The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) are working towards the reduction of the current vehicle import duty from 70% to 45%. The Comptroller-General of Customs, Col Hameed Ali (retd.) has urged the federal government to reduce the 35% levy on imported vehicles , saying the move is necessary to check the rising cases of smuggled vehicles into the country.

The Punch reports that Ali said this on Wednesday, January 23, in Abuja at the unveiling of a Strategic Revenue Growth Initiative which was held at the Ministry of Finance. The Customs boss said the Nigeria Customs Service had made a proposal to the Ministry of Finance on the need for a reduction in the 35% levy on imported vehicles.

He said currently, any new vehicle imported into the country attracted an import duty of 35% and an additional levy of 35%, bringing out the total duty payable on such a vehicle to about 70%. Ali said the 70% being charged by the government is high and stressed the need to reduce it. He explained that the government could still retain the 35% import duty while the additional 35% levy could be reduced.

“First, we must understand the fact that smuggling in most cases did not really occur because of the tariff that is placed on goods in Nigeria.

“When we talk about vehicles, yes, new vehicles attract 70% duty; that is 35% duty and 35% levy but most of the vehicles that are being smuggled through our borders are not new vehicles, they are used vehicles.

“And the value is calculated based on the year of make and other attributes. So, the motivating factor that gets people to move these goods to our neighbouring countries is with the sole aim of smuggling them into Nigeria.

“The 35% is a baseline which is the duty, but the 35% levy is what we think should be tinkered with. “We should be able to reduce that to a level that it would be affordable. 70% is on the high side, there is no doubt about that for new vehicles but we cannot touch the baseline of the tax regime.”

On Monday mornings in Lagos, commuters – smarting from the rest opportunity offered by the weekends – are often upbeat and more aggressive in their commute.

We are in a country where majority of the entire population travel by road. Let’s not talk about sea travel or traveling by train; those two on a scale of ten is tending towards zero. Air travel is next to road but most people will always opt for road trips for one or two reasons.

Some say they prefer to die on road where they can at least get some help before dying than dying on air where their body might not be seen again.

Whichever way it is; we all have our choices to make.

For those that always travel by road, I believe there are some things you must have experienced while traveling that have left an indelible mark in your memory. It might not have happened to you directly, but someone close to you or even someone around you.

You’ll find out after reading through this post if these are the worst things you’ve experienced while taking a road trip.

Without veering off what brought us here, let’s look at the worst things you may experience taking a road trip

1. Car with leaky exhaust:

If you have not experienced this firsthand, you might not understand how frustrating it can be. This occurs when smoke which is made up of carbon monoxide and other gases leak from the exhaust system into the cabin of your car.

The experience is very irritating and it will definitely keep you uncomfortable throughout the journey. Your eyes will be teary and sore. Your eyes will actually look like someone who comfortable smoked some cheap weed. Added to this, you can’t breathe well.



2. Getting misdirected:

I keep wondering what is so hard in telling someone that seeks direction from you that you don’t really know. Instead of stating they don’t know, they will go ahead in giving you their ‘trial and error’ direction.
Imagine driving for almost 20 minutes and upon arrival, you realize you got to the wrong place. It is not a good thing to experience.


3. Running stomach:

A running stomach can make you sweat profusely even when you’re inside a car fitted with a mortuary-standard chilly factory fitted air conditioner.

This could be considered to be the worst if you’re using a commercial vehicle. Other passengers will run out of patience and are not ready to wait for you at every possible stop so you can go ease yourself. It can even be embarrassing for some folks to beg.

It is a little bit bearable if you’re in your own car because you’ll definitely know how to manage yourself.

Be mindful of what you eat before you embark on road trips. This can be worse if it’s night journey.


4. Motion sickness:

This is something that is experienced by some people while traveling by road even by sea. This happens as a result of conflicting messages sent by your body system to your brain. This can result in maximum discomfort as you travel.

It can cause dizziness and might lead some to start vomiting. Traveling can be a nightmare to those who suffer motion sickness.


