Mr. Mbanefo said the calculation was based on expected yield of 35 per cent of over 14,300 farmers and the activities of programmes like the VCDP and FADAMA.

He said the expected yield also included the activities of rice investors in the state, including Coscharis farms, Joseph Agro and others.

He said the state government was passionate about revolutionising agriculture and making it wealth creator, especially for unemployed youth willing to venture into the sector.

The commissioner, who said the state government ensured a linkage between farmers and off-takers, advised farmers yet to form cooperatives to do so.

Earlier, the National Programme Coordinator for VCDP, Ameh Onoja, said the aim of the programme was to assist the Federal Government to reduce spending on importation of rice.

According to him, the overall goal is to ensure that rural poverty is reduced and to ensure accelerated economic growth is achieved on a sustainable and inclusive basis.

Mr. Onoja, who was represented by Basil Esinulo, said the project was developed to address some major constraints militating against agricultural development such as the poor organisation of farmers, processors and marketing.

According to him, tremendous boost in rice production will be achieved to increase incomes and food security in the country.

The acting state Programme Coordinator for VCDP, Bonaventure Mochebe, said the forum was organised to deliberate on issues that affect farmers and to seek ways to address the challenges.

He said that the forum will link farmers with financial institutions, off-takers, civil society organisations and other stakeholders in the rice business.

Mr. Mochebe urged government to rescue farmers whose three hectares of rice farmland were destroyed by Fulani herdsmen.

He said on the sideline of the programme that Fulani herdsmen’s cattle had destroyed over three hectares of rice farmland.

The forum also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), by the farmers, agro dealers and off-takers to strengthen their partnership and capacity of production.

SportsFootball Made In Anambra Hits Top Gear As Greek Consular Visit Anambra-pictures by AmericanQuarter(op): 5:20pm On Oct 24, 2016
The Ifeanyi Ubah led Anambra State Football Association, yesterday kicked off the Football Made in Anambra project with over 600 under-15 boys drawn from nine Local Government areas in Anambra State. The Local Governments represented were Njikoka, Awka North, Idemili North, Idemili South, Orumba South, Ayamelum, Anambra East, Anambra West and Anaocha. The FIFA endorsed programme which took place at the Ifeanyi Ubah International Stadium was graced by the presence of the Greek Consular General to Nigeria, Lykourgos Antonios Kaplanis as he was treated to a colourful demonstration with the ball by the boys as the FC Ifeanyi Ubah anthem was sung. Recall that the Managing Director of Westham United, Angus Kinnear earlier in the month flagged off the Football Made in Anambra ‘1 Family – 1 Footballer’ initiative by donating a whooping sum of 30,000 British Pounds to the Anambra State Football Association while promising to send technical assistance once the project hits top gear.

The project which is structured to unearth budding talents is billed to engage 50,000 children from 50,000 families and earmarked to produce at least in 5 Messis and 5 Ronaldos in Anambra state within the next five years. The first batch of young boys from nine local governments were given the opportunity to display their God given talents under the watchful eyes of Chief Mike Umeh, the former Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association and the Chairmen of the various Local Government Football Councils present at the occasion. Also on display to Greek Consular General was the multi-billion dollar Ifeanyi Ubah Games Village under construction as Dr. Ubah took time to take him round the facility in a show of the management’s effort to promote and project sports as well as buttress the essence of meaningfully engaging the teeming youths of the state through active participation in sports culture and talent development. In his remarks, the Chairman of Anambra State Football Association, Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, thanked the Greek Consular General for finding the time and deeming it worthy to visit the facility domiciled in the Industrial Capital of the state.

Dr. Ubah stated that upon completion, the world-class structure cum facility will aid in the continuous harnessing of football talents for the youths in the state, hosting of national and international games as well as serve as a mammoth site for tourist attraction. Dr. Ubah also expressed thanks to the children who were on song, charging them to go home and do more with the footballs and kits given to them as he was eager to see improvements in their skills when their batch gathers again in three weeks time. “I am very excited, having witnessed what these young boys can do with the ball. We will make sure that they continue to grow and above all, reach out to more children. My advice to them is just to go home and engage themselves more with the footballs and kits we have provided for them. We believe that with the kind of investments we are making in football, we will able to produce the Ronaldos and Messis of the next generation. You can see that some of the kids already have their role models, some of them idolize Ronaldo, Messi, Drogba, Ozil, Kanu Nwankwo and Jayjay. This shows their focus and the height of their aspirations at this tender age and with proper tutelage, their dreams would be realized”.

