oloyede252:The problem here is you guys think you have monopoly over truth. With a closed mind & air of unfounded superiority, you go about spewing stuff that only originated at University of Ibadan & OAU, with no historical detail/truth behind it. Lately, people think that numerical strength is equal to historical supremacy. That's only in politics & propaganda, not history. See, Benin was pretty centralised from around 40BC. Nothing like various Yoruba clans fighting incessant civil wars, one trying to outdo the next. Therefore Benin, could settle down with Empire building from about 1440 AD. Not just a Kingdom that it was for about 1480 years prior. Therefore, to the Benins (not Bini as often misspelled), have a consistent history. Sang in folks songs every day, told by traditional poets & praise singers daily. Immortalised in artworks. Still in museums worldwide today. Consistently. |
jobgbemi:A bigger point of correction. Imadoduwa, interchangeable with Izoduwa, was Ekaladerhan, a banished Benin Prince, became Ododuwa. He was the son of the last Ogiso called Owodo. Ogisos were also called Oba-godo (being title of first Ogiso in about 40BC) of Igodomigodo. So Oba title has been used in Benin since about 2055 years. When this was discovered in Benin, Ekaladerhan was requested to return to Benin by the Nobles, especially Chiefs Oliha, Ero, Ezomo, Edohen & Eholo-Nire. But he refused. Instead sending his son, Oranmiyan (Omonoyan or beloved child/pampered child). Oranmiyan stayed only long enough to sire a child before leaving, who became Oba Eweka II. Ododuwa never have hegemony over Benin from Ife. Perhaps his near death experience and aristocratic intrigues/politics in Benin didn't encourage him to return. Instead preferring the relatively calm Ife. In Benin, history is very vibrant. Oloton was a relative that came from Ife with Oranmiyan. The family is still in Benin and head of the family is Chief Oloton of Benin. He's the keeper of Royal Ancestral shrine. This family definitely know their history and relationship with Ododuwa, Oranmiyan & Eweka I. |
brownlord:Pure nonsense my brother. This same behaviour made this very Oba Akenzua spearhead creation of Mid-Western region. He had enough of people trying to use numerical advantage to oppress. Just barely 50 years after end of Benin Empire, whose historical reach, East & West all knew. Oba Akenzua went to King's College Lagos, spoke impeccable Yoruba. He generally took Yorubas as cousins. Until his fondness and amity was taken for granted. |
pulsa:The whole Bible story began to be written only after the Egypt educated Moses did so. Any surprise? The very similarity between Egyptian creation, Horus & Osiris & Bible stories is more than coincidence. I studied the Bible under some of the best theologians/eschatologists of this age. Including the most senior Jewish Rabbi in the country where I live. We Africans take everything literally, as though we don't digest what we read. ![]() |
pulsa:But religion is mind control technique before na. ![]() In my local Anglican church, if not for Afro-Caribbean immigrants, it would have turned club house since. We have less than 10% whites attending it. ![]() Except maybe USA, whites have long moved on from religion. ![]() |
MrPresident1:That has long been settled. Ododuwa was a Benin Prince, banished and wandered through forest, first reaching Owo area before Ife. Benin is roughly 70 miles east/South East of Owo, Owo is roughly 70 miles East of Ife. Hence Ekaladerhan entered Ife from the East! But Yoruba somehow think some mythical figure from Mecca it is. ![]() If Ododuwa was Benin man in the first place, how can Benin Royal family be Youruba? Benin and Yoruba people had lived where they are now over 4,000 years before Ododuwa. Even if Ododuwa was Yoruba & Benin Royal family is Yoruba origin (which it is not) how does that make all Benins Yoruba? British Royal family is German, are all British German? Even though Anglo-Saxons left Germany & Denmark in 5th century AD, you cannot call them German. Swedish Royal family is French, are Swedes therefore French? Mexico once had an Austrian King, did it make all Mexicans Austrian? Former Greek Royal family is German-Danish, are all Greeks now German-Danish? Just because Benin gave up its rights to provinces in Eastern Yorubaland, Delta & elsewhere as a British pre-condition to restore the monarchy in 1914 doesn't mean people should change history. |
Born2Breed:My brother, you wonder how impeccably educated people like Yoruba simply discard science and logic to cling to mythical stuff like someone turning into a river. Very amusing I tell ya. ![]() |
TOEZOFFICIAL:You know when something involves church relatives attend, e get as e be. Going many kilometres all the way to see dad and begging with my neighbours of over 10 years made it more difficult. You know those people that you cannot refuse things easily. Chronic debtors are very shameless and crafty people. ![]() |
Nice one |
nonstan:People just use words anyhow. They just make one's heart jump by using grammar they're not sure with it means. Thank God no lives lost. Speedy recovery to any injured passengers. |
TOEZOFFICIAL:Please see it from landlords' perspective too. I hope most people want to be landlord one day. A man and his family from the church we pitied to give a flat to rent cheap messed up. Family appeared decent in church. Instead of agreed initial 6 months rent, on moving in they pleaded to be allowed to pay 3 months first and 3 months by month end. By month end, stories began. Days to each month end, the man will not come home again. He will call his kids to come collect chop money somewhere in town. When paying, he was paying small bits as if crayfish or maggi money. In the end, they stayed like 7 months without pay. Though I had rough means at hand to kick them out, I used legal means to do so. Spending another 15k or so in the process. Now, will such make a landlord nice or strict? |
