Onitsha traders now suffer because of Boko Haram as their supply chains to and from many parts of the North are grossly diminished.

As Motor Cycle Dealers Loose Patronage From The North.

Odinaka ANUDU

The activities of the dreaded Islamic sect Boko Haram in Northern Nigeria have continued to impact negatively on business activities even beyond Northern Nigeria. Currently, Nnewi a large industrial city in the south eastern part of Nigeria which has remained the major market for automobile, spare parts and other high tech materials in the West African sub-region and beyond has been affected adversely as a result of lack of patronage from dealers from the North of Nigeria.

Nnewi ,the second largest city in Anambra State often referred to as Japan of Africa due to what may be called an Industrial Revolution that has been witnessed in the city from mid 1990s hosts banks, industries, manufacturing companies and major business outfits such as Cutix Cables Plc, Ibeto Group, Innoson Group ;the only indigenous outfit that manufactures cars, buses and other vehicles among others.

It is also home to many great sons of Igbo land and Nigeria such as Dr A.A Nwafor Orizu, first senate president in Nigeria; Sir Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu, first Nigerian millionaire; Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Biafran warlord; MCK Ajuluchukwu, nationalist and anti-colonial fighter; Mr F.C Nwokedi, first Nigerian permanent secretary; Dr Dozie Ikedife, former president-general of Ohaneze Ndigbo; Chief Cletus Ibeto, industrialist and philanthropist; Engr Ajulu Uzodike, industrialist, philanthropist and former governorship aspirant; Chief Augustine Ejikeme Ilodibe, owner of Ekene DiIichukwu Motors; Mr Innocent Chukwuma, industrialist and philanthropist, and others too numerous to mention.

But in spite of this rich history, Nnewi is today at the mercy of these merchants of death who have continued to destabilize the economy of the whole Northern Nigeria and even beyond. Nigerian Orient News gathered that in the not-too-distant past, traders and business men came from all parts of Nigeria particularly, the North to patronize automobile, spare parts and other manufacturers.

However, the situation has suddenly changed. Nigerian Orient News gathered that one of the reasons why there is poor patronage in this sector is the influence of Boko Haram carnage in the northern part of the country. One of the traders, Obinna Ughammadu, who spoke to our correspondent said that traders from the north are the first-rate customers of the auto industry but that since the carnage started, many northern patrons have abandoned their homes and businesses and ran to other parts of the country.

According to Barr. Mrs Ebere Igwilo, whose family also deals in motorcycle spare parts, ‘’most sales used to come from the north because it is a major means of transportation within the north, but since Boko Haram struck, customers from the region no longer come to the eastern part of Nigeria’’. In the face of continued insecurity,’’ most of the traders who incidentally are of Eastern origin have had to close shops and are at the moment looking for shops in the south or not doing any business at all’’ she said.

Some of the traders who have dared to stay back in the troubled areas have sometimes paid dearly with their lives and in some cases lost properties worth millions of naira.

However this ugly trend according to Mrs Ebere Igwilo has turned some dubious customers into millionaires as they have capitalized on the opportunity provided by the insecurity to default on their credit.

This has affected some of the dealers and manufacturers who used to grant credit facilities to their long standing customers. Some trustworthy customers have not paid because they have not sold while the dubious ones have used the opportunity to abscond with their creditors’ money

PROUD-IGBO:
Yeah Mekus, i watched an interview he gave a few months ago (i think it was the Bisi Olatilo show) and was surprised to learn his wife is Yoruba. He said his people and her people were against the marriage at first; saying in jest how her people weren't happy she was marrying a kobo-kobo (first time i ever heard that one wink), while his people on the other hand were not happy he was marrying a Yoruba-Yoruba grin grin; but the marriage has gone from strength to strength, even to the extent that he was his Mother-in-laws favourite b/4 she passed on.

Business advice: if anyone has idle money laying around, and is looking for a secure investment, you couldn't do better than Orient petroleum at the moment, trust me.....all indications point to this company being a multi billion dollar venture in the next 5 to 10 years; so anytime there's a public offering, my candid advice would be to buy a stake in the company.

