YourHealthlabs: If you don't know that Scientists take calls. Then i'm sorry you are not qualified to be engaged in an arguement.

A typical Scientist workday starts at 8am-4pm, he then stays on during call running the blood bank, Chemistry e.t.c till the next morning then continues work with his colleagues till 4pm. Only the Techicians and Assistants do shifts in lab.

Med lab Science is not inferior to medicine and vice versa.

Good morning.
Not qualified to be engaged in an argument. Dude!!
Coming from you I am disappointed.
I
Back to topic. Maybe where ever u are you take calls I can categorically tell you where I am u run shifts. Shikena!!!
Again about the funds. There is usually a difference from one center to another in terms of final pay but I can aauure you that if that difference occurs in your center it occurs in mine.

I still don't agree on the figures you have quoted cos I have colleagues from all over the country with whom I have compared payslips on occasion. Your figures are wrong or at best falsified to make a point. No one of the ranks you stated earns that amount.

Finally medicine encompasses med lab science. You cannot flip the coin and get any other picture. It is what it is.
Health › Re: Doctors Begin Nationwide Strike Today by armadeo(m): 9:24am On Jul 04, 2014
YourHealthlabs: The Salary payslips are there for all to see. An Intern doc earns more than 200k, Intern Pharmacists earns about 117,000, Intern Scientists earn about 107,000(even though they do calls).
During residency the figure almost doubles in favour of docs.

The payslips are not secret or classified documents.
Not in my center. A registrar doesn't even earn what you claim an intern earns. Secondly a large bulk of the money making the difference is call duty. Third scientist take calls? Are you certain its not rotation shift with off days? Pls clarify. Thanks
Health › Re: Doctors Begin Nationwide Strike Today by armadeo(m): 9:22am On Jul 04, 2014
YourHealthlabs: It will be unfair to use just one state as a prototype as needs and demands differ from state to state. An average national wage will suffice.

The relativity of resident/Pharmacists etc salary does not favour residents nationally in the U.S.

In the few states where it does it is not as high as 300% which is what is obtainable in Nigeria.

In Nigeria residents earn the total cummulative salaries of a pharmacist+Scientist-Nurse. It is not justifiable.
Once again its all about money. I wish you knew eaht the average resident earns or medical officer and you say cumulative salaries. My God.

ujustice: . If you fall sick or need an operation take it to a pharmacist, nurse or lab scientist...you can go further and take it to a hospital cleaner. Be reminded that a pharmacist by training should work in a drug company producing drugs.do you know that engineers are members of johesu? How would you like to go to a hospital headed by an engineer? Or a law court where the judge is a medical doctor from the courts clinic, because he has the longest years of experience working in the premises of the court? No let's make the clerk in the senate the senate president after all he has been there longer than the elected legislators..

I'm sure you haven't heard about them, yet you claim to know all that cocerns Healthcare as a Doctor. Slimchy09: I cant make 'bold' some atrocious comments u made up there so jus figure where my point is headed at in ur line of reasoning.

Why shouldnt they feel important...is it because they didnt spend 6 years + 1 studying medicine. A lot of them have tens of years of experience in their field so y cant they become consultants...because they arent doctors... Ho will that resort to anarchy when everyone has a defined role they play in the hospital.

Your reasoning is stereotypical of the arrogant Nigerian doctors...
everybody is important to somebody.

quote author=drobadebayo]eaglechild: Those clamouring to become consultants should please look at the way residency program is structured.

I hope they realise that they will need to do the following.

Establish colleges for different fields.

Establish faculties for different subspecialties.

Have trained "consultants" in different subspecialties.

Cease to become permanent members of staff of hospitals, and have their appointment terminated at the time of expiration of the program.

Undergo training a minimum of 4 years equivalent to at least a post PhD.(almost impossible given that their first degrees are not at par with MBBS). Involving novel clinical research.

