The Former Governor of Lagos State, Sen. Bola Tinubu, said as the country marks this year’s Democracy Day, the spirit of June 12 would expand to become the spirit of Nigeria and national greatness of their dreams.

Tinubu, the Candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2023 general election, made this known in a statement signed by his media aide, Mr Tunde Rahman, in Lagos on Saturday, June 11.

The Federal Government had declared Monday as a public holiday to mark the event.

June 12 was declared democracy day by the present administration to celebrate Chief MKO Abiola’s victory in the presidential election of June 12, 1993.

Tinubu prayed that Nigerians from all walks of life and all parts of the country should unite to build a more industrious and peaceful society such that all Nigerians might enjoy a greater future.

The presidential candidate said this occasion also compels Nigerians to again thank President Muhammadu Buhari for his successful efforts to name June 12 as Democracy Day for their beloved republic.

The former governor said on this Democracy Day, he will dedicate himself and his upcoming campaign to the spirit of June 12 and what it best symbolises for today’s Nigeria.

Tinubu said: “Just like democracy finally won against dictatorship, I know that prosperity shall overcome poverty, peace shall outlast violence, compassion will conquer hatred and good will defeat evil.

“Justice, security, and economic development will visit and reside in every hamlet, household, village, and city in our nation.

Agbaro, a populated town in Ughelli North LGA in Delta state would have been thrown into mourning if not for the heroic display of a tanker driver, Ejiro Otarigho.

I am not ready to bore you with the details of what you must have read in the news on Saturday. There are many Ejiros that deserved national awards and recognition.

Imagine a situation where he would have panicked and run for his life at the expense of others while the petrol tanker laden with full fuel would have exploded.

Knowing the tragedy this would have cause, Otarigho manned up and drove the burning truck out of the populated area which still took some kilometers to an open field.

Watching a clip on how this hero drove the truck that left fire on the road to that location still leave many by suprise.

On sighting the fire and how it continued to spill on the road, many had flee to nearby safe places. Even vehicle owners left their belongings and cleared the road for him.

This is indeed a real superman behavour that Marvel Film will wonder how it played out.

Safety procedures needed on Nigerian tankers
The issue of safety in an ordinary car is not even underemphasized not to talk of a truck carrying a full tank of fuel.

It is expected by the relevant agencies to carry out investigations. This is will help unravel what might likely cause the fire and know if the truck meets the requirement.

This is not to go hard on tanker drivers on owners, but for security of lives and properties. It is not all the drivers that would have such a high level of confidence displayed by Ejiro, but issue of safety should not be compromised.

Many drivers are expected to take a cue from this. Ejiro must have been rained and retrained on how to handle this kind of situation.

It therefore important for tanker companies to train and retrain their drivers on safety.

Ejiro Otarigho deserves a presidential honour
Nigerians have witnessed many being given state and presidential honour to people who have in one way or the order made positive impacts in their society. It is high time more is done to honour people like Ejiro. It is necessary for who took the risk and put their lives on the line first for others.

On Saturday, June 11, Nigerian celebrities were at the Youth Vote Count Mega Concert at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) to inform, entertain and empower youths of the nation ahead of the 2023 general election.

The event tagged, ‘Youth Vote Count 2.0 Mega concert’, is geared toward creating awareness of the need for youths to register and vote in the forthcoming 2023 general election.

The concert attracted a mammoth crowd which assembled at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos.

Organizers of the event include the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Yiaga Africa, and the European Union.

Aside from the enlightenment segment about the acquisition of a Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC); Nigerian entertainers were at the Tafawa Balewa Square to perform and give the concert-goers an awesome time.

Videos from the concert have been making the rounds across social media. Numerous Nigerian celebrities such as Waje, Kizz Daniel, Teni, Falz, 2Face Idibia, Mr Macaroni, to name a few.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, says the outcome of Tuesday’s convention of the party will determine its electoral victory in 2023.

Adamu gave the warning in his remarks at the opening of the APC National Convention at the Eagle Square on Tuesday in Abuja.

He equally warned that the party must reconcile all aggrieved members across the country so as to ensure electoral victory for the party in the forthcoming general elections in 2023.

Adamu also urged members of the APC to put their house in order if the party must survive beyond 2023, saying the party is supreme to individual or group interests.

According to him, the election of the party’s presidential aspirant should not be based on primordial sentiments.

