Charliemorgano: When i listen to babes who want to get married, their priority is that the guy must be verty comfortable....recently its observed that the comfortable and financially stable guys are also looking out for very comfortable ladies with strong family background....what gave rise to this trend?....personal choice or the economy

Personal choice, economy and sometimes LUCK. grin

Not every woman will START from SCRATCH with a struggling man.
Not every man that has integrity and prospects WILL eventually become comfortable/rich. Sad but true.
Some people WILL marry for money and have GREAT marriages.
Some people will marry for LOVE and regret it.

Let's stop thinking that life is a "one-size-fits-all".

aaliyaSA: I've nvr done forums n nt into social netwrkin bt thought tht dis cld b the place to get unbiased opinions.
I've been offered a position tht wld b a promotion n think tht I am goin to turn it down....this wld b the 2nd time I turn down n offer. Problem is if iaccept it wld mean relocation (650km frm home)though it wld b back to where I come frm n where all my family r. I relocated to where I currently am almst 2 years ago n I love the place. Relocatin means goin back to city life. I currently enjoy wht I do, travel a. lot n earn a good salary.I am also able to work frm home, dnt report to anyone here (boss is based at Head office 650km away)which allows me to b flexible n also work n make decisions independently). Promtion wld bring a 15% increase, move 1 level up n shares in co. Wil increase. On personal level my house back home has been let out n tenants have 1 year left of contract so this wld mean stayin wit family n I love my independence n privacy. I wld also have to let out my house I am currently livin in n give up on a personal business opportunity. I also had health issues when I lived in the city which subsided n has been a lot more manageable since I relocated to the coast.I was. Supposed to respond to offer today but meeting got rescheduled fr tomrrow so wld like to get any opinions fast. Am I shootin myself in the foot in terms of my career?

Well... it depends on 2 things:
1. What's important to you? Your happiness OR your career? and which you are willing to make sacrifices for (sometimes at the expense of the other).
2. The nature of your organization. If it's an understanding one or not (some companies understand and respect their employees' decision to accept/reject a promotion).

Some comprehension problems? Let me fix that...

damiso:
Of course some people need help cos your tone about the 'people' on this thread suggests we think they dont.
aniffy4eva: Oh well, maybe i should speak from the other side of the divide. Some of these people really NEED the help, either from abroad or locally. Growing up was quite difficult for me and i had 2 sets of "cousins". Type A cousins had the mentality of majority of the people in this forum - "All Nigerians are unworthy of help... blah blah blah....",

Err... MAJORITY being the operative word here.

damiso:
The issue most people or let me speak for myself is this dependence or should i say sense of entitlement.Did you read my post? Was my aunty not helped?Dare say i she even views her hubby as a meal ticket cos when my mum advises her wont u find something to do to bring in small income you hear my hubby wont allow me he does not want me to work bla bla and then turn round and say my mum is jealous cos she had to work for luxuries and she has them given to her by her husband.Like seriously.....Is Mac powder necessity?

aniffy4eva:
There'll always be good and bad people and the "bad" ALWAYS outnumber the good - however, in your bid to weed out the bad, make sure you don't hurt the good.
IMO, i support sustainable "HELP" directed at education, capacity building etc. I usually don't do stuff like "business ideas", "marriage ceremonies" etc

I believe i qualified the kind of HELP i support.
As for your aunt, she clearly has issues tongue

Type A cousins had the mentality of majority of the people in this forum - "All Nigerians are unworthy of help... blah blah blah....", treated me like shiit .. cheesy (chai i don suffer...) but i took all in stride....and then i got a whiff of one of my cousins who lived in the US. I got in touch with him and the "HELP" was consistent throughout my school years. $100 now and again.. here and there...I'll call him the Type B cousin.

Fast forward a few years later... levels don change grin... i'm his (Type B cousin) kids' favourite uncle - always showing up with loads of toys etc. He's glad to be a part of my success story. We are VERY close and he's strong influence in my life!

Type A cousins are now struggling desperately hard to be "friends", adding me on FB, trying to have a "relationship" etc... it's just the christian in me that restrains me from giving them the "middle-finger salute" angry

@ OP.. what i'm trying to say is

Help as much as you can without causing your nuclear family harm.

Family / Re: Genotype Test Splits My Family. by aniffy4eva(m): 6:37pm On Jan 03, 2013
YarisMan: I checked the genotype of my acclaimed son two good times in highly reputable laboratories, the result is always AS while repeated check of mine and his mother was AA. An attempt to do DNA test proved abortive 'cos of the cost. Also i feel it's a waste of resources 'cos many experts said it was not possible for an AS to come from two confirmed AA. The boy's facial resemblance was 90% that of the mother. I love the boy but when i think of all these, i feel bad: as if i'm wasting my time with a family that will soon split up. It happened(separation) at last in some few months ago. I never told anybody about the test result but she broadcast it by herself, and she intentionally packed her load out of my house. What do you think i should do concerning the child as i still love the boy?

