IMHO, the only thing that can make market forces work is if we actually get off our arses, start working and producing stuff locally. As long as we keep relying on Abuja handouts, oil subsidies, corruption and importation, market forces will never work in the country ans we will remain poor and wretched.

You people should please leave this well known yeye attention seeker called BEAF and lets talk about the issue at hand, nobody should respond to him again,he is having a swell time with your responses,i know him

The whole subsidy issue is simple.

1.There is simply nothing like those benefitting from the subsidy, its simply business
2.There is a shortfall in demand and the supply of petroleum product in the country
3.Business men import the products to make up for the shortfalls
4.There is what we call landing cost and profit margin per litre, which the importers must make from their investment
5.The govt have failed in thier social contract with the people to provide the basic nessesity  by not allowing the refinaries to work

You simply don’t put the cart before the horse, make the refinaries work first, then the subsidy will naturally remove itself, when it
will no longer be profitable for the importers.Nigerians are not daft,we all know that it is simply unsustainable to continue to subsidize
fuel products to the tune of 1.5 trillion annually.SIMPLY MAKE THE REFINERIES WORK

The excuse of providing infrastructures does not sell, what our taxes used for, without the removal of subsidy we would not be provided
our basic infrastructures? .Our leaders are never sincere, all they do is lip service. They simply do not have that burden for the masses
If you see the way politicians take up issues that concern their people in other countries, you would marvel

Dude, stop fighting for petroleum subsidy and fight for true federalism instead. Burn the place down for the PIB and I will support you, but this senseless fight to remain beggars must stop; it is not worth it.
the refineries will not work until the whole framework that supports the legal stealing from the country is destroyed, and that is why the subsidy must go.

Going by this level of ineptitude in goverment, you want me to accept that the best solution to the fuel subsidy issue is to do the following
a) Completely Remove the subsidy so that everyone buys petrol at international market price, (a death blow to our already devastated economy)
b) Sit back and pray that our inefficient and corrupt MDA's efficiently implement the palliatives to CUSHION THE OTHERWISE DEVASTATING EFFECTS OF THE SUBSIDY REMOVAL.

I look forward to your WISE and INFORMED comment

klas:
What backing do you need? copy of the invoice or payment voucher?

If total fuel cost (refining cost + shipping+ other costs+margin) = let say N120 and public pays only N65 while govt pays the balance as subsidy. Do you require rocket science that if government remove its subsidy, somebody has to pay the shortfall and that is the consumer.

And to the marketer, what difference does it make to him whether the full price is fully paid by the public or partly paid by the public and partly by the government?

So long as we are still importing, the fuel importers must pay the full cost at the at the refinery and must recover their full cost

Removal of the subsidy increases the price payable by the public not that it will reduce the cost or profit of the marketer. period.
Add on the exponential cost to the country of smuggling; after that, tell us the true consumption level of petrol in Nigeria and I'll get back to you, sir.
It is very simplistic to talk about drilling and pump prices without providing the full root and branch of the oil market. The devil is in the detail, GEJ has seen that devil and he doesn't like it one bit. cool

President, I'd introduce it by executive fiat or even go further by declaring a state of economic emergency. I'm really glad that GEJ seem to be thinking thesame.
Folks, I've always maintained that the subsidy on petrol has long outlived it's usefulness. Those who are against deregulation are either ignorant or just selfish 'cos the truth is that the benefit will outweigh the initial pain that it may cause.
Those calling for revolution must remenber that; revolution is like entering a dark tunnel, you don't know what awaits you at the other end.

I dont claim to be an expert in oil nor the subsidies thereof but my question is, if GEJ concentrates in building refineries as well as get the old ones working again, would there still be this question of a 'cabal robbing us dry' as they claim? Niger just unveiled their new Refinery. What is so difficult in building infrastructure in Nigeria especially when you hear of the money that passes through government? I voted for and campaigned for GEJ but some things dont just add up.

Removal of the subsidy without fully turning around PHCN would have a very bad effect on people. Do you realise how much, people would be spending to fueling generators in offices and homes? At least, lets be assured of 20 hrs of power in a day before talking of subsidy. Fueling of the car then, can be properly managed and people will learn to drive only when its absolutely necessary and thus decongest the roads a bit. But as long as PHCN is still neither here nor there, the removal would be very dangerous both to GEJ's presidency and to the well being of the people.
GEJ wants the govt to have exactly NOTHING to do with refining and importing fuel. All those conduits for cash to be legally stolen are going to be closed and one of the major reasons for the do or die battle to get into govt will be gone.
There are deals to build new refineries, but many will not kick off until they can get a fair price for their products. The first private refinery kicked off in Port Harcourt last week, though; its rather smallscale and might serve only Rivers state. Orient refinery is also slated to kick off in 2012, plus there are 2 Chinese backed refineries on the line for the Niger Delta / Kogi and one for Lagos.

You can get some info on Orient Refinery here: http://www.oprplc.com/Pages/AboutUs.aspx

They are not criminals, because it is legal.
Since IBB and Abacha's times, the subsidy has been a legal means to steal money. Both men built private refineries in foreign countries with Nigeria's money and deliberately phucked up our refineries so that they and their cronies could benefit from importing fuel. Abacha built a refinery in Sierra Leone, while IBB built refineries in Benin Republic and Ivory Coast.

GEJ wants to cut out that crap from the Nigerian system and make such theft illegal, just as it should be.