5. Sitting beside someone with body odour:

One thing about being a victim of this is that you can’t easily switch your focus; you’ll always perceive the foul odour. Some victims of this great discomfort can go to the extent of getting off the vehicle in a bid to avoid the sentencing to so much discomfort.


6. Robbery:

Robbery is a terrible thing to experience while taking a road trip. It goes to the extent of some people losing their lives. Those highway robbers can milk you dry of all your valuables and women are prone to being raped.


7. Sitting near a talkative:

The people that will so much relate to this are the ladies. Sitting near a talkative whom you have no interest in what they are saying can be irritating , most especially if you’re their point of interest. It will be bloody if the talkative is endowed with what we have in number 5 of this write-up.


8. Car damage/fault:

Tesla Model 3 surpasses SUVs to become America’s Best-Selling Premium Car In 2018.

This is quite an impressive achievement by an auto-company that commenced operations about 10 years ago.

Today, Tesla is selling much higher numbers than models from more established luxury car makers. Even more impressive is that the Model 3 launched at a much higher price than initially advertised, still it is outselling more established luxury brands.

And things are expected to get much better in 2019 with the Model 3, with its introduction to China and Europe in February 2019, sales of the Tesla brand are expected to skyrocket.

Earlier this year, Tesla announced it sold almost as many vehicles globally in 2018 (245,240) as it did in every previous year combined — going back to the company’s founding in 2003.

A big contribution to that fantastic growth was the fact that the Model 3 became the best-selling premium vehicle in the United States.

Tesla didn’t release U.S. sales figures for the Model 3, but it is known that the bulk of deliveries stayed in the United States. According to research by InsideEVs, Tesla sold about 139,782 Model 3s to American customers.

The next best-selling luxury car, the Lexus RX, was left far behind, with 111,641 units sold. The list also includes premium SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLC (62,435 units) and Audi Q5 (61,835 units).

So not only did the Model 3 sell better than vehicles from established luxury automakers, but it also beat SUVs, the hottest market segment right now.

During a South African Airways (SAA) flight, two passengers were reportedly robbed while they slept.

The flight which originated from Johannesburg, South Africa on Monday, was bound for Hong Kong,

According to report monitored on TimesLive, passengers were robbed of cash and jewelry mid-air.

The newspaper said the items – stowed in the overhead compartments – appeared on some seats in the cabin after the police boarded the aircraft to search it following complaints.

Tlali Tlali, spokesman of SAA, said the two passengers complained to the cabin crew when they found out their items were missing.

The spokesman said nothing was found on the suspects the passengers thought stole their things.

“Two passengers approached our crew complaining that they had lost their valuables,” said Tlali.

“One of the complainants was able to point out a few passengers who had behaved in a suspicious manner in the cabin and who were seen opening some overhead compartments while other passengers were sleeping.

“The rest of the passengers disembarked and suspects identified were ordered to remain in the aircraft and were searched by the police in Hong Kong.

“Nothing was found [on] them during the search.”

Tlali added that the SAA would not hesitate to impose a ban on any passengers who were reported to have breached its conditions of carriage.

Earlier today, a lone accident occurred at the Y junction inward Ogudu area of Lagos state.

The accident occurred when an articulated vehicle skidded off the road, leaving the attached rear hanging from a oblique side of the road.

The accident occurred as a result of brake failure.

The accident caused a slight obstruction, which created a backlog of vehicle at the Olojojo axis of the road.

Official of the LASEMA visited the location to carry out a recovery.

The last time Pan Nigeria produced its last edition of a Peugeot pickup vehicle was 14 years ago.

However, the Nigeria-affiliate of the French auto brand just launched a pickup model into its Nigerian market.

The vehicle is produced in the auto firm’s assembly plant in Nigeria.

The company production of pickup dates as far back in 1956 – when it began with the Peugeot 403 Camionnette-Bâchée, ; the Peugeot 404 Camionnette-Bâchée of 1967, and then the Peugeot 504 pickup, which succeeded it until 2005, the last year of production at Pan Nigeria Limited, assemblers of the Peugeot brand of vehicles.

