President Muhammadu Buhari has called on leaders in West Africa to do all within their powers to ensure that elections are conducted in their countries in an atmosphere of trust, freedom, and transparency.

The President’s media aide, Malam Garba Shehu, in a statement, said Buhari made the call on Tuesday, July 26, in a goodwill message to the Government and people of Liberia as he joined other world leaders on the occasion of the 175th Independence Anniversary of the West African nation.

According to the president, this is the only way the sub-region can be insulated from the scourge of unconstitutional takeovers that reared its head in three countries recently.

Buhari affirmed that democracy and good governance must take their roots on the African continent to sustain peace, stability, and development while leaders must redouble their efforts to guarantee the irreversibility of democracy.

“I would like to use the opportunity of this event to address an important issue affecting three countries in the ECOWAS region; Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.

“All the three nations have National Elections in 2023. In Nigeria, we are working towards a free, fair, transparent, credible, and acceptable outcome of elections and their results.

”It is important and necessary for all our countries to key into these resolves as they are indispensable to peace and stability in our countries and sub-region.

”The deepening of democracy and good governance are essential antidotes to check-mate unconstitutional change of governments as we sadly witnessed within the last three years in three countries within our sub-region.

”We must strengthen our efforts to guarantee the irreversibility of democracy in our sub-region and Africa,” he said.

Buhari commended his Liberian counterpart, Dr George Weah, for his demonstration of love for the country and the pursuit of peace, unity, and progress, as evidenced by people-oriented projects executed with the sole purpose of taking the country to greater heights within the limited resources available.

The Federal Government is said to be considering banning the use of motorcycles and mining activities, citing banditry. This is coming after the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, gave the hint on Thursday while briefing reporters.

He said motorcycles were the major means of transportation for bandits. When asked how the decision may affect the ordinary man he said national interest would be placed above individual interest. 1. Locals are the true victims
Although the ban may seek to curtail terrorist activities, ordinary citizens are those who will be affected the most. It seems as though no one is looking out for them.

2. Poverty
Motorcycles are a major means of transportation for the bandits and the downtrodden alike. If banned, that could mean even more economic strife for the communities, further heightening insecurity. Who is Tobi Amusan?
She is Africa’s reigning Track & Field queen, born on April 23, 1997. She won the 2022 Diamond League event in Paris in 12.41s, setting an African record.

Also, she won gold in the 100m hurdles and 4×100m race at the 2022 African Championships in Mauritius. In 2021, she won the Diamond League Trophy in Zurich in the 100m hurdles in 12.42s. This win made her to become the first Nigerian to win a Diamond League trophy.

She was a champion at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. At the 2013 African Youth Championships in Warri, Delta State, she bagged a silver medal.

At the 2015 African Junior Athletics Championships in Addis Ababa, she won gold in the 100m hurdles. In 2015, she made her debut at the All-Africa Games where she won the gold medal in the 100 metres hurdles.

In 2021, she finished fourth in the Tokyo Olympics with a time of 12.60s.

Eloswag has emerged as the first Head of House for the season 7 edition of the Big Brother Naija Level Up.

The announcement of the winner Head of House game was made after the Big Brother Naija Level Up housemates had their competition on Monday evening.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Monday, July 25, said that when he becomes president in 2023, he will face the nation’s security crisis head-on.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the former Anambra State governor said his solution to the problem will be “decisive and immediate”.

While stressing that the nation’s security situation has been very worrisome, Peter Obi said he feels the Federal Government should do more.

A Nigerian brand influencer known as Amanda Chisom has been arrested over her alleged participation in a N50 billion ponzi scheme executed by Marksman Chinedu Ijeoma who is also known as Chinmark.

On Thursday, July 21, Chukwudi Iwuchukwu, a lawyer published a video of Amanda Chisom arriving the office of Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja after she was arrested.

According to Iwuchukwu, the brand influencer might be detained for a long time based on court order procured by the victims of the Chinmark’s heist that she was allegedly part of.

Giving an update on her arrest, Iwuchukwu wrote;

Big Brother Naija star, Boma Akpore has recounted a life-threatening experience with COVID as he expresses appreciation to God.

In the lengthy post shared on Instagram, the former Big Brother Naija housemate said he caught COVID-19 in December 2020 which led to a terrible sinus infection that didn’t give him any relief.

Boma said he decided to see an allergist and after multiple appointments and tests, the scan result came back unpleasant with half of his right nostril blocked and was only breathing with his left nostril.

According to Boma, his only option was to undergo surgery as recommended by a doctor who said the infection had already spread to the back of his head and he could get blind or have brain damage.

He wrote:

“In 2020 December 2, I caught COVID-19 which led to me having a terrible sinus infection. Prior to then I have never had any sinus issues for more than 3 days.

