Then why are they not investing in education or whatever it is that is the problem?

The problem is not the cost of doing business in Nigeria. The problem is we don't have the technical know-how to mass produce that could lower production cost. In addition to that we don't have knowledgeable entrepreneurs who are ready to invest in production in Nigeria.

Bros stop being defensive on some thing that's almost impossible.
So let's say the trader accepts the cash.how does he now pay his suppliers?by chartering a bullion van to take the money to his supplier's premises so as to avoid 3% excess limit deposit charge ABI?something that could have been transferred for N65?
Do you know most companies won't even accept cash from retailers/distributors due to inconvenience in conveying the money and also taxation policies?
FIRS wants to know how much a business is moving at all times so it can be effectively taxed na grin
Also you talk of safes, are you sure you know how much they cost?
Are you in business sir?
Supermarkets, distributors and those business handle cash. I have right folks who run those business.
For every pos transaction, it's cost about 2.5% + 100 or 50 naira... I'll confirm and get back to you.
Some comes to buy stuff worth N500 and your profit is like N10 .. using a pos for that transaction puts you at a loss.

I worked in industry (Fintech) and I know people who do cash based business and this policy is wack.

If you want people to useless cash, you reward them not publish them.

It's common human psychology.

How much do you pay for interbank transfer charges?
N52.

If you think it's small, next time you go and buy something, pay an extra N52

Why should any normal person need to be forced before knowing they should stop carrying huge amounts of cash all over the place? As a business involved in sales, simply get a POS. As an individual, simply do an online transfer. We always lament over irrelevant things in Nigeria.
POS/Web transactions cost about 2.5% + 100 naira capped at 2000.

I worked in fintech before I left Nigeria and I personally know folks who's business is cash based and I can tell you it's a terrible policy.

This is just aimed at making more people have bank accounts.smart move by CBN.
Boosting clientele for retail/commercial banks.
If you are a dummy,this is the meaning of what I said;
If you take 5m cash to go purchase from your customer/supplier in balogun market,he will decline that you should do a transfer instead since he won't want to pay 3% of 2million as charge, that is if he runs a business account or 3% of 4.5m for savings account.
Then the 5m naira cash holder will be forced to go open an account of his/her own and do a transfer instead.
Multiply this by the total number of people like him or her and see the large number of people that will be brought into the banking dragnet with just a single policy grin
No one cares about the risk in carrying cash, they just want you to use a bank ffs so they can secure more customers grin

You cannot force loyalty. Rather than open bank accounts, people will keep cash at home.
If someone comes to buy something with 5m and you refuse, the guy next door will collect the cash and sell to him.

How exactly are they discouraging cashless transaction?

Good one, most Nigerians have resistance to changes or new policy that does not provide instant benefits.

This should be the third time the government is try to implement the policy fully and to now imagine that those whose daily cash transaction is not up to 100K are making the loudest noise and complaint is appalling.
If the policy was good, Nigerians would have embraced it.

Nigerians didn't need government policy to embrace mobile phones, they embraced it because it was good.

Nigerians banks are horrible and over charge for their shitty services.

Emefiele is beginning to sound like a dunce...
1) There are some fishes that are not found in Nigeria and the only way to get it is by importing (Stock fish used in Nigeria is found in a village in Norway)
2) Rather than focus on solving the problem the right way, Emefiele and Buhari are trying to "order" a solution.

If after buying something outside the country, paying for shipping and import duty I can still sell my product cheaper than my competitor who produces in Nigeria, then the problem is not my importation, it's the cost of doing business in Nigeria that is the problem and that's what should be tackled.

The best way to end importation is not by closing the borders, it's by making doing business in Nigeria easier and cheaper.

Politics / Re: The Rice Ban: The Conspiracy You Need To Know About It! by AZeD1(m): 8:18pm On Sep 14, 2019
Blue3k:

I dont know I never looked into it. I know Nigeria could have cheaper meats if the allowed imports. I think Ratello consider annother conspiracy. The government banned pork and beef imports but allows frozen fish imports. If we had cheap alternative to Nigerians would simply eat USDA American beef and pork. It's just protectionism running a mock.

Its funny they seem to understand productivity issue I drone on about when it comes to beef production. Its the reason they're bent on doing ruga/NLTP. The ban didnt make herdsmen more productive it just makes meat more expensive.
Lots of Nigerians have no clue about economics so when a government in power says we are banning xzy to increase local production, we hail the government.

Since 1999, successive governments have talked about diversifying Nigeria's economy but none of them have shown they have a clue about what they are talking about.

To diversify the economy, you need to increase the spending power of your citizens and no I am not talking about increasing salaries.
Nigerians spend a large percentage of their wages on food and then when you factor in the cost of housing for the population, you realize that there's nothing left to spend on other things which means you can't diversify the economy.

The myth that banning rice and other foodstuff is good for Nigeria is busted the moment you look at cement, Yam and poultry.

Nigeria is the largest producer of yam in world but ask anyone on the street and they will tell you yams are expensive.

Same thing with cement. Obj banned the importation of cement and made Dangote a billionaire but the average Nigerian did not benefit from it. Cement is way cheaper in other African countries than it is in Nigeria so the housing deficit in Nigeria is self inflicted.

