Iamgrey5: Why should we be far better off?
The late Hugo chavez implemented socialist programs that significantly backfired after the unexpected crash in the global oil prices.
Nonetheless, Venezuela has better infrastructural facilities than Nigeria. Venezuela refines its own crude oil for domestic use unlike Nigerian. The only similarities between Nigeria and Venezuela is the Dependant on imported items.
These key issues i have raised above accounts for most of the problems we face in Nigeria today. it also a testament to the mismanagement of the previous governments before Buhari.
If Buhari didn't implemented important economic policies and austerity measures when he became the president of Nigeria and continued with the waste like experienced under Jonathan and those before him, Nigeria will have been worse off.. What happened when Buhari was the head of state. Same recession? Was that oil slump too ? The people are the problem of this country. |

Name the waste under the last govt and the austerity measures under this gov't. Fyi, this gov't you said is implementing saving mechanism is the one using more than twice the amount the previous gov't used for elections that were laudable. So much for saving and waste huh?! |

BluntBoy: It is the structure, not the leadership per se.
I will repeat, bring all the past presidents of America to govern Nigeria and they will fail.
I am sure that some of our past presidents had noble intentions until they got there and saw the reality of things. We must first begin with the structures that slow down decision making and we must work toward pressuring the reviewing of huge, unnecessary expenditures, especially the salaries that public office holders earn. I heard that a local government chairman in Nigeria goes home with a total of at least a million naira every month. These are things we should work on. Buhari was the sole administrator some years back. No one stopped him! What did he do ? Oga have a good day. It's funny how dweebs come over here thinking anyone that isn't supporting Buhari is a fan of last administration. Government of dweebs and for dweebs. |

It was long paid for and the report says it's a loan from China? You need education. Chinese loans used Chinese contractors to work. Which means they do the work thereby having the Chinese govt pay their contractors to do the work. So yes, it cant affect the project as it's a sealed deal. Now GTFO! |

BluntBoy: But we are not doing badly in relations to another country that relies heavily on oil export.
It is not Buhari's fault that the country is not in the rank of the United States (if that is what you mean by "we could have been better" . The man has barely spent 3 years in government. Barely ? When power hasnt added a single watt? Things should be moving...insecurity wasn't this bad. Was it ? It's funny how you think 3 years is not enough. That's because this govt is slow and have almost nothing to offer. Take it or leave it. Boko haram is still here and you think 3 years is not enough. You want 29 years ? This year has ended already. Name one thing beneficial to the whole country that Buhari is doing. Healthcare has no road map. Education has been forgotten totally. We don't even know the minister of trade and investment anymore. Not Zimbabwe style invasion that may satisfy justice, but leave the economy messed up You know Africans are worse at doing business ? We always have emotions and attachment run over everything. Wise countries would know that as long as it's In the interest of the country, then interest comes first. Not some ancestoral lands that you have no how to make use of. Funny thing is, credit for farmers will also deplete as creditors wont risk inept farmers having access to credit facilities. |