“Then I got extremely busy going from One film set to another in the US, then I came to Nigeria and stayed for another 6 months due to being on big brother naija and other press duties I had to attend.

Afterwards I decided to return home to New York, all these while the sinus issue hasn’t given me any relief almost 1 year after. I decided to see an allergist and between January and March 2021, I have had multiple doctors appointments and tests which the scan results came back very unpleasant. Half of my right face/nostril was blocked and I was only breathing from my left nostril. At this stage I wake up with mucus from my right nostril every single day.

“At this point , my only option was to have surgery as recommended by my Doctor. Surgery date was set for April 12. Suddenly I booked a movie role in Nigeria and shooting stars April 8, so my team and I decided to postpone the surgery till after the shoot. While I was in Nigeria the reunion date was also set, so I killed both birds with 1 stone. As soon as the last episode was shot I took the next flight back to NYC May 7, to prepare for my surgery May 13.

“Doctor said the infection had already spread to the back of my head and I was told I could get blind or have brain damage has it was a head surgery really close to the brain and I was extremely scared. The surgery started at 6.30am and was due to be done at 12pm, but I couldn’t wake up for another 3 1/2 hours, mehnnn, everyone was scared.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) says it will on Friday, arraign the former Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Mr Ahmed Idris.

Mr Wilson Uwujaren, the Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC said this in a statement on Thursday, July 21, in Abuja

Uwujaren said the former AGF and the three others would be arraigned before Justice Adeyemi Ajayi of an FCT High Court.

He said the three others to be docked alongside the AGF over N109 billion fraud were Godfrey Akindele, Mohammed Usman and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited.

According to him, the suspects will be arraigned on a 14-count charge of stealing and criminal breach of trust to the tune of N109, 485,572,691.9.

The former AGF was arrested on May 16, by the EFCC over alleged diversion and laundering of N109 billion.

The EFCC said verified intelligence reports showed that Idris raked off the funds through bogus consultancies and other illegal activities using proxies, family members, and close associates.

The commission said the funds were laundered through real estate investments in Kano and Abuja.

It said Idris was arrested after he failed to honour invitations by the commission to respond to issues connected to the alleged fraudulent acts.

The EFCC spokesman said Count one of the charge reads: “That you, Ahmed Idris between February and December, 2021 at Abuja in the Abuja Judicial Division of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, being a public servant by virtue of your position as the Accountant General of the Federation accepted from Olusegun Akindele, a gratification in the aggregate sum of N15,136,221,921.46 ( Fifteen Billion, One Hundred and Thirty Six Million, Two Hundred and Twenty One Thousand, Nine Hundred and Twenty One Naira and Forty Six Kobo) which sum was converted to the United States Dollars by the said Olusegun Akindele and which sum did not form part of your lawful remuneration but as a motive for accelerating the payment of 13% derivation to the nine (9) oil producing Sates in the Federation, through the office of the Accountant General of the Federation, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 155 of the Penal Code Act Cap 532 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 1990 and punishable under the same section”.

According to him, the 1993 MKO Abiola-Kingibe presidential ticket and the current Tinubu-Shettima ticket, bridged one of our fault lines in the management of our diversities.

Adamu said that Nigerians overwhelmingly voted for that ticket because they trusted Abiola, a man who opened his arms to every tribe and religion in the country to run an inclusive government.

He said that Tinubu was a man who has also thrown his arms around every tribe in the country and offered his shoulders for those in pain to lean on.

On Monday night, July 18, 2022, Nigeria’s Super Falcons bowed out of the ongoing African Women’s Cup of Nations. They did fantastically well, holding their opponents, Morocco, who are also the host nation, to a penalty shootout. This was after the 90 minutes and extra time could not determine the winner of the game.

The Falcons were two women down due to red cards from the referee. Nevertheless, they held their head up high after making it up till the semi finals of the competition. Consequently, they have qualified for the Women’s World Cup in 2023.

Who is Chiamaka Nnadozie?
Nnadozie is a goal keeper with the Nigerian national team and Paris FC in the French Division 1 Feminine team.

She was born on December 8, 2000. She was a former player with Rivers Angels from 2016 till 2020 before she left for the French club.

During the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, Nnadozie played a formidable role. She joined the women’s senior team in 2019.

President Muhammadu Buhari has unveiled the new Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited), affirming that the company is mandated by law to ensure that Nigeria’s National Energy Security is guaranteed.

Speaking at the historic occasion at State House Conference Centre, on Tuesday, July 19, the President said Africa’s largest National Oil Company (NOC) would also support sustainable growth across other sectors of the economy as it delivers energy to the world.


