This is one funny thread! I have travelled all over Nigeria, and been to practically all the 36 states (barring Cross River, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara). In practically every state of the North, you can stand on a high place and very nearly see Chad and Niger. ![]() When driving, you can travel pretty hefty distances between very tiny hamlets of ten or twenty huts. ![]() Our population figures are wrong. Its my opinion that popultation densities have been rejigged to suit the North, because people no de deh! |
One sad thing about Nigerians is that they prefer emotion to logic. You guys might hate Obasanjo, but do you also hate his message? Our emotionalism is something we must get a hold of. Please guys, lets simmer down and look dispassionately into the matter at hand. Two distinct fulcrums arise around both the sincererity of the messengers of true federalism and the desperate need for its unadulterated practice in Nigeria. On the issue of the messengers, some have been wholly unexpected, from previous dictators like Babangida and Obasanjo to the likes of Tunde Bakare vouching for Buhari (of the draconian Decree 4 fame): ``Nigeria needs a leader who will block the holes in the nation’s treasury, someone with programmes and policies that will restructure Nigeria along the path of true federalism,’’ Bakare said.http://www.sharpedgenews.com/news/2010/10-12-10/t_bakare.shtml The question is, do these people really grasp the concept of federalism or is it just the latest fad to pay it lip service, because the heavily burdened masses are weeping? We have to be alert that the argument and definitions are not snatched from us and bastardised. True federalism must never ever be twisted to mean the balkanisation of Nigeria into personal fiefdoms; that direction must be robustly resisted with the force of sincere logic and the purifying strength of spilt blood. The question of true federalism in Nigeria rests on needs to install merit, equality, healthy competition and most importantly; contracts of belonging between citizen and state. Things are clearly not working in Nigeria, because we have it all upside down. In a federation, the units work from the bottom up with local, provincial and regional units operating under municipal laws that are suited their identities and paying taxes from ground up until it gets to the centre. In the Nigerian case, there is a monthly match to Abuja for survival stipends for states and LG’s. Experience says beggars do not work. Experience says parasitism does not provide any sort of environment for healthy competition or merit to thrive as it is in normal countries. A parasite simply cannot develop, and all 36 states and their LG’s are parasites. Parasitism does not come naturally to the upright, therefore Nigeria’s institutionalisation of parasitism, very unsurprisingly throws up the most despicable characters for government posts, while our most talented run abroad for succour and personal fulfillment. It is a dire cycle that breeds rottenness and corruption, and weeds out honesty, merit, patriotism and talent. Allied to the above, is the sense of belonging of the average Nigerian. What makes one a Nigerian? What are the responsibilities of the Nigerian state to her citizens? In the converse, what is the responsibility of citizens to the Nigerian state? What bonds a Nigerian to Nigeria and how strong are those bonds? Is Nigeria just a piece of land on which we were born, with sharia in the North and oil in the South? The only way the questions above can be answered positively, is to provide true representation for the Nigerian; and the only way to provide true representation, is the installation of true federalism. |
Obasanjo lists yardsticks function federalism News Dec 19, 2010 By Innocent ANABA Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, said that for the country’s federalism to function well, there must be political will, good governance, and leadership commitment. Chief Obasanjo, who spoke at the just concluded ‘5th International Conference on Federalism’ in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, said, “It is my belief that in a diverse and developing society like Nigeria, you need a strong, though not intrusive or oppressive central government that is democratic, transparent, accountable, effective, efficient, and adequately funded to manage the rough edges of federal politics and protect weaker or less_resource endowed constituent units. Nigerians appreciate this fact.” “Ultimately, it is democratic practice, political will, good governance, leadership commitment, and a dedication to the cause of the people that determine the functioning of any federal arrangement. In essence, there must be popular participation at all tiers of government and facets of life with adequate accommodation for all for federalism to function appropriately.” Speaking further, he said “following military rule in the country, the challenge of re_federalisation has not been as easy as many continue to carry the consciousness of the unitary and hierarchical command character of the military. The powers of the sub_national units, joint delivery of services in education, energy, health, poverty eradication and so on, remain areas for discussions and negotiations. “The issue of fiscal federalism, processes of constitutional amendments, devolution of powers, public security, and strengthening federal character are also on_going areas of public discourse. “In some way therefore, federalism is natural to Nigeria as the basis for unity in diversity for development and progress was established centuries ago. The desire to, or imperative for unity, stability, growth, development and progress precipitated a preference for a political arrangement that will not just bring peoples together but also harness the creative and productive energies to build a viable nation state in the interest of all. “There was a declared need to rise beyond the various inter and intra ethnic and communal wars to build a nation_state that all would contribute to, be part of, but not lose their respective identities, cultures, values and traditional institutions. This, in some way, has been the underlying strength of Nigeria’s federalism,” he added. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2010/12/obasanjo-lists-yardsticks-function-federalism/ |
