Super1Star:Fact is Benin gave Ododuwa to Ife. So whatever returned from Ife was originally BENIN. My own analysis from Benin history is guess work while your own spurious claims are gospel truth, right? ![]() Obviously you were the midwife who attended to Ododuwa's mother in labour, and you should know the truth authoritatively. ![]() Dude, no ogboju tactics will work here. You have your history, Benin have theirs and will remain so till the end of time. |
Super1Star:Read my previous posts dude. How the name Izoduwa, interchangeable with Imadoduwa came about. Very consistent from earliest times. Benin has been pretty centralised from a very long time and history of that single monarchy very consistent. No rival ruling houses in Benin trying to create stories to try bolster their entitlement/claim. Even today, nothing like court cases involving succession as it litters some tribes in 9ja. Or where obas are deposed by court or government arbitrarily. Makes Benin pretty unique for consistency. Benin never claim to be first to do brass work. But whenever Benin started, it was done to the highest level possible anywhere in the world then. Or is there anywhere that is claimed? Please show me. Metal works began in Africa thousands of years ago. Has been done in many places. Benin people don't wake up one morning to make any claims. They usually respond to very amateur, ridiculous and futile attempts by egotistic tribalists to rewrite history. There are some who find it hard to swallow the fact that in each talk about African civilisation, Benin is always one of the first to be mentioned. And when foreign documentary makers like BBC narrate African History, a prominent place is given to Benin Empire. Try as they may to detract, history is there for discerning minds. Benin people are pretty comfortable in their own skin. All the issues Nigeria has today and the little role for minorities was a major reason Benin resisted Britain to keep its empire. When that failed, Benin realised the disaster and historical setback it will be. So no surprise that all kind of people want to rewrite history now, even backwater vassals of yore. ![]() |
2sex:Tor. Back in the day, a housewife with several kids was sponsored by her hubby to read a professional course at university. Being too poor growing up, she couldn't afford tertiary education. This economically successful but less educated guy married her and cleaned her up. After getting her degree she moved on with another man. Suddenly! Her relatives & in-laws begged her to stay, all in vain, she didn't listen. No reason given for her action. Everybody was shocked. A few years down the line, her new man dumped her. Now she came begging to return to former hubby for the "kids' sake. ![]() Her former hubby refused, because it's taboo in his culture. Now approaching 60, she has been up & down without a loving man in her life. ![]() |
Ucheosefoh:Before nko? He should have secured a good paying job himself in that company, even if not engineering if not qualified for that. OP thought the girl would be grateful and so be faithful, for wia? The vast majority of girls would behave that way or at least constantly remind you through words or action how inferior you're earning less money. Even if your uncle or dad owns the company she earns good money from. |
holamiday:You know in 9ja, we dey carry somethings for head dey trip for them too much. Maybe na widespread poverty. Time was when Blackberry dey trip people. I have never regarded this kinda Hummer more than 1970s/80s open-body Landrover Defender. But some will say it's because you don't have one. Hummer H2/H3 you can now buy from about N1.3m to N4m , around 10 or 11 years old, depending on how well-used/maintained. |
OBAGADAFFI:Oba Erediauwa did a nationwide thank-you tour after coronation. NATIONWIDE, up to Sokoto! We also have pics of him in my uncle's palace, the Duke of my town. ![]() Having said that, Benin Royal family & every one with even a drop of royal blood hold Ife (called Uhe in Benin) in very very high esteem. The reason is simple. Ife gave refuge to the Benin prince, Ekaladerhan, who became Ododuwa. Otherwise, the Ogiso dynasty that began in about 40BC would have been lost. With the kindness & generosity of Ife people, Benin has a royal family stretching back to 40BC, the same year the Roman senate appointed Herod as king of Judaea! The only major break was between 1100 AD & 1169 AD. The current dynasty began in 1169 AD. |
diadem10:Ok. Let me consult ifa: Okan meji... Odu mefa... Ah, good news. Ifa says there's hope. You will know more when you open your mind and read wider. ![]() |
diadem10:Lol. I have explained that here on NL over many years. Even in my previous few posts yesterday & today. If you genuinely want a civilised debate & for comparison, see my previous posts. If you prefer to wallow in ignorance, cursing & swearing, don't bother. I see a very poorly informed person and ill-mannerism in your angry outburst. ![]() Making a valid point is not by behaving like motor park agbero. ![]() |