At the event, which featured a Special rendition of the Theme Song ”Energy for today, Energy for tomorrow, Energy for Everyone’‘ by an Ensemble, the president recounted how God had used him to consistently play an important role in shaping the destiny of the country’s NOC in the last 45 years.

Buhari expressed optimism that the NNPC Limited would sustainably deliver value to its over 200 million shareholders and the global energy community; operate without relying on government funding and free from institutional regulations such as the Treasury Single Account (TSA).

‘‘This is a landmark event for the Nigerian oil industry.

‘‘Our country places a high premium on creating the right atmosphere that supports investment and growth to boost our economy and continue to play an important role in sustaining global energy requirements.

‘‘We are transforming our petroleum industry, to strengthen its capacity and market relevance for the present and future global energy priorities.

‘‘By chance of history, I was privileged to lead the creation of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation on July 1, 1977. Forty-Four (44) years later, I was again privileged to sign the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) in 2021, heralding the long-awaited reform of our petroleum sector,” he said.

Idahosa, the presiding Bishop and Senior Pastor of the God First Ministry, Lekki Light Centre, was unveiled at the International Conference Centre in Abuja on Monday.

During the event, Kwankwaso said Nigeria “is currently bleeding”, adding that the country is in need of people who can rescue it from total collapse.

He said the lack of understanding of how to govern a multi-cultural, multi-religious and multi-ethnic country like Nigeria by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has inflicted a severe wound on the country.

Kwankwaso said the choice of Idahosa as his running mate was made after careful consideration and screening of more than 20 persons.

“Ineptitude and lack of empathy have dealt a damaging blow to Nigerians, as even arrogance and sense of entitlement have further widening the fault lines in our country, and their attitudes toward the core functions of government are causing a dangerous escalation of insecurity, uncontrollable inflation, scandalous unemployment statistics, the collapse of the tertiary education system, and the general collapse of social services,” Kwankwaso said.

He added, “We live in a country where victims of insecurity are constantly being ignored while still being accused of exaggeration or lying or both.

“We live in a country where victims of unemployment are accused of laziness, where universities and other tertiary education institutions have frequently been shut down for months, and our children’s future is being jeopardised while leaders are busy throwing out hundreds of millions of Naira to purchase party forms.”

While accepting his nomination, Idahosa thanked Kwankwaso for the opportunity, saying Nigeria is at a critical moment where her unity and tenacity as a people are being tested.

The National Chairman of the NNPP, Prof. Rufai Alkali, said the team would rescue Nigeria from its present challenges.

Veteran actress, Ada Ameh, died in the late hours of Sunday, July 17, 2022. It was sad news that shocked her colleagues and fans across the nation. She was a shining light who graced our screens and brought smiles on our faces with her impressive interpretation of movie scripts.

Grief
In October 2020, Ameh lost her only child, Aladi Godgift, to death. Previously, she had lost six of her siblings and her father. She has always been open about how she got pregnant at age 13 and had to spend her teenage years being a mother. Sadly, she lost her child after a failed surgery in Abuja.

In an interview with Punch in December 2021, she said, “This is one of the most challenging periods of my life. I have lost six of my siblings, my father and then, my daughter. I know what pain is about.

“There are moments I remember her (Aladi). One cannot forget about it but it will heal gradually. One has to yield to the process; it is a two way thing. The pain is indescribable and excruciating. My late daughter and I were like sisters. With time, one would feel a lot better. It takes God’s grace and one has to encourage oneself in the Lord.”

Depression
In June 2022, she posted a video on her Instagram page saying, “Everything is going to be fine. I have an issue right now, and it is taking my life. I will not die. We will get over it.

“I was given a job but I did not do the job because I had mental issues. Will people understand when you say you have mental issues? They won’t. They are slamming me with a bill, suing me. It is okay.”

In an interview with TVC’s Your View, she spoke further about depression. She said, “I had depression, max depression. I have been depressed for some years and it worsened when I lost my daughter in 2020. We practically grew up together.”

Nigerian singer, Adekunle Gold has revealed to his fans that he is a sickle cell anemia carrier.

The 79th Element recording artiste made this known in his latest newsletter that he published on Friday, July 15.

“It feels liberating to finally be able to share this part of my life with you, to finally be able to speak my truth. When I talk about how I struggled to get to where I am today, I need you to know that my struggle was real,” he wrote.

His statement reads further;

“I was born with sickle cell disease. It was life and death, it was physical, mental, and financial, you name it and I went through it all. It was tough, painful and frustrating. I lived with a sickness no one around me understood. I lived with restrictions all my childhood.”

The father of one recounted how he was deprived of the fun parts of childhood because of the illness.

