PoliticsObiano Tightens Security Around Anambra's Borders And Deploys Air Surveillance by AmericanQuarter(op):
Anambra State is tightening security around territorial borders, with an aerial police helicopter surveillance to search out enclaves of Fulani herdsmen in forests and bushes.

Governor Willie Obiano said that six camps of the herdsmen had been discovered at the neighbouring borders, though without any threat to the peace of the state.

He told reporters that the leaders of the Hausa-Fulani Community in the state had been instructed to visit those blocks and find out the identities of the various groups and inform them of the existing agreement between cattle herders and host communities.

Part of the agreement is a prohibition of the use of AK47 by herdsmen and the payment of compensation when farmlands are destroyed by herdsmen or cattle killed by any community
.

Meanwhile, soldiers and other security agencies have been camped in Umumbo community where threats of attack from suspected herdsmen have been observed.

The aerial surveillance of the Police Helicopter covers major cities in Anambra state and then extends to interior areas and territorial borderlines of the state including thick forests, bushes and farmlands in search of any encampment of herdsmen anywhere for proper identification in order to forestall any possibilities of attack or clashes following the recent attack on a community in Enugu state.

The surveillance is the initiative of Governor Obiano with the assistance of the Inspector General of Police, as a measure to check the activities of herdsmen in and around the borderlines of the state.

According to the Governor, the surveillance has yielded fruits, as six blocks of unknown Fulani herdsmen have been discovered though without any threat to the peace of the state in the meantime.

Proactive actions for proper identification of the herders are being put in place through the Hausa-Fulani leaders in the state.

Aside the aerial surveillance, the Governor also enjoined the police to patrol with the smart cars provided by the state government in the night and ensure that herdsmen moving their cattle in the night do not constitute another menace on the roads either by causing accidents or blocking the road.

The State Commissioner of Police, Hassan Karma, said that the surveillance team was well equipped to track down criminals while also responding to distress calls from threatened communities
.

Umumbo is one of the threatened communities in Ayamelum Local Government Area of the state which shares boundaries with Enugu state.

The surveillance team arrived with the Commander of 302 Artillery Regiment of Onitsha Military Cantonment, Colonel I.M. Abdullahi, to ascertain the security situation in the area of which he received assurances that everything was under control according to the President General of the community, Anthony Okafor.

HealthRe: Onitsha Ranked As The Most Polluted City In The World By WHO by AmericanQuarter: 5:38pm On May 14, 2016
Kennydoc:
I hope learning isn't difficult for you, sincerely.
The list talked about most polluted cities in the world. They only measured air pollution and rated the cities accordingly, so you cannot extrapolate it by yourself to mean dirtiness. Most of the cities listed there aren't necessarily dirty, but they have the highest concentrations of particulate matter in the air most of which are released by exhaust fumes of vehicles, generators, industries, even dust from roads.

Onitsha is the gateway to the south east, apart from being the largest commercial city in the south east. It has very heavy vehicular traffic when you consider it's size compared to any other city in Nigeria. What I mean is that because of the very small size of Onitsha, and the fact that more than 50% of all vehicles entering and exiting the south east pass through the town, it has the highest vehicular density in Nigeria. That's the reason why the particulate matter in the air is so high, compared to Lagos. The study only measured the particulate matter in the air in the different cities studied.

There is a whole lot of difference between air pollution and dirtiness. Beijing has always been known to be one of the most polluted cities in the world cos of the concentration of particles in the air. Even the atmosphere in Beijing often looks hazy in the daytime cos of the high concentration of fumes in the air, but Beijing isn't a dirty city. It's the capital of China and is better organized and neater than even Abuja.
Don't bother yourself as we all know that Onitsha is a beautiful neat city. Someone has already pointed out the basis for the survey and it was limited to the Eastern cities whereas we know that the PM for Lagos is by far more than Onitsha or any other major eastern city. So worry not as the reality defeats the so called report.

Thanks. I was there and took the pictures myself and I know the Asaba side from the Onitsha side.
Yes the Asaba side is also bad where the traffic gathers around the bridge, and i did not start feeling well until we moved well beyond the bridge area in Asaba heading towards Lagos. Its not so much Onitsha city but the Niger river bridge area and the heavy industrial traffic it brings. Low quality diesel is a terrible thing and those large lorries burn it in large messy quantities.
Thats why its best to have several bridges spread over several areas rather than have all of the cross regional traffic converge at one city to spoil the city in this way. Nigeria has out grown the existing Niger River infrastructure and that second Niger bridge is not enough. There needs to be at least one more bridge closer to Owerri and portharcourt. Looks like Abo and Ndoni towns (see the photos) would be a good location if a good expressway is installed to handle the traffic. If portharcourt and owerri Traffic could take a more southern route, it would save time, fuel burn/$ and divert overwhelming traffic away from Onitsha/Asaba
The city I live in is just finishing a 5th bridge in a city of almost 1.5 million people, but it uses so many bridges to serve the interstate corridor passing through the city. People cross the river in my city here from many states and once they cross, they divert into directions going to several states, just like Onitsha. People converge at Onitsha from Lagos, Benin city, Ibadan, Akure and so on, and when they cross at Onitsha, they divert onward towards Owerri, portharcourt, calabar, anambra and so on. But all using one bridge and waiting for a second to erect. We have our 5th bridge finishing up in my city here and its not even a major city. Niger river need to increase the number of bridges and spread them out to cover crossing close to Owerri and Portharcourt.
The Niger bridge has always been the hotspot. Even the survey was done at the niger bridge area during high traffic season. But the larger Onitsha metropolis is devoid of this as the niger bridge is the convergence point between the north and south. This is one of reasons for the construction of the second niger bridge which is off Onitsha metropolis towards south of River niger but still within view. Second niger bridge will go along way.

