PoliticsLagos Suspends Guidelines On Safe, Lawful Abortion, Seeks More Stakeholders’ Dis by Azeemokoya(op): 7:07pm On Jul 08, 2022
Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has directed the suspension of the state’s guidelines on safe termination of pregnancy.

Prof. Akin Abayomi, the state Commissioner for Health, made the disclosure in a statement on Thursday, July 7, in Lagos.

Abayomi noted that the guidelines had generated immense public interest which necessitated escalating it to the Governor.

He said that the governor advised further sensitisation of the public and key stakeholders to ensure a clearer understanding of the objectives of the guidelines.

“To this end, we are suspending the implementation of these guidelines in the meantime for the Executive Council to deliberate on this matter and ensure adequate public sensitisation and stakeholder engagement to reach a consensus required for a successful guideline development,” he said.

According to him, the ministry is seeking different methods to eliminate illegal abortions and ensure that a mother does not die at childbirth, thereby disrupting an entire family unit.

The Lagos commissioner said that illegal abortions and high-risk pregnancies leading to unresolvable complications rank high among the several factors that contribute to maternal mortality.

“In this regard, it became imperative to examine, in keeping with existing National and State laws and policies, if there are indeed justifications and medical reasons to offer abortion to a woman whose life is threatened by a pregnancy,” he said.

He noted that following this, the guideline was developed over four years through painstaking work by experts in Law and in Obstetrics, and Gynaecology.

Abayomi noted that the guidelines’ focus was on creating the opportunity to reduce maternal mortality in line with existing laws.

He said that the ministry remains committed to planning, devising, and implementing policies that promote qualitative, affordable, and equitable healthcare services to the citizens.

The party’s National Secretary, Mr Samuel Anyanwu, stated this on Wednesday, July 6, in Abuja.

He spoke when the party’s Special Reconciliation Committee for Osun and Lagos submitted its interim report on Osun State to the party National Working Committee (NWC).

Anyanwu said that the PDP had no doubt about winning Osun State, which according to him would be extended to Lagos and other South West states.

“On behalf of the NWC, we want to appreciate you for your time because we know how tasking this could be

“We pray that this assignment will yield fruit. By the special grace of God, Osun State is low-hanging fruit for PDP. This time around, we are going to win again.

“It will be in the history of our party that this committee devised the process of wining Osun and we are going to send you more assignments.

PoliticsSirika: Aviation Minister Says National Carrier Will Be Ready Before End Of 2022 by Azeemokoya(op): 7:42am On Jul 06, 2022
The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika says Nigeria will have a national carrier before the end of 2022.

Sirika said this at a two-day Africa Public Private Partnership Network (AP3N) Investment programme held in Abuja on Tuesday, July 5.

The programme was organised by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission with the theme, “Financing Africa’s Infrastructure through Public-Private Partnership (PPP).”

Nigeria Air is the nation’s proposed national carrier which was unveiled at the Farnborough Air Show in the United Kingdom in July 2018.

The minister, represented by Mr Akin Olateru, the Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), said the Air Transport License had been issued.

“We have a team in place, the Air Transport License has been issued by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, and we are in the process of processing the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) which will lead to the start of the airline.

“When you are setting up an airline, there are five phases for the AOC process.

“You need to bring in airplanes when you are in phase three. So in phases one and two, you do not need to bring an airplane but you need to have identified them.

”But because people do not understand the process in aviation, they see it as another business. But aviation has its peculiarities and strict guidelines in everything we do,” Sirika stated.

The panelist who discussed the topic “Transforming the Aviation Sector through Private Sector Participation” underscored the need for funding from private investment in the sector to ensure efficiency.

PoliticsINEC Bemoans Low Rate Of PVC Collection In Lagos, Voters’ Apathy by Azeemokoya(op): 8:14pm On Jun 30, 2022
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed worries over the low rate of Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) collection in Lagos State.

The State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Olusegun Agbaje, made this known at the Eighth Annual Constituency Stakeholders’ Meeting held on Thursday, June 30, in Lagos.

The meeting is organised by the Lagos State House of Assembly on the importance of PVC ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The meeting holds simultaneously in the 40 constituencies of the state.

Agbaje was represented by an INEC official, Mr Emmanuel Adegboyega, during the meeting held at the Eti-Osa II Constituency.

Agbaje said, ”The low rate of PVC collection in Lagos State is worrisome as only 6,382 PVCs out of 34,242 received from the commission’s headquarters for the first and second quarters CVR had been collected by their owners.

“This is just 18.6 per cent; similarly, for the old PVCs, a total of 1,091,157 are still uncollected by their owners.”

He urged stakeholders to properly educate and mobilise voters in line with the Electoral Act 2022 and 1999 Constitution as amended.

