SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) – Facebook fueled fresh talk Friday about its own mobile phoneafter the leading social network scheduled a press announcement for next week. Shortly after the Facebook invitation went out for the April 4 event, the technology news site TechCrunch reported the announcement would be a modified version of the Google Android operating system with “deep native Facebook functionality.” Another report on “9 to 5 Google” said Facebook designing the software for the new smartphone, which would be made by Taiwan’s HTC. Facebook’s invitation said only “Come See Our New Home On Android.” The reports, if accurate, could explain the long speculation about a “Facebook phone” to help the social network better monetize its mobile platform by featuring Facebook prominently on the phone. Facebook has long held firm it has no intention of building its own smartphone, saying instead it would rather weave access to the social network into software running the gamut of handsets. News of the April 4 event at social network’s main campus in the Silicon Valley city of Menlo Park came as the research firm IDC released a Facebook-backed study showing that smartphones have become people’s close friends in the US. US smartphone owners tend to be connected from the instant they rise until they fall sleep and revel in every minute of it, according to the study. A weeklong IDC survey of more than 7,000 people ranging in age from 18 to 44 years old with iPhones or Android-powered smartphones showed that four out of five check their handsets within 15 minutes of waking. The top three applications used were for messaging; Web browsing, and Facebook, inthat order, according to IDC. “People have a universal need to connect with others, especially those they care deeplyabout,” IDC researchers said. “This coupled with mass market adoption ofsmartphones means that social engagement via phones has become mainstream.” At a TechCrunch Disrupt conference in San Francisco in September, Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg said the social network giant is focused on mobile devices. “It is really clear from the stats and my own personal intuition that a lot of energy in the ecosystem is going to mobile, not desktop (computers),” Zuckerberg said during an on-stage interview. “That is the future,” he continued. “We are going to be doing killer stuff there.” Facebook has made a priority of following its more than one billion members onto smartphones and tablet computers, tailoringservices and money-making ads for mobile devices. “Now, we are a mobile company,” Zuckerberg said at the conference. Zuckerberg rejected suggestions that Facebook would make its own smartphone, adamant that the company had no intention of stepping into the fiercely competitive handset hardware arena. “Apple, Google, everyone builds phones — we are going in the opposite direction,” Zuckerberg said at the time. “We want to build a system deeply integrated in every device people want to use.” source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/03/facebook-phone-may-ring-true-april-4/ nice development in the tech world, who know what seun is planning next for nairaland . |
By HENRY UMORU & JOSEPH ERUNKE ABUJA—Senate, yesterday, said it was prepared to back capital punishment for oil thieves and those engaged in bunkering if it would solve the problem of pipeline vandalism. Inaugurating the Senate Joint Committee on Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB, at the Senate Conference Room, Senate President David Mark, said that there was no bigger punishment that could be meted out to oil thieves in Nigeria than capital punishment. Mark said he would not hesitate to append his signature to any law that could recommend death penalty for oil bunkerers as he regretted that Nigeria had lost so much revenue in recent times due largely to illegal oil bunkering, adding “oil theft deserves capital punishment.” While charging the committee to recommend ways of curbing oil bunkering, Mark insisted that “the law must have a huge punishment on those that steal our oil to serve as a deterrent to other people who plan on stealing our oil. “The Bill must also ensure that the current rate of oil theft in the country is minimised to the barest minimum. “It seems we are having a bad name internationally because of the rate of oil theftin the country. Oil theft deserves capital punishment. “If it is the public wish, I will endorse a death penalty for oil thieves, if it will stop oil theft and bunkering. It is an unusual situation so it deserves an unusual remedy and drastic punishment.” Senator Mark assured that the Senate would do everything possible to ensure the PIB was given serious and accelerated attention. He said: “We are taking this bill seriously. Theworld