How do you justify killing yourself because of other peoples inaction? Ignorance kills. Our undertable or ground water is not safe for human consumption and asking the gov to test every street in lagos sounds ridiculous, where are they going to get the man power an resources from?
must_a_far:
babapupa, i understand all you have said. but how about areas of lagos that are not served by water corp? should they go waterless due to the ban. what i think the water corp can do is to have their people check and test water from boreholes at intervals. if they think its ok for use then they certify it ok and keep on moving but if they discover its not, they can either recommend water treatment solutionand require the owners to get them or if theres no remedy to filtering out the hazardous chemicals then they should shut the boreholes(but then that still would put those people in a sitaution where they dont have access to water which the borehole was meant to fix)

dnt mind them, they havent said the truth. The issue is people are resolving to borehole because water works like Nepa is not reliable and they are loosing patronage. Thank God there's affordable alternative to their lapses unlike NEPA's.
Though improving, the water situation is still not the best, but this is really about public safety. Many people are silently dying for drinking untreated water from boreholes. Untreated water from boreholes contains many harmful pathogens, lead and other dangerous chemicals and metals and many boreholes are dug in polluted areas close to septic tanks and sewage.

Just imagine boreholes in areas with illegal oil wells. The underground water in those areas are full of dangerous chemicals and cancer carbons.

There is no doubt about it that Fashola has done well, but one state out of 36, is still a bad mark.
You should be more specific. All levels of government could be easily termed all levels of Lagos state government because this discussion is about Lagos state.

The other nations that they are talking about, collects money and people see what they have done with the money, unlike Nigeria's govt that lace their wallet with the money
U mean you can not see what Fashola is doing with the tax payer's money?

What about the street sweepers? Are they getting

What about the civil service and government agencies ? Are they getting paid or not?

What about the built roads and bridges and the ones under construction? Where did the money came from?

What about the hospitals and maternal health centers? Who is paying for them?

What about the Schools and driver's institutes? Where is the money coming from?

What about money spent on transportation infrastructures like jetties, rail system and freeways?

Kobojunkie:
I can answer that question for you. The roads were in good condition and well maintained throughout the Jakande era. We had at that time found a sort of solution to the drainage problem in Lagos as well. The state worked to generate revenue through taxes and other ventures to ensure that people had access to utilities at affordable prices. So Lagos roads were pliable and maintained during the Jakande era.
Unfortunately for you again, good reasoning and common sense did you wrong.

1. Jakande's road was a basic rural road serving fishing villages like lekki and beyond.

2. Lekki, AJah and all the bustling areas all the way to Epe were less populated and less traveled.

3. The entire population of the area and Lagos state in  general was less than 7 million.

4. Jakande didn't have the less than glamorous responsibilities of dealing with and providing infrastructures for a 18 million + 10,00/day moving in like the current State government.

Fashola Receives One Day Governor, Oluwatoyin Adeosun
…Says Govt would continue to confront challenges in Education Sector

Jul 26, 2010 - Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Monday hosted the 2010 One Day Governor, Miss Oluwatoyin Adeosun at the Lagos House, Ikeja reiterating that the State Government would continue to confront challenges in the field of education.

Governor Fashola who spoke at the Executive Council Chambers when the One Day Governor and members of her executive council addressed members of the State's Council added that all problems cannot be solved in one day but would continuously receive Government's attention.

Governor Fashola explained that the State Executive Council has already tabled the issue of provision of more classrooms for discussion at the weekly meeting, declaring that in the last three years, the administration has provided over 250, 000 classrooms round the state.

The Governor explained that the heartwarming part of the provision of the classrooms is that they all come with well equipped laboratories and Information Technology facilities which are vital for ensuring the imparting of quality learning.

Governor Fashola commended the initiative of former First Lady, Chief (Mrs) Oluremi Tinubu for initiating the One Day Governor's programme through her New Era Foundation, saying the programme has produced students who recorded outstanding performances in Universities.

He noted that part of the recognition of the efforts of Mrs Tinubu in producing future leaders was amply demonstrated at the last National Honours Award in Abuja where her commitment in the New Era Foundation formed part of her citation while receiving the National Honours Award conferred on her.

He said the One Day programme has succeeded in making young people live a dream and finding inspiration to believe that nothing is impossible for them to achieve, stressing that it may be a very high altitude to climb but very achievable.

