uchpanila:Do not see dog training as a do or die affair, training is a continuous thing. You don't expect to teach a dog a new trick in one day and expect him to hear. You need to be consistent with ur methods. If your dog is playful, that doesn't mean he can't learn. The truth is that a happier dog assimilates faster than sad and nd dejected one. Whatever trick you want to teach him or whatever commands, just keep teaching him with the hope that he's learning and I promise you in due time he will catch up. |
peaceland:For a starter, I'll advice you start with a toy breed. Toy breeds like the lhasa are well known for their low maintenance. They don't eat much, don't poo or pee much, they're trainable, good around kids and can be successfully bred indoors. It's better u start with a toy breed, after sometime you can get a heavier breed... A baby learns to crawl before he walks, afterwhich he runs...but then, learn to crawl first... |
When choosing a pet, you shouldn't just try buy any breed, u shld define why u need the breed in question, it's availability, adaptability to weather conditions, maintenance, the environment where u intend housing him, your time schedule, amongst several other factors. You need strike a balance between all and see how well the breed will cope with you before getting him. For example, someone that lives in maiduguri, and has absolutely no time and facilities for maintaining and raising a caucasian...I will describe such person as insane. |
Any questions about raising a dog can come in here and we'll try as much as possible to provide answers and solutions to ur problems... Thank you |
lacicrips:Like you said, and which I agree with, socialisation is the key. Your dog is what you train him to be. Even the most aggressive breed could be bred as a pet if you know the tricks... I've seen a lot of friendly and accommodating pitbulls as I've also seen some pet breeds who are as aggressive as hell itself, it all depends on the owner. |
Well said bro, never better...I wish people could only follow these strategies. Only then can we improve the relationship between dog and man. We need to strike a balance between the two. A time will come, when even the most aggressive pitbull will walk on the streets and people will see him as a normal dog. It saddens me each time I walk my dogs and people freak out or pass annoying comments. |
obstead200:30minutes every morning and night is enough to drive home ur point. Take this routine daily and see d magic. |
younghartz:Yea students too...Way back in school, I went with one of my dogs. She stayed exclusively indoors and wouldn't mess up my room till I let her out. It got to a point everyone wanted to be friends with me just to get the love of my cute dog. Ladies would come to my house uninvited begging to walk my dog, gifts poured in from all corners. Lol, the sweet good old days. |
And to everyone, please Note that my methods and strategies are not backed up by science or some theories, they are only from experience I've gained over the years. |
obstead200:You need to be careful not to confuse them. You can only slightly scold them at the restricted place they messed up, take them with u to the new poo zone but don't scold them there. Just make them understand that's the new poo zone. That should work... Tying them to that zone for a while usually works too...Not for a long time, but time enough for them to realise the gravity of their offense. Since it will mean outside the compound in your own case, then maybe u tie and watch them from a distance. |
Hello fellow dog lovers. A number of questions have been flying around for sometime now, a number of problems have also sprung up over the years due to owing and raising dogs within a rented apartment with many neighbours, blocks of flats, estates, shared compound, etc I feel we should use this medium to teach one another how to be a responsible dog owner. As the saying goes..."there is no bad dog, but bad owners" I feel i should help in the little way i can and i also implore all experts in the house, dog lovers and owners alike to please share their views and contribute their quota. Before now, in my younger years, i raised several generation of dogs within a rented apartment with neighbours from several cultures with several beliefs, without any complaints or problems from them, not because my neighbours were so accommodating, but because i understood the trick behind it and i could play my games right. It has always worked for me, it worked for others over the years. if it hasn't or isn't working for you, you need to check yourself, check your methods and strategies, and maybe u need to borrow from the strategies in here. Raising a dog in such environments with many tenants involves 3 Golden Rules: 1. Understand your neighbours. Human beings fall into 3 categories with respect to their preference for dogs. They are the dog lovers, those that hate dogs or freak out at the sight of dogs and those that are indifferent about dogs. 2. Understand your dog. Build a chemistry with your dog, understand his boundaries and limits, know his limits and limitations, unravel his strengths and weaknesses, and try to work on suck weaknesses. 