“I wasn’t able to join some of the most minor childhood play and liberating activities like going out in the rain. The times when I insisted and rebelled against my parents’ orders and went out in the rain, I would end up having a crisis,” he recounted.

“The nights were painful and lonely, nights that no one could help me get through. It was just me, God and my mind. The pains and shivers were unbearable.”

Gold also shared the harrowing nights he had a crisis and how his poor family could hardly afford to take care of his hospital bills.

“They always came in the night, when my family had no means to transport me to a hospital. We simply couldn’t afford the constant hospital bill so I had no choice but to endure the pain,” he shared.

“My mum wanted me to be well. She did her best. She took me to all the churches she could find. I’m grateful for her because she saw the future in me. A future where no illness or sickness could hold me back from my purpose, from the life I was destined to live.”

“Sickle cell disease took away my freedom, my childhood. I lost friends, a lot of them. Some didn’t understand the restrictions and rules I had to live by, some just didn’t want to deal with my illness or thought it was a nasty or contagious disease that they could catch. I was a burden for some, living with sickle cell is far from living a normal life.

The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has picked Pastor Isaac Idahosa as his running mate for the 2023 general elections

NNPP disclosed this in a post on its Twitter handle on Thursday, July 14.

Bishop Idahosa is the Senior Pastor of God First Ministry, a.k.a Illumination Assembly, with its headquarters in Lekki, Lagos State.

The announcement comes a day after the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, said the NNPP and the African Action Congress (AAC) have not submitted nominations to the portal.

He said, “So far, the Commission has processed 6,995 nomination forms (EC9) uploaded by 16 out of 18 political parties for the constituencies where they intend to sponsor candidates. However, two political parties, the African Action Congress (AAC) and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), are yet to upload a single nomination to the portal.

“The Commission hereby reminds all political parties that they have three days left to upload their list of candidates to the ICNP. The deadline is Friday 15th July 2022. The portal will automatically shut down at 6.00 pm on that date.”

Leading Afrobeat musician, David Adeleke who is better known as Davido almost got into a scuffle with some touts during his recent visit to his hometown, Osun state.

The singer who has always been a staunch supporter of his uncle, Senator Ademola Adeleke who is vying for the Governorship seat in Osun State is currently in his state of origin.

Yakubu AbdulMumuni, one of the alleged escapees of the Kuje Correctional Centre, was on Monday, July 11, arrested by the police in Ota, Ogun State.

It was gathered that the 28-year-old was arrested following information received by policemen at Sango-Ota divisional headquarters that the convict was sighted somewhere around Sango Ota.

The command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a statement on Wednesday, July 13, said, “He confessed to the police that he escaped from Kuje Correctional Center on the 5th of July 2022, when the Center was attacked by bandits.

He stated further that he was convicted by Kogi State High Court for offence of Conspiracy and culpable homicide and sent to Kuje Correctional Centre.”

Jimi Agbaje, former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, has denied reports that he has joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A report titled ‘Awolokan 2023’ began to circulate on social media platforms in the early hours of Wednesday, claiming that Jimi Agbaje has joined APC and endorsed Bola Tinubu, the APC presidential candidate.

“I’m fully back in APC to join our South-West leaders as well as progressive family and friends in Lagos State. The Awalokan 2023 is a project that both young and old in all the nooks and crannies of the Southwest should embrace. On this note, I sincerely join APC from the major opposition party to add my strength,” the statement, which was claimed to have been credited to Jimi Agbaje, reads.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has tasked the nation’s security forces and para-military agencies to remain vigilant to defeat the criminal elements terrorising the country.

Aregbesola gave the charge in a statement by his Media Adviser, Mr Sola Fasure, on Tuesday, July 12, in Abuja.

Fasure said that the minister gave the charge when he paid a surprise visit to the Kirikiri Maximum and Medium Security Custodial Centres in Kirikiri, Apapa, Lagos State.

“We must acknowledge our servicemen and security agencies, who have sacrificed a lot to make this possible.

“We must equally charge them to remain eternally vigilant and continuously evolve strategies. And to define these strategies, we have to make decisions based not on fear, but on hard-earned wisdom.

“I have also informed our officers and men here that they must fight to defend our institutions, territory and constitution. It also applies to all others wherever they are posted in Nigeria.

“The ragtag groups of opportunists must not be allowed to attack our institutions and get away with it. They must not live to tell the story.”

On the part of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Aregbesola directed that the management of the service should improve its efforts on intelligence gathering and acting on such information garnered.

This, he said, was the panacea to solving the problem of incessant custodial centres attacks.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, Governors’ Forum has applauded its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu for picking Borno Senator, Kashim Shettima as his running mate.

The forum described the Tinubu/Shettima ticket as a formidable team.