He, therefore, stressed the need for unity, understanding, and display of re-conciliatory spirit among all members of the party.

The chairman warned against electing aspirants based on primordial sentiments.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Convention Election Management Committee, who is also the Governor of Kebbi, Sen. Atiku Bagudu, said 23 aspirants would be participating in the party’s primary election.

He stated that only three delegates elected from the 774 Local Government Areas of the country would be allowed to vote in the party’s primary election in line with the nation’s 2022 Amended Electoral Act.

The subject of Okada ban in Lagos State is not new, but there are other critical aspects that we have to look at.

Nigerians, especially most Lagos residents are used to this means of transportation. This is because they can easily navigate traffic and get to their destinations on time or ahead of time.

The Lagos State government recently enacted a transport law that banned Okada from the major highways and some routes in the state. But has the implementation been effective? The answer is no.

You still go on the highways to see okada riders going about their business without fear of any police or enforcement officers.

To make matters worse, they even operate plying the BRT lanes in some part of the state. They have this field day after they had reportedly bribed the Police and other traffic officers.

The matter became worsr after the killing of a young man by some okada riders in Lekki over a N100 change.

Lagos State government unveil Lag Ride
Meanwhile, the Lagos State government have unveiled an alternative means of transport known as Lag Ride.

As people continue to face traffic challenges in the state, the state government had come up with this initiatives with the aim of ameliorating the challenges.

Since the waterways is also at work, many would be encouraged to use such means of transport as they also await the rail system that would soon kick off.

But has the due diligence been done about all these? These are questions left unanswered.

President Muhammadu Buhari met behind closed doors with Northern governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House, Abuja, on Monday, June 6.

Speaking to State House correspondents on the outcome of the meeting, the Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum and governor of Plateau, Mr Simon Lalong, said the president insisted that he had not endorsed any of the 23 candidates aspiring to clinch the presidential ticket of the APC.

He said Buhari confirmed to them that, contrary to insinuations in some quarters, he had not endorsed any of the 23 candidates, ahead of the party’s primary election on Tuesday.

He said: “President Buhari told us that for the APC presidential primaries, he has no anointed candidate and therefore directed that the Progressive Governors’ Forum meet with the National Working Committee of the party to agree and proffer further solutions and recommendations for his successor.


“And based on his directive, the Chairman of Progressive Governors’ Forum has summoned a meeting for 5.00p.m, today, after which we will make further suggestions to the president.”

Lalong added that the governors were at the Presidential Villa to apologise to the president, because they met at the weekend and took a position to support the power shift to the Southern part of the country in the spirit of fairness but before they could convey their position to him, the matter got leaked.

Gov. Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi, who also spoke at the event, said the northern governors believed their support for “power shift to the South is good for the unity of the nation, fairness, and justice.

A Catholic Church in Ondo State has reportedly been attacked by Fulani herdsmen.

According to reports gathered, the invasion happened at St Francis Catholic Church; a worship center in Owa-luwa Street; in Owo town, Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State capital on Sunday, June 5.

It was gathered that some worshippers were feared killed as a result of the incident. The explosion, reportedly occurred on the church premises while the mass was going on Sunday, June 5.

A source said the incident caused pandemonium in the area as residents in the neighborhood of the church ran for safety.

Another source said it was some herdsmen that allegedly attacked the church and killed worshippers.

The Northern governors under the All Progressives Congress (APC) urged President Muhammadu Buhari to consider a Southerner as his likely successor in 2023.

Following a meeting on Saturday, the governors released a statement to that effect.

Eleven northern governors signed a declaration urging presidential candidates in the region to withdraw in the national interest.

Buhari recently urged APC governors to give him the authority to choose his successor.

He claimed that because governors choose their successors, he should be entitled to do the same at the national level.

“After careful deliberation, we wish to state our firm conviction that after eight years in office of President Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the APC for the 2023 elections should be one of our teeming members from the southern states of Nigeria.

As the All Progressives Congress (APC) prepares for the National Congress, the declaration of President Muhammadu Buhari for southern presidency in 2023 have massive weight. One of those that this will favour is former Lagos Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

As usual, there is expected to be some permutations as candidates continue to gather support of candidates.

Having toured the country for the support of governors who will in turn guide the delegates, Tinubu might have a landslide.

It could also be a formality for a consensus candidacy as the APC had already admitted that its a possibility.