3. Understand yourself. If you can match step 1 with step 2, and logically create a balance between both steps, then you can successfully raise your dog in such a compound. You need to work on yourself as a better dog owner and not for monetary benefits u might accrue on the dog. For those that wanna venture into dog ownership without any prior experience, it is best your choice of breed depends on Step 1. Your choice of breed to buy should depend on the preference of your neighbours. If your neighbours are dog lovers, then you can get buy and raise any breed. If your neighbours fall into the category of those who hate dogs or easily freak out at the sight of dogs, then a pet breed will be advisable, Probably a lhasa apso, samoyed, chihuahua, maltese, etc. Getting a pet breed will change your perception about dogs. I once raised a maltese and even the alhaji in my compound then would stop to say hi to her before he leaves for work every morning, neglecting their religious beliefs about dogs. Having done all these, u need to consider Shelter and Feeding for your dog, where he would live and this is also dependent majorly on Step 1 and partly on Step 2. Shelter for your dog involves one of 2 ways, either he stays within the House or outside the House. Depending on your choice, staying within the house involves you potty-train him, a method i posted on a thread this morning. If you understand your dog, there's a way you can house-train him not to mess up the house, he only does his poo thingy when u let him out. I know quite a number of people who currently use this method. Smileysmiles is a living witness to this method. If you choose to make your dog stay outside the House, you don't necessarily need to lock him up in a cage at all times, that's kind of inhumane. By doing so, you will only end up breeding a beast. Locking up a dog brings out the aggression in them, they feel they are bred to be security dogs and considering the fact that you live with many tenants, if you accidentally let out your dog and it sees one of the tenants, trouble ensues. That's the situation of the recent case of 2 dogs that tore through a kid's skull in Igando part of lagos recently. My advice is this, if some circumstances can't permit you to allow ur dog stay indoors, you can get a perimeter fence and locate it somewhere within your compound and locate the dog's cage within the perimeter fence with the door always open. A perimeter fence are these wired netted fences that are used in local shops to secure the outer part of shops. You can get something of that sort with a size of like 12 by 8 within the compound. Here the dog has a chance to run around the entire perimeter and has greater freedom than just being locked up in a cage like a prisoner. Feeding also determines your dog's nature. As the saying goes, "An hungry dog is an aggressive dog". You must consider this fact alongside the fact that u wouldn't want ur hungry-angry dog to pounce on neighbours. Also the nature of feeding matters. a friend who stays in a rented apartment once told me he does "Raw feeding", Raw meat to be precise. i laughed and told him he'll end up breeding a monster out of his dog. A week later, he were both out of town on a dog prog, and his pregnant wife called to tell us the dog pounced on her and bit her when she was about to serve him food. Just imagine, a 7 months old dog o. I just thanked God it happened to his wife and not the neighbours. Mehn, too much story jhor, please i stand to be corrected and critisized, your inputs are needed here, contribute in whatever way you can. Let us be responsible dog owners and together we can change people's wrong and misplaced judgements about dogs. Together we can build a better canine society. |
obstead200:This is quite simple but time consuming, you will need to persevere to make them understand this. like I said, dogs are like a deaf and dumb kid, they learn thru gestures, expressions and above all, experience and repetition. You need to make them understand what u need them to do. To achieve ur aims, imagine you are a dog, put urself in their shoes. If you were them, how best and how quickly can u understand things... I've used a lot of tactics over the years and it has always worked for me. Just follow the below steps and be consistent with it, let's see how it helps: 1. Anytime they poo in the restricted zone, drag them by the collar, show them what they've done, shove their heads in the poo if need be (lol), pack up the mess and let them see you do it. 2. Still dragging them by the collar and the mess in the other hand, drop them both in the desired poo zone, both dog and poo. Chain the dog in that zone for a while, wash up the initial spot they messed up, preferably with a detergent or bleach. 3. A little slap or shout of commands can help drive home ur point too. 4. Try this within a month and watch the magic... Having written all these epistle, I hope this helps anyone reading this post... MAGIC BEHIND THE TRICK The essence of step 1 is to show them what they are being punished for. Packing up the mess in their presence shows them u don't like it being done at that spot. The essence of step 2 is to show them the preferred poo zone. Chaining the dog there teaches him that's his punishment each time he repeats the crime. Naturally, dogs hate to be tied to a spot, so he understands the punishment. Washing up the restricted zone is to erase all traces of their poo. If you've noticed, dogs sniff around for signs of their mess before they drop their stuff around that same area. It's like marking a territory for themselves., you see dogs sniffing around and hovering in circles before they poo, that's what they look out for. So using a detergent or bleach will erase their traces. The essence of step 3 is to show them how angry you are and that you ain't happy with them at the moment. Dogs love attention and will do anything to be in ur good books, so they won't wanna do anything to bring a repeat of the anger. |