According to him, such is a significant area where the commission needs the positive input of all stakeholders to complement its ongoing efforts towards improving the level of awareness.

“This will no doubt increase the PVC collection rate.

“Also, avoid voter apathy that have characterised past elections in the state where only 1,156,590 out of 6,570,291 registered voters, that is, 17.6 per cent participated in the 2019 general election in the state,” the INEC official said.

LiteratureZaynab Alkali: A Feminist Icon by Azeemokoya(op): 8:35am On Jun 30, 2022
Zaynab Alkali is an acclaimed author, essayist and poet from Northern Nigeria. She was born into the Turah-Mazila family of Borno and Adamawa States in 1950.

Zaynab attended Queen Elizabeth Secondary School, Ilorin. She also attended Bayero University, which was at the time under Ahmadu Bello University.

She is often regarded as the first female novelist from Northern Nigeria. Zaynab Alkali worked at the University of Maiduguri as a lecturer for twenty-two years. Thereafter, she moved to Nassarawa State University as a professor of English. She was married to Mohammed Nur Alkali who passed away in 2014.

Her first book, “The Stillborn” was published to international acclaim. While at home, she was met with harsh criticism. She was accused of being a radical feminist, inciting women to disobey their spouses.

Consequently, the label feminist restricted her from venturing into other social issues. As such, she set out to write “The Virtuous Woman” in the hopes of pandering to her audience. However, the book did quite the opposite. Critics from Southern Nigeria and abroad said she had mellowed down.

Met with these two extremes, Zaynab decided to write a short story collection titled “The Cobwebs and Other Stories”, after ten years. This book she tried to write from her heart. She paid no heed to external opinions. Her mantra while writing it was: No writer can truly write anything while paying attention to what people are expecting from them.

Out of the seven nominees screened and confirmed by Senate, three were excused from taking questions from lawmakers.

This was because of their legislative background and experience, in line with the tradition of the Senate, while four of nominees answered questions from the lawmakers.

The nominees excused from questions at the screening were Goodluck Nana Opiah (Imo), Umar Ibrahim El-Yakub (Kano) and Ademola Adewole Adegoroye (Ondo).

Those who responded to questions included Henry Ikechukwu Ikoh (Abia) Umana Okon Umana (Akwa Ibom), Ekumankama Joseph Nkama (Ebonyi) and Odum Odi (Rivers).

On how jobs could be created for the teeming unemployed youths, Ikoh re-emphasised the need for the establishment of modular refineries, to refine the nation’s crude oil locally.

Responding to questions on how to improve the revenue and foreign exchange earnings to Nigeria, the nominee from Akwa Ibom, Umana Okon Umana, said the free trade zone was a veritable platform to improve the nation’s revenue earnings.

He advised that effort should be made to improve Nigeria’s production sector for export, which would enable the inflows of foreign exchange .
The nominee from Ebonyi, when asked how he could contribute to youth development, given his youthful age, said there was need to ensure a national re-orientation for the youths, on get-rich-quick mentality.

PoliticsMatawalle: Why We Directed Citizens To Acquire Guns by Azeemokoya(op): 8:26pm On Jun 28, 2022
Gov. Bello Matawalle of Zamfara has said that the State Government relied on an extanct legislation to direct residents to acquire weapons to defend themselves.

This is contained in a statement issued by Jamilu Magaji, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, and made available to newsmen on Tuesday, June 28.

Magaji stated that the governor made the remark while inaugurating some security committees in Gusau.

The statement explained that the governor’s directive was part of the administration’s efforts to tackle protracted security challenges in the state.

It added that the State Government was aware of the misgivings expressed in some quarters regarding the new measure.

It noted that the measure was meant “to encourage the communities suffering almost daily from the inhuman aggressions from the bandits to acquire firearms to defend their communities.

“Self-defence is a natural instinct and has always been part of human survival strategy.

“As those entrusted with the safety of lives and property of the people, we will do everything possible to uphold this responsibility within the ambit of the law.

“We are also aware that the security forces are doing their best to combat this formidable challenge.

“Their efforts are, however, hampered by the lack of adequate modern warfare equipment and the dearth of personnel.

“Our decision to mobilise people to secure their communities is, therefore, for the people to complement the efforts of the conventional security forces in dealing with banditry and fishing out informants

“The acquisition and usage of firearms by the public, who desire to do so, would be governed by the Nigeria Firearms Act,” he further stated.

The statement added that the state government had explored all options to address the issue to no avail...

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Vice Presidential candidate says only the PDP will wrestle from the All Progressives Congress in 2023 general elections.

