How would he feel if someone told him that boerboel is not worth 50%purity? But that's the truth. If we can't handle the truth, we shld learn not to ask for the purity of our dogs...

BOUNTYDOG:
You should always learn to consider the scenario surrounding every issue and not use general measures to ts solution
@obstead200 D loss of appetite in ur dogs is obviously as a result of their recent unsupervised freedom,
I would never leave my pups unsupervised all night, only one nght I forgot to lock a litter n their crate and went to sleep,in days I was removing some sort of maggots from their body,"myasis"just from one night exploit.pups especially when patnered can be very destructive or suicidal.
As long as they spend tme with you, they already know who the family is and respect each of them accordingly no matter what the breed.
Bro, no offense intended, but myasis is not caused by unsupervised freedom. On the contrary, restricted movement causes myasis especially in pups when they wee and sleep at that same spot.

It might interest u to know that myasis occurs in humans too, kids to be precise. This happens when they spend most of their time in dampy area, sand, etc...

Myasis is a normal medical condition in most pups bred in Naija...

So as not to digress from the issue at hand, u advised restricted movement, I oppose this method.Instead of restricting their movement, you can help by removing all objects that can pose threat to the health of ur pups.

Cutting off ur head is not the solution to a headache...

I still maintain my grounds, if the guy's dogs have lost appetite, anything might be the cause, I'm sure it's not as a result of the free movement.

Cheers

That's called "myasis"...To prove this, he shld put palm oil at the tip of the lumps and press, a maggot-like stuff will come out...Myasis kills, he shld remove all the ones over their body, he can thereafter contact a good bet for antibiotics, such that can kill the eggs...

rotts are badoos naturally, i think you should start learning how to make them less violent.

Let him follow the advice na, it's his choice.

NL pet is one funny world. How can someone advice another to train an aggressive breed in such manner? Rotties belong to the top rated class for dog aggression. And even if we wanna domesticate them, there are ways around it, so that the dog will grow up with less aggression...

Someone now says u shld always lock up a 6month old rottie!!! Shoro Niyen!!!
PetsRe: My Vina Don't Eat Food by arcbay(m):

my puppy has such and I have been treating it with dog soap. Also her appetite dropped. What do I do?
Dog soap cannot cure myasis...you need to keep ejecting the "larvae " till their cycle ends. Meanwhile, contact ur VET, he needs to administer an antbiotic, that will kill the eggs within...

To eject the maggot-like larvae, apply palm oil at the tip of the lump, and press from the Base of the lump.

Note that myasis Results from dampy Areas, when ur pets sleep on/in dampy areas.

Bro, no offense intended, but please keep in mind that owning a dog is not a do or die affair. If you can't afford one presently, just chill till you're financially buoyant to buy and raise one...To be sincere, dog ownership demands a lot more than just the money involved in buying them...

Now I know part of the reasons why my oga Arcbay n Prodeegee dey vex when dey heear ROI for dog mata!

Why do people like cross breeding with rot?
One of my friends wanted to do same with his CO and we argued till I referred him to his vet but unfortunately the so called vet said it was a good idea. I jux faint
There's a whole lot to what people don't understand about breeding.

Dog breeding is not a function of how many dogs you have but a measure of their purity. I see a whole lot of people breed as much as 6-8 poorly bred dogs and call themselves breeders.

If what u can afford is just one dog, but from the purest bloodline, you'll be rated higher than those with 10impure breeds.

If there was an existence of a registered and certified Breed governing body like the AKC in Nigeria, I'm sure 90% of us won't qualify to be a member...

People need to understand the wrongs in cross-breeding...
PetsRe: Why People Dont Listen by arcbay(m):
That friend of his would come to NL saying he has boxhead pedigree puppies for sale, and some will still fall maga...I don't blame those breeding rubbish, I blame those that buy just because they come cheap.

If for example, he cross-breeds and produces like 8puppies and no one buys any from him, I'm sure he won't try it next time because he knows he still has 8growing dogs at home unsold.

I think it's better to tile the floors, easy to clean and wash, it also leaves little or no stench behind...

what do you say about picky dogs, this one is so picky that she won't even go back to her own leftover, tried many methods both fasting deworm monthly don't know wat else to do, sometimes eats once in two days, no matter how small the food is she won't finish it and she always looks healty, any idea of that too?
Then change her diet, prolly she doesn't like the food you feed her...try something more tasty and inviting...seun shared his recipe on a thread recently, can't remember which one precisely. His method sounds cool.