Yes, whites have stolen most of the land, but the same white farmers earn lots of forex for the nation. And there aren't enough qualified black farmers to replace them(and I say this with sadness, and as a Pan Africanist) my strategy should have been tax them. It's not their fault that they inherited the land. Apartheid land tax should have been better. Some of the Whites are now moving to Russia where Putin is ready to welcome them. |
Business › Re: Venezuela’s Bolivar Currency Worthless As Inflation Hits 1 Million Percent by BedLam: 9:13am On Jul 29, 2018 |
theoldpretender: Nigeria.under Buhari did several things differently from Venezuela
1.Restricted imports.
2.Saved forex. Between 2015 and now, our reserves went from 28bn to 41bn $. Venezuela is down to less than $12bn.
3.Exchange rate won't go back to previous rate till oil goes above $140 per barrel, which is what we need it to be to balance the books.
4.When oil prices crash, oil countries take.heavy loans to stay afloat. When prices go up, we need to pay those loans back. Another reason why we don't have forex to buffer the naira.
5.Bubu is making one mistake though, subsidy. Yes, Bubu pretends there is no subsidy, but the truth is we have a subsidy that is keeping fuel below 145naira. And no deregulation means no investment, no new jobs,.no. added economic benefit.
6.One way we are not like Venezuela, we still have a lot of manufacturing at home, plus many of our manufacturers have learned to source raw materials locally. Example, we make toilet paper and beer in Nigeria, Venezuela has closed.down most of its beer and toilet roll factories(the last ones.closed a year ago) Bros oil price slumping is not what caused it. It's govt policies and pure socialism cum tyranny. You don't give credit to someone who's doing 2 when he can do 20. There shouldn't be any basis for Nigeria to be compared with Venezuela. We have the best technocrats you can find in all industries but what do we do with them? |
Business › Re: Venezuela’s Bolivar Currency Worthless As Inflation Hits 1 Million Percent by BedLam: 9:10am On Jul 29, 2018 |
BluntBoy: But we are doing better than Venezuela, so what is your problem? You giving credit to something so bad and horrible is my problem and the fact that you think we are doing better than Venezuela and that's okay. I strive for excellence and I will never compare myself to Venezuela even if we are 10 times better than them. We should be far off! But you think Buhari is doing good just because we are better than Venezuela. It's okay that you ignored the last point I raised and I understand that subtle message too. Good luck with mediocrity. |

theoldpretender: Zimbabwe problem is that they handed over white farms, a major hard currency earner to untrained black farmers.
Of course economic collapse results.
If we want a Zimbabwe type economy, that means we sack all oil workers and hand over their jobs to people without the training. South Africa might be heading this way soon. |

BluntBoy: But when oil prices dropped sharply in 2014, the government was suddenly faced with a gaping hole in its finances and had to cut back on some of its most popular programmes.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-36319877 That was the best approach but did Buhari cut anything?instead we are still borrowing, importing grasses from Brazil, planning to build ranches for fulani marauders that adds no dime to the Govt coffers, foreign trips abroad and unlimited number of advisers for their wives. Let's not even talk of failed feeding programs used for siphoning money. All of these are crystal clear boondoggle! But the question is, why didn't the currency ballooned Mike we have now. Suddenly 360 is now the new stable. |

BluntBoy: That is what I keep on telling people. Buhari has tried well in managing the oil crisis. Some people think it is not an achievement but they forget that Nigeria is a third world country and for her to have survived the crisis, then the president deserves praise. Idiot. Venezuela woes aren't from oil slump but bad leadership and the fact that they run a tight system of socialism. Get sense for once! What did Buhari managed ? Was that the first time oil prices went south ? Now that we have oil bounced back, why is the exchange rate not going back to previous bracket ? One more time, get sense! |

Op is right. Even people that earn over 100k annually in some states are considered low income earners. Because rent is expensive, you have health insurance, credit cards, auto insurance, mortgage loan to pay. Most times the only savings they get is the retirement package called 401k which you cant collect until you retire or you pay a fee if you want to collect it early. Only frugal people can save their way to a reasonably sustainable income bracket.
I always wonder why Nigeria isn't developed and I realized somethig; when they resources are unavailable, we complain about lack of resources but when we have them, we just want to be comfortable and enjoy.
You'd be surprised the number of asians that own businesses, the number of Israelis who are equally sharing the same resources with Africans but you barely see an African inventor blazing a trail. Even those that went to the same Ivy league as Zuckerberg just want to work and enjoy life why being paid. This is why we won't develop, we aren't risk takers. We love excess comfort, which kills. Most Asians get to the US via H1B Visa but that's so unlike Africans. They work for a time and develop their own businesses, Nigerians both home and abroad are useless to this nation.
You can only find us doing meager businesses like Salon, restaurants which we cant even grow to global chains. It's sad! |
