Arguably, no state or province in Africa can match Lagos state in terms of the enormous revenue that it generates. Lagos state - the 7th largest economy in Africa – boasts of a monthly IGR of N36billion (N432 Billion annually). This is exclusive of the annual over N120billion it gets from the Federal pursue. Indeed, with such a terrific fiscal muscle, far more is expected from the state’s administrators. The story around town is that Governor Ambode is in the process of introducing about 5000 air-conditioned luxury BRT buses to Lagos roads. The process is part of a grand plan to rid the state of the notorious yellow buses, otherwise referred to as “Danfo“. Indeed, this is a welcome development. Getting rid of those annoying Danfos is long overdue. Well, apart from the nuisance value that they provide, they also sometimes offer commuters a good measure of entertainment. All that notwithstanding, memories of Danfo will be one Lagosians will certainly not miss. Now, here are “11 things that we will love to miss about Danfos in Lagos”. “Wo Le Pelu Changi” This is an anthem of some sort by bus drivers and their conductors. They chant it as a threat to notify potential passengers of unpalatable consequences of boarding the danfo without the exact fare. Expecting passengers to disembark while the danfo is still in motion Time is of the essence to danfo drivers and their conductors. For reasons best known to them, they are always in a hurry. Sparing a moment to park in order for a passenger to disembark is such a huge luxury to them. In Lagos, plying on the Inland waterways are several commercial ferries and motorized high capacity boats. They are owned by private individuals, institutions and the Lagos state government. They operate on the waterways in and around Lagos state. They are an alternative to traveling on the chaotic Lagos roads. These ferry services are offered to transport commuters to a distant destination within minutes, as opposed to hours that it will normally take to travel to the same destination by roads. A good number of Lagosians use them, especially those who reside in far-flung suburban axis but who work or trade in distant locations. Autojosh.com was at some of the jetties built by NIWA (National Inland Waterways Authority), the Lagos state governments and some private individuals and institutions. We got first hand information on how much it costs to patronize these commercial ferry services. Our observation is that there are several, though slight, variations in the fares demanded for trips to some specific destinations. These variations are determined by the capacity of the engines of the ferries , the quality of the boats, etc. However, we also observed something as it relates to the fares being charged by the ferry services operators: the amount currently being charged as fares by these commercial ferry operators would be significantly reduced if there were more ferries participating and competing with the few existing ones on the Lagos Inland waterways. It goes without say, if this mode of mass transit is sincerely explored by the government, it would significantly decongest the roads and rid the state of the legendary road traffic gridlocks in Lagos. Below are the average amount charged for ferry rides to different locations together with the average duration it takes to complete a trip. The United Nations defines a megacity as a very large city with a total population of more than 10 million people. Current estimates of the population of Lagos state hovers around 22 million inhabitants. Indeed, Lagos state is one of the world’s megacities. Of that massive population, about 95% of the residents of Lagos state commute by road within the state. The roads have become enormously inadequate. Meanwhile, the population of vehicles keep increasing at an exponential rate. The result of all these is that traffic bottlenecks and gridlocks have become the norm rather than the exception. Lagosians now find themselves existing in an unenviable reality where incredible amounts of otherwise productive times are wasted in traffic – something that a serious government of any society would find extremely worrisome. Except we delude ourselves, no amount of road traffic solutions – 5000 BRTs, Flyovers, Bridges, fancy Bus terminals, etc. – would rid the state of its reputation as a traffic challenged state caused by an inordinate amount of vehicles on the roads.