Meanwhile, many of the candidates are also expected to withdraw from the race by announcing tomorrow on the convention ground.

Is this the time for Tinubu?
Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State has been known to be a thoroughbred politician and strategist. Having created a footprint for Lagos and survived the pressure from the Federal Government during his tenure and afterwards, Tinubu is not one to be shoved aside.

Apart from that, he has been a leader that has groomed so many leaders today that have occupied so many high seats both in the private sector and government.

It can now be said that it is time for those he has raised to come to help get him the party tickets.

So, it can be said that Tinubu declared for the Presidency at the right time. Now that the President had expressed support for a southerner, the first hurdle is crossed.

But another angle to this is that no one from the southeast have been able to get to the seat democratically.

But politics being a game of number is not helping the southeast this time around. They also have problem of unity whereby they can push a candidate to get the mandate. Only Peter Obi has been doing this arguably on his own.

Although, the region has the likes of Ebonyi Governor, Dave Umahi, former Education Minister of State, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, and his Technology counterpart, Christopher Onu, but can they stop Tinubu?

It’s a doubt.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has barred officials from making or receiving calls during the collation of results.

This was contained in the 36-page new guidelines ahead of the 2023 general elections released on Friday, June 3.

The regulation, also obtained in the 2019 version of the guidelines, is aimed at ensuring that its officials remain focused on their assignments.

To accommodate the provisions of the 2022 Electoral Act, the guidelines expanded from addressing merely 52 points to 106.

“COVID-19 restrictions have been relaxed,” INEC in its schedule attached to the newly released guidelines, but it insisted that “each vehicle deployed to convey election staff shall carry only 50 per cent of its normal passenger capacity” as all passengers must wear nose masks.

The INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, at the presentation of the guidelines during the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security meeting in Abuja, said the commission had officially ended its formal preparations for the forthcoming general elections.

“On several occasions, the Commission has assured Nigerians that we are finalising the Regulations and Guidelines for the elections. I am glad to announce that the document is ready and will be presented to Nigerians shortly. The soft copy will be uploaded to our website with the link shared on our social media platforms.

“With the release of the Regulations and Guidelines today, and the publication of the Strategic Plan (SP) 2022-2026 and Election Project Plan 2023 earlier, the Commission has virtually concluded the planning processes for the 2023 General Election nine months ahead of the election. In the next couple of weeks, the training manual will also be presented to Nigerians,” he said.

The Chief Whip of the Senate, Sen. Orji Kalu, says money cannot buy Nigeria’s president.

Orji Kalu, in a statement he issued on Thursday, June 2, in Abuja, said that it was only cohesion and consensus among the regions that could produce a president.

According to him, if you throw in money, the majority of the electorate will collect the money but still vote according to their conscience.

“The earliest Nigerians and presidential aspirants understand that no amount of money can buy the president of the country, the better for everyone.

“If money can buy the office of the president of Nigeria, late MKO Abiola could have bought it with extra change. If money can buy the president, former President Goodluck Jonathan could have bought the presidential seat in 2015,” Orji Kalu said.

He, however, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to consider picking Ahmad Lawan as a consensus candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Orji Kalu described Lawan as having the potential to stabilise and secure Nigeria.

“I urge President Muhammadu Buhari to consider giving Nigeria a man who can give the entire country a sense of belonging; fix our economy, secure all parts of the country, take education very seriously and protect his legacy.

Guard your heart
Proverb 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” When you guard your heart, you will be restricting negative thoughts from penetrating it. Hollywood actor Johnny Depp has won his defamation case against his former wife and actress, Amber Heard and the jury awarded him $15million.

Specifically, $10million in compensatory damages and $5million in punitive damages.

The panel of seven in Fairfax decided to award the Pirates of the Caribbean star a total of $15 million in damages after deliberating for about 13 hours.

The judge, however, reduced the $5million punitive damages he could receive to $350,000 because Virginia law caps punitive damages in these cases at $350k.

Amber now owes Johnny Depp $8,350,000.

Depp was not in court for the ruling as he was in the UK on tour with guitar legend Jeff Beck.

However, Amber Heard was in court.

Heard was awarded $2million in compensatory damages out of the $100million she was seeking in her countersuit against her ex-husband. She was awarded zero dollars in punitive damages.

President Muhammadu Buhari revealed his criteria for the All Progressives Congress’s ideal presidential candidate in the 2023 elections on Tuesday, May 31.