Be ready to have their appointments terminated if they fail to pass college exams.
This is not Wat johesu wants, dey want to become consultants because dey v sat in one place for years.thats not how it's done.
the above comment is why despite 100yrs of being in the same place doesn't entitle you to being a consultant. even now with well defined protocols do johesu members stick to them talk off establishing them as consultants and now defining protocols again. It will result in anarchy and the patient will suffer.

i am also entitled to my opinion which to you is now arrogance

Slimchy09: i used CNO...as a plain example...in reality, what abt radiography and lab units...who heads them?

Secondly...u cannot give a definitive diagnosis without proper medical lab tests...cos ur medical suspicions are simply conjectures and never used as a basis for treatment in a 'proper' setting.

Thirdly...i got my facts straight. I jus didnt feel like typing them all..but since u are challenging my source, let me indulge you.

But firstly...lemme ask u this... The major focus of your strike...Is it honestly patient-focussed or adminstrative control-focussedhuh
1st bolded very wrong example lets overllok that.

2nd bolded. Yes a diagnosis can be made without any investigation ( not in all cases ) then there are the Differentials. investigative results act to complement the initial diagnosis and in most cases treatment has already begun before the results return.

3rd bolded IMHO in a setting where everyone bears the same title CONSULTANT (and knowing Nigerians ) who is finally responsible for the patient. Its a case of too many cooks in one pot. Only anarchy can ensue.
We all know that the johesu consultants will flex thier consultancy muscles trying to prove the dr wrong or show importance or whatever and ultimately the patient will suffer for it. so i say its patient oriented.

For this to work the dr needs administrative control neh.

stine b: I am trying to fanthom if you are a medical officer or House officer maybe even a 2nd MB drop out. For a start,I want to introduce my self as a proud Medical Imaging Specialist A.K.A Radiographer I wish to inform you that as far as my practice of Radiography is concerned,We have trained Radiographers who report Tomograms(CT scan Images, MRI Images, Mamograms and Radiographs(Not picture as you call it). I have worked in Australia,UAE and Grenada before returning home to set up my private diagnostic centre where we run X-ray, Ultrasound,ECGand Laboratory Test. We didn't engage any Doctor in our practice because there are not needed. We have been precise and succesful with our test procedures without any complain from anywhere. It will suffice you to note that I take the X-ray exposure and report the Radiographs afterward with my name and Qualifications written and stamed there in. Same thing goes for general and specialised Ultrasound scan procedures(You can see that I have no need for a RADIOLOGIST,who after graduating from Medical school, decides to come and idle in my field of Radiography because of Lack of Job)
Furthermore, I employed a Medical Laboratory Scientist to oversee our Laboratory and he is very copetent in that line without the involvement of any socalled Pathologist. There is a pharmacy outfit beside us where we Reffer patients to buy their medications if need be, especially in Swab M/C/S etc.The good news is that patients get well after diagnosis and take prescribed medications from the pharmacist. We only refer a case that is worth Refferable to selected Hospitals that understand what Team work or division of labor means so that they can also do the needful. For your information Student Dr. Phantom,Nigerians are getting more exposed to know that you musnt go to the Hospital and see a Doctor to be well. 70% of our patients walk into our diagnostic outfit to give their complains. From our vast clinical knowledge based on experience and reading, we clerk them and carry out investigations where needed and where were see an issue we refer them to pharmacy for drugs or to a Hospital for care.
All the points you have been raising in this thread are only applicable in Government Health Institutions where you have your peers as Directors hence JOHESU petition and outcry to put an end to this anomaly.Government researched and constructively reasoned with JOHESU by accepting to implement our plea and a certain unrecognized Association in Nigeria Trade Unionism called NMA is striking against another mans career progression. All this anomalies in the health sector is what made me to reject an appointment from OAU Teaching Hospital Ife, after my Internship because I didn't want to be restrained from progressing in my career. I never regretted my decision to turn down the offer, because I have made so much money both abroad and in my private practice in Nigeria, A thing that I can only dream of probably after Retiring from the current Healthcare Institutions if I had taken their offer. Infact we need a change in this Rotten sector Instigated by a group of practitioners(NMA) that has little knowledge in Management.
In summary, I heard you said Doctors can do other professional duties. With all sense of seriousness I disagree with you. The day I catch any socalled Doctor Touching an X-ray,CT,Mammo,MRI or even an ultrasound machine, talkless of operating them, I'll so sue them using Decree No. 42 of Federation an act that empowers only Radiographers to run diagosis with those modalities.
Infact Dr. Phantom or whatever you call yourself, I openly challenge you on Clinicals let's see who knows it better.
Go to College of Medical Science University of Calabar and hear how student Radiographers beat Medical students in a quiz organised by the College provost for Anatomy courses (Neuro, Embryology,Gross,Histology etc)