is changing so fast. So is the petroleum industry. This is not a new bill buta review of the bill to meet with international best practices. “Nigerians are patriotic enough to know that what we are doing is in the best interest of all Nigerians. We have to update the bill so that we can encourage investors. The bill is a win-win situation for all the parties involved.” Mark appealed to Nigerians to cooperate with the committee by coming forward withways on how to reposition the country’s oil sector, adding that members of the four joint- committees were not only men of proven integrity, but with the interest of Nigeria at heart. He said, “We are aware of the competition involved in the oil industry in the world. I want to assure you that all the members of this committee are patriotic Nigerians and the report of this committee will be true reflections of the public views. No member of the committee has a fixed position, this is the first time we are putting four committees together and make the bill that all Nigerians will be happy with. “This bill must show transparency in the oil industry so that investors will come and get a return on their investment”, adding: “We also want to explore oil in some other parts of the country and not only in the Niger Deltaas we are doing now. “There is no reason why we can’t find oil in the northern part of the country. The PIB bill is a bill to unite the country and not divide it.It will open up the industry so that we can attract new investors.’’ In his vote of thanks, Co-chairman of the Senate Joint Committee on PIB, Senator Umaru Dahiru, PDP, Sokoto South, assured that members of the committee were dedicated and would do a thorough job thatwill be appreciated by all. He said the members will not only work as a team but take the interest of all Nigerians at heart while carrying out the public hearing on the PIB. He appealed to Nigerians to come forward and give useful advice to the committee so that it could give recommendations that will reposition the country’s oil sector. It will be recalled that the Senate had referred the bill to the Senate Committees onPetroleum Resources (Upstream and Downstream); Gas; Legal and Judicial Mattersand Human Rights for detailed legislative action including a public hearing. The joint committees are expected to report back to Senate at plenary in six weeks. Chairman, Senate Committee Petroleum Resources (Upstream), Senator Emmanuel Paulker is the co- chair of the joint committees. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/03/senate-advocates-death-penalty-for-oil-thieves/ The question is why don't they push forward a death penalty for corruption? Preferably death by hanging, i sure will love to see some of them dangle for their crimes. |
Lets hope the continued bilateral and multilateral dialogue and diplomacy proves effective. But in the very end, Israel is the onlyone who can determine what is best for its safety and security. Israel vs. Iran Fight Breakdown Arms Control and Proliferation by Scott Firsing | on December 13th, 2011 |
Israel recently teamed up with Greece , who also has the S-300, to obtain information on how to defeat Iran’s radar system. Israel flew a number of its jets into the S-300’s massive electronics and was able to record details about defeating, jamming and circumventing the potent radar system. The exercise was appropriately called “Glorious Spartan.” Israel itself has the assistance of NATO’s early warning radar station in Turkey, which is there to protect the Jewish State against Iranian missile attacks. Ankara agreed to hostthe radar in September as part of NATO’s missile defense system aimed at countering ballistic missile threats from neighboring Iran. However, Israel recently revealed more detailsabout its own air defense systems when it hosted international journalists in May. This included a closer look at its Iron Dome anti-rocket missile defense system. Israel alsohas the Arrow system, which came about via President Ronald Reagan’s Star Wars program. Israel assisted in the research and development effort, and the latest Arrow 2 airdefense system can intercept missiles at a high altitude according to air defense standards. The Arrow 2 can cover major parts of Israel, but the more advanced and sophisticated Arrow 3 is currently being developed. Senior Israeli military officers described a “new era” in defense, now that rockets and missiles have become the “main effort” of Israel’s enemies and the civilian population is on the front line. PURE SIZE- edge: Iran Israel is only 8,000 sq miles and could fit into Florida eight times. Compare this to Iran’s area of 636,374 square miles and we see a real difference here. Iran is only 4% smaller than Alaska. NUCLEAR CAPABILITY- edge: Israel The one way to take down a bigger enemy is with