The president made the announcement in Abuja at a meeting with APC governors.

“Our objective must be the victory of our party and our choice of candidate must be someone who would give the Nigerian masses a sense of victory and confidence even before the elections,” President Buhari said, as quoted in a statement signed by presidential spokesperson Femi Adesina.

On Monday, the APC began screening its presidential candidates.

Between June 6 and 8, a convention is expected to be held, with the candidate chosen from a field of roughly 23 candidates.

The President told the Governors during their meeting on Tuesday that they must guarantee that the party chooses a presidential candidate who reflects the APC’s principles and qualities.

“The processes for the 2023 General Elections have commenced in earnest and I note that the most successful political parties globally have always relied on their internal cohesion and a strong leadership brand to achieve bigger electoral fortunes,” Buhari said.

“Our party, the APC, shall not be any different, more so as we are still implementing the blueprint for a more prosperous nation.

“As I begin the final year of my second term as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and leader of the party, I recognize the compelling need for me to provide stronger leadership to the party under this transition process and to ensure that it happens in an orderly manner.

“Such leadership is required so that the party remains strong and united. It is also needed to improve our electoral fortunes by ensuring that it retains power at the center, hold the great majority in various legislative chambers and also gain additional number of states.

Kalu Ikeagwu, a popular Nigerian actor on Monday, May 30 informed the Ikeja High Court how his estranged wife, Ijeoma, allegedly deserted their matrimonial home and prevented him from gaining access to their two children, News Round The Clock gathered.

Kalu Ikeagwu, in the suit marked LD/8939HD/2021, is seeking a dissolution of his six-year-old marriage to Ijeoma, according to People’s Gazette.

The actor also seeks full custody of his three-year-old son and ten-year-old stepdaughter.

Under cross-examination by the respondent’s counsel, S.I. Amedu, Ikeagwu said his wife packed out of his matrimonial and sent him a mail that she was going to her father’s house in Enugu.

Ikeagwu also denied that he sent his wife and kids out of the house and failed to provide for their upkeep.

The actor further told the court that his wife denied him sx and poured water on him while he was asleep. “After the birth of our son, she has refused to have sx with me. I was not aware she lost the pregnancy due to an infection as I did not give her any infection. Till date, I have not seen any report attached to a document that she lost a baby through STD. Though I did not ask her why she lost the baby,” he said.

Ikeagwu said he stopped sending money to the children for upkeep and maintenance because his wife denied him being the father to his stepdaughter.

A Federal High Court, Abuja has fixed Tuesday, May 30, to hear the bail application filed by Sen. Rochas Okorocha.

Justice Inyang Ekwo fixed the date after counsel for Okorocha, Okey Amaechi, SAN, told the court that a bail application had been filed on behalf of his client, following his non-guilty plea.

The senator’s bail request is expected to be taken alongside his co-defendant, Anyim Nyerere Chinenye’s bail plea, who also filed the motion through his lawyer, Darlington Onwunzurumba.

After the matter was called, counsel for the EFCC, Gbolahan Latona, informed that a 17-count charge, dated Jan. 24 and filed Jan. 31, was before the court.

He prayed the court for the counts to be read to the defendants so they could take their plea.

Okorocha is the current senator representing Imo West Senatorial District.

The lawmaker, who is the 1st defendant, was arraigned alongside Chinenye, Naphtali International Limited, Perfect Finish Multi Projects Limited, Consolid Projects Consulting Limited, Pramif International Limited, and Legend World Concepts Limited as 2nd to 7th defendants respectively.

He was alleged to have laundered funds to the tune of N2.9 billion while serving as governor of Imo.

Shortly after the counts were read to the duo, Okorocha and Chinenye pleaded not guilty.

Justice Ekwo also entered a non-guilty plea for 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th defendants, which are companies allegedly used in committing the offence, after Onwunzurumba, who held the brief of Oba Maduabuchi, SAN, did not oppose it.

Latona, who asked for a trial date, told the court that the majority of their witnesses were outside jurisdiction due to the peculiarity of the case.

The judge then adjourned the matter until Nov. 7, Nov. 8, Nov. 9, Nov. 10 and Nov. 11 for trial commencement.

But Amaechi, who was Okorocha’s lawyer, told the court that considering the adjourned dates, they planned to filed an application challenging the competence of the charge.

