Car Talk12 Steps To Clear A Car Through Nigeria Customs by AutoJoshNG(op): 12:56pm On Jul 06, 2018
https://i64.tinypic.com/o94nev.jpg

A total of 181,404 vehicles were shipped to Nigerian ports in 2017 according to the National Bureau of Statistics. This figure is expected to increase this year and the vehicles have to be cleared through Nigeria Customs in order to get to the door steps of their owners or the car lots of the car dealers. Ordinarily, clearing a car from the ports should be an easy and largely automated task. However, it is plagued with bureaucracies, system downtime, crowd of people to struggle against and dangerous Apapa roads to contend with when clearing in Lagos.

Individuals are usually restricted from handling their clearing jobs themselves. Only licensed clearing agencies get online access and access cards to do the job. This does not mean it is not possible for an individual to clear a car personally. However, they will still need the assistance of a licensed clearing agency at one point or the other.

Today, Autojosh.com will be taking us through the 12 steps involved in clearing a car at the port.

As you read, don’t forget to tell us your port experience. Also drop some tips we can all learn from in the comment section.

1. Get the vehicle’s bill of lading:

It will be sent to you by your foreign shipping agent. They can send the original bill of lading through courier services (DHL, FedEx, etc). Alternatively you can opt for it to be sent to you via email if you want to do “Telex Release” or “Print at Destination” in which a copy of the bill of lading can be printed here in Nigeria.

Without this document, you won’t be able to do anything in respect of clearing your vehicle. The bill of lading contains the information of the vehicle you want to clear e.g the name, the year, VIN/chassis number, weight, name of vessel, port of origin, port of discharge as well as the details of the shipping agent abroad and the consignee who will receive the vehicle in Nigeria.

This is what a bill of lading looks like below

https://i67.tinypic.com/rbciu8.jpg

2. Apply for import duty valuation:

The application must be on the letter head paper of a registered and licensed custom clearing agency. A copy of the bill of lading will be attached to the application letter which will be addressed to the Nigeria Custom office e.g TINCAN, PTML Command etc. Unfortunately, individuals cannot apply for this valuation directly, so you have to apply for it through a clearing agency.

In response to the application letter which will be submitted physically, the custom officials will write the dollar value of the vehicle and this dollar value is what is used to calculate surface duty which is 35%. Additional 35% levy is charged on brand new cars which makes it 70%. This is how to calculate the surface duty assuming the dollar rate of a car is $3000.

$3000 X 35% (import duty rate) X 305.7 (custom official dollar exchange rate) = N320,985

Note that this value is just the surface duty and you’ll still pay tax, terminal, shipping and other charges.

3. Input the valuation into the custom server:

After getting the valuation from the custom command, the details will have to be inputted into the custom server. This is officially called “Direct Trader Input (DTI)”. However, it is popularly referred to as “punching”. It is the unique procedure for submitting electronic manifest to Nigeria Custom Service and it can only be done through the same registered agency whose letter head paper was used to apply for the valuation. The Tax Identification Number of the consignee will also be needed at this stage.

Upon completion, print the DTI also called “Assessment Notice” as well as SGD (Single Goods Declaration Form). The SGD gives a description of the transaction e.g type of vehicle, the terminal it is located, duty amount and content of the car if anything is loaded in it.

See sample copy of a Single Goods Declaration Form (SGD) below..

https://i63.tinypic.com/53a6p4.jpg

4. Pay import duty:

The import duty has to be paid to the bank that was stated while punching. The document needed by the bank for import duty payment is the assessment notice.

After the payment is made, the bank will issue a bank receipt. Some banks now accept online payment but evidence of payment will still be picked up from their branch.

5. Physical inspection and releasing from customs:

Collate all the documents and submit them to the custom office. The required documents are: bank receipt, assessment notice, SGD, valuation copy and bill of lading. Upon submission, the documents are registered then they’ll schedule the vehicle for physical examination. This will enable them sight the car and confirm that it tallies with the submitted documents.