a bigger weapon and that is what Israelpossesses. According to Jane’s Defense Weekly, Israel has between 100 and 300 nuclear warheads, but most guesses are between 60 and 400. The Israeli military possess land, sea and air methods to deploy their nuclear weapons. This includes, tactical aircraft, submarine launched cruise missiles and ICBMs. COMBAT READINESS- edge: Israel Israel is by far the most combat ready country in the region. It has been involved in numerous campaigns including the 2007 Israeli fighter-bomber attack on a suspected nuclear installation in Syria. The last real operation launched by the Iranian air force was during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s. BIG QUESTION MARKS: The area size factor alone is enough to prove the point that Israel cannot attack Iran by itself. It would simply not be able to inflict enough damage unless it uses nuclear weapons, and it wouldn’t dare cross that line. Yiftah Shapir, director of the Military Balance Project at Tel Aviv University’s Institute for National Security Studies argues that Israel is “far from capable of disabling the Iran nuclear program. That would take at least a month of sustained bombing. That’s not something Israel can carry out alone.” With that in mind and if this war breaks out, will America be Israel’s only ally? The UK? Saudi Arabia? And on Iran’s side? The vast majority of the Middle East? This also leads to a whole host of questions: • Could the Israelis attack over Iraqi airspace? Will Turkey allow them to use theirs? What if Iran bombs the NATO installation? Would Turkey allow them then? How about Saudi airspace? They said they would in the past . • What role would US have in the Iranian attacks? Where will they be launched from? The Qatari emir has said the U.S. will not be allowed to use its military base in the tiny Gulfstate in a military conflict with Iran, the Financial Times reported . • Would Hezbollah and Hamas strike Israel along with Iran? • What role would China and Russia play, as they are now claiming they will protect Iran ifthey are attacked? • Roughly 27,000 US forces are deployed at an array of bases and sites throughout the Gulf, along with a 50,000-strong contingent in Iraq and thousands more aboard naval ships, a US military official told AFP . How can Washington reassure their allies (Qatar, UAE, Oman etc) that they will be protected from Iran? • Will those countries’ allow the US military tocontinue to use their air bases? Over flight rules? Access to strategic water routes? No one wants this war, but it seems to becoming closer and closer as long as Iran continues with their nuclear ambitions. It would be a war filled with an unthinkable amount of human causalities and it would destroy the world’s economy. |
As the clock ticks, it appears Israel will have to pick between two frightful scenarios;attack Iran or live with a nuclear Iran and the constant fear of annihilation. This choice crossed my mind during a recent trip to Israel. While at the ancient fortress of Masada overlooking the Dead Sea, the tour guide proclaimed that Masada is one of the Jewish people’s greatest symbols. Israeli soldiers sometimes use it for training and they are known to take an oath there: “Masada shall not fall again.” Therefore, knowing the Israeli’s and their history, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they eventually pick option one. If they do, and theoretically war does breaks out [but lets hope it doesn’t], it will undoubtedly be a missile and air force fight. Therefore, it makes logical sense to scrutinizethe weaponry/capability on both sides. AIR FORCE: edge: Israel Fighters/bombers are the main aircraft that would likely be used. Israel has a range of Lockheed Martin F-16s and Boeing’s F-15. Israel has ordered Lockheed’s F-35 and the sale has been approved by the US Congress. However, it was announced yesterday [12 December] that the Israeli air force is upgrading its Lockheed Martin F-16C/D jets amid growing concerns the delivery of 20 of the US F-35 stealth fighters will be delayed past 2017. Israel also has a large UAV arsenal. It was reported in November that the Israeli’s largest unmanned aircraft, Eitan, is scheduledto begin operations within several months after eight years in development. Eitan was developed in order to reach Iran and Sudan. Iran, on the other hand, has a number of F-14’s, Dassault Mirage F1s and MIG29s. However, the issue of spare parts and replacement equipment has hit them hard. Iran was supposedly negotiating with Russia to buy 250 Sukhoi Su-30 “Flanker” fighter-bombers in 2007, but it is believed that this deal never took place. MISSILES: edge: neither Neither country can be seen as having an edge in this particular war. Iran has made great strides in its missile technology. In October 2010, Iran