The new pickup model features a good measure of roominess and equipment, thus fulfilling the fundamental needs for robustness, endurance and the 4×4 drivetrain.

The vehicles also features a high body belt line, a vertical front, a horizontal bonnet and a large ground clearance (210mm to 215 mm).

The load zone has a bed that is 1.40m long and 1.39m wide, equipped with anchoring hooks on the outside. The side walls and the real panel are completely covered with a protective resin which adds to the rigidity and robustness of the whole vehicle. The maximum payload of the vehicle is 815kg.

The new pickup is said to have a performance drivetrain adapted to the needs of the core market, adding that its longitudinal 2.5 litre common rail turbo diesel engine develops 115bhp and 280Nm, combined with a manual five-speed gearbox. It is available in 4×4 and 4×2 versions. According to the firm, the 4×4 version is engaged using a special lever to transmit some of the power to the front drivetrain.



The 4×4 version is reported to give the new vehicle versatility, easy use in every weather condition and all terrains.

“This allows the driver to make a selection where needed, whether in normal 4×4 4H (4 High) mode or in the 4L (4 Low) mode at short speeds. Thanks to a reducer, extra torque can be applied at very slow speeds to manoeuvre out of the most extreme driving situations,” it states.

Other features of the vehicle are manual air-conditioning, electric windows, radio with CD player and USB port.

“For safety and ease of driving, the new Peugeot pickup is equipped as standard with an ABS braking system with brakeforce distribution, rear parking aids, passenger and driver air bags, plus electrically adjustable exterior mirrors”, Pan says.

President Muhammadu Buhari and the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday received the new 10-year Diplomatic Passport by the Nigeria Immigration service at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the officials of NIS had earlier captured the biometrics of the President and his vice, shortly before the commencement of an extraordinary meeting’ of the Federal Executive Council.

The Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, assisted by the Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service, Mohammed Babandede, later presented the new passports to the president and his vice after the Council meeting.

Speaking to State House correspondents, Dambazau, who narrated the origin and history of passport in Nigeria, stated that apart from the 10-year validity, the new passport had an enhanced and self-tracking application.

According to the minister, the new passport meets the specifications of the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

“Now, things are dynamic and International Civil Aviation Organisation also brought up additional security features, which we have to comply with as early as possible for various reasons.

“We have series of cross border issues to deal with and series of challenges in terms of border security and management and one of the best ways to do that in addition to biometrics, is to ensure that our passport contains all these security features,’’ he added.

According to him, the passport is weather friendly and has polycarbonate technology, which eliminates damage, it also saves Nigerians in the diaspora the time needed to frequently visit Nigerian embassies in search of new passports.

In his contribution, Babandede said the Immigration service had in October 2018 announced that Nigeria would begin using the new passport by December 2018.

He expressed optimism that the security features in the new passport would raise the standard of the document, adding that President Buhari would soon launch the passport.

According to Babandede, the new 32-booklet standard passport will cost N25, 000 and 130 dollars abroad, while 64-booklet passport with five years validity will cost N35, 000 and 150 dollars abroad.

He explained that the 64-booklet passport with 10-year validity will cost N70, 000 in Nigeria and 230 dollars abroad.

He said the diplomatic passport, which is free of charge, is meant for members of the diplomatic corps and is owned for life by serving or former presidents of the country.

The NIS boss also said that the old passport remained valid.

Leaks can be difficult to identify,but there are clues that can help you determine just what is slowly dripping from under your car.

There are three things to look for when trying to determine where the leak may be coming from:LOCATION,COLOR and CONSISTENCY.



Engine Oil

Engine oil leaks are the most common type of leak, and are found under the front half of the car, usually directly under the engine.Engine oil is black or very dark brown and will be very slick to the touch.

Used engine oil may have a slightly burnt odor. Engine oil leaks typically come from the oil pan, valve covers, oil filter, real seal, or the oil pan plug.


Coolant

Coolant is red or green,and has a slightly thicker consistency than water.The fluid is slippery to the touch and the most distinctive aspect of coolant is its sweet smell.