OBAGADAFFI:Well, in Benin history his name was Omonoyan. Means beloved or pampered child. Very common name in times old. Can you tell me how popular or unique the name "Oranmiyan" was around middle of 12th Ife and what did the name mean then? We learn daily. If you read my previous posts here on NL, I have mentioned Omonoyan before. In any case, even if he decided to name him a Yoruba name, it could just be political. To strengthen claim to Ife Royalty. Remember that Oranmiyan's mother wasn't a Benin Woman. Possibly one of the elite-born ladies of Ife. For example, in Benin, Oranmiyan married a princess, the daughter of the Enogie/Duke of Egor. Egor today is a local govt area in Benin City and the Duke of Egor is still very much a senior duke of Benin Kingdom. Benin Dukes, with exception of VERY VERY few ancient ones, are all princes and descendants of princes of Benin Kingdom. I write long essays here for the benefit of those who don't know the rich & detailed history of Benin. |
OBAGADAFFI:Oranmiyan was son of Benin Prince Ekaladerhan who became Ododuwa. Oduduwa did not magic from Any Arabia (not even China or Vietnam ). He came from much closer: Benin or Igodomigodo as it was called then. |
Super1Star:Well, sorry. Unlike those who believe in mythical coming from Arabia, whether dad was Lamidi or Labaran; in Benin, people believe more practical stuff. 70 miles journey Benin through bush or tarred road to Owo & another 70 miles to Ife is quite reasonable. About coming from Arabia with broom abi magic parachute, well, sounds ridiculous in an enlightened age. ![]() Even in modern times, with aeroplane and ship, I can't remember Saudi Arabia govt using Osun Defender advert to look for missing Saudis in Ife. ![]() A missing Benin guy turning up in Ife won't be out of the ordinary. ![]() |
Jesusloveyou:Well, that makes Benin's achievement more fascinating. First, it was by sheer organisation, a bit like small Rome did, to have an empire as Benin did. Benin didn't have a large population. So needed provincial citizens and paid mercenaries to fight wars. Europeans of that time recorded that Benin could easily raise 100,000 soldiers for war, no mean feat. Therefore, there were notable Igbo, Esan, Urhobo military leaders in Benin army. The seafarers (Ozigue) who transported goods and soldiers through rivers, Atlantic Ocean and lagoons were Ijaw citizens of the empire. In fact, establishing Eko Colony of Lagos would have been very difficult. Reaching Cotonou, Lome & Accra would have been near impossible without the Ijaw. So arrived modern Ga people in Osu area of Accra. I'm yet to see any educated/enlightened Ga person in real life who disputes this, including my in-laws. It was an imperial effort, with different tribes. Nobody was forced to speak Edo/Benin language, people had freedom. Take for example, Benin was always conscious of low population. Several means were used to prevent migration from Benin. Like facial marks, body tattoos. Also today, we hear of Yoruba in Cuba, Brazil, etc. But no Benin. Reason is only very few Benin ever fell into slavery. It was forbidden to sell a Benin person, buy or for a Benin person to partake in slave trade. Records of European slave buyers show that.......along the slave trade route to the River Port of Gwatto/Ughoton, displayed slaves and their sellers were NEVER BENIN. In fact the Oba had to reluctantly allow nobles/businessmen in non-Edo provinces of the empire to sell and buy their own people. Just to avoid rebellion from those elite. People from former vassal lands angrily dismiss this. That Benin sold slaves. BUT luckily about two years ago, here on Nairaland, someone posted detailed European records of sold and bought slaves from Africa, origin & slave destination. BENIN WAS CONSPICUOUSLY absent as place bought from. ![]() These measures were to allow population to grow. Edo needed men & women for imperial expansion. If we had written language and schools, the language could have spread easily. |
Super1Star:Nothing twisted. All verifiable stuff from daily activities, ceremonies, etc. From about 1169, sure by Oranmiyan & Eweka. That is settled and common history/knowledge in Benin. Also that the father of Oranmiyan was Benin prince Ekaladerhan that became Imadoduwa/Izoduwa in Ife. That was the only reason Oranmiyan was requested to come to Benin. This has happened more recently too. In 1714, British parliament requested Elector of Hannover, George to become King of England after death of heirless Queen Anne. George was a German relative (and protestant as Catholics were & still forbidden to be King/Queen of England) of English royal family. George spoke only German. Hence he appointed a chief minister (Robert Walpole) to run England while the king mostly stayed in Germany. That chief minister became the British prime minister we all know today. There are many other examples. If you read wide and travel wide, it makes you understand yourself and your history better. Our ancestors were far smarter, political, intriguing & organised than we believe today. |
