chronique: Here we go again. Some people are asking why premium times had to publish the report; I hope you all understand that tax payers money would be used in funding this operation and at a time when our economy is in a comatose state, this is the least we need. Secondly, you can't guarantee the time it would take to get Jammeh out and if it lingers on, it would become a drain on our meagre funds which isn't available for development. We can't go borrowing for funds to beef up the budget and still spend from that funds to go fund military operations outside our shores. The US can't deploy troops outside its borders secretly without the Americans knowing... I'd like to know how many people knew of the troops deployed for the Osama Bin Laden job. |

Lagos State Criminal Law Section 134 Any person who: (1) wilfully and without lawful excuse does any indecent act in any public place; or (2) wilfully does any indecent act in any place with intent to insult or offend any person; is guilty of a misdemeanour, and is liable to imprisonment for two years. Section 136 Any person who commits any act of gross indecency with another person in public, or procures another person to commit any act of gross indecency in public with him or another person is guilty of a felony, and is liable to imprisonment for three years. We have a right to interfere, he has broken the law and he should thank his God that he was released with a warning. |

Ovamboland: Not all investment is about profit and declaring yearly dividend. Strategic thinking will help you identify industry that is must have. A country that depends on others for all its steel, energy and ammunition is not really independent Metal can be 3D printed but you want the government to spend money on a 30+ year relic? Seriously? Maybe the government can get into phone manufacturing by making the 3310. |

Ovamboland: is it true that since the first child in a family already learnt to talk then the second and third children need not learn?
The China you depend on today for cheap steel what if they followed your idea and decided not to make steel because America and Europe was already making it. Will the world be better or worse for it? If we don't make steel what else do we want to make to dominate the world and lead better lives?
If China won't buy our oil is anyone stopping us from learning to do with our crude what China does with it and sell to the world? China entered the steel market in the 70's if not earlier. Then there was no internet, trade wasn't this liberal, no smartphones or 3D printing. If you want to build a car today you wouldn't start from the carriage, neither would you build a Pentium one computer because you want to start producing computers. Nigeria missed the industrial Revolution, we should not miss the tech revolution because we were trying to get into the forgone past. Never reinvent the wheel rather stand on the shoulders of giants. |

4Play: If there was a business case to produce steel in Nigeria, the private sector would have invested in this already. If the private sector don't see such a venture as viable, what makes you think our government possesses the expertise to invest wisely in this project? This country is 57 years old this year: can you name one single government run/funded business venture that has proved profitable - NITEL, Nigeria Airways, NEPA, the refineries, e.t.c.
The staggering thing about discussion with Nigerians is the triumph hope over evidence. No matter the weight of contradictory evidence, Nigerians continue to invest futile hope on government officials. One bottle for you. You can now 3D print steel yet people are making a case for reviving a 30 year obsolete plant with outdated technology. |
Politics › Re: FG Allocates 4.3bn For Revival Of Ajaokuta Steel Company by AZeD1(m): 1:43pm On Jan 09, 2017 |
Nalikedis: why compete with anybody sef? We are talking about producing our own steel for own roads rail machinery instead of shipping scarce money to china and ukraine for imported steel. If China is producing cheap steel why cant we produce our own cheap steel? Meanwhile most of our imported steel billets are imported from ukraine and not china. China glut is in reference to the US... Not to the world in General...thanks to Havard economists that believe US should close down their coal mine and steel plant because china is shipping in cheap steel... All this will likely reduce under Trump. Countries like india, Ukraine and russia are not complaiing about china glut We don't have an unlimited source of money to buy Nigerian steel at any price. Ps: the steel glut is not only in the US, its all over the world. |
Politics › Re: FG Allocates 4.3bn For Revival Of Ajaokuta Steel Company by AZeD1(m): 1:04pm On Jan 09, 2017 |
Nalikedis: The main reason Ajaokuta has never worked was because the main blast furnace has never being fired. I think a more disciplined leadership with a resolve can get it to work. Companies like Aladja and Osogbo that were supposed to be subsediaries had worked and stop working because the Ajaokuta blast furnace that was suppose to be the Heart refuse to work. Steel making is not rocket science...infact we can build another blast furnace from the scratch and a designated power grid. Any amount spent to make "succesfully" make it work...will be peanuts compared to trillions that will be shipped out to import steel for our bridges, roads, buikdings, rail and refineries There's a glut of Chinese steel in the market, steel mills are closing in Europe because they can't compete. I'm not against reviving Ajaokuta, i am against using government money. If any company in the world can successfully revive it, let them have it for free. |
Politics › Re: FG Allocates 4.3bn For Revival Of Ajaokuta Steel Company by AZeD1(m): 11:56am On Jan 09, 2017 |
vodutive: You need to understand the difference between how a govt makes decisions and how a business makes decisions.
A business makes decisions solely of the basis of costs and profit but a government makes decisions based on the greater good. The jobs it will create, capacity building, social welfare etc I can go on and on.
In any advanced country, the number 1 priority is jobs, nit just jobs for jobs sake but quality jobs and until Nigerian understand that and protect local jobs in every policy decidion they make we will never make way as a country.
Forget GDP, forget currency, JOBS is the most important metric in any economy. People without jobs cannot pay taxes or purchase goods from other industries and the better the quality of jobs the more your people have to spend. Successful countries know this and protect local jobs fiercly!!!! The money quoted here cannot get Ajaokuta to a working state, so it's scarce resources down the drain. The government should give Ajaokuta out for free to the original builders. |

