I beg to differ, this is very educative though and I had to google it. Stalemate is a situation where there is no movement, or no score, and to make a breakthrough, means a team took the lead eg breaking the deadlock.
This doesn't mean the guardian journalist is an all knowing. Because you are English doesn't mean you have 100% command of the language.