Governor Fashola said it has also assisted in bringing young ones to understand the workings of government so that they do not act anymore as strangers but are well informed from their teenage years.

Governor Fashola said the State Government would address some of the issues raised by the One Day Governor about the state of affairs in her school.

Speaking earlier, the One Day Governor, Miss Oluwatoyin Adeosun commended Governor Fashola for making the dividends of democracy very glaring in several sectors.

She said particularly, his efforts in the Education sector through the EKO Project, physical infrastructure, furniture for staff and students, in-service training for teachers are highly commendable.

She also sought the assistance of the Governor in ensuring the provision of more teachers for subjects like Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics as well as provision of adequate classrooms and facilities for effective teaching and learning.

She appealed for the relocation of her Alma Mata Meiran Community Senior High School to an expanse of land within the premises of Lagos State Model College, Meiran in addition to the provision of well equipped laboratories and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre.

The One Day Governor added that such facilities will further accelerate the development of the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the present and future students of the school.

The One Day Governor who was accompanied by her Deputy, Master Adesoji Adeshina and other cabinet members was later presented with a souvenir by the State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN).

Other cabinet members who were on the entourage of Miss Adeosun are Master Bolaji Abayomi (Health), Master Chidiebere Oduchie (Environment), Master Chukwudi Opekie (Budget) and Master Wuraola Folahanmi (Information).

The event which was witnessed by the parents of the One Day Governor, Mr and Mrs Adeosun also had members of the State Executive Council in attendance.

The man asked how we can get rid of Tinubu and his criminal gang in Lagos. My answer, Dosman, is to vote his surrogattes at the Governor's Office and
the State house of Assembly OUT OF OFFICE.

What you do not know is that Bola Tinubu and Babatunde Raji Fashola are now jointly the 4th largest landowners in Nigeria!! Of course, most of that land is in Lagos State, and used to belong to the people of Lagos before all their dodgy acquisitions.

Check out 4 Queens Drive Ikoyi, which used to be a Lagos State Government Guest House. It now belongs to Bola Tinubu and is being rebuilt into a massive palace by Lagos State Government at the cost of N80 billion. The contract was given to Messrs Cappa and D'Alberto.

If you think I'm lying, check out the place and see if there's no construction going on!

FASHOLA MUST GO!!
So the state is funding Tinubu's personal mansion right? Who approved or budgeted the funds? Fashola? Tinubu? The state legislatures or just all 3?

You guys must really quit the charade and consolidate your IDs.

Debate you? Your words are not even yours. You have nothing to debate about. You lifted quotes straight from a five year old report concerning one single community in Anambra State, and then generalized it to somehow represent Igbo communities everywhere. Any debate that may arise from this would be on your stupidity in using such an obviously flawed logical fallacy. If you were debating the comprehensively retarded, that may have worked. It won't work here.
Unfortunately for you, it makes not difference because this is your culture and way of life. We see it every day and it was even documented by the United Nations.

What we're witnessing is another side of Igbo culture and their violent belief system that  husband has the right to scold his wife if she does something wrong. As the head of the family who paid dowry price on her head, he has the right to reprimand or scold her. A good wife should not exchange words with the husband. Itis a mark of disobedience or challenge to his manhood.

And if a woman doesn't submit like bingo, they label her the derogatory owalu anya. A remark that implicates her as a culture
deviant, thereby putting her in double jeopardy of losing the existing marriage and having slim chances of remarrying.

What about wife inheritance (ihachi nwanyi), whereby a daughter is kept unmarried in the paternal home to bear children and a widow does not re-marry but continues to ‘bear’ children for her dead husband?

My assertion was nothing but the sad and unfortunate reality of life within Igbo comunities. It really wasn't meant to pain you or stir up your insecurities.

It is an accepted practice withing the Igbo community to accept and treat women as bought and owned objects that you're free to do anything with.

These belief systems are even displayed right after birth. They let you know upfront that their female kids are for sale and their male kids are all about violence hence the phrase at the announcement of the birth of a male-child, the women sing folk-songs that invite a man
who has a gun to fire it onyi ji egbe gbaa nga, meaning “He who has a gun, let him fire”. In contrast, however, at the birth of a female baby
a person with money is invited Onye ji ego gbaa nga, meaning: “He who has money, let him come forth”.