Okowa stated this while addressing the people of Delta and party faithful who turned out enmasse to receive him at the Grand Reception organised by the State PDP on Thursday, June 23, in Asaba after his emergence as the party’s Vice Presidential candidate.

The governor, who appreciated God and thanked Nigerians for his elevation and support, said he was grateful to the Party Presidential Flagbearer, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, for selecting and nominating him as the vice presidential candidate.

According to Okowa, the Atiku/Okowa joint ticket is for victory, hope and the only ticket that will rescue power from the APC led government come 2023.

He said that the nation needed to pray, be resilient and be hopeful, adding that the process of rebuilding the country and give hope to the youth, women and indeed to Nigerians has begun.

Okowa advised youths not to be carried away by the euphoria of the time but remain committed to work with PDP for the positive change that would come.

EducationNgige Says ASUU Strike To Be Resolved Soon by Azeemokoya(op): 8:15am On Jun 23, 2022
The Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige says the Federal Government has been meeting with the Academic Union of Universities (ASUU) over its lingering strike and assured Nigerians that the dispute with the lecturers will be resolved soon.

Ngige said this on Wednesday, June 22, while briefing the press after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the State House in Abuja.

According to him, contrary to insinuations that the government was not engaging with ASUU, there have been a series of meetings between all parties, and the next one is scheduled for Thursday to resolve the face-off.

“As the issue is bordered on money, remunerations, welfare, we did another conciliation meeting inviting the ministry of finance, budget office of the federation, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission and again, with their employers on the 1st of March,” Ngige added.

“After that, it became clear that two cardinal things were still keen — the issue of renegotiation of their welfare package as in the 2009 agreement; that agreement says you can review every five years, so, that issue stuck out like a sore thumb.

“Then another issue arose in that agreement — the payment platform of university transparency, accountability solution, which they say they’ve invented. They said they don’t want to be on IPPIS; that IPPIS was amputating their salaries and taking off certain allowances, and so, that it is not capturing their peculiarities.

“So, we now have to ask them to go back to these places, form committees with them. Education took them on the issue of 2009 agreement, which is renegotiation of their conditions of service, emolument, their remuneration allowances. Therefore, salaries, income and wages, and ministry of finance that produce the money are involved. So, they went back.”

Addressing newsmen on Tuesday at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport in Calabar, Ayade said he remained committed to the victory of the party at the polls, regardless of the outcome of the presidential primaries.

“As for my presidential ambition, indeed, l am grateful to God that he gave me the opportunity to showcase to the country what I had to offer.

“I am happy because sincerely, l like the reactions that l have received from various people about my speech at the primaries.

“There was a clear indication that everyone knew that l had something to offer this country, but it was not my time, it was not my day.

“It was someone else’s and l am happy for Sen. Bola Tinubu who has taken the ticket of our party.

“Based on the principle of our party, we will all work to deliver him come 2023. Cross River will ensure 100 per cent votes for our presidential candidate,” he said.

“I just got back from Spain where l went for an extensive meeting and discussions with the intent to actually bring oxygen to Cally Air.

SERAP sued INEC over the commission’s failure to extend the voter registration.

It asked the court to declare as unconstitutional, illegal, and incompatible with international standards the commission’s failure to extend the deadline for voter registration to allow eligible Nigerians to exercise their rights.

In the suit filed alongside 185 others, SERAP asked the court for an order restraining INEC, its agents, or any other person(s) claiming through it from discontinuing the continuous voters’ registration exercise from June 30 pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

Justice Johnson adjourned the matter until June 29 to hear the motion on notice.

SERAP said the suit was premised on the grounds that INEC extended the deadline for the conduct of primaries but failed to also extend the online pre-registration which ended May 30 and the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) ending June 30.

In the suit with the number FHC/L/CS/1034/2022 filed at the Federal High Court, Lagos, and transferred to Abuja, SERAP is asking the court for the following reliefs amongst others:

“To determine whether the failure of INEC to extend the deadline for voter registration is not a violation of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act, and international standards.

Crime5 Inconsistencies In The Alleged Kidnapping Of Ameerah Sufyan by Azeemokoya(op): 7:07pm On Jun 18, 2022
On Tuesday 14th of June 2022, at exactly 1:16 pm, a certain Ameerah Sufyan claimed that she had been kidnapped. She shared this on Twitter. Her tweet stated that she was kidnapped at gunpoint, with 17 other people, including 3 pregnant women, from different parts of Abuja. Naturally, her tweet raised a lot of alarm on Twitter spaces, with users calling on security forces to quickly rescue the alleged abductees.

On Friday 17th of June, the FCT police force debunked the alleged incident and states that Ameerah has in fact been found, and not rescued. Since this development, Twitter users have become agog and want an explanation. This article will point out five inconsistencies since the beginning of the saga.