Coolant leaks typically come from the front-most part of the vehicle,near the radiator or under the engine.
Coolant leaks typically originate from the radiator,radiator hoses,water pump,or the radiator overflow container.



Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid will be found under the car,in the middle and towards the front. Transmission fluid is typically red and very slick to the touch.

The consistency is similar to that of light engine oil.Transmission fluid also has a distinctive petroleum smell.Transmission fluid that is long overdue for a change may be more brownish in color and smell burnt.

Leaks from the front of the car:


Power Steering Fluid or Brake Fluid

Power steering and brake fluid look and feel very similar.Power steering fluid tends to be a shade darker than brake fluid.

Both will be slick to the touch and have the consistency of thin oil.Power steering fluid leaks typically originate with the power steering pump or hoses.Brake fluid leaks can appear anywhere along the brake lines that run the length of the vehicle.When discovered, these leaks should be fixed immediately,as they pose a safety hazard if not corrected.


Windshield Washer Fluid

Windshield washer fluid comes in a variety of colors, including pink,blue,orange,purple,and red.This fluid is the consistency of water.

It has very little smell,and leaks will typically come from the windshield washer reservoir or the hoses that lead to the jets that spray the fluid on the windshield.Excessive use of the windshield wiper fluid when the vehicle is not in motion will cause puddles of fluid to develop under the car where the fluid runs down the cowl.


Fuel

The easiest way to identify a fuel leak is by smelling the fluid. You can easily tell if the leaking fluid is fuel by the scent.

Fuel leaks are a significant safety hazard and with each drop that hits the ground you are losing money, so they should be fixed immediately. Fuel can also leak from the front of the vehicle if the fuel delivery system, such as the fuel lines or the fuel injectors,have failed or are failing.


Rear Differential Oil


On rear-wheel-drive vehicles,the rear differential is located between the two rear tires, and is a large round casing about the size of a soccer ball.If you find thick,black,oil on the pavement under the differential,it may be leaking.This oil tends to have a higher viscosity than engine oil.

Leaks from other areas of the car:


Coolant (exhaust)

If you routinely fill the radiator or radiator overflow container,but cannot find an obvious leak near the front of the car, check your tail pipe.If you smell a sweet odor emanating from the tailpipe you could have an internal coolant leak which is allowing coolant into the cylinder and out the tailpipe.

This type of leak should be fixed as soon as possible,as it can cause major damage to the internal moving parts of the engine if allowed to worsen.

There are worries that Brexit issues could severely affect the production of Rolls-Royce,

The concern was further heightened yesterday after Theresa May – the UK Prime Minister – suffered a devasting setback when the Parliament rejected the deal with the European Union on the terms of Brexit by 432 to 202.

Rolls Royce, the British luxury automaker has a system of production, which is just in time production.

This system means that it doesn’t typically store auto-parts for more than 24 hours and this method of production could be harmed by Brexit, whether or not the UK reaches a deal with the European Union.

Only 8 per cent of Rolls-Royce parts are produced in the UK. As such, the company imports roughly 32,000 parts from more than 600 global suppliers to build its vehicles. The company undertakes 35 truck journeys across the English Channel per day to ensure production runs smoothly.

In the event of a no-deal Brexit on March 29, Rolls-Royce is already preparing for the worst case scenario. The preparation involves training suppliers in new import procedures, investing in new IT systems, and preparing to have certain parts flown in from overseas if port deliveries are delayed due to customs issues, etc.

In the event that the UK exits the Europe Union, production of the Rolls-Royce could be adversely affected. However, there’s no chance the car manufacturer will shift production outside of Britain. This is according to Rolls-Royce chief executive Torsten Müller-Ötvös.

Rolls Royce is not just into cars; they are into the design and production of engines used by planes.

Rolls Royce has announced their world record plan to build the fastest all-electric plane; it will be the first of its kind.

This zero-emissions plane is expected to make a run for the record books with a target speed of 300+ MPH (480+ KMH)

Inside a bustling hangar bay at the far end of Gloucestershire airport in South West England, a team of British engineers, designers, and data specialists recruited from across Rolls-Royce and beyond have set out to make history.