The rice ban would go the way of cement... A few millionaires would rise but a larger number of people would get poorer because they'll be spending more on food and less on other things like health and education.

A sensible government would ask why it is cheaper to buy rice from Thailand, pay transportation cost, pay import duty and still be cheaper than growing it in Nigeria.

There's a reason why the free market system is currently the best in the world.
To illustrate my point:

In Ontario a 10kg bag of rice cost about $11 while the minimum wage is $12/h.
After a days work, the minimum wage worker can comfortable by a 50kg bag of rice for his family while in Nigeria, someone on minimum wage would have to spend his whole salary just to buy rice.

The best way to fight corruption in Nigeria is to make food so cheap people no longer have to worry about feeding their families.

This is becoming more funny... Rice is the most imported and smuggle foodstuff in Nigeria if am right.

Now, Fg is making attempt to reduce our reliance of foreign rice coming through port and border.. Are you not aware this will surely motivate farmers here to improve on rice production... it will also make positive our country trade balance (Reduce import and if there is sufficiency of rice production here , we can as well export)

I know a few people going through the process. To begin with a claiment gets a work permit for those 3 years, and children would have access to free schooling and healthcare. For those 3 years, any person who has sense can find a way to stay. So maybe marry someone and give them belle. If Canada rejects their claim for example, they can appeal on compassionate grounds; saying it'd be punishment to separate a man from his pikin and wife. With a 3 year span to brainstorm, a true hustler can find a way to legalize themselves. And after the appeal, it can even take a year plus to hear the appeal; further giving a person more time to hustle the system. I know a few who have got papers this route.
It's why I said 7 /10 do not make it.

For those who get though this route, there's a hidden trap which is you cannot visit Nigeria until you get a Canadian passport.

Also worth noting with elections this year, immigration is a big topic hence the crack down.

7 out of 10 asylum cases from Nigerians are denied. It doesn't matter if you claim homosexuality, Bokoharam or domestic violence.
If someone tells you they know people who have done it, do not believe them, there's a 3 year backlog for asylum cases.

It’s an in-house/informal advisory committee made up of his very close advisers and kitchen cabinet members. It’s very normal in every presidency. The president is not a super human who will personally know all the 43 minister designates that were nominated by state governors and party leaders. You don’t expect only him to singlehandly review their resumes and assign portfolios to them arbitrarily.

What is most important is that portfolios should be assigned based on competency, loyalty to the country and good understanding of the next level policy of the administration.
If the president is just deciding the portfolios of the ministers, what exactly was the criteria used to pick them?

Huh?

I really wasnt expecting this kind of question even if were just for the sake of arguments. Go back and re-read my post and you may also want to read any available articles or economic materials which explain generally how job creation works. Maybe if you will do that, you will probably then understand that when for instance University X is sited at a community and is said to create say 5000 jobs, it doesn't necessarily mean University X directly employed 5000 people.
The Minister said for every aircraft.......

I am not arguing about the indirect jobs but the direct jobs as claimed by the minister.

Do you realise you're actually veering totally off point?... This is what happens when people just speak/nag out of emotions and prejudices.

A quick reminder to what my comment was about... the man said a single aeroplane in the aviation sector can translate to up to 300 jobs and he is totally right about that; end of discussion!

Whether AMCON owns Arik or Arik owns AMCON, or whether the man failed in a attempt to start an airline, or whether urchins should be at airports or not, all that is totally irrelevant to the correctness of his statement that a single aircraft can create employment for up to 300 persons, both directly and indirectly.

Regarding the launch of a national carrier, I read in that statement that the plan is for it to be totally driven by the private sector; and that is a very very good idea whether you agree or not. The previous plan where govt was to have substantial stakes was shelved, that explains the current suspension of the Nigeria Air idea.

Finally you said the essence of business is to make profit, not to create employment. May I remind you that the person being screened was being interviewed for a govt position. Just in case you do not know, or have forgotten, it is the business of government to care about whether people are employed or not.
Are you saying for every new aircraft Air Peace buys, they employ at least 300 people?

Arik air as an example has less than 20 functional planes but employs over 1500 direct staff. When you factor in the indirect staff, and the indirect-indirect staff (e.g. those urchins at the airport stand that rush to help you with your bags when you get to airports, the caterers that prepare the snacks you get on flights etc), you will be shocked at the sheer number of mouths that are being fed by the mere existence of Arik air.

Sometimes people ought to exercise restraint in the way they rush to insult people because more often than not, you may just risk sounding more clueless than the people you insult.
How efficient is Arik?
Are those urchins supposed to be there?
How many airlines have died in Nigeria because of mismanagement?

Nobody starts a business to create jobs, people start business to make profits. The jobs created are a side effect.

For a country that spends over 70% of its budget on recurrent expenditure, no government official should be talking of starting a new venture unless it's profitable.

PS: you do know Arik was taken over by AMCON right?
PS: Have you asked yourself why this same minister went to Bahrain just to design a freaking logo? How come he didn't think of jobs it would create in Nigeria?

Buhari and his clueless people..

The airplane is not made in Nigeria, it would not be serviced in Nigeria, so how would one airplane produce 300 direct jobs?

4Pilots , 10 crew members and let's be generous and give him, another 30 support people, we are still not at 50 so where did he get 300 from?