1. Possession of a mobile device

It is not news that when people are under hostage one of the first things the hijackers do is thoroughly search their victims. Particularly for mobile devices. Somehow, Ameerah successfully hid her device, while still under constant surveillance.

2. Clear and concise information
When the alleged abductee started sharing updates about the kidnappings, she used clear language while passing her message. There was no iota of panic whatsoever in any of her messages.

3. WhatsApp location updates
While alternating between Twitter and WhatsApp, she shared her location to several people on her WhatsApp. Which again begs the question : how have they still not caught you?

The Senate has directed the Federal Ministry of Justice to ensure the prosecution of any official of the Correctional Service found complicit in the unjustified incarceration of minors.

It also directed its Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters; and Interior to investigate the circumstances surrounding the admission of each inmate of the Borstal facilities and come up with appropriate recommendations to the Senate.

These were resolutions reached by the Senate on Wednesday, June 15, after it considered a motion on “The need to investigate admission of inmates and operations of Borstal facilities across Nigeria”.

The motion was sponsored by Sen. Oluremi Tinubu (APC-Lagos) during the plenary.

The Senate also directed the relevant authorities to ensure the implementation of the Child Rights Act 2003; while urging State Assemblies across the country on its domestication.

Tinubu noted that the Borstal Institutions attempt to keep delinquents out of prison and away from adult offenders to avoid molestation and negative influence that could make them become repeat offenders.

According to her, there are only three borstal facilities in Nigeria, situated in Kaduna, Abeokuta, and Ilorin.

Tinubu observed that these Borstal facilities were established to admit only male juvenile delinquents between ages 16 and 21 on the day of conviction.

PoliticsTinubu Scores APC Government High In National Development by Azeemokoya(op): 6:31am On Jun 15, 2022
The Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Bola Tinubu, has boasted that no political party can wrestle power from the ruling APC.

He said APC has brought so much development to the country that it will be difficult for any other political party to defeat it in any election.

Tinubu gave the assertion at the grand finale of the campaign activities of APC for the Ekiti Governorship election on Tuesday, June 14, at Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti.

He said going by President Muhammadu Buhari-led government’s developmental strides, it will be difficult for any political party to take over governance from the party at the moment or in the nearest future.

Tinubu, who allayed the fears of infighting in APC as a result of the just concluded presidential primary election, said it is making the party stronger, stable and united now than before.

He assured Ekiti people of more development and dividends of democracy if they vote for APC in the June 18 governorship election and the 2023 general elections.

“There is no home without a quarrel. Democracy is full of twists and thorns, hills and valleys; but we cannot burn down the house, I am not going to be a party to that. I am not only a builder but a successful builder.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has asked me to deliver a message to APC members, particularly those in Ekiti to work for the unity, stability, and progress of our dear party ahead of the 2023 elections.

Politics2023: Battle Line Drawn For Tinubu, Obi And Atiku by Azeemokoya(op): 1:23pm On Jun 13, 2022
Now that the major players in the political scene in Nigeria have known their Presidential candidates, the battle is now set for who occupies the number one seat in the land between Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.

Not ruling out the chances of other presidential candidates of other political parties, these three are seen as the frontrunners for the top seat in Nigeria for the upcoming 2023 general election.

The credibility of these men can’t be questioned having been in the public office for over a decade except for Obi who is a two term governor in Anambra.

The fact remains that it is a game of number. Who will get the highest number of votes come 2023?

By this time next year, Nigeria will have another President in power. It won’t be a surprise if one of them emerge the winner of the election.

Peter Obi gaining a lot of followers on social media

The social media has been no doubt a huge tool in the Nigeria space, especially join political and entertainment matters.

This could be the reason Peter Obi has been putting this to a good use. His support base has risen in matter of days after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party for the Labour Party.

“Whenever I hear of NO STRUCTURE, my answer to it is simple; the 100 million Nigerians that live in poverty will be the structure. The 35 million Nigerians who don’t know where their next meal will come from will be the structure,” Peter Obi responded in one of his tweets.

But the questions many needs to answer is that will that result into votes come next year? The obvious answer is no.

The social media campaign is good so far it is not of hate or some shrewd propaganda to smear the image of your opponent.

But can Peter Obi who against all odds emerged governor in Anambra, breaking the stronghold of the PD in the state do it again as a President? Time will tell.

Obi is said to have no structure to gather enough votes. But the former Anambra governor has claimed that his structure are those that have been disappointed by government in the past alongside the youths.

Can Tinubu do the job?
Tinubu has the needed resources but his barrier will be his ill health should he emerge the President.

There have been videos on the internet that shows that this would pose a huge challenge for him.
