Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, has been booed and shouted down by an angry audience for attempting to reel out the achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government. The drama ensued on Thursday at a town hall meeting/presidential debate organised by the Osasu Show Symposium in Abuja. Buhari had confirmed his participation at the presidential debate but neither put up an appearance nor sent in a representative. However, the Minister who was not part of the debaters, took to the stage to mock the candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar over his plan to privatise the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC. He alleged that Atiku’s plan of privatising the state-owned oil company was laced with corrupt intentions. Afterwards, he went further to attempt a reel out President Buhari’s achievements in office but was met with the resistance of the audience. The audience booed him and shouted ‘sit down!’ ‘sit down!’ for as long as Amaechi tried to speak in praise of the government. Overwhelmed by the apparent anti-Buhari chants, the Minister caved into the pressure and took his seat. DAILY POST reports that Presidential candidates who debated against one another included Oby Ezekwesili (ACPN), Atiku Abubakar (PDP), Donald DukeTope Fasua (ANRP), and Ali Soyode (YES Party), http://dailypost.ng/2018/11/22/crowd-embarrassed-amaechi-defending-buhari-lagos/ Lalasticlala

Minabere Ibelema It is a little over a month now since presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar chose Peter Obi as his running mate to a near universal applause. That is, outside the circles of the All Progressives Congress. Among the phrases that have been used to describe the choice are apt, deft and master stroke. I couldn’t agree more. Yet, reading all the accolades only made me wonder about the option of flipping the roles and having Obi as the presidential candidate and Atiku as his running mate. This is not intended to slight Atiku, but to explore Obi’s potential. Given the point of this column two Sundays ago about Nigeria’s politics of entitlement, flipping the ticket is, of course, an improbable proposition. Moreover, it would violate the rotational principle that cedes this electoral cycle to the North. Yet, there is ample reason for this flight of fancy. The Atiku/Obi ticket reminds me of the pairing of Barack Obama and Joe Biden in the 2008 US presidential election. The only difference is that in that case the presidential candidate was a young newcomer and his running mate was an older political veteran. That election was driven by the dynamic of this non-traditional pairing. The trailblazing Obama lit the fuse of excitement while the veteran Biden anchored the candidacy in the political traditions. It was an even greater masterstroke. Obama won the election against the odds by energizing electoral bases that were usually blasé about voting: racial minorities, young women and university students. Minorities and students in particular saw Obama as someone who truly represented them, a cut away from the usual. Moreover, Obama’s vision of a country that could transcend its historical and contemporary ills was inspiring and galvanising. It made those who had been on the margins feel they had at last become a part of the centre. And so, they turned out in droves to vote for him. Obi has much the same attributes as Obama and could have readily reprised the political magic. To begin with, they are both the same age, 57, though Obama was just 47, when he won the US presidency in 2008. They are both intelligent and articulate. And despite their social status, they retain the common touch. https://punchng.com/obi-could-have-reprised-obama/

POLITICS Defection tsunami hits Cross River APC, as Ita Giwa, BoT member, ex-envoy, others join PDP The All Progressives Congress (APC) Thursday, at the Municipal Council grounds in Calabar, suffered a serious political tsunami as a former senator and two-time Special Adviser to two Nigeria presidents, Princess Florence Ita- Giwa, returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Others who also washed their hands off the APC in the state with about 5000 supporters were the former Ambassador to Mali, Amb. Soni Abang, former APC Board of Trustee member, Barr Tony Odey, as well as the duo of 1992 legislators, Senator Patrick Ani and Hon. Ernest Irek among others. Ita Giwa, speaking at the event said: “I am back to ensure that the turn by turn policy is followed, as only zoning can sustain democracy without fight while creating opportunities for all to raise their heads.” Waxing philosophical, Ita-Giwa disclosed: “In over one year I went on that trip to APC, it wasn’t good for my body because a white goat loves no stain or dirt,” adding that “I feel guilty leaving this family as upon my return, so much love was shown to me and I was not shut out or looked down upon.” She added that the governor, Prof Ben Ayade, has performed so much magic which all must collectively return him back to sustain his vision aimed at repositioning Cross River and making it the envy of others. “I cannot fight Ayade because he made the hitherto abandoned Bakassi Local Government Area to be celebrated among the existing local government areas in the state and indeed Nigeria. I am back to sustain democracy, to join hands with Ayade to win elections, for the sustenance of carnival which is dear to me and for the governor’s industrialization drive,” Ita- Giwa intimated. On his part, Ambassador Soni Abang expressed happiness that he finally took the decision to return to the PDP. “My supporters and I are happy to be back home. I had within the past few years withdrawn from active politics