Politics › Lagos Sends 300 People With Kidney Problems Abroad For Treatment. by babapupa(op): 2:08am On Dec 01, 2010 |
Lagos — About 300 people with kidney related problems were sent abroad for treatment by the Lagos State government in the past one year. Governor Babatunde Fashola disclosed this when he received a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) yesterday. According to Fashola, the 300 beneficiaries were referred to hospitals in England, US and India due to lack of necessary facilities for the surgery in Nigeria. The governor also reiterated the commitment of the state government to develop the Gbagada General Hospital's Intensive Care Unit for kidney transplant and dialysis. He said the project would be executed in the first quarter of 2011. "We are already recruiting staff and consultants, who will manage the facilities at the hospital," he added. http://allafrica.com/stories/printable/201011300227.html |

ShangoThor: Nigerians should get more business savvy!!!
Head line should read: Fashola achieves efficiency gains of over 2330%, WOW!!! !!!
The actions of this reporter are outrageous. It took me less than one minute to find out who the CEO of ABC is online and it is definitely not Tinunbu. ABC is a consortium made up of Nigerians in the diaspora.
I also noted that the objectivity of the reporter was evidently clouded because he was more concerned with insinuating shady dealings between Fashola and Tinunbu as opposed to discerning the great strides in efficiency that the government had made. For argument sake, so what if ABC belongs to Tinunbu. If this were true, then the most that Fashola could be accused of is ‘cronyism’ which isn’t against the law.
Di.ck Chenney, a major shareholder and previous CEO of Halliburton was later elected Vice President of the USA on George Bush jnr’s ticket. Halliburton was later awarded huge reconstruction contracts worth billions of dollars $ in IRAQ after it was decimated by the allies in IRAQ war 2. My point is that this is cronyism at it’s worst (conflict of interest –business ethics?) however, it isn’t illegal.
All that matters here is business and good results or performance. BRF stated that the implementation of the new computerised taxation system led to the increased total revenue collection from 600 million pcm to 14 billion pcm.
That is an efficiency gain of over 2330%. If these gains were achieved in the City of London or Wall Street BRF would be celebrated, given awards or given an annual bonus of over 100 million pounds. Furthermore, efficiency gains of over 2330% in my opinion would justify a remuneration of up to 10% to ABC, the company responsible for implementing such a system. If BRF was President of Nigeria and in his first year was able to realize such gains as 2330% in the coffers of the state things would be drastically different.
Any monkey can spend money, but only exceptional individuals with financial intelligence can make money legitimately. Thanks for this wonderful post. Unfortunately, our country is messed up because people get away with unpatriotic acts like corruption and aiding and abetting journalism and news media. Our journalists are very lazy intellectually, they have zero sense of intellectual curiosity. And just like many sad posts in this thread by many of our so called leaders of tomorrow, no wonder our country is heading backward instead of forward. They've been conditioned to ridicule everything and everything based on ignorance, illiteracy and tribal reasoning, it' damn too hard for many differentiate between good and bad. A journalist secured and opportunity to interview a state governor and instead of discussing many critical issues facing the people of Lagos state like housing, transportation and unemployment, he shamefully wasted the opportunity with insults, redundant and baseless accusations with lousy puerile display after the interview. What a great disservice to his readers. Based on the amount ABC sends to the coffers of the Lagos state government, they deserve every penny they get back in form of remuneration |

Ade2K8: @Anayordike:
While the various attempts by our foolish leaders at re-branding Nigeria will surely continue to fail (for the simple fact that we continue to fail to fix underlying problems like transportion, electricity, fair elections, corruption, murderous cops, etc), the re-branding of Ndigbo need not meet the same fate. While I don't agree that anything much can be done about the real or perceived lust for money by your people, this is not a problem peculiar to Ndigbo. I suspect the greater problem is actually two-fold, both of which you alluded to: i) the persecution complex that apparently springs from the fact that an Igbo man or woman has not been president for 40 odd years and ii) your apparent egomania that assures you that all your other countrymen are lazy, silly, illiterates , etc and that if it weren't for Ndigbo, we'd all probably perish.
First, the fact that you haven't produced a president DOES NOT mean that your countrymen are all against you; it simply means that today's Ndigbo leaders have failed to play the political chessgame intelligently enough, afterall we all know that, at least currently, our votes don't count. It would seem that the next step should be to ally yourselves loudly with those Yoruba and Hausa progressives who seek to produce better elections, governance, etc even though we know there are no perfect politicians. But what do you guys do? Instead (and this brings me to point (ii) above), you seldom fail to diminish or belittle the accomplishments of others, refuse to call erring Alaigbo to order (do you remember Yoruba hatred of OBJ?) and generally resort to insular narrowmindedness. You assure all and sundry that all you care about is either Biafra or Ndigbo alone. This only serves to solidify the latent mistrust already there from your perceived love of money. But it is these same lazy, silly fools you want (no, need) to vote your way in the future. Can Ndigbo or any single tribe (even the Hausas) win a free and fair election if no other tribe votes for you? I seriously doubt it.
Ndigbo are in fact an intelligent, industrious, entrepreneurial people and are an asset to any nation. But you are NOT the only ones so endowed. Simply stop telling us that you are the sun that warms Nigeria and try and love your countrymen a bit more (or hate us less, whichever is easier - you'll actually feel better ).
My brothers, I wish you Godspeed. Excellent Post. Mega Kudos. |