rawpadgin:For me, bolded is the main matter. Now, from observing around me, step kids of that age, above 2 or 3 years old (b4 you marry their mum) can be a problem. Yes, they are sweet now. But they know very well that you're not their dad. With time, from teenage years, you will struggle to be their dad. Unless you're very rich, then they will gladly see you as dad. If you're just average, even if you spend most of your income looking after them, they will always feel that you favoured your biological kids (their half-siblings). I know several families where the stepkids don't even speak to their stepdad now, some didn't even attend their stepdad's funeral. These are people we all witnessed how their stepdads toiled to raise them in our neighbourhood growing up. I also know of a couple of cases where stepdads were rich but not really generous like the average ones. The kids even took their stepdad's surname. Being identified with a rich man is cool. If you're going to toil to raise kids, raise yours. They will have no doubt about your love for them. Till the end. |
dontea:And reason is because they didn't come from Yoruba. We are at least educated people. Anthropological & philological research do not put Yoruba & Benin in same language group, though both are East Kwa/Volta-Niger languages (West-Benue-Congo) of Niger-Congo language family like Igbo, Fon, & Ewe in Ghana. Yoruba & Benin diverted from a proto language long ago, almost when Ewe, Igbo, & Fon did. Proximity meant certain words were assimilated both ways. Benin people like me with known links to Yorubaland are very proud of it and kept a lot of the culture. Anybody with royal blood knows they are related to Ooni of Ife. Benin was an Imperial City and Igbo, Yoruba, Ijaw and many others from provinces came to live there. Benin is not so much a tribe but a nation with common history & culture. Most Yoruba people who argue here online have never lived in Benin and know nothing about the place. While Yoruba see Ododuwa as some superhuman mythical being, the Benins (not Binis, such exists not despite widespread misspelling), see him as a real person, a Benin prince who suffered adversity/injustice, anguish, pain, desperation, hopelessness until providence finally smiled on him in Ife. To make him superhuman takes away from his suffering as a human being and even dehumanises him. |
9jacrip:Lol. At least Europeans who followed Oba of Benin to war to observe have different account in their diary. Even some Owo historians admit that even though Benin defeated Owo, Owo kept much of its autonomy. Now the level of leniency when negotiating terms of surrender depends on various things link blood relationships/previous intermarriage, bitterness of the war, etc. Except you have a new research finding that Benin wasn't an empire, your attempt at trying to reduce Benin greatness and influence will make no dent at all. Please bring forward your new research. Benin knew how to fight war, what was important, what could be maintained in terms of topography, corridor of supplies, etc. While go fighting in insignificant areas or opening up large war fronts? Napoleon & Hitler, though almost 150 years apart, both made one and same mistake: Opening up a gargantuan war front in bitterly cold Russia. It decimated their soldiers mercilessly in winter. For a relatively modest core Benin tribe, it needed soldiers from its imperial provinces and paid mercenaries to fight. Cleverness in choosing battle fronts was paramount. Benin & Oyo were the only really influential empires in the South/South-Eastern part of West Africa, from about the middle of 15th century towards end of 19th century. Both (Oyo & Benin) set their boundary at Otun, which is now part of Northern Ekiti. FYI, I have blood links to both Owo & Benin. |

proxillin:In Benin people know very well who Ododuwa is. He was in fact the son of the last Ogiso/Obagodo/King of Igodomigodo as Benin was called then. His name was Ekaladerhan. Ododuwa was his regnal name "Imadoduwa". A name he chose when made leader of Ife. Imadoduwa means "I did not miss my destiny". Simply because he was wrongly banished from Benin. His banishment was concocted by his stepmother. Fact is history has a way of repeating itself. An Alake is just making another careless statement. One that I believe the Alafin will not take lightly. Benin has its own history. Very consistent, even before Ododuwa. Each ethnic nationality should be allowed to write its own history. Yorubaland existed at least 4,000 years before Ododuwa. My family descends from Ododuwa and my distant relatives seat on thrones from SW to Delta, to Western Igboland & Beyond. I'm a proud Yoruboid Edo man. I have more reasons to be objective than you. As I have a link to both sides. You on the other hand only want to put one ethnic group on top, sacrificing scientific research, truth and logic. The idea of my ancestor coming from Arabia in a mythical way is outrageous. At this point, far more reasonable to leave Oba of Benin out of Yoruba Kingship supremacy war. In Benin, despite the first Ogiame/Olu of Warri being son of Oba Olua of Benin, Benin doesn't go on about how the Olu is under Oba of Benin or not. In modern times, supremacy battle makes no sense. Each king should endeavour to bring development to his people. |