because when you marry a wife with a problem, staying in the same house becomes a problem, not to talk of going into the other room.” According to him, “PDP is a great family and there is no way Uche Secondus will be a national chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku contesting as President and Prof Ben Ayade coming as governor or Senator Imoke urging me to come back to the fold and I will say no,” the former envoy noted. On his experiences during his stint with the APC, Abang disclosed that “while there, we couldn’t agree even on the party exco, we couldn’t conduct our primaries, the party does not respect court orders and today the same party is trying to cripple our judiciary,” adding that, “the national chairman of PDP today has redefined and remodeled the party as evidenced in the last national convention adjudged as the most transparent in the country.” Another returnee, Hon Ernest Irek, said “it is only the PDP that has a reward system and anything that has no reward system is not a better option.” Lauding the programs and policies of Governor Ben Ayade which has endeared him and his team to return to the political family, Irek who was a 1992 House of Representatives member representing old Obubra Federal constituency said: “Your programs are programs of tomorrow, nobody will allow any senatorial district to cheat the other, we are back to our home and the time for business is now and we are going to deliver.” Former governor, Senator Liyel Imoke said he feels like a “contented old man to see the family gathered today as one. It takes the collectives to get results, as such, these key leaders who have returned to the fold are very fundamental in our struggle for 2019.” Imoke who applauded Ayade for accommodating the returnees, pointed out that for this to happen, it is a great effort aimed at uniting the political family. Receiving the returnees in the presence of the governor, Prof Ben Ayade, his deputy, Prof Ivara Esu, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, some members of the national leadership of the party, the PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, assured them that, “the party is for all, for the entire people, you are all co-owners in this party and everyone is a leader.” He applauded Ayade for his industrialization drive in the state, maintaining that the vision to decouple Cross River from its dependence on federal allocation while creating jobs for the teeming unemployed youths must have endeared the returnees to come back. While extending hand shakes with the political bigwigs who returned to the PDP, Secondus said: “On behalf of the national leadership of our party, we welcome you back to your home and I can assure you that all your rights and privileges are this day restored unto you. http://dailypost.ng/2018/11/16/defection-tsunami-hits-cross-river-apc-ita-giwa-bot-member-ex-envoy-others-join-pdp/

Imagine the setting where there is Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau in one camp contesting against President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 in Kano State? The result, at the end of the day, would not only be intriguing but very close to call. That was what the Liyel Imoke Reconciliation Committee set up by the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), had struggled to achieve at the time they set forth to lobby Senator Kwankwaso to resign from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to join them in the PDP a few months ago. They wanted to cut down the overwhelming size of Buhari’s sphere of influence in Kano State and make it impossible for him to round up easy votes from the state as he did in the 2015 Presidential elections – votes which saw him walk causally to victory against former President, Goodluck Jonathan. But along the line, and as fate would prefer, soon after the committee secured the membership of Senator Kwankwaso, the party’s train derailed from its own track, losing the golden opportunity to keep the likes of Mallam Shekarau and Senator Kwankwaso together. The eventual consequence is that President Muhammadu Buhari probably remains an unchecked tsunami as far the 2019 Presidential election is concerned in Kano State. In fact, if his recent result of 2.9 million votes from his primary election is to be relied on, then there is nothing that can stop him from an excellent performance in the state come 2019, pundits say. He may not equal his previous electoral post, it was further gathered, but he would surely run away with victory over his opponents, Daily Sun learnt. However, his opponents are of the view that, the fact that the PDP Presidential candidate is a Muslim and a Northerner like Buhari, the factors have scaled down the advantage of President Buhari in the state. This, investigations revealed, may appear true to some extent. But there are factors that would still give Buhari an edge in the imagination of the voting public in the state. One of these factors is that Buhari has the unflinching support of the state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje who mirrors his own fate and survival to that of the president and he is out to do anything humanly possible to promote the Buhari Presidency in Kano. Ganduje is supported by the likes of Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, who has a good share of the Kano votes on a good day, and Senator Kabiru Gaya, an old time war horse, who knows his terrain too well in Kano South. More than anything, Buhari has the blind devotion of many ordinary people of Kano State, who do not understand the issues and do not want to understand them either. They simply relate to the 2019 presidential polls from the point of ethnicity and hold