The high-performance electric plane is scheduled to take to the skies over Great Britain in 2020.

Rolls Royce guys went further to clear the air that this is not any form of publicity stunt. It’s part of a Rolls-Royce initiative called ACCEL – short for “Accelerating the Electrification of Flight” – that’s intended to pioneer a third wave of aviation in support of Rolls-Royce’s strategy to champion electrification.

– “This plane will be powered by a state-of-the-art electrical system and the most powerful battery ever built for flight. In the year ahead, we’re going to demonstrate its abilities in demanding test environments before going for gold in 2020 from a landing strip on the Welsh coastline.”

To actualize this project is no child’s play. They have myraids of challenges to overcome for the project to be feasible.

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje, has vowed to remove the Lekki Toll Gate, if voted into power in 2019.

Agbaje described the fee being collected at the toll gate as illegal.

The PDP guber candidate noted that though the toll gate was built by a concessionaire, it had since been bought over by the Lagos State Government.

The new and only Pedestrian Bridge in Benin-city, the Edo state capital, is now open for public use.

The Pedestrian Bridge is situated across a federal highway – the Benin-Lagos expressway – in front of the main gate of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

The Pedestrian Bridge was constructed by the Godwin Obaseki-led Edo state government.

Before now, no pedestrian bridge existed in the Benin-city. Though, this new pedestrian bridge is not the first to be constructed in the state capital.

The first Pedestrian Bridge was constructed in the early ‘90s. It was constructed about 500 meters away from where this new one is located. It was built in front of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

The UBTH Pedestrian bridge – the first to be built in Edo state – suffered severe lack of usage. Ostensibly, this led to its eventual dismantling and disappearance from that location. That Pedestrian Bridge was constructed by Lucky Igbinedion, during his stint as the Chairman of Oredo Local Government council.

It could be recalled that several students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) have lost their lives while attempting to cross the ever-busy Benin-Lagos expressway to the institution’s campus. The most recent being the one involving a certain Late Rita Awele.

All these informed the decision by the Edo state government to construct a pedestrian bridge in front of the UNIBEN main gate.

The new Pedestrian Bridge was constructed by Hartland Construction.

Driving at night could be very dangerous especially in our country Nigeria where a lot of things are upside down.

Why do I think traveling at night is dangerous? Relax; I have a twenty feet container loaded with reasons why you should avoid such night travel this yuletide.


1. Bad Roads:

Most of the major roads in the country are not in good shape. With Nigeria being the giant of Africa, we have passed the level of having dilapidated major roads. Most of the major roads linking major states have death traps at every point on the road. This includes water-well sized potholes, untarred roads and lots more. We unintentionally run into these potholes during the day time let alone at night.


2. Security reasons:

Night driving in Nigeria should give you concern when it comes to security in the country. Most of these major roads are evaded by highway robbers especially at night when the security agencies meant to be on patrol are in their hibernation mode. You can even fall victim of being flagged down by robbers in disguise. They do it so well that you think they are security agents mounted in a checkpoint.


3. Little or no help if an accident should occur:

No one prays for an accident to occur when traveling, but what will be your fate when the unexpected occurs. There are no much functional emergency rescue squads around the country that can be of help at such time of the night. A lot of people driving by at such time will even be afraid to help out because of their safety.


4. You might get frustrated if your car spoils:

How would you manage the situation if your car eventually gets spoilt on transit? How prepared are you to go about it?

It can be very frustrating to have your car spoil at the middle of nowhere most especially at night. You’re even prone to being attacked by robbers and hardly will you get a helper; everybody is afraid in the country.

1. The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway is a 127.6-kilometre-long (79.3 miles) expressway.


2. The Expressway connects Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State and Lagos.


3. It is also the major route to the northern, southern and eastern parts of Nigeria.


4. The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway is the oldest in Nigeria. It was commissioned in August 1978 during the military administration of Major-General Olusegun Obasanjo.