But basically, whatever u wanna feed your dog, imagine how you'd feel if you were served the same food. So give yourself what u can eat.

such dogs don't eat eba, rice, fufu etc(if that's what yougive it), they eat meat or fish. If buying from frozen stores is too expensive, try buying foetus from abattoir, it works well on dog with low appetite. I think there's a NLer named tobolos who sells foetus.
Be careful what you feed your dog...you should read up on the several diets before trying them out...there are several health conditions associated with feeding dogs on foetus, but those involved in selling them won't disclose this to u so as not to lose customers.

I was on foetus for a long while and I'm telling you from experience, foetus is not right for ur dogs.

Feed your dog what you can eat.

The best way is to have an agent over there that can run the logistics for you...it's usually difficult to run it from here, especially for a starter...

You first need to locate a genuine breeder and a breed of interest, then get your agent to go confirm for genuineness, your agent also will do the logistics as stated by naijabands on the thread, then send after satisfying all protocols...

No one will wanna show u the way, if there's nothing in it for them, basic nigerian mentality...

And if someone over there promises to run all logistics that u shld send money first, just be careful not to run into scammers...
PetsRe: Super Pet Sundays: What Does Your Dog Eat? by arcbay(m): 10:39am On Sep 27, 2015
I do raw egg mixed with sardine early in the morning, one egg per dog...this is vital for their coat and furs...

After then, breakfast is meant to be heavy, I do soaked dry food with Jojo canned food garnished with fish. The dry food is soaked in meat water or chicken water till the dry food absorbs all the water. Now tell me why ur dog won't wanna eat.

For dinner, I don't do heavy meals so as not to inject laziness into the dogs. I do just bones to keep them busy and active thru the night. A rich source of calcium which is essential for dogs...

Thanks for ur post especially ur extra point
I'm just like U, two caucasian on the second floor, not even a rented apartment but the coy quarters but never a single confrontation, though I hear the complains from gossips and packing shait is a norm.
I allow them roam the house and they have their poo spot, omo their urine can rust german floor(for itks I know the floor is no metal but it makes it look rusty)
I broke all rules of gettin a CO as a newbie and I've had no regrets whatsoever but I jog every morning to exercise them and myself and it saves me one poo packing
Yea bro, that's another method...if you develop an habit of walking ur dogs every morning and making it an habit, they will also develop the habit of holding themselves thru the night and poo during the walk, thereby saving u the stress of poo-packing in the morning.

Check her body and get back to me please.

@arcbay

The dog didn't bite the guy's wife cos they fed it raw meat. The dog bit her cos she was afraid simply cos she wasn't used to feeding the dog, a thing the dog sensed and moved to attack her.

Dogs attack when they are afraid, sense fear in a person or during danger, not cos of the kind of food they eat. If raw meat was the reason she was attacked by the dog, why did the dog stop at just bite instead of munching her flesh?

Raw meat is better than kibbles which contain chemicals used as preservatives. These chemicals can be cancerous. Most vets will vote against raw meat cos they know it will prevent their income due to the dog growing healthy from raw feeding. An healthy dog equals no visits to vet hospitals.
I'm aware of the advantages of raw feeding, but I wouldn't advice it for a newbie. If u don't get it right, it poses danger to canines.

Moreover, most people interprete Raw Feeding to mean feeding dogs on raw meat alone. This viewpoint has caused many problems in recent times.

am currently working on getting her to use a reserved field outside my compound but she is yet to even bend down there talk less of giving her praises for doing so.
even after eating heavily, she will hold it till she is able to get back in and use the balcony.
Oh OK, good for you then...Another living witness, lol...I hope the world sees your post and learn thru you...

family members and visitors, most times love the dog because she is super friendly.
at first during puppy stage it was easy removing the waste with tissue, occasionally, my hand will touch it and i will cringe.
with time, trust me, you will get over it.
i later figured it is less demanding using the broom and packer to sweep both.

i will recommend hypo over dettol anyday because it is cheaper and neutralizes the odor.
just perforate the hypo lid and spray it on the waste before packing.
you will be glad you did.

i bathe her every 2 or 3 weeks
Don't you feel it's better u potty train and house-train than going thru the troubles of poo-packing and cleaning all the time? Moreover, not everyone can go thru the troubles of doing poo cleaning, many would puke even at the sight of it.

being a dog owner in a rented apartment, i live on the 2nd floor with 5 other tenants

your best bet is to get the dog at puppy stage if you want to keep a large breed.
bringing in a huge dog with a fierce bark will likely kick-start serious beef from day 1.

be prepared to welcome un-realistic demands like "cant you put the dog in your room? she cries at night at the balcony", note that is you balcony they are complaining about.
what i do is give them an un-realistic promise that i am going to try it out

I have an elderly neighbor who usually have a hard time getting sleep likely cos of the old age.
if he isn't talking about my dog today, it will be my generator vibrating the whole building.

i simply apologize and enter my flat, and this works as he seem to have adapted.