tight to the fact that the president must come from their own state or their geopolitical zone. Unknown to many Nigerians, Buhari has been silently over supportive of the yearnings of Kano State. His footprints are dotted everywhere, but subtly shielded from the national glare, so as not to offend the sensibilities of rest of Nigerians. This would come counting for him in 2019. This would count for him before the Kano voters. Kano also symbolizes the political interests of the core north or, put differently, Kano assigns to itself, without an election or an appointment, the role of the custodian of core Northern interests in the dynamics of Nigeria politics. Many people here still see the candidacy of the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar as a creation of the south and therefore, a dangerous phenomenon to their political fortune and future. For instance, some of the campaign programmes of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar that delight the people of the south and the people of Middle Belt, like restructuring, are very unpopular in Kano State. This would count in favour of Buhari in the state in 2019. Many voters in Kano also feel that presidential poll is a battle between the North-West and North-East. To the outsiders, the north is a united whole. But within and among Northerners It is not exactly so. Not all Northern states are equal. Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is from the North-East, Adamawa precisely, and certainly, his political fortunes are gravely undermined in Kano State by his background. That Atiku has very few friends in Kano State was clearly demonstrated in the recent past when he defected to the PDP. He was derided and called all manner of names. Almost regularly, he was the topic of abuse on most media platforms – radio, television, social media and even in the informed writings of many scholars from the state. This could only suggest that his rating in the race is low in Kano. That is not to say that Atiku has no chance at all in Kano State. His appointment of Senator Kwankwaso to take charge of his campaign in the North-West Zone is well conceived. No matter what is said about the political excesses of the former governor of Kano State, he has garnered a huge followership, which if deployed in favour of Atiku’s bid in the state, would make a meaningful difference. The PDP Presidential candidate has done relatively well for himself in the state as the Vice President of Nigeria. A good number of people in the APC today were originally members of his political camp. There is no doubt that they would work for him. One of the greatest drawbacks to the popularity of Buhari in Kano State is his growing image as someone who breeds poverty and hunger in the land. It is assumed by many that under his charge, times are harder. Many people in Kano, like the rest of Nigerians, feel hugely betrayed by the unfulfilled hopes of his reign. Would they deny him their votes on the grounds of this? Only time will tell. Analysts believe that if Alhaji Atiku, a man seen as “an easy giver”, should leverage on the poverty narrative in the state, he would pick a number of good votes. Atiku would also amass a majority of the support and political resources of non – indigenes in the state. With an improved security situation in the state, over 90 percent of them are not travelling home for the elections. In addition, many of them, who previously had no interest in election matters, have made efforts to be registered for the 2019 elections. All these may count for Atiku in the end. http://sunnewsonline.com/2019-presidential-election-how-kano-may-likely-vote/ |
A letter to Peter Obi by a Kaduna indigene who served in Anambra State during his NYSC. An Opened Letter to Mr. Peter Obi Angwal Village, Jaba LGA, Kaduna State. Wednesday, 14th November, 2018. HE, Peter Gregory Obi PDP Vice Presidential candidate. My dear Mr. Obi, Compliments of the citizen with warm regards. How are you and the season of politicking? Hope both you, Atiku nd your families are doing great. I wrote in response to your reply to one "Gov. Nasir Ahmed Elrufai" of Kaduna state who in his usual fashion of half truths alleged that you were a tribal bigot sometimes ago when u were a governor as a result of a story he probably cooked up regards being restricted to move around and forment trouble in Anambra state a certain time he came for election. I was pained at first when I saw on a newspaper that you dignified Mal. Nasir with a reply but became happy reading the first paragraph of your reply that carried the clause "my attention has been drawn to" suggesting that you didn't even notice he said something until you were notified. Sir, Mal. Elrufai for donkey years had been known to have launched media propaganda against many but eventually chickens out when facts are brought to the public for scrutiny. He gains a lot of political capital in churning half truths and lies, hatred, daylight deception and no wonder, Former President Olusegun Obasanjo described him as "A pathological liar" in his book ; "My watch" ; a clear description of how Nasiru's Modus operandi had always been. Sir, You'll remember that; - On, April 7th , 2017, Mal. Nasir Ahmed Elrufai launched a media war on the very distinguished speaker of the house of representatives ; RT.Hon. Dogara Yakubu after he personally invited him to Kaduna for a state function. This media war led to the display of pay slips to the public where the governor claimed that he earns less than 500,000 naira a month. When Dogara challenged him about the over 4.5 billion naira he collects monthly as security votes, he chickened out and claimed he used the security votes to buy CCTV cameras