Born on October 9, 1994 in Ikorodu, Lagos, Oshoala had her primary education at Air Force Primary School, Victoria Island. Thereafter, she had her secondary education in Aunty Ayo International School, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Career

She started her football career at Nigerian Lower Division side, FC Robo, where she played from 2009 to 2013. Then, she moved to Rivers Angels where she gained more recognition.

She made her first national team appearance at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada. At the tournament, she scored the highest goals and was named the Player of the Tournament.

She joined the senior national team at the 2014 African Women’s Championship. She became the tournament’s best player and second top goal scorer. On January 23, 2015, Oshoala joined Liverpool in England Women’s Super League. She later became the first player from an African nation to compete in the top women’s league in England.

In March 2016, Oshoala signed with Arsenal and helped her team to win the 2016 FA Women’s Cup. On February 10, 2017, she joined Chinese club, Dailan, and was instrumental in their league win that season. Hence, she won the league’s Golden Boot award for being the top goal scorer.

In March 2022, Oshoala signed a new contract with Spanish club, Barcelona Femeni, till the end of the 2023-2024 season.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has slammed Rotimi Amaechi, the former Minister of Transportation, and Emeka Nwajiuba, the Minister of State for Education, for their presidential ambitions in 2023.

Wike claimed that Amaechi and Nwajiuba have no moral qualms about running for President when their ministries are mired in controversy.

The presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, spoke during a political rally in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Wike also called for more state enforcement and a reorganisation of the country.

According to Wike: “Nigerians know my views. I believe in restructuring. I believe in state police. You cannot stop insecurity in this country without state police which is the practice in all countries that run true federalism.

“Before it happens, you’ve stopped it or caged them. 42 people died in the train blast, and no concrete report until now.

“This is a country where a Minister of Transport after people died in such accident and the next day, he went and collected forms for the presidency.

“You’re a Minister of Education, schools have closed for how many months, the next thing; the minister went and collected form for presidency. I have not seen a country like this, no conscience.”

American actor and movie producer Kevin Spacey has been charged with four counts of sexual assault in the United Kingdom.

The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed on Thursday, May 26 that the offenses involved three men.

Spacey, 62, was charged after evidence was reviewed following complaints between 2005 and 2013.

Rosemary Ainslie, CPS Special Crime Division Head said the Service “authorized criminal charges for four counts of sexual assault against three men”.

In a release, she disclosed Spacey has been charged with “causing a person to engage in penetrative s3xual activity without consent”.

Ainslie announced that the evidence earlier gathered was rechecked by the Metropolitan Police.

“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr. Spacey are active and that he has the right to a fair trial”, the statement reads.

The incidents are alleged to have taken place in London and Gloucestershire.

Equally, the first charge was about an alleged sexual assault in London in March 2005.

The second alleged victim claimed to have been assaulted in London in August 2008.

Kris Jenner has admonished her 26-year-old daughter Kendall Jenner to have a baby or to freeze her eggs if she isn’t ready.

Kendall, a member of the Kardashian-Jenner family, is the only one out of Kris Jenner’s six children who is yet to give birth.

In the latest episode of The Kardashians, Kris, 66, sat Kendall down for a conversation about childbirth.

She told Kendall it was “time to have a baby”.

Kendall responded that she wasn’t sure if she was ready.

Kris said: “I was just thinking maybe it’s time to, you know, have a baby.“

Kendall tells her mother: “You keep telling me ‘you’re not getting any younger but guess what mom? It’s my life.”

The Supreme Court on Thursday, May 26, reserved judgment in the suit filed by President Muhammadu Buhari and Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, to void the provisions of Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Justice Musa Dattijo, who led the seven-member panel of the Justices of the Supreme court reserved judgment after counsel to all the parties adopted all their processes.

He, however, said the court will announce a date to the parties involved for judgment.

On May 19, the apex court admitted an application filed by Rivers to be joined in the suit.

The Supreme Court had allowed the joinder application that Rivers brought through the Speaker of its House of Assembly and its Attorney-General and adjourned hearing on the suit until May 26.

The applicants told the court that they were opposed to the suit marked SC/CV/504/2022, which originally had the National Assembly as the sole Respondent.

Buhari and Malami filed a suit at the Supreme Court, seeking an interpretation of Section 84(12) of the Electoral Amendment Act 2022.

They are seeking an order of the apex court to strike out the section of the Electoral Act, saying it is inconsistent with the nation’s Constitution.