proxillin:This was written by whom? While Benin Royal family recognise common ancestry with Ooni of Ife, Benin people are very different people. Linguistically and culturally despite cross-cultural assimilation over the past 800 years. Independent research in philology & anthropology has shown that. Though some Yoruba scholars have tried using their early educational advantage to foster hegemony over Benin. Any good student of history will remember that a careless statement by another Alake of Egbaland in the Western Parliament led to Oba Akenzua of Benin with politicians from old Benin & Warri province walking out of the parliament. From there, the determination to create a Mid-West region hardened. |
mrbillz:Olowo of Owo is way ahead of Alake in my book. Historically and otherwise. I think people relegate Olowo because of being in Eastern fringes of Yorubaland. |
staaan:Ok, very detailed assuming nothing is left out. And hopefully no brown envelop required. ![]() Plus 70k survey plan takes additional expenses per acre to well over 420k! Chai! Hmmmm. The commissioner of lands matter makes things a bit uncertain though. Thanks very much Sir. |
PresVA:My dear, Bill Clinton cheated, John Major Cheated. King David & Solomon had loads of wives & concubines. The day I found out that one very decent & gentle guy was cheating for years with a lady near my house, I gave up. He has two kids with his very pretty wife. She's a very good friend of many years too. She doesn't know till day. I bet she'd swear he doesn't cheat. You can accuse me of normalising it but fact is......while some men may never cheat, any man, poor, rich, famous or average can cheat. By the way statistically: 50% of first born kids actually belong to another man outside. 30% of all kids belong to another man outside. So women too are cheating with a "face-me-I-face you" neighbour, colleague/boss at work, old flame or sugar daddy, old course mate, old lecturer, NYSC mate, etc. Social media has suddenly given housewives access to loads of men from far and near. Same for men. ![]() |
NCA members will be disappointed. No name. ![]() |
swtcharissa:My dear, na luck o. Violent men and women may not display the streak initially. Especially distant relationships. One in PH another in Kaduna. The couple of weeks & days normally spent together can appear very blissful indeed. Also until marriage, some people are pretty relaxed. They start seeing their spouse as a personal property after signing the dotted line. Hidden characters can begin to manifest after the kids come, when romance has to stay at the backburner often. And don't forget the significant number of people with undiagnosed psycho-medical conditions, exacerbated by socio-economic challenges/hardship. |
staaan:Thanks Sir. |
TruthisGOD:Some Northerners said Northerner money was invested in ND to get oil. That the North owns the oil. Where did $3 billion spent seeking oil up North come from? If by chance they discover oil up North, will it be owned by ND because ND oil money was used to fund it? May God let the North discover huge oil deposits, or any lucrative mineral so that they can break away. ![]() |
INTROVERT:Long time. Latest 1966 after Kaduna Nzeogwu coup. They didn't muster enough courage to secede then because of oil. UK & USA persuaded them that the North needed Southern oil. Whereas UK & US only saw North as "mumu" and Northern leaders could be used more easily. Their official memos say clearly so. They feared Zik & or Awo running Nigerian/oil affairs. Feared a big chance of linking up with Soviet Union during that cold war era. Like Nkrumah, Lumumba & others did. ![]() |
sayyid:But tribalism & self-loathing won't let us. |
ziddy:Diplomacy is a key skill. The maybe 0.0005% that may commit crime should not be a key issue for defining Nigerians. Nigerians in Nigeria commit far more crime: land fraud, bribery/corruption, forged documents, illegal driving/obtaining licence, dangerous driving, election rigging/electoral fraud, tax evasion, perjury, breach of public peace, environmental pollution, robbery, ritual killing, jungle justice, teacher sleeping with minor student, abuse of power, domestic violence, abusing/injuring housemaid, assault, contract inflation, etc. People go to jail for far lesser crime in Europe/America than deeds Nigerians just do casually and take as normal. Even the president of Nigerian senate is going to court for a criminal trial. And still presiding jeje. Where else does that happen? I know dozens of Nigerians in UK. I cannot recollect anyone that has been to prison. The ratio of Nigerians in UK prison is not higher than the ratio of "lowest socio-economic" class whites to middle class/rich white people in prison. That is, whites with a similar social deprivation as some struggling immigrants have similar or even higher percentage committing crimes. David Cameron now wants to investigate why more black people who commit similar crimes as white people get sent to prison than whites. Basically a black person can be jailed for doing same crime as a white guy who never goes to prison. |
Strahovski1:But he should use his head first....before getting married. Some women can be funny. Not all women you make sacrifices for deserve it. Just when you give up your mum & others for your woman, she messes up. Just ensure your mum is not seeing what you cannot see apart from "beauty & class". @ OP, If she's really WORTH it, go ahead. Otherwise your mum will later say "I told you". |
This val thing has become very annoying. We Afro copy oyinbo things and just bastardise it. ![]() |

What a gargantuan metamorphose sartorial saddonicality-Hon. Patrick. ![]() |
If that is true it possibly means that at some point in the distant past, Yoruba people must have been exposed to Lassa virus. Perhaps even a Lassa epidemic. Those who survived built immunity against it. The gene pool of resistant people gradually spread among the people. However, immigrants from Benin empire, Idah, Benue, the North and other places intermarrying with Yoruba my have descendants with lesser or no immunity among current Yoruba people. |