Bros...
The child isn't yours.
She left your house with HER child.

All you can do is pick up the broken pieces of your life and MOVE on. I don't know how old the boy is but if he's younger than 3 -4 years, trust me he'll forget about you in due course unless something dramatic happens in future. The only thing you can do is promise yourself that if he comes looking for you in the future, be good to him. C'est fini.

Can you ever share responsibilities EQUALLY? ... I don't think a chart with my name ticked on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to wash dishes, clean the house and walk the dog works for either of us. There are some chores i naturally gravitate to and some i don't (the same goes for her). And if no one feels like doing it, well... we leave it till someone does tongue

The same goes for the finances. There's usually a POT of FUNDS for the house but there are MANY times we buy household stuff froom our individual purses without keeping scores.

mother28: Happy new year to my brothers/sisters. My people i need an honest feedback. After living in American for 12yrs,i am contemplating on coming home (port harcourt) to start a small business.I must confess am not sure what type of business to venture out in.I know i want to come home and contribute to the economy, am tired of living in American, i dont feel happy being here any longer. My people can you pls advise me on what business to venture in, things to ship to nigeria that might sell.I currently have a savings of $21,000 and am a bit scared. Is there anyone who recently relocated to nigeria? How was the experience? Any likes or dislike? Did yall make it in our motherland?

I'm usually not the pessimistic type but i'm going to have to be honest here. Until you are sure about what business you want to do, don't even start. Please don't listen to people (they'll soon come online tongue)telling you to come "home" and "figure it out".. just don't...

Also be prepared for the culture shock. I know you are tired of US but trust me, you must be mentally prepared for business in Nigeria (and with Nigerians). When you eventually get the idea/business you want to settle for.. try a pilot (ie test-run) with a part of your savings (e.g. $5,000 or less). Also consider running an online store where people can actually purchase your goods without you actively staying in Nigeria and would probably cost you less. This should provide you with some knowledge that'll aid your final decision.

As for people who have recently relocated... there are good stories and also bad stories, we'll only just advise you based on the side of the divide we fall on as individuals. However, from my experience, the "bad" greatly outnumber the "good"....

Like we say down south.. abeg think am well well. cheesy

Hi Guys
Sorry i have some other questions..

What's limit to the number of times you can reschedule an interview? Though it says there are restrictions on the website (ie ustraveldocs), it doesn't state how many.
Secondly, how far away into the future are interview slots made available on the calendar? I checked and saw some slots in February, but march, April etc were all "greyed out". Is there like a "XY-week" availability from today's date?

Thanks in anticipation. smiley

Hi Guys

Please i need a little help here.
I recently booked a US visa appointment to renew our visas (my wife and I) on ustraveldocs dot com. Since i did the whole process on my profile, i received ONE US visa invitation letter for both of us - although both of our names are on it. However, i vaguely remember that i had to print 2 separate invitation letters for us the last time. My question is - Will the single US visa invitation letter suffice for both of us? Or is there something i'm not doing right?

Thanks in advance.

slenderdude: Let me give you a summary of my life, as an undergraduate at the university of ilorin, studied mechanical engrg, i designed and constructed and automated road sweeper using the basic slider crank and geneva stop mechanisms, i got my inspiration from the everyday lawma agents that endagers their lives just to clean our roads, knowing wel that all drivers are not sane. The equipment has its own wheel and is completely fuelless, runs on the residual 62.7% power unused yet supplied to the street lights,it was a master piece, nobody taught i could pull it off, my school presented it to the kwara state govt. which the ministry of works ran a field test on for 2weeks. Thats as good as it gets, it was my innovation, so i decided to get a patent for it and start producing, first for kwara state govt, then to other states, but because i graduated with a 3rd class my sch did not giv me all the support i needed, but to God be the glory, i m in china now, with a collaboratory patent on my design suported by the chinese govt.

@OP - Pretty insightful post.
@ballabriggs, @Frank-C, @obyrich - great perspectives.

IMO, there's always the RULE (based on a given system) and there are EXCEPTIONS (based on individuals).
I'll have to lean towards @ballabriggs/ @obyrich on this one. Sadly in Nigeria, few people are thinking about building systems, especially young people. That's why shouts of "I became a millionaire before XYZ years" rent the air. It's not a "bolekaja" approach that's required.... there has to be a coordinated effort to stimulate that.. similar to what the Chinese are doing. Do we have opportunities AVAILABLE for ANYONE who is WILLING and ABLE to take ADVANTAGE of them? - a few here and there... Are they adequate ENOUGH for the target population? - Obviously NOT!

People should really get more knowledge on Facebook, Google and other US-based start-ups before saying such successes (in size and structure) can EASILY be replicated in Nigeria. That's nonsense. tongue