. vodutive: We talk about building infrastructure, building railways....do you know how much steel is used in buildings, bridges etc? do you know how much steel that is required if we were to really build rail across the length and breath of Nigeria over the next few decades? But guess where it is coming from...China and guess who will have jobs...Chinese citizens aand in all of these you will be using your scare foreign exchange for something you have the capacity to produce locally and your people are unemployed?
This is the real problem with Nigerians...we don't think. It is better to pay more to use Nigerian steel to build our rail lines, our bridges and put our people in work and conserve our forex than to save a few bob importing cheaper steel. It's penny wise pound foolish!!! If people can't understand this, I give up. The real problem with Nigeria is thinking Nigerians thinking we can produce everything. As of today, the Ajaokuta steel complex that has never worked is 30 years outdated. Spending money on it is stupid. The world is interconnected so anyone making reference to the industrial Revolution is simply out of date. Let's say we want to compete with the Chinese on steel and in return they decide not to buy our Oil, what happens then? The year is 2017 not 1930. |

vodutive: At least if you start with an inefficient steel industry you can kickstart other industries and maybe your steel industry can crow large enough to install more efficient plants but one thing is for sure and this you can be sure of ......you cannot catch if you are not even in the race and you will never be in the race if you import. No you cannot kick-start other industries because nobody would buy your steel. Nigeria should be moving towards our competitive strengths not trying to capture the lost decades. We should be spending any spare money on our power infrastructure and not on reviving dead steel mills. Anybody who wants to open a steel mill is free to do so but government money should not be used. PS: Tata is about to sell it's steel mill in the UK because it makes no business sense and that is in a country with light, and transport infrastructure. What chances does Ajaokuta have? |

This is 2017, if you start with an inefficient technology, you will never catch up. There's no point spending scarce resources on a dead plant. The government should give for free the plant to the original builders and use this money for more important things. |

There are also questions about why President Buhari wants to spend heavily on transmission when several power plants built by his predecessors — especially the ones built by President Olusegun Obasanjo — are deteriorating due to their idleness. This part here ruined the whole report for me. Any true insider knows that we have a transmission capacity of 5000MW, so there's no way those power plants won't be idling away even if the supposed money was spent fixing the power plants. Also any true insider would know that the current energy loss due to the inefficient transmission network is high and a constant source of conflict between the Genco, the transmission company and discos. |