Most of us chosed Radiography as First and 2nd Choice during our Jamb, because we wanted to be Radiographers(Eyes or Oracle of Medicine) Can you beat that? Cheers bro.
mow this is the most annoying post i have read all day, You have traveled up and down where on this good earth have you seen that a radiographer interprets results of anything.

you clerk patients and send them to a pharmacy and you can open your mouth to say you will sue any doctor you see with all those instruments you listed. Jesus is Lord.

you have ridiculed yourself publicly with this entire post.

finally the last paragraph is the biggest lie of the century.

Slimchy09: In my opinion...NMA demands are just truckload of crap. Its nt even patient-focussed...just adminstrative battle between them and JOHESU. its the patient that will suffer in this whole brouhaha...and they are jus too greedy to see that.

For starters...what the heck is a Surgeon General of the Federatn and hw does it better the lives of patients...if nt that its simply a political position and one more bragging claim over other health professionals

Secondly, why are they fighting to head over all the units in the hospital. Imagine a doctor that just graduated and did masters in maybe...say Nursing, would come and be the Chief Nursing Officer in a unit that has matrons with over 25years experience...what a disparity.

I think the major reason why there is so much decay in the health sector is because all the units have always been headed by medical consultants that are ill-trained for the field they are heading. Let the Nurses, lab scientists other health workers man their own unit if they are duly qualified to do so.

NMA cant survive on their own and neither can JOHESU. What is a doctor without a lab test result...NATIVE DOCTOR.

They should stop all this admistrative war and put aside all differences and overbloated ego... to work together for the benefit of the patients...which is their primary purpose of being health workers.
The nerve of some posts sha. there is no need to explain to you.

Or that it is medical doctors that teach doctors in the university? Same lecturers teach all medical students and most of the medical students offer same courses in the university. Nurses and others are also taught by experts in their school. Please stop feeding the public with the erroneous opinion that it is doctors who teach lab technicians, radiologist, nurses, pharmacologists, pharmacists their jobs.
Have you also taken time to review the curriculum of the Pharmacy Schools? All those courses you mentioned they also take, so don't come here and start forming superiority. You prescribe drug because that is your duty as it is the duty of the pharmacist to ensure that what you prescribed is the right drug for the right patient. So why are you guys fighting tooth and nail to prevent him from becoming a specialist in that field? So that you can keep covering your asses when you kill people by prescribing wrong drugs or wasting patient's money?

Consultant is only an English term for a specialist in a field, and we have them in other fields that are not even medically related. I don't know why some educated "illiterates" would think it is only the prerogative of the Medical Doctors. I write with so much passion because some old consultant in a private practice who didn't see the need for a Pharmacist prescribed the wrong drug that eventually led to the demise of my Mum. Until Nigerians begin to sue and demand huge settlements from you guys like they do in Western Countries you'll not take other people serious.
to the best of my knowledge a prescription is given to the patient who then goes to the pharmacy to buy the drug. The dr signs the prescription. the pharmacist however can be uncomfortable with the dosage of the medication not the medication in it self and is duty bound to seek clarification if he feels so. without recourse to insults or know it all from both parties. (dr/pharm)

at bolded why do you want to be called a CONSULTANT for what you already are ( hospital based IMO), what extras are you as a pharmacist planning to do concerning patient care that deserves an upgrade to this title.

ps any links to the post graduate college of pharmacy for my perusal would be appreciated. we learn everyday!