5. This expressway is the busiest inter-state route in Nigeria and handles more than 250,000 Passenger Car Unit (PCU) daily and constitutes one of the largest road networks in Africa.


6. It is part of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency(FERMA) projects, concerned with road improvement and connectivity between the States of Nigeria.


7. The reconstruction of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway was flagged off on July 2013 by Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.


8. The contract was awarded to Julius Berger Nigeriaand Reynolds Construction Company Limited at a sum of 167 billion Naira, equivalent to $838,986,290.


9. Two sections of the expressway will be reconstructed and this includes Section I (Lagos to Sagamu Interchange) and section II (Sagamu Interchange to Ibadan).


10. The reconstruction of the road had 2017 as the initial completion date but it was later moved to end of 2018/early 2019 by the Mohammadu Buhari-led government as a result of the increase in scope of work.

At any of the domestic airports in Nigeria, you may not be able to board a commercial airline, for a domestic flight, if any of the under-listed items are found in your luggage or in your possession.

These prohibited items, if found on you, could cause you delay in boarding a flight or even deny you the flight. In some cases, it might even cause you to be arrested, while some of the items can be confiscated and with no other consequence.

See below the list of prohibited items at the SRA or ESRA of any domestic airport in Nigeria as highlighted by the Federal Airport Authority Of Nigeria (FAAN).

SHARP OBJECTS

Box cutters, Ice Picks/Axes, Knives with Blades of any length, Paper or Plastic Knives, Razor-type Blades, Sabers, Scissors (Metal or Plastic) with Blades of any Length; Swords, Knitting and Crochet Needle, Screwdrivers, Hypodermic  Syringes ) except on production of doctors certificate stating medical necessity).

SPORTING OBJECTS

Baseball Bats, Bows and Arrows, Cricket Bats, Golf Clubs, Darts, Hockey Sticks, Lacrosse Sticks, Billiard, Snooker or Pool Cues, Ski Poles, Spear Guns, Any other items that, with reasonable consideration, may be used as a potential weapon.

GUNS AND FIREARMS

BB Guns, Compressed Air Guns, Realistic Replica Guns (Plastic or Metal); Flare guns, Flares, Gun Lighters, Gun Powder, Parts of Guns or Firearms,  Pallet Guns, Starter Pistol, Catapult.

FLAMMABLE ITEMS

Fuels – (including cooking fuels and any flammable liquid fuel),

Gases  -  (Isobutylene, liquefied gas, usually in lighters Butane Hair Curling Appliances),

DISABLING CHEMICALS AND OTHER DANGEROUS ITEMS

Chlorine for Pools and Spas, Compressed Gas Cylinders – including Fire extinguishers liquid bleach,

Poisons – Paint spray cans, warfarin (rat poison), Spillable batteries, Spray Paints, Tear Gas, Radioactive – isotopic samples.

MISCELLANEOUS – Any other commodity that, by its nature, could cause damage to property or injury to person.

TOOLS

Axes and Hatchets, Cattle Prods, Crowbars, Hammers, Drills and Drill Bits, SAWS, Tools of any length, Screwdrivers, Wrenches and Pliers of any Length, Household cutlery

MARTIAL ARTS AND SELF-DEFENSE ITEMS

Billy Clubs, Black Jacks, Brass Knuckles, Kubatons, Pepper Spray/Mace or other Irritant incapacitant, Martial Arts Weapons. Night Sticks, Stun Guns/Shocking Devices, Nunchakus, Throwing Stars.

EXPLOSIVE AND FLAMMABLE MATERIALS, DISABLING CHEMICALS AND OTHER DANGEROUS ITEMS

The following are also not allowed in the SRA or ESRA

EXPLOSIVE MATERIALS

Blasting Caps, Dynamite, Fireworks, Hand Grenades, Plastic Explosives, Realistic Replica of Explosives,

Anything marked so as to indicate that it is, or contains an explosive, whether capable of producing a practical effect by explosion or not.

NARCOTICS

Hard drug of any kind; except on production of documented proof stating medical necessity.