They confirm the make, year and VIN/chassis number of the vehicle. They will also check the amount paid for duty and confirm if there is any load in the vehicle after which a report will be submitted to the releasing officer. At this point, the vehicle may not be released if the amount paid is less than the required import duty as an “Alert” may have been placed on that vehicle until the outstanding is paid.

https://i68.tinypic.com/2ltiqut.jpg

6. Print exit at the shipping company:

After releasing, proceed to the shipping company with the SGD to print exit copy. The is the simplest of all the processes.

7. Release at shipping company:

Collate all your documents to get the car released from the shipping company. The required documents include signed original bill of lading, SGD, exit copy and signed copy of the consignee’s identity (e.g Drivers Licence, International Passport, National ID and duly stamped/singed Certificate of Incorporation for companies). You also need a copy of the Form C30 (Custom document that permits clearing agencies to operate) and an authority letter from the agency whose details was used to apply for valuation. The shipping company will check all these documents then give an assessment to pay for shipping and terminal charges which can be paid as cash, through POS or online transfer.

8. Sign gate at custom office:

Proceed to register and sign at the gate office. The custom release document and the exit copy from the shipping company will be needed. They will check the duty paid and verify it on the system. After which, the officer in charge will stamp and sign-off your document.

https://i64.tinypic.com/2d966mb.jpg

9. Collect TDO (Terminal Delivery Order):

To collect the TDO, the shipping company’s payment receipt and copy of the signed gate document are required.

10. Receive delivery of the vehicle at the floor:

Documents can now be submitted for the vehicle to be delivered to the open floor ready to cross the final exit gate.

11. Final custom check:

At the floor, a custom officer and a shipping company official will do their final checks before the car drives out of the port.

12. Final fees:

Before the vehicle is driven out of the gate, final fees will be paid to custom officers on duty, clearing agent’s association, omo-onile fees etc.

Have you ever cleared a car at the port yourself? Tell us your experience in the comment section so we can all learn together.

Don’t forget to like, rate and share.

Note: These steps are subject to change without notice and may vary from one shipping line or terminal to another. We used cars shipped through Grimaldi and Sallaum RORO (Roll-on/Roll-off) as case study for this write up.

Just as Nigeria has a wholly indigenous automaker Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing – Ghana, too, has a wholly indigenous manufacturer.

The Kantanka auto brand is produced in Ghana. It is produced by Kantanka Automobile Company Limited.

The Kantanka Automobile is the brainchild of a Ghanaian businessman and clergyman, Apostle Kwadwo Safo. He is the head pastor of a church named the Christ Reformed Church. Before becoming a pastor, Safo had trained as a welder

The company was incorporated as a limited liability company in 2004. It was originally founded with the main objective to research into the manufacturing of automotive components and their combination with other parts outsourced from component suppliers to form a complete built unit.

Kantanka vehicles are sold in variety of colours and models. There is the Kantanka SUV, the Kantanka pickup, etc.

However, here is what stands Kantanka cars from other African auto brands.

The Kantanka, by and large, are entirely locally produced. Every component is produced in Ghana. Not bits and pieces imported from elsewhere then assembled in Ghana.

For instance, in their electric car (yes, Kantanka has it EVs), only its lighting system and the tires are imported; every other component is either built on site or sourced locally.

Which is why the Kantankas can proudly proclaim, “Made in Ghana”.

The company currently makes 150 cars monthly. The cheapest model costs 20,000 dollars.

The Ghanaian presidency purchased some of the cars from the Kantanka Group in a bid to boost the consumption of “made-in-Ghana” goods.

The Company has its manufacturing plant in Gomoa Mpoa in the central region of Ghana.

With the emergence of more and more wholly African automakers, hopefully, Africa will gradually exit her reputation as consumers only of vehicles from overseas.

CelebritiesThis Nigerian Monarch Is The Biggest Promoter Of Nigerian Auto Brand (see Photo) by AutoJoshNG(op): 1:18pm On Jul 04, 2018
Nations go the extra lenght to support brands that originates from them.

For instance, Americans always look for avenues to promote and support the Ford/GM Brands.

The Japanese support their Honda/Suzuki brand.

The French support their Peugeot/Citroen brands.