Below is the main reason they gave for the high PM in Onistha. Note: This is the primary source that was used by WHO in their article.

I still repeat that Nigeria educational system is "fantastically corrupt" if "educated folks" are not able to do simple findings like this on their own, before coming to exhibit their ignorance on public forum.
The study was actually done only in the SE, and all of the cities studied according to this information below has the PM. Thanking you for going deeper in this to unravelling the facts. Air pollution is a worldwide affair and Nigeria is not an exception.

Thanks for this post, It explains a lot about what happened to me when passing through onitsha.

I was riding in a van and started to feel light headed, dazed and like my breath was not carrying enough strength. It lasted only through the on both sides of the Niger river bridge. generators.
It didnt look as bad as some of the pictures i have seem of China, but i was feeling it strong and was worried i would go unconscious from lack of good air.
The first and second pix are Onitsha while the 3rd and 4th are Asaba. Just so you know the difference in the pictures.

The issue is that the mall wasn't built by govt so its not an 'achievement' by your hero governor.

The mall was developed by the Anambra state government and Africa Capital Alliance. It is more or less a government powered project.

Eastern retail business upbeat as Capital Alliance, Anambra unveil Onitsha Mall

Posted in Retail, Fast food & Food service

NIGERIA - Retail business in the eastern part of Nigeria is in upward momentum as African Capital Alliance (ACA), a leading private equity investment firm in Nigeria, in collaboration with Anambra State Government are perfecting arrangements to open a retail mall in Onitsha by the second quarter of 2015.

Known as Onitsha Mall, the retail outlet which would be anchored by Shoprite, a well-known South African retail brand that currently dominates retail business in Nigeria will contain about 51 stores of various sizes.

Construction work on the mall has reached 64 percent completion and would be 100 percent completed before the proposed opening date of 2015.

Research has shown that Onitsha is the fifth fastest growing city in the world with the biggest market in West Africa known as ‘Onitsha Main Market’. It is the economic nerve centre and the gateway to the eastern part of Nigeria. It is known to be a major commercial city in the South-East Nigeria, and according to the promoters of the mall, these were part of the reasons they chose to situate the multi-million naira project in Onitsha.

Also, Onitsha Mall will offer a serene shopping experience to retailers and customers with features such as 12,100 square meters of net lettable space; 24 hours electricity and security; over 500 parking bays; six local and international restaurants; central air conditioning; ATM gallery and an average of five stores reserved for banks.

According to the developer, the lucrative business environment, which provides huge investment opportunities for investors, is another major reason for building Onitsha Mall that would be the first of its kind in the city.

Obi Nwogugu, representative of African Capital Alliance, told those who attended the 0nitsha Mall Retailers Forum held in Lagos recently that the vision of Anambra State government and ACA for the Onitsha Mall was to build an infrastructure that would attract private capital into the state.

Nwogugu, who noted that Anambra State was ranked second in telecommunications disposable income and highest in commercial and microfinance banks branches in the Eastern Nigeria, also said that the city recently attracted investment worth $120 million from South African Breweries, which is currently planning to double its investment due to the success of the business.

“Onitsha Mall is a development project sponsored by African Capital Alliance and the Anambra State Government while Diamond Bank is the debt financier of the project. In terms of safety of lives and property, the state has recently received a significant investment in security equipment and personnel in the city, which created an enabling environment for business to thrive,” Nwogugu added.

Explaining the basis for the construction work, Chuka Okoye, project manager, Pro-M Limited, who stated that the construction work currently being handled by Akiota Works Limited, which took over from the former contractor, Technics Construction Company, assured that the project would be completed before the opening date of May 2015.

He slated February 1, 2015 as the proposed date for all the tenants to start occupying their spaces as the beneficial occupation shall be granted to tenants to commence their shop fit-outs, which is expected to take 30 to 60 days before the opening date.

“The mall, which would be managed by Broll Nigeria Limited on completion, is located at the old Anambra Broadcasting building at Park Street, off Awka Road in Onitsha.

The road leading to Park Street has been dualised and resurfaced with traffic lights by the state government to accommodate the volume of human and vehicular traffic on the road at the take-off of the mall,” Okoye explained.

Ikengawo:
Osha has surpassed Kano economically and is chasing Abuja closely according to recent reports (same with Aba)

What's left for Osha and Aba is livability. Parks, trees, museums, plazas, squares, cleaniness, beautification, sports clubs, bible clubs, pools, monuments, gardens and more TREES. Things that will make people want to live there outside of business. When you have these things, people invest on a larger scale. Without them they will only open depots or distribution centers. If it's a place someone wants to live they will put their corporate office there and that's will bring 10x the investment and capital as a depot.
Onitsha has improved alot in road networks, parks and quite livable with lots of plazas, eateries and mall hosting shoprite, movies, entertainment etc.

Onitsha Business School has been established among other corporate organisations. Raddison Blu is setting up their 5star hotel in the city.

A lot more is taking place in the city unreported.
