Only someone ignorant of the higher education situation in Nigeria would post something like this.

There are thousands of students who pass their O' levels and UME, but don't get admitted
due to lack of space.

According to the NUC, there is only room for 200,000 university candidates out of the over 1,000,000
that takes the UME exam yearly. That is 20% admission rate !

Without private universities, the admission rate would even be lower.

Excellent, bright students abound in the private universities of Nigeria.

Covenant and Babcock may have weird rules due to their religious affiliations, but they
are good higher institutions.

Some Babcock students have passed their ICAN exams even before graduating.


Madonna University is without a doubt one of the crappiest schools in Nigeria.

Any one who places Covenant and Babcock in "the same basket" as Madonna University doesn't know what
the helll they are talking about.

Madonna is a poor excuse for a university. Half-baked lecturers, no facilities, useless staff etc. Complaints about the school has been going on for ages. The NUC really needs to do something about it because it really is an outrage.

Oil producing states are receiving 13% derivation that is why they receive more funds
from the federation account ( I thought this was common knowledge).

Rivers state has been receiving the bulk of this because they produce the most oil.

The Yorubas (as well as others) need to work on generating revenue independent of

States like what because i know my osun state is rich in everything. shoot!!

All the states in the South East and South West zones are the ones I am referring to.

If these states do not receive money from the center (fed govt) as it is today:-

1. They would not have enough money to run schools (primary, sec, college of ed, poly, universities)

2. They would not have enough to pay for all their civil servants

3. They would not have enough to run hospitals

4. They would not have enough to build roads

The list goes on !!!!

It is true that we are richer than the north (the south east and south west), but we do not pay enough taxes (especially individually)
to sustain the state governments.

It takes about N350 - N500 miilion naira to run the first generation universities (UI, Nsukka) per month. Can your
governors pay for this right now without money from the center ?

You tend to forget that the North feeds the nation. So, you are also dependent on them for food. And they are not a bunch of illiterates abeg.

The central part of the country to an extent "feeds the nation". States like Benue, Kogi etc.

I really don't consider them the North.

Yes, Obudu has an airstrip, but you can get there through calabar.

Virgin Nigeria, Aero airline and Arik air all have flights into calabar. You can then hop

But you must bear in mind that back then, we did not have the 10-15 million people living in lagos as we do today. Those
governors were able to perform that well because

1. they did not steal like you have rightly pointed out

2. there were less people to cater for back then.

Let me use this analogy to bring home my point.


Let's say you have a husband and wife that bring home a combined income of say $50,000. This couple has 2 kids.

Now, due to lack of ambition & hard work, this couple now makes $30,000 a year, but now has
11 children to take care of.

You can see that, the standard of living of the family is going to go down tremendously.


This is the case in Lagos ! Less income coming in, but more people to cater for !!!



So, while your plan is laudable, the problem with lagos is that, the population continues to increase,
but income accruing to the government has not been able to increase proportionally, thus, a
reduction in the standard of living of the lagosians.

The federal govt that should be helping out does nothing !! Go and look at the state of the federal roads in Lagos. Infact, it is
the state that is bearing some of the federal govt's responsibilities like maintaining its
roads, equipping the police etc.

Even if as governor, you don't steal one kobo, there is just not enough funds to carry out the
projects you have laid out within 1 year in office. There has been too much rot and stealing
done prior to 1999 for you to accomplish what you have written (though it is laudable).

This is why Tinubu embarked on a massive Internally Generated Revenue drive while he was in office.

In 1999, less than 3 billion naira (per month) was generated by the lagos state government. Today, the state
is generating an average of 11 billion naira per month. It is this money, coupled with the 3-4 billion
that lagos receives from the federal govt, that the state is using to implement its numerous
programs, which many are praising Fashola for today.

Nigeria has a population of 140 million and a GDP of 191.4 billion dollars !

To increase the standard of living of your people, you have to increase their GDP.


So, how would you go about increasing the GDP of Lagos as Governor ? This really
is your challenge. It is with this, that you'll be able to provide the numerous services
and infrastructure you have outlined.

Increase in GDP in Lagos state = increase in taxes to the govt = increase in govt's ability to provide services
for its citizenry.

I think what matters are the projects the funds are going to be applied to.

Is Yar'Adua committed to completing the NIPP projects initiated by his predecessor ? - This