South Koreans support their Hyundai/Kai auto brands.

The Germans support their Mercedes Benz/ Volkswagen/Opel auto brand, etc.

Czech Republic supports their Skoda brand.

Even the Ghanaians now flaunt their Kantanka cars.

However, for some rather weird reasons, there does not seem to be any form of support by Nigerians for their indigenous auto brands.

Even more tragic, the Nigerian governments have become known for being in the business of paying only lip service to the idea of patronizing locally made products in order to boost locally economy.

Indeed, the Nigerian governments, who naturally ought to be the chief patrons of Nigerian auto manufacturing organizations, are still caught up in the frenzy of acquiring expensive foreign SUVs and other vehicles.

This is happening in a country where billions of naira are budgeted and spent annually on the acquisition of vehicles by our governments. Sadly, the beneficiaries are not the indigenous automakers such as Innoson Motors.

However, one Nigerian has stood out in making significant efforts to promote the Nigerian car brand. That Nigerian is a revered monarch, the Oluwo of Iwo, Osun state, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Akanbi.

In no small measure, the Oluwo of Owo has enthusiastically participated in numerous activities designed to promote the Innoson brand. He also acquired for himself one of the Innoson numerous brands, notably the new Innoson G80 SUV.

And he is never shy to flaunt it.

According to the Oba Akanbi, his decision to acquire the Innoson G80 vehicle was to send a message to the good citizens of the country on the need to patronise made-in-Nigeria products as a means of improving the nation’s economy.

Clearly, the 51 year old Oluwo of Iwo is one Nigerian that have chosen to place national interest over primordial interest.

TravelA Dangerously Unattached Container On A Trailer Spotted On The Road (see PHOTO) by AutoJoshNG(op): 10:40am On Jul 04, 2018
It is sad to say, but Nigeria is a place that anything goes.

Laws are easily flaunted, while the law enforcers look away.

Often the outcome of these lawlessnesses is that lives often get lost from avoidable mishaps. The tanker fire tragedy at the Otedola Bridge, Berger, Lagos, comes to mind.

The photo below shows how the unavoidable loss of lives are orchestrated with the law enforcers and the authorities conveniently paying no attention.

It is a photo of a truck transporting an unattached container on the road. Even worse is that the container stretches longer than the capacity than the trailer is design to carry.

Clearly, this is tragedy in orchestration.

When automobile manufacturers make cars, they typically fit the dashboards with some buttons, knobs or indicators. These dashboard features are designed to carry out several functions.

These dashboards items are designed to guide you in order to make safe driving decisions. In other words, these features are there to ensure the safety of the driver and the passengers.

Indeed, some of these functions should not be taken lightly, as ignoring, them could portend great danger.

Some of these dashboard features are there to alert the driver of a malfunction– or potential danger.

For instance, your fuel gauge or fuel indicator keeps you updated on the quantity of fuel you have left in your vehicle. The temperature gauge makes you aware of the temperature of your engine. The Hazard warning or “double indicator” alerts you to know if you are indicating to other motorists that you are in a distressed condition, etc.

Simply, the better your dashboard items work, the safer your driving will be.

However, a set of motorists in Lagos seem to believe that they can do without the functions of these dashboard items. They are the danfo drivers.

A typical Lagos danfo have absolutely nothing on their dashboard working – well, save for the steering wheel.

This further lends credence to the popular belief that Danfos in Lagos are the most unsafe vehicles to commute with.

Or what do you think?

BMW fans in Nigeria now have another reason to smile as a new baby has just been added to the line up of Bimmers they can use to portray the "Ultimate Driving Machine" image. It's the 2019 BMW X4 which gives a sportier drive due to wider tracks, a lower center of gravity, better aerodynamics and the latest generation suspension. This second generation BMW X4 arrives after BMW sold more than 200,000 units of the first generation X4 worldwide since it was launched in 2014.

It comes in standard xLine and M performance model variants. The four-cylinder unit in the xDrive30i generates 248 hp and peak torque of 258 lb-ft. This enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6 seconds. The BMW M Performance model comes with an inline six-cylinder engine which gets maximum output of 355 hp and peak torque of 365 lb-ft accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. Both model variants direct their engine’s power to the road via an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive as standard, resulting in effortless progress wherever you go.