To know the purity of a dog especially GSDs, look out for: 1. The orientation of their ears. They don't just stand erect, there's this particular shape and alignment they pick. 2. The shape of their heads. 3. Facial masks. 4. Proportionality of their limbs to their body. 5. Colour, Coat, length and thickness of furs, etc Just read up on all these features or betterstill, look up pictures of pedigree GSDs and compare. If u have anything short of those of the pedigree pics, then you don't have a pure bred GSD. Please Note that I didn't even check out the pictures u posted. I only gave u clues to work on. So I wouldn't know if ur dogs are pure or not. |
I'm used to that. People call me weird, my family and relatives inclusive. Some castigate me for having a bath with a dog, some say I treat my dogs like kids, some even think there's more to it, prolly spiritual... To top it up, stray dogs on my street do meet up at my gate every morning, scratching on the paints...But the truth is that I'll rather make friends with and trust dogs than humans, cos dogs are the only known friends who can't betray you... Each time I leave for work every morning, I take a whole lot of dry food with me, pouring a handful to every stray dog on my street. They know the time I leave for work, and if I'm late, they wait for me at my gate. So my street peeps who don't understand this feels my spirituality attracts dogs and prolly there's more to it. To me I don't send, let them talk!!! I gave each of those dogs a name. Upon seeing me, they walk down with me even when their owners try call them back, they don't bulge. They know me even from a distance. They guard my gate at night leaving their own separate homes. Now, that's what I call true love... |
That's a German Shar pei, very rare breed. Please take a very good care of her |
That's a German Shar pei...Very good breed, take good care of her please |
Stancrus:I beg to disagree bro, the Korean mastiff has been in existence since forever. It's a product of a cross between a french mastiff and a neapolitan mastiff... Please ask around for the stability of its temperament before venturing into this. Also be careful, people might offer u a neapo in place of this breed you want. And let me correct this, it's called "dosa" and not "tosa". The Japanese tosa is a different breed entirely |
Prodeegee:You can't blame ur dog for a show of territoriality, it's in their blood... Spanking won't and can't solve this. All you need do is to teach your dog that the new dog or family member is welcome and is also part of the family... There are so many ways to go about this...Respect the new member and let ur dog see you in the act...Taking them together on walks too does a lot of magic...Give them a common enemy to battle, lizards, rats, strangers etc... There exists so many ways but I wouldn't wanna bore us with my post... |
Nice thread prodeegee... To start with, u need to define the offense... Our dear canine friends can be likened to a deaf and dumb kid, they learn thru gestures and expressions u teach them... There's this saying, "if u don't train them, dont blame them"... Firstly, u need to check if this offense wasn't instigated by u...Such offenses are not punishable. For example, you lock ur pet up for the greater part of the day and u expect him not to poo in his kennel, that's not a punishable offense... Secondly, dogs learn by repetition, you can only punish him for an offense which you've corrected him for on several occassions...such punishment shouldn't be to the extreme, you need to understand ur dog and don't get them confused... Spanking dogs isn't advisable, it doesn't drive home your point to them... Although there are some cases where u notice ur dog is becoming too rebellious and requires a iron hand to show him you're the boss, but this shouldn't be to the extreme too, otherwise you'll end up breeding a dummy, a dog that sees u and starts peeing on himself... Enough of my epistle, I hope this helps... |
And seun would believe he has a mod for this section? I doubt he understands the logical meaning of "pets"...someone roasts and eats up pets and yet he's been celebrated... I'll be damned!!! |
And so I watched the whole saga till d end... In my opinion, I believe their troubles goes way personal and this whole issues about either of them being a fraud is just out of point... My advice to them both, please settle ur differences out of pet land and leave us out of it. Whoever has an allegation of fraud against Bobby shld come out in the open. Yea true the dude is a little bit off in his CRM strategies but that is not enough point to judge him, that's his own way of doing things... If younglawyer can't point out the particular fraudulent act of bob, then I'll say this matter is dead already... And to seun, just so u know, u have no mods for this section!!! |
Obviously in the genepool. |
The moment we all drop our ego and accept that we are all learners, the better for this section. I've noticed the constant power struggle in here...Those who regularly share knowledge have been picked on and insulted on several occasions. This discouraged many others who feel lying low is better cos that way they can't get burnt. I don't think we should apportion any blame to any Mod neither shld we hold seun responsible for anything... We need to check ourselves, each and every one of us... |

dorcky: dorcky:I still stand my ground...PLS GO BACK TO SCHOOL...EDUCATION IS THE KEY Plus I see no relevance in the documents you just posted...I didn't ask you to send any in the first instance, maybe you need to go re-read the lines. What has those documents got to do with proving if you're real or not? Take my advice, go back to school!!! |