Onlytruth: My message to Ndigbo:
We are a very special people in Nigeria, Africa and the world. We have done a lot to advance the pride of Nigeria, Africa and the human race. There is no need recounting what we have done since 1960 to bring accolade to Nigeria. The records are there. The most important thing is to remember how we did it to enable us replicate it over and over again in the future. If you ask me, I would say that the following are the greatest attributes of Ndigbo and what propels us ahead of our detractors and competitors. I can say these things because I am confident that no one can beat us in them if we NEVER forget them:
(1)Discipline : Igbo man and woman has a STRONG sense of mission and deploy the discipline required to accomplish that mission. While others are busy having 5 children by 5 women, we stick to one woman and her kids! Great attribute.
(2)Grit: We can be gritty when necessary to achieve a goal. HARDWORK folks!
(3) Long suffering: This is perhaps our greatest behavioral asset. It is a dying asset though because we have parents these days who spoil their kids thinking they are doing them a favor. Through painstaking HARDWORK, people like Chinua Achebe, Chike Obi, Phillip Emeagwali ETC achieved what others could not. Don't let anyone tell you there is a short cut. THERE IS NONE.
(4) Focus:We are not easily distracted from our set goal. That is why we are still alive and beating others today. Never imbibe strange cultures that undermine this attribute!
(5) Courage: Please folks go and read the Bible, book of Joshua Chapter 1 from verse 6 to 7. We have always been courageous to embark on ventures and live in hostile areas. We must continue that way.
If we continue to do these things, our future in Nigeria and the world is secure.
Finally, do not allow others to define you! Like they have worked so hard to re-define Phillip Emeagwali.
It is naive to think that you would not be affected by these definitions. If you don't want to counter these views, don't try to justify your choice of action. It is my idea of selfishness that will eventually catch up with you. All for one, one for all!
Ndewo nu!
Signed, Ikenga dike 1 of Nnewi. This is the problem with you people, you very paranoid and delusional, you irrationally make up your own enemy and manufacture needless distraction, same distraction that's been killing you since day one. All the rubbish you listed up there means nothing per realities on the ground in your towns and villages and generally per your history. It's nothing but irrational and paranoid talk. Revenue collection is an important function of Govt but if this is in private hands, then info about the company should be readily available. Which public record can we get this? Tell us since you know
BTW, I checked Alpha Beta's website; no information about the owners http://www.alpha-beta.net/index.htm
I also sent an inquiry to CAC to help unfold this mystery. http://www.cac.gov.ng/
People like you simply sit on your backside and accept any garbage tossed at you. Asking tough questions and seeking the truth from your elected representatives is your responsibility as a citizen. occam: @ mbulela
Ok, lets agree to disagree about Sowore's style: I like it, you don't. Period
My concern is about transparency in govt. Gov Fashola should have gone the extra mile to shed more light on the thorny issue of Alpha Beta ownership & any perceived relationship with Tinubu. Simply saying "As far as I know, Gov Tinubu is not the owner of Alpha Beta" was not enough. A missed opportunity to show great leadership
This is a company that helps his administration collect NGN14 billion per month in revenue; not just a vendor that supplies books for Primary school. It's therefore a big deal that we know who they are, how they operate etc. And if there is any perception of corruption with this company, Gov Fashola should do more to assure people that this is false. Don't simply ask people to provide evidence
Some leaders in Nigeria believe they don't owe anyone explanation. When you question them too hard, they say you are too rude and refuse to respond properly or not at all. I think Fashola is falling into this class of politicians.
Well I wish the Gov all the best and hope any whiff of corruption does not dent the great work he's doing in Lagos state You are not making any sense, some of you just run your moth just for the heck of it. The argument here has nothing to do with accountability, the man sat there an answered every question thrown at him. The man said as far as I know. What part of that is confusing? Too bad the governor did not offer you your desired details about ownership of some company. Is it now part of the governor's job to start keeping tabs on who owns what within the state? The burden is on the investigative journalist to find answers to basic questions of ownership and it's not like the answer is locked in some volt, these are public records. Too bad we have useless and intellectually lazy news men wannabee, instead of doing the leg work and find answers to questions, they throw out silly and unfounded allegations. No American university will offer such information to a reporter unless Emengwali permits them to do so. Common, many American universities do not agree to release or tell parents the results of their children unless they have a written consent, how much less an outsider.
How many of you here attended university in the US, please can you tell us your school's policy about sharing your private information with a third party?.