scattered across Kaduna State; a development residents of Kaduna are yet to see to this moment. Dogara brought facts to the public and since then, we never heard from Elrufai regards the matter. - On 8th September, 2017, Mal. Rufai attacked the former minister of women affairs, Haj. Jummai Alhassan. He claimed that she never supported Muhammadu Bihari's candidacy and that they warned Buhari not to appoint her as a minister but Buhari went ahead and did. From the stories we read, we learnt that Jummai Alhassan replied Elrufai with a threat to expose him regards his role in the bokoharam kidnap of School girls to discredit the Jonathan's government. Whatever that meant, we were surprised not to have received another reply from Rufai as he went numb with tails between the legs after the alleged threat. - On 1st October, 2015, Elrufai launched another media propaganda claiming that in the former government of Jonathan , N13billion was spent in 2011, N15billion in 2012 and N14billion in 2013 and N22billion allegedly spent in 2014 for Independence day celebration while only 70million naira was spent in 2015 by the Buhari led Administration. He was replied by Abubakar Sulaiman, the immediate past Minister of National Planning during the Goodluck Jonathan presidency. Abubakar told Nigerians that Elrufai had lied as a breakdown of the spending for this event between 2012 and 2104 goes thus; 2012-107.6million; 2013-45million and 2014 had 180million. Mallam Elrufai knowing that his claims were false, kept mute and never replied again. - Most recently, Mr. Elrufai told everyone that it was President Muhammadu Buhari that asked him to punish Shehu Sani for being disobedient to their party. In less than 24 hours, the presidency came out in clear terms to clear the air, affirming that their is no truth in what Elrufai had said. If one is to dwell in many of the inconsistent statements of Elrufai, a whole book with twelve chapters will be written but to safe time, let's embrace the description to which our Former President Olusegun Obasanjo described him with; The pathological liar. Dear Mr. Obi, we thought Elrufai was going to compare his achievements with yours as: 1. Education; Your educational reforms in Anambra state is unequalled as i am a witness to how you heavily invested in infrastructural development in public schools. You were concerned about developing ICT skills among young students, no wonder no public secondary school in Anambra state has less than a hundred computers in their computer labs with First grade hummer buses for all the secondary school in Anambra state for easy transportation. As a corp member back then in Anambra, I learnt of how you always had periodic meetings with class monitors of secondary schools in Anambra for the sake of monitoring and evaluation and how you expressly gave them permission to call you directly report any problem in their various schools. Your educational reforms yielded positive results as Anambra state emerged best in WAEC back to back during your period as governor. Elrufai on the other hand spent 10bn naira for a wasteful school feeding in 8months on 'moi-moi', fried yam, Jolly Jus drinks and the likes which all ended in the suckaway with results of Kaduna state coming 12th position in WAEC in 2017 against the 10th position they were in 2014. 2. Roads: Sir, your Administration paid a lot of attention to construction of roads across Anambra state and because of you, Anambra today has the highest kilometres of state owned roads in Nigeria. The Awgbu bridge which is the longest bridge built by a state government in Nigeria, links my friend's community; Obi Trice Emeka. Elrufai cannot boast of any 10km of standard road, anywhere around Kaduna State. 3. Security: While you invested heavily on local security, empowering Vigilante service to reduce any forms of killing, Your friend in Kaduna state mobilised funds to go as far as Chad and Mali to appease foreign mercenaries without any permission from the Minister of foreign affairs, DSS, Defence ministry etc an act of insubordination, treasonable felony, Novel arrogance that yielded no results as the kidnap along Kaduna-Abuja highway, Kachia-Kaduna road and the killings in southern Kaduna had heightened. 4. Debt Profile: While you left Anambra state with 75billion naira for the next government, Elrufai tirelessly seemed to collect a loan of $350 million that will take Kaduna State about 50 years to repay; something he had always criticised when he was in the opposition. 5. Modest Lifestyle: Your life as a governor in Anambra was characterised by modesty. In Kaduna today, we know more about Elrufai's children and their flaggerant Lifestyles; snapping in parties abroad with white women and posting on social media while insulting and denigrating poor Nigerians. It will interest you to know that we don't know the names of Ahmed Makarfi children, Namadi Sambo''s Patrick Yakowa 's or even Ramalan Yero's who were all governors in Kaduna but even kids on the street today know the likes of Bello Elrufai, Bashir Elrufai and the likes for the flamboyant and wasteful Lifestyles they live. Sir, if Elrufai says he was stopped from moving around in Anambra state during election, it is not new to us as he claimed he was also stopped from moving around in Ekiti elections if 2014. This affirms the possibility of Security operatives seeing him as a trouble maker, crisis entrepreneur that has capability of erupting a crisis where he lands. Elrufai seeks to compare himself with your personality; something President Buhari himself will never attempt to. In view of this, I will kindly advise that you pay no attention again to any tantrums Elrufai will throw in the near future as it is only