i tot you said the federal Government controls the transmission? can you expantiate on that using the akwa ibom model?
There are three segments of power: Generation, Transmission and Distribution.

Generation and Distribution have been privatized why Transmission is in the hands of the FG.

Its is possible to by pass transmission within a locality (say a state) so if you generate power in Akwa Ibom and want to sell in Akwa Ibom, you don't need transmission, you just need to talk directly to the distribution company in charge of Akwa Ibom and sell the generated power to them directly. But if your customer is in Lagos or Benin, then you need to talk to Transmission so they can get the power to Benin/Lagos for you.

meccuno:
Yeah. they did this so that we all can move at their pace and level. because if other states are allowed to grown, then we would see the real reason why Nigeria should have never been a Nation.
This is wrong. The reason why power was sent to the national grid was because of cost. It's cheaper to generate power via water (hydro stations) than gas because the input for hydro stations which is water cost nothing. So using a central grid meant a person in kano paid the same as a person in Enugu.

Now the law has been amended (since 2014) and anyone is free to generate power and distribute as they like.

Transmission is different from Distribution and the FG only controls Transmission.

True!

Even as a predominantly back end engr , i still occasionally have tasks that involve me displaying some kind of information on the UI.

Personally though I'm not a fan of JS especially for someone who's just learning. In the bid to make things easy with syntax I feel your foundation ends up not being as strong as someone who learnt C++ or Java first. Just my opinion though

I agree with the bold part. Even though my official title is full stack developer and I have worked with Javascript frameworks such as angular and Vue, I find it hard to say I know Javascript.

That's because there is no other alternative. There is no other Nigerian forum with more visitors. People are actually attracted to the number of visitors and not even Nairaland itself. Nairaland is just lucky because it started when there were very few Nigerian sites to compete with. So it always appeared on Google search results.

Why haven't you built the alternative?

This forum should have been generating enough money to be able to pay for video hosting. Unfortunately seun's lack of innovation makes Nairaland generate less than it's potential. Video hosting isn't that expensive on cloud computing platforms so I don't think money is an excuse.

Innovation has nothing to do with it. Nairaland has a content problem. This closest western site that you can compare to Nairaland is Reddit and Reddit did its first UI change last year.

Reddit has managed to keep its "trolls" under control but it's very hard to have an intellectual discussion on Nairaland.

I should tell you for free how adding videos would increase revenue? You're very funny.

Let Seun pay people to teach him how to increase revenues. If he wants to run NL like a Secondary Sch project, that's his problem.

So why are you complaining?

Story.

Data isn't cheap for Nigerians but YouTube is no. 3 in Nigeria?

Legit dot NG is doing what Nairaland has refused to do. Go and check Alexa ranking, where was NL 2 years ago, where is it today?

I have told you, stop defending mediocrity.

I'll say it again, stop comparing Western companies to Nigerian companies, they are vastly different. There's a Youtube app specially built for Africa. Google can afford to do that because the mint money.

By you have not still said how adding video would increase Nairalands revenue.

Dude, even the light-on-data microblogging site, Twitter, now supports video-hosting.
There's really no valid excuse as to why a site that was created in 2005 (14 years ago) still can't do this.
Stop comparing American companies with Nairaland, it shows ignorance.

Twitter has lost $2 billion since it started. Before Twitter went public, it had lost over $400 million. Do you think Nairaland can afford to lose a tenth of that?
Sports / Re: When Jay Jay Okocha disciplined Oliver Kahn during match (Throwback) by AZeD1(m): 7:03pm On Mar 15, 2019
To those who are asking why Nairaland doesn't do video, here's a very simple explanation.

Video is heavy both ways...

Adding video to Nairaland would drastically increase the infrastructure cost for Nairaland but would bring very little revenue.
Also a lot of Nigerians access Nairaland via their mobile phones and believe it or not, data isn't cheap (or even fast) to a lot of Nigerians so adding video means Seun loses out on people who cant afford unlimited data which would in turn limit viewship and that leads to less revenue from ads.

It's easy to should innovation/improvement or whatever you want to call it but at the end of the day, Nairaland is a business to Seun numbers rule in the world of Business.

Successes have results failures have excuses.

Users are already complaining about basic innovation lacking on NL and you're here defending mediocrity.

I doubt if you've run a single successful enterprise.

Users have been complaining about Nairaland since day one but Nairaland is still king in Nigeria.... Ask yourself why.

Also, the key to running a successful enterprise, is learning to say NO.

Small hosting companies have.

Whatever the cause of Cloudflare errors, is it too complex for NL to resolve?

Yes, NL doesn't need a customer service line. Also, it doesn't need an email, doesn't need a physical address or a physical representative.

Hope you're satisfied?

2)Also do you know the function of Cloudflare?

That's why Seun needs to be more creative. Who does Fb pay server fees for video hosting too?

Let me tell you, I registered with my first moniker on NL in 2007. That was when Hi5, Yahoo Messenger and MySpace were still reigning.

Nairaland of then and now has no radical changes. Go to your profile and you'll still see Yim there. Who still uses Yim?

Seun needs to get really creative. The reason NL still exists is because there's no serious competition. You think NL would survive if those guys in Naij enter this forum sphere?

I'm saying this cos I want Seun to make much more progress.

I believe there are football leagues(amateurs) in all provinces and you just have to find them(reddit/{province}) is a good way to start your search. Alternatively, you can start one.

Just because you responded kindly this time with some logical thoughts i decide to reply.

