eduxerxes: we're talking abt the medical field here, and senior Medical officers for that matter. Attendants to the best of my knowledge are junior workers. But if a pharmacist or any other specialist reads up to Phd level and is made a Consultant, I think thats ok. Or are they supposed to be redundant perpetually?
iiiyyyk: My brother, I tire o. No doubt africa is not developing.

How is this fair, that a graduat of optometry eg, will never become a director or a consultant in optometry irrespective of how many years he has been in service or how much he furthers his studies.

There is God o!!
if he reads up to Phd level he becomes a doctor, nobody is arguing that. after all there are professors in all the Fields been touted by johesu. look simply put an issue is the term consultant. The medical doctor who is a consultant is the head of a medical unit in the specialty of his choice, IE he is a specialist. this Johesu members who want to be consultants i have asked before what is it you want to do as consultants that you aren't doing now.
why the need to be called something else.do msc phds and rise to the top of their careers.

an optometrist id given the title Dr of optometry on graduation and they have their roles in the setting. An optometrist can also go ahead to have msc and phd too, in an academic setting rise to become a professor. so what are we saying.

is this all about CMD.

Omonoba1: hahahaha...let me first educate you that i am a medical student in one of Nigeria's best fed universities so you can NEVER intimidate me..learn to address issues as they are and not sentimentally...JOHESU is over-ambitious but the NMA is also greedy..
I don't need to intimidate you, You are already intimidated. that's your problem not mine. medical student. go and read your books.
if we can diffrentiate a consultant pediatrician from a consultant pathologist why won't we be able to do same for a driver and nurse, d job description is clear. Ur arguments are embarrassing, coming from an illogical 'doctor'. Quit feeling threatened and face ur personal development. Stop killing our patients with ur fractional baked knowledge. D real doctors are out there minding there businesses, ur throwing tantrums online. Quite shameful.
Would you say I am a consultant whatever BUT AM NOT A DOCTOR? that in my opinion is the crux of the matter. People in the medical setting can differentiate the general public can not.

If you really care for the patient ie public pick another title not related to post graduate medical training and enjoy.

Omonoba1: seriously, i have been following your post and they all depict arrogancy...from the previous thread till now, you tend to stress the superiority of doctors.. people like you end up spending abnormal years in medical school because you are freaky too proud...if every one should write jamb again for MBBS/BDS, who will you work with?? dont forget that a Doctor simply have little knowledge of everything in the body but does not have full comprehensive knowledge about anything in the body..
If everyone goes back to write jamb most of you Will still end up where u are and reform johesu

YourHealthlabs: A colleague in LUTH told me a story about mbbs fresh graduates clamouring to lecture Science students in idi-araba as Senior lecturers.

Their arguments was that since they are 'doctors' they are equal to PhD lecturers academically and should be appointed Senior lecturers without a single M.Sc.

They prolly thought that 2 Bachlelors' are greater than one M.Sc. I almost fell off my chair 'LOLing'.
Mr I like the logical way you present your arguments though i don't agree with you but this post above is a blatant lie. no fresh graduate of medicine can lecture in any medical school talk-less of being a senior lecturer.

Neelzar: Doctors are very selfish. They do not want other health workers to progress or to arise to a level where they can challenge them. They are only trying to guard their 'turf' forgetting the oath they swore on d day they graduated. They fail to realize that at the end of the day, its d patients that loose. Those of you urging them to continue are doing so because you dont have any family member or friend who requires medical services. These doctors also fail to realize that they are not indispensable, as alternatives exist such as private hospitals. The only problem now is that people will have to spend a lot more.
It is quite unfortunate that our government has failed us but looking at what happened in d case of ASUU and the security issues the government still has to tackle, I can only say to our doctors
...BE READY TO STAY AT HOME FOR AT LEAST FIVE MONTHS MAKING YOUR USELESS DEMANDS BECAUSE THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT IS NOT GOING TO RESPOND TO YOUR 24 STUPID REQUESTS!!! God will fight for his voiceless children who do not have enough money to patronize private hospitals.
i have some questions for you.

1. Why do you feel you have to CHALLENGE the team leader why not discuss options?
2. You realize that this individual took an oath to save lives but you decide to CHALLENGE that decision. ( its their turf)
3. who runs these alternative areas i.e private clinics.

alakid: 4. Doctors have become politicians, doctors don't care about lives etc. That is what our antagonists have been saying, while in truth, what has been happening is we have been so sunk so deep in our books and patient care and woke up to find that we are fast becoming irrelevant and just exploited by others who want to do less and have more.
this my friend is the major issue. Drs are so into books and patient care that most of them dont even know whats going on around them. many were even surprised to find out that this issue has been on for years.

YourHealthlabs: Let me sound a note of warning. If the FG compromises on the agreement it has with JOHESU. How can a non-labour group go on strike just to stop a group of people from reaching the peak of their careers.

JOHESU which comprises of 85% of health professional and workers will also withdraw their services.

Pharmacists through PSN will shut down all hospital pharmacies, they also have the power to declare closures in Idumota.

Nurses won't touch any patient in the hospital ward, patients with burns or catheter will have to make do with the skeletal services that Almighty doctors can offer.

Scientists will shut their blood-banks, people in casualty and emergency wards have died because of this. We once learnt about the CMD of UBTH that tried running lab procedures but ended up spilling the blood samples and killing patients.

Physiotherapists won't offer their services to rheumatic patients in the physical therapy department. They'll have to be in pains till JOHESU resumes.

The effects will be worse than this, but i'll stop here.

Every professional in the health sector is a distinct professional, one group seeking to control the professional growth of other enlightened professionals WON'T WORK.