a trick to draw attention to himself. Your integrity and statesmanship is bigger than 50 Elrufais combined in this life and the one thereafter. Until we meet, accept assurances of my highest esteem. Kind regards. These are trying times for the ruling All Progressives Congress and its National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole. Keen watchers of the unfolding political events within the party are of the view that Oshiomhole’s clamour for party supremacy and discipline may have endeared him to his staunch supporters, including President Muhammadu Buhari. However, his combustible personality and inflexible approach to issues have apparently alienated him from the majority of party faithful, particularly some APC governors. The seething crises in the various state chapters of the party have further demonstrated that the former Edo State governor may be riding an unwilling horse. Oshiomhole rode to power on the wings of great expectations following the exit of his predecessor, John Odigie-Oyegun, who was literally hounded out of office. Having secured the endorsement of the President and a former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Oshiomhole’s emergence as party chairman was a done deal. At his formal declaration in Abuja, Oshiomhole pledged to make the APC the envy of other parties in Africa, saying he would always ensure a win-win solution “rather than a loser and a winner.” He added, “If I am privileged to become the chairman, I would help the executive and the legislature to find common ground to win together. Let me say that I think with all sense of modesty that I am well prepared for this kind of role.” He added that as a former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, he had the skills to negotiate, persuade and “make consensus.” Oshiomhole’s fight to stamp his authority on the party started quite early. From his well publicised face-off with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, whom he threatened to sack from the party for not constituting the board of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund to the threat to sanction the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, for a similar offence. He said, “If the President condones disrespect for his office, I will not condone disrespect for the party. And when we expel the minister, we will prevail on the President that he can’t keep him in his cabinet; people who have neither respect for his own decisions nor have respect for the party without which they would not have been ministers. No minister is above the party and they have taken undue advantage of the President’s fatherly dispositions.” The rippling effect of what was considered as his intemperate outbursts had yet to abate when he launched a verbal offensive against Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State for defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party. Describing him as a failure, the APC Chairman said he was relieved that the governor left. Ironically, Oshiomhole had persuaded Ortom not to leave the party about a week earlier. “I am relieved as national chairman, and I believe that the leadership of the party in Benue is also relieved that Ortom has left the party and returned to the club he belongs, a club whose philosophy is to share the money and not develop communities,” he said. Like a warrior without an armour of discretion, the APC boss yet again got involved in a fresh political tango with the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, who had defected to the PDP. He issued torrents of threats against Saraki and admonished the APC lawmakers in the Senate to impeach the Senate President. In reaction, Saraki said “the day two-thirds of our members no longer have confidence in us, we will leave this place.” Oshiomhole, however, insisted that Saraki should immediately resign as Senate President or be impeached. “The only way Saraki can avoid impeachment is for him to do what is honourable, which again leads to the issue of character,” he stated. There were reports that the party chairman met secretly with the APC lawmakers where they perfected plans to impeach Saraki. The invasion of the National Assembly by operatives of the Department of State Services on August 7 was attributed to some Presidency officials in cahoots with Oshiomhole to pull the rug from under Saraki’s feet. The plot failed and the then Director-General of the DSS, Lawal Dauda, took the hammer for the failed conspiracy. The loud accusations and protests that trailed the congresses which had resulted in litigations had put the chairman in a tight spot and provided the oil needed to roast him. Disenchanted party leaders and members in Bauchi, Zamfara, Rivers, Ogun, Imo and other states have either called for his removal or were working with other aggrieved colleagues to ease out the APC chairman from office. https://punchng.com/the-fire-threatening-to-consume-oshiomhole-and-apcs-chances-in-2019/

As Nigeria closes in on 2019 general elections, political calculators and observers have started looking at deciding factors and acceptability ratings amongst two leading frontline presidential contestants; President Muhammadu Buhari and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar. Some analysts who based their permutations on certain factors have presented a rough picture of how 2019 presidential elections will be won and lost across the regions and narrowed down to states. Key factors considered in generating the statistics include but not limited to power situation, infrastructure developments, state of insecurity vis-à-vis campaign promises, economy, level of perception on national peace, corporate governance and rule of law.