Dr. Ubah ended his remarks by thanking the people of Nnewi and Anambra at large for their support and prayers on the journey so far both in club administration and his quest to transform and redefine football essence in Anambra State and Nigeria. The youngsters also expressed their delight at being part of this novel initiative, noting that this has opened a whole new channel to them in a quest to replicate the successes of their idols. “I am very happy to be part of this programme; I want to thank Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah for giving us this opportunity, especially for the footballs, the jersey, and the boots. I promise I won’t let him down”, Chidi Aghadi affirmed. Highlights of the event were series of novelty football matches for the U-15 boys from the different local government areas present as Anambra East defeated Orumba South by a goal to nil, Njikoka lost to Anambra West 5-4 on penalties after a goalless affair in regulation time. Also the FC IfeanyiUbah ”Feeders team” took on the ”Trial (Screening) Team” to add to the glamour of the event while some of the under-15 boys were gifted with N10,000 for displaying a keen understanding of the game. The second batch of boys from the remaining Local Governments will be on song in two weeks time as the Anambra State Football Association’s Football Made in Anambra gains further momentum.

CBN TO RAISE ANAMBRA'S AGRIC INTERVNTION FUND TO N5Bn- Emefiele

*as FG delegation storms Anambra to understudy Obiano's agric success story

By Kingsley Ezekwelu

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)was going to review for approval, the Anambra state government's request for N5billion to be made available for farmers for mechanised Agriculture in the state.

The CBN governor Mr Godwin Emefiele disclosed this yesterday during a visit to the state in company of a high powered Federal Government delegation including the Minister of Agriculture and rural development, Chief Audu Ogbe, the Governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Abubakar Bagudu and top CBN and Federal Ministry Agriculture officials.

The team came on a fact finding visit to the Coscharis farms, Anaku in Ayamelum Council Area , aimed at assessing the impact of the N2billion CBN-backed funds earlier provided to the farms and to unravel the state's success story on rice production.

The team toured the farm's large expanse of rice field where harvesting was presently going on with Mechanized harvester as well as other facilities belonging to farm after which they met with members of the Rice Farmers Association in the state at Omor Rice field.

While conducting the team round, Gov Willie Obiano said that a major factor driving the Anambra success story in rice production was the organization and coordination his administration brought into the subsector, especially in the distribution of funds and farm implements to the farmers.

He said the visit was a great opportunity to show Nigerians and in deed the world that "Anambra Rice" is real, adding that with its present capacity, the state was speedily approaching it's consumption capacity and will soon start generating surplus for export.

The governor commended the CBN for its support which has enabled the state achieve so much in Agriculture and appealed to the apex bank to raise it's intervention funds to the State to N5billion to enable more farmers benefit.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Ogbe in his remarks, said President Muhammadu Buhari was investing heavily in Agriculture because of his belief that unless Nigeria was able to feed her population it cannot boast of being independent, adding that with what is happening in Anambra, the country would stop importing rice soon.

He lauded the working structure which the state government has put in place that has energized the value chain in the rice subsection, and said the jobs already being created especially for the youths would give impetus to the Federal government's efforts at job creation.

For its part, the CBN Governor, Mr Emefiele explained that the Bank decided to venture into supporting Agricultural activities to end the heavy importation of food in the country and to create a viable alternative for driving the nation's economy whose oil reserves he noted have been drained.

He said the visit was the beginning of an assessment tour of the nation's agriculturally endowed states on the mandate of the President, aimed at developing a pragmatic blueprint that will drive it's strides at transforming the nation's Agric sector.

The Kebbi State Governor, Alhaji Bagudu described the State government's decision to provide infrastructure for the farmers as highly commendable.

The Chairman of Coschars Farms, Mr Cosmos Maduka noted that although had conceived the idea of venturing into agriculture about twenty-nine years ago, it took the intervention of Gov Obiano in the areas of security and the introduction of the enabling framework for partnership to achieve what he has been able to do in collaboration with the state government.

He should have built this edifice in Awka. I don't know which corporate bodies will occupy this mammoth office inside that village. He should have built this in Awka and then built something more modest in umuchukwu. This building is not in sync with the environment of a rural setting like umuchukwu. I don't understand this waste of funds.
What he is developing at Umuchukwu is an international medical research center that will attract the world to Anambra. Besides Umuchukwu is not far from the capital territory. What he is about to develop in Awka is a world class high rise office buildings/event centers. It is all good!