carried outan unannounced test of its Sejil-2 missile, sometimes known as the “Ashura.” The Sejil is a solid propellant missile with a range of approximately 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles). It was first flown successfully in November 2008. In February of this year, Iran successfully tested a modified Shahab-3, a liquid-fueled missile based on the North Korean Taepodong series. It reportedly has a range of approximately 900 kilometers, bringing northern Israel into Iran’s range. One recent blow to Iran’s missile program came i n November when General Hasan Moghaddam, a commander of the Revoluntary Guard and missile expert was killed in an explosion at an ammunition depot west of Tehran. Nevertheless, the threat to launch “150,000 or more” missiles if Iran was attacked, was delivered to army volunteers by Iranian Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi on 11 December. Iranian officials have also threatened retaliation against Turkey’s NATO installation, should an attack on Iran take place. For more information, see the International Institute for Strategic Studies Iran’s Ballistic Missile Capabilities: A net assessment. Meanwhile, Israel is reportedly deploying its own Jericho missiles around Jerusalem and in the West Bank. It may be a military drill to test a new engine for the long-range Jericho III design. Its specifications are classified, but military experts believe the Israeli missile to be capable of carrying a nuclear warhead to any destination in the Middle East, most of Europe, North America and Africa. Ballistic missiles are one thing, but the ground to air missile capability would play anequally crucial role in this war. Iran has in its possession Russia’s S-300 Russian ground-to-air radar systems. The S-300 is considered one of the world’s most versatile radar-missile systems and can simultaneous track hundreds of semi-stealth cruise missiles, long-range missiles and aircraft, including airborne monitoring jets. According to military sources, as many as ten intruders can be simultaneously engaged. Formore on Iran’s defense strategies, see the report by Meepas , an independent political and economic analysis company. |
I just stumbled on this article and thought i should share with y'all, particularly the Iranian-Nigerian and the Israeli-Nigerian fanatics. |
Onyeka Onwenu and Chinua Achebe are perhaps amongst the most celebrated people from Eastern Nigeria, but I'll like to know who we respect more and why. |
Ezyoung: You said 9 o. I'm only seeing 1the guy is being deceitful. Wants you to visit his blog. |
Did Chinua Achebe Actually Do Anything To Promote Development In Nigeria? Not to my understanding. He wrote books, poems and all soughts, he made Nigeria and Africa proud. He stood out to many as an Igbo man and probably" only carried the nigerian flag outside of Nigeria. I believe he was one of the most respected igbo men this country has witnessed and would have gone a long way in unifying Nigeria if he had attempted Nigerianalizing the igbos. Sadly the opposite seemed to have been the case. Frankly its a shame the non-igbos have a bad image of him. But mark me, we would all be the foolish ones if we let our ethnic sentiments affect our progress. I am igbo, i am yoruba, i am hausa. WHAT HAS THIS IDENTITY EVER DONE FOR YOU? I look forward to the day when ethnic groups lose their value and importance.. Proudly Nigerian till the end. |
Its like the whole of NL is viewing this topic. |

@mrvictor Trust me, that was no comet. I've always been a freak for astrology and those characteristics aren't similar to those possessed by comets. Nice try though. And i am sure your sighting must have been cool. Did you get any photos? |
Man, that's pretty interesting. I guess this sightings aren't so popular in Nigeria. Makes me wonder if we hardly pay attention to the sky or the sightings are more common in the western world. |
Tund£:unemployable graduates? Please speak for yourself. Its okay to condemn yourself but you don't have the right to condemn the entire products of Nigerian Universities. |
jammyng: For those thinking Nigeria should be on that list, think again. Nigeria is a super rich nation!lol plus we won the African Nations Cup. |
In Nigeria mysterious event are often given spiritual interpretations. A close relative recently encountered what the foreign media would describe as a UFO (unidentified Flying Object), he saw an object descending slowly from the sky at night, the object was bright as a star, probably the size of a 25liter keg, the object's light went out seconds after landing. He didn't talk about it in the morning fearing it was probably an illusion, however he saw same the following night and another relative confirmed seeing a light flashing brightly around the reported time. (note: there wasn't light then and its impossible for a car's light to have penetrated from that angle). He didn't snap the object as he was terrified and the last thing on his mind was his phone. Click this link for other strange sightings and please share yours if you've seen any. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_reported_UFO_sightings?seg=1 |
