Na wa o. What is happening these days? |
drdrei09:Europe sir. Through with courses many years ago. |
It shows we Africans don't know how to run a democracy. It is after all actually alien to us. The oldest man/gerontocratic system in our villages runs far more smoothly that 9ja democracy. |
I get mathschic's drift. If book smart, there are also eyes on you. You keep being compared with confirmed "olodos" later in life. In terms of material success. Visiting 9ja, I hear certain relatives say how their son has built a house, etc. Their kids who struggled academically then. I keep wondering why they tell me. I don't tell them things I have done or not done. ![]() A relative once told me something that shaped my thinking immensely. He said "although you're the smartest kid in the entire extended family, and you will rise to a big position in life, however, those far less intelligent under you will use pen to eat all the money". This statement came when I refused to pay inflated price over the cover price for his favourite newspaper one Saturday morning. So I didn't buy the inflated Guardian from paper vendor by the roadside. In effect, he was saying that despite my excellent academic record, my penchant for honesty and strictness won't get me anywhere materially in 9ja. I was just 12. But from that moment I resolved that I won't live in 9ja. He was a lecturer then. And he doesn't know till today. And a few years later I refused to take up my place in a 9ja university. Instead I travelled abroad to study. We should be careful what we tell kids. Also, we should stop comparing people in terms of material success, each person has his/her own destiny. |
drdrei09:Back in the day, we were told there was negative marking. So only ever shade an answer if you're absolutely sure. I did just that and the outcome wasn't bad at all. Though I never took up my place in a 9ja university.I only later in life had to deal with negative marking at university: Physiology, Immunology & Chemistry. Ol' boy, nor be joke o. Bless God it wasn't in anatomy or pharmacology. ![]() |
Ogbeche77:Same everywhere dude. Showbiz is quick stuff, instant fame and all. Science & tech take time to yield results and require more depth and hard work. It is also not glamorous. The average person out there is not interested in intelligence, innovation, etc. Most want miracle & instant success, money, fame however transient it might be. Jumoke's story fits the story perfectly. Happily enough, she actually deserves her luck. |
RIP |
jide219:Ah, very good observation. But partly wrong conclusion. Benin was an empire and quite progressive & inclusive too. I think best thing is to look at the history of those names. Benin & Oyo empires set their boundary at Otun, in Northern Ekiti. European visitors in the 15th to 18th century wrote that Benin had about 10,000 standing troops and could easily raise 100,000 soldiers if needs be. Now considering the small population of core Benin people, a vast number was drawn from provinces of Non-Edo of Benin empire of which Eastern Yorubaland was at various times a part. Some great Benin warriors were indeed non-Benin people. Benin has been a melting pot for centuries. My family members are intermarried with indigenous Urhobo, Igbo, Ijaw and family is indeed partly Yoruba. Talented (metal, wood, leather works, etc) people from many corners found their way there. It was the Lagos of those days. The 1914 agreement (pre-condition) with the British was to renounce claims to all former imperial provinces in order to restore the monarchy. People bringing tributes to Oba Eweka II at coronation from Ondo in 1914 were refused travel to Benin by British colonial officials. 100 years is a long time. A lot has been lost to history to the point that they would be dismissed as lies today. In that time, the large number of Benin people in Eastern Yorubaland have disappeared into Yoruba. Life in Lagos & urban Yoruba cities may be liberal now, but of old, you had to be Yoruba or remain outsider, though welcome to live there but cannot have privileges of an indigene. Once your name changes from Okunbor to Tokunbor or Ojukwu to Ojikutu, to blend in, your initial identity is gone. Benin was different. Any self-respecting Benin noble man had Yoruba wives, Igbo wives and wives from other tribes. In Edo, your name can be Ojo, Bode, Eze, Ike, Isah, Yusuf and present yourself as an Edo and nobody would raise an eyebrow. |
Good to at least to be seen doing something physical. Fashola has a golden opportunity to leave an indelible mark on Power & infrastructure. A very big challenge too. After this ancient dam electricity, the scorching sun in the North should be harnessed for solar power. That's more important long term. |
Wyttcat:So you think I go checking each post? I have a job dude! @Pained, hahahaha. Somebody I don't know? Take a chill pill. No need for hypertension. The more you infuriate yourself, the more he succeeds in his quest. My question is: how does what a faceless person says affects anyone's status? @impostor, your opinion. Nobody is sharing out millions for those related to Oodua. I know my roots. My relatives (close & distant) sit on over 50 thrones, major and minor, from SW to Edo to Delta to Bayelsa. Thank you. Good luck in your endeavours. |