An increase of approximately 3 inches in exterior length to 187.5 inches, 2.1 inches added to the wheelbase (now 112.7 inches), an extra 1.4 inches of width (75 inches) and an approximately 0.1 inch drop in height (to 63.8 inches) give to the all-new BMW X4’s dynamically stretched proportions. Short overhangs and powerfully formed, subtly hexagonal wheel arches emphasize the nearly perfectly balanced 50:50 distribution of weight between the front and rear axle.

When it comes to driver assistance and semi-automated driving, all the systems currently offered by BMW are available, such as the latest generation of Active Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go, whose capabilities include braking the car to a halt in stop-and-go traffic and automatically restarting to drive. The Driving Assistance Package includes Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Daytime Pedestrian Protection, Frontal Collision Warning with City Collison Mitigation, Cross Traffic Alert rear, and Speed Limit Information.

https://i68.tinypic.com/io0tuh.jpg

The options list likewise includes a WiFi hotspot offering a high-speed internet connection (LTE) for up to ten mobile devices. Apple CarPlay Compatibility is alsoincluded. Standard Navigation comes with a large 10.25 inch display and offers drivers multiple ways to interact including touchscreen, iDrive Touch Controller, as well as a cloud powered intelligent voice control, the optional 75 percent larger color Head-Up Display provides drivers the option of viewing navigation directions just under the direct line of vision.

The car’s impressively sporty and well footed handling characteristics are enhanced by the powerful lightweight braking system and the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, whose wealth of features includes the Antilock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Automatic Differential Brake (ADB-X), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Start-Off Assistant and Hill Descent Control (HDC).

The price of the 2019 BMW X4 will start at N36m for the 30i and N43m for the M40i after shipping to and paying import duty in Nigeria.

Tell us what you think about the all new 2019 BMW X4.

TravelWould You Sit On This Danfo Seat During Rush Hour In Lagos? (see PHOTO) by AutoJoshNG(op):
This was spotted this morning in Lagos.

It is a danfo with one of its seats without a seating surface.

It was captured during a Monday morning rush hour period. At such times, commercial vehicles are in extremely high demand. When available, their seats are subject to the most terrific competition.

in Lagos, in order not to be late to work, commuters typically do the weirdest things to secure a place in any available commercial bus. Some even scramble into the buses through the danfo windows. Anything, just to secure a seat in a danfo.

Also, during such periods, Danfo drivers and their conductor are kings, supreme authorities, alpha and omegas, etc.

They demonstrate not even slightest of courtesy for their passengers. They rain invective on any passenger who does not abide by their set rules. The comfort of their passengers is the very least of their care.

All that notwithstanding, all that the passengers are concerned about is how to reach their places of work.

So, during rush hour in Lagos, would you manage to sit on this sort of seat in a danfo?

Travel5 Safety Tips You Shouldn’t Ignore When A Tanker Is Involved In An Accident by AutoJoshNG(op): 9:06am On Jun 30, 2018
https://i64.tinypic.com/16is1eu.jpg

This month has been a worrisome month for Nigeria, almost in all aspects. No one prays for accidents, they can occur at any time. The recent tanker mishap on Otedola bridge, was quite tragic.
Again, we don’t pray it happens again, but what if it does ?
What safety tips can we put to practice to make sure we don’t experience such occurrences .
Here are some tips you should take into consideration when a tanker is involved in an accident .

1. Assume It Is Loaded With Fuel
Once a tanker is involved in an accident, it is safe to always assume its filled with inflammable content, even if you cannot see liquid coming out .Always assume it is loaded.

2. Don’t Try To Scoop Fuel
Even if you are very fast, in scooping liquid, at most you would scoop 50 or 100 litres. Is that how much your life is worth ?.Your life can’t be bought, fuel can always be bought.

