President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has conferred on Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, the distinction of Grand Cordon in the Most Venerable Order of the Knighthood of the Pioneers. The President conferred the distinction Thursday, July 21, during an Investiture at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In remarks marking the occasion, the President thanked the Government and people of Nigeria for the support that country has provided Liberia during its recovery process. The President spoke of the sacrifices Nigeria has made over the years toward the restoration of peace in Liberia. President Sirleaf: "Nigeria was with us in our difficult days even before the United Nations intervened. You have lived with us; your people have died for us; you all have worked with us, prayed for us. As a result of that support, continuing over the years, then joined by other partners, Liberia is at peace and achieving its development goals." An Executive Mansion release says the President also spoke of Nigeria's continued support in its security sector reform and Liberia's overall development efforts. "We want to say thank you for what Nigeria has done for Liberia," the President said. Responding, President Jonathan thanked the Liberian leader, the government and people of Liberia for the honor, which he said signifies the abiding closeness and friendship existing between the two countries. The Nigerian President indicated that the honor was also indicative of the desire of Liberia and Nigeria to collaborate and to continue to work towards deepening those ties that happily bind the two countries. "Our common efforts and sacrifices are borne out of deep commitment to peace and security not only of our sub-region but the whole of Africa," the Nigerian leader noted. https://allafrica.com/img/csi/00171802_24f79945d0f3a4267084fc35845645ff/w510.jpg http://allafrica.com/stories/201107220348.html |