This is a company that is about to own a refinery, and bound to expand as the business grows; has a license to exploit/export crude; will soon delve into the 'gas' part of the business as well; could also go into processing other by products too numerous to mention; and it's not encumbered by the 'Nigerian factor' so the business can be run profitably.......the Rivers state gov't knew what it was doing when it bought a stake in the business. So all should watch this space for the next Nigerian success story. wink.
are you sure about that?

mekuslogan: Lagos' problem is intractable. It is in the interest of Yorubas to support a program of even development of the country so that the number of those moving to Lagos (Nigeria's former capital developed with our collective wealth) from all parts of Nigeria will reduce. The more they keep playing tribalism with the developement of other places, the more Lagos is swamped, to the disadvantage of the Yorubas. Now Igbos even rent houses to Yorubas in some parts of Lagos (Festac, Satellite town, etc)

Katsumoto: Lets say there are 100 passengers flying from Enugu to Dubai.

20 passengers are from Enugu/Onitsha, while the rest of the passengers are from Abuja and other Northern states.

I am assuming that Western passengers will use Lagos airport to travel to the same destination.

In this case, 80 passengers (a majority) will have to take additional flights to get to Abuja and other Northern states.

Ignoring the economic effects/benefits of the internal flights, 80 people will have to take the added risk of flying internal when everyone knows the dangerous state of Nigeria's airline industry. That is what I meant by safety.

Obviously, this wouldn't be the case if the majority of passengers were from the East. But since we don't know for sure, we are guessing and thats why I used conditional statements and not definitive ones.
thankgod you are only guessing.
TravelRe: Denial Of Licence To Airlines: Oduah Has Sectional Agenda - Rep by asha80(m): 6:57pm On Aug 29, 2012
Katsumoto: In my initial post, I at least considered other factors other than money.

I considered the safety of passengers who have to journey from Enugu to Abuja
. I also considered the economics of such a maove and that's why I started with if it is not economically viable for the airlines to fly to enugu, then the consumer suffers. Mr economics, do you understand why I made that statement? If the minister insists that the airlines use Enugu as a base and then refuse, the consumer suffers because competition is refused on the routes those airlines want to fly and as such, price doesn't go down as it should do.

With regards to your second comments, unless you can prove that a great percentage of those flying through Abuja and Lagos are from the East, then you have no leg to stand on. There is an international airport at PH (which is in the East) and more flights would operate from there if the demand was there.

However, if your point was that absolutely no one should travel more than an inch to fly international, then I suggest you contact the minister and advise her to situate an airport in every local government, starting with yours.

You must be a child if you think that opening an airport in a city is what opens it up to international business.

I don't engage animals in debate and I will simply ignore you if you respond with another post filled with idiocy, brigandry, and insults. I have never debated with you before and I don't understand why you started your post in such a manner unless you are one of those with multiple IDs.
what do you mean by safety?

The other day in kwara, some agberos went ahead and sabotaged rail tracks on the ilorin to offa axis because the people were deserting the motor parks & opting for train services which are cheaper & safer. The garage touts had to go and destroy the rail tracks to ensure continous business flow (smh). Nigeria is a mess.

leyom234: Majority of Nigerians know virtually nothing about PHCN. You just want light abi? Just yesterday, MR Vice President blasted the man because it was discovered that he actually had personal interest in PHCN companies. Barth is into business of power generation. He expressed personal interest and the vice president was furious at him. He resigned out of shame. He owns a company called Geometricpower which claimed to be generating power to the national grid but in actual sense, it generates nothing. His plan to own parts of PHCN was exposed and he resigned in shame. I know Nigerians will not want to believe this because they feel its PHCN staff that cause power outage and interruption.
i agree he probably has interests in a company that wants to invest but who do you think is responsible for power outage and interruption?

Okija_juju: Nigerians should cool down jor... That's how we all screamed and shouted Farouk Lawan for president after he published his famous subsiby probe report until Otedola pulled his skirt down in public and revealed his dirty pubic hair..

Barth Nnaji indeed made a difference in the Power Sector as Minister, however, his resignation is connected to him being implicated in the ongoing unbundling and privatisation exercise in the Power indutry which he is minister..
Privatisation is a dicey thing especially in a country like Nigeria where every politician and lobbyist wants a piece of the action. Electricity is gonna become the next big thing in Nigeria and I think he got caught in the mix. The president advised him to resign and save face rather than be dragged through the media, EFCC and the courts.. He chose to resign which I think was a good decision..

I hope the President Jonathan finds a replacement with the same zeal and work rate like Nnaji..