Please refer to past rare JOHESU strikes and understand the effects.
its still the same thing private facilities offer everything you have threatened to shutdown.

drobadebayo: So who should decide when other members come in.lets use a case of someone that presented to the emergency room with stroke.dat person is admitted by d doc on call, resuscitated.now dt doc decides wen he needs CAT scan(radiology),blood analysis(labs),drugs(pharms),regular turng, odas(nursing) nd den rehabilitation(physio),in some cases psychiatrists.not all patients need all dese people,so it's d doc that dictates wen every oda person comes in.#teamwork led by d doc.Our problem is that we r not working as a team, becos we think someone is superior nd one is inferior.

Cityguy: I don't blame a lot of people for their comments though often times they stem from a number of reasons which might not even be known to them. I guess doctors are not humans. Lawyers, teachers, rail workers, lecturers, oil workers etc can go on strike and of course, no probs cos we 'believe' we are not in 'danger' or that they are not very 'necessary'. Some of us don't even want to know what has generated all these- they just must be 'passionate'. Well, it has finally happened. I think the hospitals are now running without the input of these 'overrated, glorified' and perhaps 'arrogant' doctors. JOHESU, pls take over.

Health › Re: Should A Medical Doctor Be In Charge? by armadeo(m): 12:00am On Jul 02, 2014
VantagePoint: The Nigerian Medical Association and the National Association of Resident Doctors embarked on an indefinite strike today.
Key among the issues leading to the strike is the agitation of other healthcare professionals for equal recognition, amongst other things, with medical doctors. They want to be appointed as CMDs and other administrative positions.
Pharmacists and medical laboratory scientists want to be allowed to attain consultant level, be called doctors, get equal pay, etc.
A lot can be said and argued for both sides, but some pertinent questions remain:
Is any of these going to improve the healthcare situation in the country?
Will these measures curb the perceived arrogance of medical doctors,as most people think is the reason for the agitation?
Will the average Nigerian, you and me, be bothered about who answers to doctor or not, when getting treatment?
Will medical doctors now have to clarify everywhere, that they are MEDICAL doctors, and not doctors of pharmacy, at say, accident scenes?
Will the appointment of a medical laboratory scientist as CMD of a teaching hospital spell doom for the hospital? Is the post not administrative?
Will a doctor of pharmacy identity as a 'doctor' at an emergency scene when someone calls "Is there a doctor in the house"?
Should the arrogant doctors be allowed to go on strike at will?
Can they man hospitals effectively when other healthcare professionals go on strike?
Can other healthcare professionals run hospitals when medical doctors go on strike?
WHO BEARS THE BRUNT OF THE TWO FIGHTING ELEPHANTS?
Obviously the patients

iiiyyyk: If u hold too much u will definitely loose some. Nigeria dr's are selfish, wicked, egocentric and devilish.
Their desire is to make other health professionals appear small and un important. While they arrogate so much importance to themselves.

They dont want others to grow or earn any thing reasonable. Very very unfair.

U spent 6 yrs in school for ur 1st degree others spent 5yrs, is that why your salary shld be 100% bigerhuh
So you agree that your problem is about remuneration. We are getting somewhere now.

This is what u get when empathy free braniacs or mere greedy individuals rush into medical schools solely for money.
I don't know of now but then many medical students had no idea on what the salary structure was concerning them so I can say that nobody goes to medical school because of money.

PS whether we like it or not empathy is part of all medical personnel training be it drs nurses pharmacists etc.

Peaceworld: Again it's quite clear that you're very biased. I will refrain from debating further with you.
No need for any debate. What is it you want to do as consultants that you cannot do now. Its a simple question. If a title alone will improve your output then you haven't been giving your best ever since.

What role do johesu members want to play that only a title will change?

PS nobidy bullies anyone its only the low morales and insecure that feel bullied when asked to carry out their job description.
Health › Re: Doctors Begin Nationwide Strike Today by armadeo(m): 9:45pm On Jul 01, 2014
Peaceworld: She's right, you know. Doctors shouldn't be the only ones planning for the patient. That's why medicine is a team effort. You don't bully your way through as a dictator here. You get ideas from everybody in the team, but when you now think that no other person has an input, who is causing the trouble. Team leaders trying to be team dictators...lol...in my hospital, when was the last time we had a general ward round? Can't even remember! Mtttschhhew...
A team effort I agree and each team must have a leader who is responsible for the final outcome of the team. Am sure you know what happens when to many cooks are making a meal in one pot the pot here being the patient.
This issue isn't about patient benefits or care its about personal greed.

Why do johesu members want to be called consultants and say its for the benefit of the patient, that means their presence since has been a waste of space.

YourHealthlabs: For our 5th centrury docs that hang on the "not-doctor-not-smart" belief. I didn't hear any American Doc telling U.S. Nurses to go write 'JAMB' if they want to become Docs.

I 've also never heard a U.S Physician talk about 'owning' Patients like Nigerian doctors always mouth about, even though U.S was a hotbed of slavery.

"Not true, Dr. Potempa said — the
new degree simply ensures that
nurses stay competent. “It’s not like
a group of us woke up one day to
create a degree as a way to compete
with another profession,” she said.
“Nurses are very proud of the fact
that they’re nurses, and if nurses
had wanted to be doctors, they
would have gone to medical
school.
”

That the difference right there between the first world Physicians and our Pre- paleolithic dokitas. Mentality!
@ bolded, are Nigerian nurses proud to be nurses.

The issue about `owning patients is a misnomer. What it actually means is that the doctor is responsible for the patient. Anything happens that DR is responsible no other person.