Through the rise and passage of time man has selected and recognized people they regard as outstanding and worthy of the coveted position of Heroes and what not. But nowadays its crazy who we celebrate as heroes: Osama: bombings and murder. Obama: first US black president. Chilean miners: for getting trapped underground. St. Valentine: got himself killed for officiating marriage. Mandela: go himself jailed for his people and self. Abiola (MKO): for aspiring to be president against all odds and got killed. For who? Ojukwu: for resisting being short changed and deprived of his rightful position as head of state.. Don't mean to bore you but you know how it all ended up. Gowon: for short changing Ojukwu and killing several Nigerians in "uniting" the country. Who knows what we will celebrate next. May be s e u n for putting this on the front page. Please Note: i know this men did much more than this, but this is my way of using sarcasm to show how the world operates. |
If in our so-called chaotic status we can achieve this much (with the massive corrupting, insecurity and what not). There is no telling what we would achieve in 5years of unity and focus. This weird school boy beef African countries and citizens are brewing doesn't help. Concentrate on conquering the world. Proudly Nigerian. |
I don't think ice prince is wrong here, that's if indeed he had any contact with glo. If other artists are willing to settle for less does that mean he should? He knows his value so he is aiming higher, ain't nothing wrong with that. |
WHY NOT? GIVE WHAT BELONGS TO CEASER TO CEASER and when you are done, i will raise my own group and ask for my share. Lol. On a serious note. Justice in this country has lost its way. I mean look around and you'll see it. IS THIS BORNU STATE'S WAY OF SOLVING POVERTY IN THE STATE? |
Fast ke? Speed kills oo. I can't afford to go on a 12hrs fast for those guys who in all sincerity don't give a damn about me or other average Nigerians. If their captain and coach are willing to join who knows i just might skip breakfast as a form of fast. |
This is very grim, and all this talk of propaganda is pretty lame. North Korea keeps testing rockets, for what? Even as crazy as Iraq seemed orthe west painted the to be, they were still comfortable, travelled as they wished, watched tv etc. North Korea has too much to hide for a nation that claims to be a peoples republic (just like the worst of things have the best of names). I Thank Baba God for my country sha. This seems like the George orwell's 1984 in reality. |
Its unfair what you guys are writing. JUST BECAUSE A HERO HAS FALLEN, IS NO REASON TO KICK SAND IN HIS EYES. Majek is a great musician who made bad choices and he sees another doing same. shouldn't he speak? Afterall s e un can sensor nairaland and yet preach for FOI bill. |
By Tony Ubani Grisha Ghead, the Egyptian referee who officiated the Nigeria versus Zambia match have been sent home. Sports Vanguard gathered that the referee was sent home by the Confederation of African Football after it was discovered that the penalty he awarded to Zambia which resulted in the equaliser against Nigeria, late in the second half of the crucial encounter was questionable. Our checks confirmed that the decision to send the Egyptian home was taken after CAF had undertaken a review of the tape of the match and it was concluded that the penalty was uncalled for and undeserved. http://vanguardngr.com/2013/01/afcon-egyptian-ref-sent-home/ this is like medicine after death. The Zambian FA should be investigated for any link to this injustice against Nigeria. I hope it serves as a deference to other Refs. |
izenco2005: Solomon says all na vanity upon vanityif King Solomon had seen this, he would have reconsidered. Lol. This one pass vanity oo. |
i said it oooooooooooooo! Nigeria vs Burkina Faso 1-1. Chai |
Fingers crossed and best of luck to Keshi/super eagles. Good hunting. |
How dare you guys type all this rubbish. Those guys daily put their lifes on the line for Nigeria while some have lost theirs. And you sit/stand composing this load of garbage. What's the highest you've committed to ensure national security? Freaking cowards! I wish the injured speedy recovery and i pray the lives of the fallen doesn't go in vain. Its a shame and disgrace to our government, not the soldiers. |
Imagine you are in China eating in a restaurant and you discover you've been served a dish of foetus instead of you initial order, lol |