Na wa o. |
Wyttcat:I did not scold anyone. I'm not a parent to any of you. Your post was the last I saw and just quoted that. I'm a direct descendant of Ododuwa. Easy to trace like Kabiyesi, the current Ooni can trace his. And proudly one. So you believe I will delight in someone calling him a slave?? How does what just another regular provocative NLer says makes him a slave? How many people on NL can one quote or correct? You cannot just pounce on anyone trying to broker peace. |
Wyttcat:You mean this quoted above in response to this bolded below was how your family brought you up to reply: Wyttcat & Princeofpeace, una nor dey tire? Haba! Totally unnecessary. Continue your lies. We reap what we sow. Very simple. |
micronut:This boy had a quarrel with someone here. And I gently asked him & the other person to let peace reign. Just like you have done now. And he turned on me. Check the posts and see genesis of all. Maybe some babalawo just did some juju for him and it's sharking him. He's picking a fight with everyone. But he should pick his fight very very carefully. ![]() |
micronut:Oh, no problem at all. It's ok. He's trying to prove that he's strong. I might just oblige him. ![]() Bragging is not part of my culture. What we cannot do, we also don't say. ![]() |
Wyttcat:How can a cursed person even attempt to curse one already blessed by God? It is return to sender. Sharp sharp. I won't curse you because I was actually warned as a child not to. For good reasons. Problem is every jambite with a few megabytes hurls insults at people they don't know. But I don't hate fellow humans to that extent. He who curses can use his curse to have a bathe. ![]() Those hell-bent on digging their own graves can continue. It's a free world after all. |
WiseBully:I think it is trial by media. Lawyers & courts still have to weigh available evidence. It's fundamental human right to be defended in court. A whole EFFC boss should know that. He can criticise delay tactics but he should gather evidence diligently and make cases watertight using forensics and other available modern techniques. |
Wyttcat:Ur entire generations are raving mad. Mad slave. Thunder fire you and craze in ur body. Omale jati jati. Ewobi. ![]() I have just right medicine for your madness. You will look dazed but hey, better than your current raving lunatic condition. ![]() But you cannot afford to pay for it. So continues your madness. |
Wyttcat:Yaba left escapee. ![]() |
The way the world is going, na wa o. |
I wonder why this did not make it to FP. This could help some diaspora bred people looking for 9ja names for their kids. |
Wyttcat:Oh, take heart. You seem very frustrated & sad. It is well. No need to tear your pants. ![]() I clearly addressed both you & the other troublemaker, or you cannot read? |
You're joking, right? How can any parent be so ungrateful to God after giving him/her a perfectly formed child? Na wa o! |
jide219:I think not really age matter. Benin Obas are not seen too publicly. It has always been so. Oba Erediauwa became Oba at age 55. Not exactly old age for an athletic person. Even then he was seen rarely. Also in Benin, Obas are born as one and invested officially as crown prince/Edaiken on maturity and moves into the crown prince's palace at Uselu. That can last decades depending on longevity of current Oba. Pretty much like the crown prince becomes invested as Prince of Wales and Prince of Asturia on maturity, in England & Spain respectively. As crown prince, the Edaiken often travels everywhere, representing his dad and would have seen everything before even becoming King. When he becomes Oba, he becomes far less visible/available publicly. Whereas, with elected Obas/Emirs, it comes suddenly & slightly overwhelming. He has to start totally afresh, doing all these visits. |
Wyttcat:Wyttcat & Princeofpeace, una nor dey tire? Haba! Totally unnecessary. |
Adaure4ever:I guess he's still doing a "thank you" visit/tour after entering office. The Ooni position is so very massive for Yorubaland that Kabiyesi will know when to reduce presence in too many occasions. |
Adaure4ever:My dear abeg, keep aspiring to be presido. Because we have had many first ladies already, no female presido. You can already begin at grass root. Like councillor, the experience you will get from those little beginnings are invaluable. I will encourage the youth here in the West to join political parties as early as allowed age wise. Very important in a place like UK, France, etc. Nigeria too even, despite the money politics. ![]() |
midehi2:Chai! Since when do white Europeans inhabit Nigeria as indigenes? Na una dey promote bleaching. Perfect black skin, dermatologically great against UV light and skin cancer. ![]() |
mccoy47:You too like better thing. The mature babe set sha. ![]() |
Godsonkemz:Yes they do, but in 9ja? Kikikikikiki. This is where civil organisations should have their own civil courage awards. But most rather suck up to powers-that-be. |
Diademk07:You want to educate me about a place I have some of my roots? ![]() |