3. RUN !
Run as fast as you can away from the tanker, you don’t have to wait to confirm if its spilling any content, just run away from it.
Don’t try to take pictures or videos, don’t try to observe. Run as fast as you can, don’t look back!! A split second can save your life
Note : If you notice it is spilling its content already, run in a direction that does not have a trail/flow of the liquid. This is important, because a trail of fire, is faster than you are.

4. Leave Your Car There
Just like the above, leave your car, especially when there is traffic congestion .Leave it !, don’t try to lock it. Just run, stand at an extremely safe distance and watch your car from there .Once the road has been declared safe by the authorities, you can go back and pick your car. If it gets burnt, hustle and buy another car. Your life is worth more than all the Toyota cars ever built put together.

If you are in a public bus, do the same thing.Exit the bus and run with the instructions given above.

5. Call The Authorities
Once you are at a safe distance, contact the authorities to report the accident. You can dial 112 or 767, its free .

Our sincere condolences to all those who lost loved ones in the recent accident on Otedola bridge

Please stay safe .

HealthAutojosh Reported About The Dirty State Of Ojuelegba, Then See What Happened by AutoJoshNG(op): 10:55am On Jun 29, 2018
Two days ago, Autojosh did a report to draw attention to the very unsanitary condition of Ojuelegba.

See the report here Is Ojuelegba The Dirtest Part Of Lagos?

The report was retransmitted on several other online platforms, notably Nairaland.

Ojuelegba is in Surulere, Lagos. It is one of the key transport nodes of Lagos state. It interconnects the city’s mainlands with Lagos Island and Victoria Island. It also serves as a connecting point for people who commute the three surrounding districts of Yaba, Mushin and Surulere.

In the report, photos of Ojuelegba in its filthiness were made available.

The report elicited not a few reactions.

Sadly, in some of the reactions, Autojosh was accused of being biased and that the reportage was politically motivated.

All that notwithstanding, it appears that the article got the attention of the authorities.

Just this morning, activities to restore Ojuelegba to a better sanitary state began.

Clearly, it shows that when we do not cry out, government intervention will never be achieved.

Indeed, the progress of Lagos should be our priority.

TravelRe: The Bus Terminal That Ambode Is Building At Agege (PHOTO) by AutoJoshNG(op): 2:31pm On Jun 28, 2018

TravelThe Bus Terminal That Ambode Is Building At Agege (PHOTO) by AutoJoshNG(op): 2:30pm On Jun 28, 2018
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has left no one in doubt about his desire to transform the mass transit infrastructure in Lagos state.

In line with that vision, several Bus terminals and about 100 bus stops are currently being constructed. These Bus terminals are intended to be loading and discharging bays for the state government-owned or -supervised BRT buses.

These are all part of the Gov. Ambode plan to rid the state of yellow commercial buses more popularly referred to as “Danfo”.

Some of the modern Bus Terminals currently being constructed include Okpta, NAHCO, Ajah and the Agege Bus terminals.

Autojosh went on a tour of the construction site of the proposed Agege Bus terminal.

The Bus terminal is situated at the old Iju Garage along the Agege-Iju road.

The project, which is currently undergoing massive construction works, was originally planned to be completed by June. However, the project suffered some delays. Thus, it is most unlikely that the June completion deadline would be met. The construction work started in February 2018.

The proposed modern Agege Bus terminal is expected to improve the mass transit situation of residents in that axis, as it will make public transportation more accessible to the people there.

The bus terminal will also enhance the aesthetics of the area, as it would greatly complement the 1.4 kilometers Agege flyover bridge currently being constructed just a few meters from the Bus terminals.

TravelSaudi Police Welcome Kingdom’s Women Drivers With Rose Flowers by AutoJoshNG(op): 8:50am On Jun 28, 2018
Few days ago, there was somewhat jubilation for the lady drivers in Saudi Arabia; they were let loose after years of being banned to drive in the country. This move was part of the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s effort to remove the country’s reputation of repressing women’s rights and to modernise some aspects of Saudi society.

You can read about it Here

After this ban was lifted, several pictures on social media have shown where Saudi traffic police officers are handing out roses to female drivers as they drive for the first time.

The Saudi women’s right to drivers’ license came into effect on June 24th, 2018.