OBAGADAFFI:Wrong. In fact the Ogiso Igodo, first ogiso of Igodomigodo (as Benin became called alongside the name Idu) was also called Oba-godo. He reigned from about 40BC to 16CE. Roman senate appointed Herod as King of Judaea in 40BC too. There were 31 Ogisos from 40BC to 1100AD. Between 1100-1169 was a time of turmoil as no male heir. Ekaladerhan had been banished in this tumultuous era. A noble man, Evian and later his son, Ogiame ruled. Infact Ogiame prevented Oranmiyan entering the heart of Igodo/palace. In fact, it took Oba Ewedo (1260-1274) to defeat Ogiamien army/supporting chiefs in several battles to enter Benin and built the new palace. About 90 years later. These battles are colourfully re-enacted and Ogiamie symbolically defeated before a new Oba can be allowed to enter Benin/Palace, at coronation. Last one was in 1979. History is alive in Benin, every old street, village, shrine, palace activity and all have a detailed history behind it. |
josite:Wow! Really surprised by the bolded. I wrote almost exactly same here on this thread a few hours ago. Sanusi Lamido really reads wide. |

oloyede252:I guess books written by Yoruba writers. . Well, we leave the artworks to others to judge. Having seen the interest they attract in Berlin, Paris, London's British Museum, Amsterdam and a few other Museums I have personally witnessed, they speak for themselves. Benin just don't want to be drawn into Yoruba affair, be it supremacy war or whatever. Hence they first left the colonial entrapment of Western Region. It is that numerical advantage in politics of Old Western region that left the supremacy hangover of SW that we see now. Well, history major or not, the rote learning and cramming in 9ja schools inspire no confidence in me. ![]() |

sulakishop:Until about about 200 years ago, there was nothing like a united Yorubaland. You were Egba, Ijebu, Oyo, Ife, Awori, etc. Now, you're confusing the matter. Yoruba is NOT one kingdom but kingdoms. Benin never claimed Yoruba originate from Benin. Benin also do not originate from Yoruba. A tribe that split off another tribe or of common ancestry is easy to tell. Their languages will resemble. People study it (philology) and research into if for a whole career. Like Benin, Urhobo, Esan, Ora etc have a common ancestral/proto language. Yoruba, Ilaje, Okun, etc also have a common one. Igbo, Ikwerre etc too. It is about Royal Houses Of Yorubaland & Benin. How they are related. And which came first. In a country of tribalism like Nigeria, only few will be interested in the truth/analysis. Most will be about tribal chest beating/pride. |
chowlade:You obviously have bad manners & poor education. Nigerian education system sucks I know. For the benefit of many who don't read these days and those genuinely willing to learn, I will explain a few things. You're so Igbo-phobic that anyone disagreeing with your view is called derogatory tribalistic names. When was it called Ile-Ibinu (Not Ile bini)? About 1169 AD. By whom? Oranmiyan. Was Oraminyan raised in Benin or Yorubaland? Yorubaland. Could he speak Benin language? No he spoke Yoruba. Why did he declare Igodomigodo (old name of Benin) Ile Ibinu? On witnessing the very vexatious aristocratic intrigues & high politics in Benin. He now truly realised why prince Ekaladerhan/Ododuwa/Izeduwa refused to return to Benin. Upon saying this is a vexatious land, he departed, leaving his Benin-born son who became Oba Eweka I, from whom all Obas since 800 years descend. By about 1440, beginning of Benin Imperial time, Oba Ewuare had changed the name to Edo. People who genuinely read African history will know the reasons. In fact within Benin itself, Ile-Ibinu never really took off. It is coastal people like Itsekheri who kept telling landing Europeans about the powerful King in the hinterland, the King of Benin. Different Europeans wrote it as Beny (portuguese) or Benin (Dutch/French/British). In Ife, Oyo, Owo, Ekiti and other parts, by about 1480, Benin was also referred to as Ado. Oba of Benin as Oba Ado. Now for your information, when Oba of Benin (very fond of my late uncle, The Duke of my town, knowing the family ties) visited my town 30 years ago, I remember my elderly relatives (who partly descend aristocratic/Owo & Benin ruling houses) and proudly kept Owo dialect/culture, in their Owo dialect referring to Oba of Benin as Oba Ado. This is just about 25km from Benin, within Edo State. I was a kid but I remember. And same today. Benin people with historical Yoruba links know it, keep it & will keep it. Very amusing to hear that anyone trying to set the record straight is called Igbo. ![]() I'm not some e-warrior making up things. I'm in a good position to know. |