Just as the two winners of the programme: “Be Road Friendly” will be heading to the United Kingdom, August this year, Lagos State government has concluded plans to give immediate job opportunity to graduates of Lagos State University School of Traffic (LASUSOT) in order to alleviate the suffering of the unemployed graduates of the state.
Speaking at the 2010 second edition of the programme titled: “Be Road Friendly Competition” held at LASU recently, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babatunde Fashola on Transport Education, Dr. Mrs Mariam Masha has said that the competition is aimed at imbuing in our children basic traffic safety knowledge early in life in order to develop the right road user attitude and behaviour.

A cross section of ‘Be Road Friendly’ competitors.

She stated that the sensitization programme will help children learn, appreciate and get better understanding of traffic rules and its regulation adding that at the long run it will create the opportunity to actively contribute to relevant traffic management solutions for the state.

Recounting the success of the 2009 maiden edition, Masha noted that the winners embarked on a transport educational tour to the United Kingdom with the aim to further sharpen their knowledge on modern transport systems and traffic education.

According to Mariam the would be winners of the 2010 “Be Road Friendly Competition” are meant to write a variety of topical issues relevant to safety and traffic management and to also actively participate in “Photo Story” by identifying locations within the state to take picture of traffic challenges and proceed to proffering solutions to these traffic management issues after receiving lecture on the usage of camera.”

The grand finale she said is today which will allow for the formal presentation of findings and defending their pictures and solutions before the panel of judges by an independent panel of experts comprising both public and private sector organisations. Just like the 2009, winners prizes for the first and second place, Mariam maintained will be afforded an educational tour to the United Kingdom to visit the London Transport Museum, Department for Transport and Transport for London.

Also speaking, Dean, School of Transport Studies, Dr.Tajudeen Bawa-Allah reiterated that governor Babatunde Fashola has concluded plans to give immediate job opportunity to graduates of Lagos State School of Traffic saying that the course is not for school drop-outs as it is the same SSCE qualification for student aspiring to read medicine.

The entry qualification, according to Bawa-Allah are English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Geography and Accounting.

Explaining further, he maintained that English Language, Mathematics and Physic are a must credited subjects and few other subjects which must include either Geography for those aspiring for B.Sc. Honours in Transport Planning, and Economics for those coveting B.Sc. Honours in Transport Management, while those who want B.Sc. Honours in Transport Technology and Infrastructure must have obtained a credit in Chemistry. “Transport covers these basic areas which include: transport planning, transport management and transport technology and infrastructure,” he said.

Bawa-Allah pointed out that LASTMA Area Commander A and B were products of LASUSOT adding that presently, they have about thirty-eight of them undergoing that course.

The present one hundred (100) students in Transport course can heave a sigh of relieve as Governor Babatunde Fashola according to Bawa-Allah has promised them immediate job opportunity after graduation.

Fashola Signs Law To Standardise Tourism, Hotel Practice In Lagos

Jul 19, 2010 - Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Monday signed into law a bill for the regulation and standardization of the tourism sector including hotel practice in the State, saying the future holds much more than oil for major oil producing countries.

Governor Fashola who spoke at the Conference Room of the Lagos House, Ikeja added that this explains why such oil producing giants are now investing their oil proceeds to diversify away from oil and move into other sectors like Agriculture, knowledge based economy like Information Technology, Green Energy and Tourism.

Said he: "Lagos is one of those States that have the capacity to really diversify its economy towards the area of tourism and that is why we have spent so much of tax payers money trying to provide the environment that would support a growth of tourism".

The Governor explained that tourism is about destination, saying if the people cannot get there, there is no tourism.

Governor Fashola added that this explains the massive construction of road network such as the Lagos Badagry Expressway, the Lekki-Epe Concession which are strategic investments to boost tourism and improve the economic possibilities that lie there.

"We have the same Atlantic Ocean that goes all the way round the West Coast and as far as Brazil, saying: "If Brazil is making money from the Atlantic, why are we not doing the same thing. Laws like this also exist in all those jurisdictions".

Governor Fashola acknowledged that the tourism and hospitality sector of the economy is looking up and getting better by the day, citing the instances of many businesses that hitherto closed at 7pm but now extending till late in the night.

"More hotels have opened in Lagos in the last three years and more are still coming. It is important for us to be able to measure this growth. Legislations such as this will enable us, apart from reviewing some of the prescriptions here to bring them in conformity with current laws and have a data where it is possible to enable us know how many new people come into this economy or how many people it is employing", the Governor added.