Court Orders EFCC To Release Akingbola’s Property Written by Akeem Nafiu, Lagos Saturday, 18 December 2010 A federal high court in Lagos has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to vacate the property of a former Managing Director of Intercontinental Bank Plc, Dr Erastus Akingbola, located at 12, Ruxton Road, Ikoyi. The order, according to Justice Charles Archibong, became imperative because the anti-graft agency took over the said property without the due process of law. The court also ordered that the EFCC immediately allow Akingbola full access and occupation of the property. Justice Archibong, while delivering his ruling on an originating summon filed by Akingbola, through his counsel, Felix Fagbohungbe (SAN), on Friday, agreed with the applicant that the said property was not in the schedule of the property attached by EFCC following the order of Justice Tijani Abubakar in December 2009. Justice Archibong, therefore, ordered the anti-graft agency to release the property to the former bank chief. However, the court refused to vary the bail condition granted him by Justice Mohammed Idris on August 30. “I will not vary the condition of the bail which the accused is admitted to bail in this present charge,” the judge ruled. The court adjourned till February 18, 2011 for Akingbola’s arraignment on fresh charges filed by the EFCC. http://tribune.com.ng/sat/index.php/news/2799-court-orders-efcc-to-release-akingbolas-property.html |
Nigeria: Northern Consensus, Biggest Fraud - Gov Shekarau George Agba And Chizoba Ogbeche 17 December 2010 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Abuja — Governor of Kano State and presidential aspirant of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has described the process that led to the emergence of former Vice- President Atiku Abubakar as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) consensus candidate of the North as the biggest fraud ever perpetrated in the country. The governor said he was not bothered by the selection of Abubakar as the PDP north's candidate in the 2011 elections because it was a decision of nine men and not that of the entire North. "I am not bothered by the issue of consensus candidate as that does not reflect the wishes of the entire north. The issue of the consensus candidate of the north is the biggest fraud ever perpetrated in this country as they do not have the support of the entire north," Shekarau said. . . . http://allafrica.com/stories/201012170582.html |
Goodluck/Sambo organisation replies Atiku on violent change Dele Anofi, Abuja 18/12/2010 00:42:00 The Goodluck/Sambo Presidential Campaign Organisation has assured the opposition that Nigerians would resist violence in whatever disguise. The assurance came in the wake of the call by former Vice President Atiku Abubaka that a violence change should be expected if President Jonathan refuses to relinquish power peacefully. In a statement by Sully Abu, Director, Media and Publicity, the organisation said the gathering where the stament was made was equally questionable. It reads in part: “We are sure Nigerians across the country will resist the incitement of fat cats and other pampered elements who may seek to disturb the peace of the land. “The security forces, we are sure, are alive to their responsibilities and would not countenance any breach of the peace and the antics of those who want to imperil our hard-won democracy. “Nigerians are not deceived. The annullers of elections and the motley crowd who made up the latest gathering represent none but themselves and in their desperation may go about renting crowds and urchins to stir up unnecessary dust in sponsored demonstrations. But this would not take them anywhere”, it stated. http://thenationonlineng.net/web3/news/22007.html |

vigasimple:Wisdom. The difference is like Coke and 7Up. One mingles with the people and builds alliances, the other is sectional and issues regular threats of war. |
Very nice. I really love the leafy look. it seems so serene. I haven't been to Enugu for years now. |
excanny:Cos they wanna steal oil. Is that what you want? Think hard about it. |
ode remo:I tuned to OHTV when you first posted and didn't see GEJ, it was just Adeboye talking about back pain and someones life being like a goat going round in circles! Damn! buzugee:Nice! Don't worry, keeping imagining the dregs of the food chain to be "predators." Olo ofofo! Nigerian police, predators! When you see just two or three red eyed kidnappers emanating from Okija, your mind will be fully reformed and your thoughts tightly focussed. If you like don't return home to get grounded, ya pipul go soon declare you missing. Akpa don don catch ground! |

luckyCO:That wasn't necessary. All you need do is add a reference to the dll in the installation file in programme files. Ensure "copy local" is set to true (right click the reference and choose properties). |
appletango:IBB, Tinubu and Atiku are serious criminals, so their supporters are in thrall crime. No? I am happy you agree your candidates are all irredeemably blemished sleaze bags. Dude, what you think of me is your cup of tea, it isn't my fault that you guys openly support known criminals. You can always make the right choice, so that you won't gripe. 10cirenoh:Really? Please point them out "IBB, Atiku, OBJ and co's own" without resorting to rumours. I have given you hard facts you can verify. It is in your court to check things out and come back with serious arguments (if any). |
10cirenoh:Yeah. Look it up. Info is very easy to come by. Look up Vera Ifudu's case as well, court documents are always rock solid. There used to be a sneaky way of stealing govt money in those days, you took several billion, put it in a fixed deposit account and creamed off the interest. Look it up. ![]() |
10cirenoh:No, I didn't, but the senate in Shagari's govt did. $2.8 billion that was missing from NNPC was traced to Buhari's Midland Bank account in London. . . Shortly after that Shagari was overthrown by, guess who? As soon as Buhari had intimidated everyone involved and destroyed as much evidence as possible, he announced to the shock of the country that he was ready to resign. The rest is history. In the meantime, look up Vera Ifudu on google, she was the NTA reporter that read out the $2.8billa news on NTA; she got sacked as soon as Buhari siezed power, but won damages in a landmark case against her dismissal. http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&rls=com.microsoft%3Aen-gb%3AIE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7TSEA_en&q=Vera+Ifudu+buhari&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai= |