For large breeds, you must NOT be the lazy or easily irritated person, FYI dog wastes stinks as much as humans
and most times bulkier than ours, so you must be ready to pack it twice a day.
If your dog understands how to communicate it, good for you then, be ready to walk her out each time you get the message.

Failure to decode the message on time can leave you a big mess and a sorry looking dog.

if you own a GSD, and you have a rugged apartment, be well prepared to sweep twice daily as they shed hairs like pregnant rabbits
if your apartment is tiled, good for you as it is easier to sweep.

Just because your dog hasn't eaten your laptop cables, or leather couch does not mean there is a god watching over them, she is just not bored to that point yet, she will eat them someday
mine will 'shoplift' everything ranging from yams in the kitchen to my designer boxers to the balcony for some chewing and tugging.
beating after the deeds just dont work because they wont get the message and will happily repeat it

Extras:
Just like the americans believe it is abuse when you beat your child, they also believe it is abuse when you beat your dog.
follow their lifestyle at your risk.

When i shout "hey", my dog stops whatever she is doing and reports to base (balcony)
failure to do so could get me angry, she does not like it when am angry.
Nice one bro...kudos...Do u stay alone? Within ur apartment I mean. If yes, how do u cope with complaints from family members and visitors? Pls share so others can learn from you...

How do u deal with the stench from d dog's wastes, his do u deal with the dog's body odour, how often do u give him a wash?

thanks,
however not that alien to dogs, just not a fan,
my family loved them so they are the main factor for getting one
since I will not be around all time, want one that I can trust my kids around. compound big enough to play and train one in
the cost of maintenance not an issue by God's grace.
the toy likes are however a no no for me,
feeling of providing sort of security another reason for getting one which the toy like ones would not provide.
feels I may not be able to train a Caucasian or GSD adequately as a first time full time dog owner.
NEW QUESTION:
what are the top 'tropicalised' breeds around?
thanks.
Closest breed with all these qualities would be a GSD, good with kids, highly trainable, guard instincts, fair temperament...these are common qualities of a good GSD but u should be aware there are certain rare cases where u might end up with an overly aggressive dog, here u need to develop strategies for handling, iron hand, reward and punishment etc...

I wouldn't advice a Caucasian for a newbie...cos caucs require much more...

You need to help the dog understand that you will only show attention when it's calm. I've had a very playful dog before but I also learnt not to reward it with a hug pat or even eye contact which it's seeking until it's calm. I even reward it with a treat when it finally gets it that I want her to sit and wait for my instructions. In time it got the message and when it comes along tail wagging like a flag in full sail it takes a sit position in no time to know what's up.
Like mentioned above it takes consistency and repeats to align with the expected. That's where you as leader come in. You must show you know what and how in a consistent firm manner. I remember when I tried to teach it that it goes for its food on my command. It sat at other end of room and I moved over about 10...12 feet away. Initially it would come at the food in no time. Then it would wait longer and take a step or two after a few minutes each. But I would return it to the starting position each time to start the exercise all over. In a few weeks of constantly reinforce the expected behaviour it would sit at the designated position and wait for an hour or more until it got the command to finally come. Two things it finally got. Come to the food when I want you to. Secondly I'm entitled to my space. Mutual respect.
So I can have me time in front of the TV or over a pile of papers and it is content to sit quietly a few feet away until told to do something else. Mind you it is up to listen to any strange sound around and about in an alert manner.
Well said bro

Dear Folex,

I feel you shld have asked before putting up the pic to make awareness for the owerri dogwalk. The lagwalk was the sole initiative of the nigeriank9group founded by 8 members of which I am a part. The lag project was sponsored by Binggo, the ibadan walk by JOJO...but those projects remain the sole concept of the Nigeriank9group...

I'll appreciate if u don't make it look as if the project was binggo's...

Anyways, nice hearing about the owerri walk, please let us know if there's any way we could be of help.