The Governor said in addition to the fact that it represents a way of self benchmarking, it would also help measure how many people are being employed in the tourism industry in order to empower Government to know how much more it has to do.

In his words: "We complain about unemployment, but we have not really opened up the economy of this state and to the possibilities. For example, our greening has employed over 5000 people. We are also looking at solid waste management, waste water treatment and similar ones that have to be opened up. This is also an economic policy that can expand the economy".

Governor Fashola thanked the members of the State House of Assembly for enacting the useful piece of legislation.

Earlier, while giving an insight into the bill, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political and Legislative Matters, Hon AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef said the law will standardize the tourism sector as well as regulate hotel practice by amending the provisions of the hotel licensing law of 2003.

Hon AbdulHakeem disclosed that immediately the Governor assents to the bill, the hotel licensing law of 2003 becomes amended, adding the law has been expanded to include the regulation of tourism practice.

He explained that the former law which stipulates that no person shall operate or keep any brothel without obtaining license or permission from the Hotel and Tourism licensing authority has been amended to read that no person would be allowed to operate a hotel establishment or practice tourism in Lagos State in any premises without first obtaining the license of the authority.

He explained that the penalties prescribed under the former law are so outdated that it has witnessed high level of disobedience with maximum penalties ranging between N100 and N200 for offences.

The Special Adviser also said the new law has also given power to Hotel and Tourism Licensing Authority to standardize, regulate and grade the various hotels and tourism businesses operating in Lagos State in line with best practices.

He said the Commissioner responsible for managing the provisions of the new law is the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism and Inter-Governmental Relations.

The event was witnessed by members of the State Executive Council including the Commissioner for Tourism and Inter-Governmental Relations, Senator Tokunboh Afikuyomi, the Chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Local Government, Hon Onibiyo Adelabu, representatives of the National Association of Travel Agents and Association of Lagos Hoteliers.

Since the questions above signal the repetitiveness of this thread, I'll leave you with one answer so this thread can end:

"Its a project for the benefit of u and all nigerians that can afford to reside there."
- One of the "intelligent" "articulating" "well read" members of Nairaland.
Basically, you are against this project because the average Nigerian can not afford to reside there? Going by the same thinking, the Government of Lagos state shouldn't and never allow this/any investment within the state unless the average/poor Lagosian is guaranteed access and affordability? (It is still my believe that your silly and petty argument is strictly tribal)

Also. Daimler Benz shouldn't be allowed to open up a production/manufacturing plant in Nigeria because the average/poor Lagosian can not afford a Benz?

The questions was an opportunity for you to redeem yourself, but you blew it by clueless displaying the fact that I've been going back and forth with the dumbest and mentally challenged human being  alive.

The "intelligent" people said that is socialism, go back to page 1.

Exactly, if they haven't sorted all this out why are they jumping into a massive project to build luxury attractions, and with that same point how is Eko Atlantic going to eradicate poverty when the poor people themselves won't have hospitals or housing because the government hasn't sorted itself out? Or maybe Eko Atlantic would provide so much money to these poor people that they would be able to visit private hospitals? And what jobs would the majority do, Cleaning? Window wipers? Refuse disposal?

Uhm, in case you did not understand, there is still going to be slum areas in Lagos when this project is finished, or maybe I'm wrong?

It has become apparent that the post above is the only thing you have to contribute to this matter and that your main reason for defending this project is ethnically driven. A shame though.
After 11 pages of your rudimentary and pointless insinuations, you are yet to articulate how and why this project is not good for lagosians. You keep repeating how the government is not sorting out something and jumping into this project. But please let me ask you a few questions and finally arrest your concerns.

1. How and in what way is this project not good for Lagosians?

2. Is it your believe that the government should not allow private investments within the state till every soul in the state of Lagos is out of poverty?

3. In what way will this project prevent the state from building roads, bridges, hospitals, pay pensions, pay teachers, pay road cleaners and maintain state infrastructures?

4. What do you want the government to sort out before allowing investments and creating jobs?

5. Is it your believe that the government of Lagos state is not building hospitals or building low cost housing for Lagosians?

6. What do you think the Lagos state government is not doing and should be doing?

7. Is EA a government project or a private project?

8. How is EA preventing the government from carrying out it's statutory obligations like attending to the needs of Lagos state?

9. Is collected tax money from EA good or bad for the government of Lagos state and  Lagosians?

Answer these questions if your concerns are genuinely about the state of Lagos and Lagosians.