1) Bro my father is not a politician either i am Ok with it or not does not solve the problem. It all because of man-know-man system and the truth is everybody is part of the problem. Do not exclude yourself. If your uncle works at NNPC or CBN would you reject to work there if he offers you a position Be sincere with yourself. it is a problem everybody has contribution to fix and not just the leader. Nigeria problems is not basically leadership but we the people but we deceive ourselves a lot.
2) Let not argue this - the facts and statistics are there to analyse this. I am a mathematician and without mathematics there wont even be computer science. And if we start mentioning names you cant stand it. I see your point here is just about emotions. That is my opinion about your thought there.
3)Either I am fine or not - the point is the boss has done what he thinks is right and that is fair to him as well. There is nothing like justice in mathematics - what is fair to you might not be fair to me hence what is fair or not cant be mathematically proven. Do not forget that it is business and it is all about money; what if she is using her bottom to bring in more money by bringing more clients. Why do you banks employ beautiful girls for sales. Some of them dont know anything but they are beautiful and can speak English. So you see nothing is fair in life.

Nothing is fair in life bro try and see the world around you and tell me what is fair.

1) How can Nigeria get better when there's no semblance of fairness? It is impossible to attain true fairness because we are human but why tell a child to study hard when the chances of getting a job without knowing someone in power limited?. How can you tell civil servants to be diligent when promotion is by who you know?
The first step to building a country is by trying to make the country as fair for everyone as possible.

2) I have a B.sc in Mathematics and an M.sc in Computer Science.......

3)Like I have said before, true fairness cannot be achieved but I will always try to support fairness when I can. As of today, I don't think I would work in a company that doesn't offer paternity leave as one of its benefits because if and when I decide to have a child, I want to be there in the beginning.

You are the most clueless person I have ever seen. Just look at the bolded and the rubbish you vomited - "In Nigeria, most companies(Banks, Oil companies ) do not pay contract staff the same amount they pay their regular staff even though they do the same job. That's unfair. If two people do the same thing, they should be rewarded the same."

So it is no longer gender game but fairness. Now let me tell you what you dont know the last place i worked before leaving Nigeria I earn more than the person I met there. He is way older than me, experience wise he has it more. But i was smart when negotiating my salary before joining the company - I earned almost 3 times his salary. So because he was not smart enough to know his value i should tell the company to reduce mind too just so be fair to him.Tell me what is fair in life?? Blah blah banks oil companies... ofcourse it is not fair. Tell me what is fair in life? please tell me??

My friend was a contract staff in one of the banks some years ago; he looked at his future with his salary and left for his dear life today he is earning almost what a junior manager earn in a bank and you here wailing to me.

You must be funny to think anything is fair in life. How old are you if I may ask?? You are wailing over fairness in life. Smh!!!!

You quickly wailing about Ada Lovelace but could not answer the rest of my question. Who founded Apple, Twitter, Facebook. Who wrote the C language, C-Sharp, PHP, Fortran.... Out of thousands of developers that have impacted the world positively you wailed about two and you wont allow me to rest.

1) So are you ok with Nigerian politicians putting their kids in CBN/NNPC or whatever the likes?

2) The two most important were done by women..... with Grace Hopper, there's no C# or Fortran.....
PS: A woman was part of the Fortran team.

3) Would you be fine if your boss promoted a lady over you if though you know she's does nothing? Would you say she was smart by using her "bottom" power to negotiate?

Hello Everyone.

So I'm awaiting PPR and considering where to settle. From my research here and via google I picked interest in London Ontario. It appears that the city has affordable housing, friendly weather. But I'm wondering why much people don't go there? Pple seem to prefer Toronto and some other much expensive cities in the GTA.

Why is this? Please help with ur opinions, so I don't make a mistake.

@Thecongo2, @bsbabe, @wholesomegrace, @naijaforeigner thanks for the information shared about the place. I'll appreciate more sha, make una no vex abeg

Job prospects are more in the GTA than in London.

Its the same thing in Nigeria, housing is way cheaper in Ondo than in Lagos but your job prospects are way higher in Lagos.

Please tell us any company you know that do not pay women equally.Mind you over 60% of people in HR are women so who is cheating women in this regards?? I have worked in several places and I have never seen where women earn less than men doing same things. Where do you work and do women earn less?? Sometimes we might be doing same things and I am more experience than you are, shouldn't that be considered in the pay too? 2. Keep deceiving yourself. Name the top best programmers or engineers in the world who have changed the world through engineering or programming. It's a always a surprise to see how much hatred the liberals in the US have for their own president no matter his decision for the betterment of the country.
My opinion about equality between a man and a woman - are men better than women in terms of capability? Hell no, there is nothing to support this scientifically. But the truth is for reason unknown to anybody men have proven they are better leaders and are capable of making the right decision on the average than women. When i see people trying to convince women to venture into something just to challenge men i laugh at all these.

Today people cry about equal pay blah blah without putting into consideration the kind of jobs both love to do. So you want an Engineer or a doctor to earn same as receptionist?

We have to understand our differences and respect it. Telling girls to where whatever they feel like without looking at the consequence on the part of men is selfish and not a good advice.
1) Equal pay is about paying people the same wages for doing the same job. If you don't understand something, its better to be silent than say rubbish.
2) Men are not better than women in engineering or programming and women are not better than men in customer service.
3) There's no consequence to a man when a woman dresses however she seems fit. If you have a problem with how a woman dresses, see your doctor.
