Hello RuudVanNisteroy,
Thanks for all you do here on this thread. I would like to ask about the possibility of an individual obtaining a permanent residence permit with a professional job outside his field of study.
That is, would I be granted permanent residence in a country after getting an IT job (e.g Germany), when my Master's course of study is Geophysics?
Thanks in anticipation of your kind response. |

Mrves111: I wonder why some of us are discouraging the one that studied geology to change to IT course related. Do you think that people studying geosciences, especially geophysics are not being taught on how to use IT applications in the interpretation of geophysical problems. There's a wide use of applications like python, Ubuntu, Matlab, etc in deep machine learning, geophysical inversion, seismological studies. Note that machine learning with the used of the various algorithm model is vital in understanding facies distribution, identification of both structural and stratigraphic traps in oil exploration , subsurface exploration, earthquake studies, geothermal energy, etc. The guy that studied geology have a wide range of opportunities in this modern world relating to understanding the subsurface. I will appeal to us to know facts before discouraging anybody. Thank you Thanks for posting this |

Travel › Re: Diary Of A Nigeria Student Living In Saint Petersburg, Russia. by BelieverDE: 11:42am On Feb 09, 2020 |
TochiPhotos: Good morning guys, I hope everyone is doing well.
I'll start today's update with some upsetting news.
A Nigerian guy got scammed by a Russian girl last week and I'm so angry about that.
So here is what happened.
The Nigerian guy is new in town and he doesn't know the city very well and also doesn't know the antics and mischief of some scammers in this city. Like most major cities in Europe, Saint Petersburg has people that run scams that target tourists so in this particular case, the Nigerian guy met a girl on the street, he thought she was a normal girl and he was so excited he met someone that speaks good english.
They got talking and and the girl suggested they go to a bar and have a drink (mistake number 1) if you're new in any city in Europe, never let any random person take you to a bar, club or restaurant. I will explain why later.
Unknown to the guy, the girl works for an organized syndicate that targets foreign tourists. What they usually do is use beautiful girls to set traps and lure tourists to bars and clubs and run up crazy bills on the person's name and the bar, club or restaurant will give them a percentage later.
To cut the long story short, the girl took the guy to a bar, the guy had a few shots but the girl was busy running up bills without the guy's knowledge.
After everything, the bill arrived and it amounted to over 40,000 rubles which is around N250,000.
My guy was confused and he didn't know what to do. Another mistake he made was paying the bill instead of calling me immediately. I guess he panicked because they probably threatened him. He only told me the following morning and I was so upset because it was already too late to do something.
So this is for everyone that intends to visit Russia or any European city in future. Please beware of such scams and tricks, they are common and in Russia especially you can't do much if you fall into their trap cos they usually work with organized crime syndicates.
Below is a picture of the crazy bill they gave the guy.
They charged him 3000 rubles twice because the girl took the microphone and sang karaoke and she didn't even ask him before doing it.
The entire thing is ridiculous. I felt very bad for the guy but I guess he has learnt his lesson. Sucks that he had to learn through the hard way. Thanks for the heads up |

mrphysics: Hi guys, it's been a while. I must admit, it's been tough . The French Engineering Schools are tough and mine seem to take everything personal. .
We are finally done with first semester classes and exams, almost 6 months of intensive studies and exams. Here, we write exams while lectures are on going. The end of one course becomes the beginning of another.
It's been really tough, having lectures from 8am to 6pm everyday except Thursdays (8-12pm) is something I never expected. But thank God it's becoming over and we honestly hope the activities of the next semester gives us a breathing space.
Research project if very important in my school. Infact, every semester, we will do one project and submit an academic paper, I guess the purpose is to groom us on how research is done in sciences. On Monday, we will be defending our project and submit our papers before month end. This makes it 4 documents and reports I have to submit before the end of the month.
So briefly, I will be sharing with you the lessons I have learned and also share the intriguing stories of our niche, the Nigerian perspective and the international view of the industry.
So welcome back and I hope to make it interesting for you again. Please, when you are done with the reports you have to submit, don't forget to share the lessons you learned about both views of the industry. Thanks in anticipation |

mrphysics: Natural background radiation pose no risk to us because they are so low. Don't forget that we as humans are also radioactive. In fact we are told that the natural radiation in France is currently higher than some parts of Fukushima where the nuclear accident happened. Same part that the government is begging people to return and they are refusing, yet the radiation level here is higher.
It is about perception, it is about being bias, it is about the press too. You are radioactive, the next person with you is also radioactive, this level of activity is not dangerous to the health.
However, induced radioactivity from power plants, and oil drilling sites is harmful to the body. Quite educative! Many thanks |

ninja4life: I also don't think the problem affecting oil vandalism will apply to nuclear power plant, as there's little of direct economic value to be gotten by raiding a nuclear plant. How sure are you? Any layman could be paid millions to go steal nuclear rods from the power plant. Would the nuclear plant be made very secure? How sure are you that that there wouldn't be tribalism and nepotism wouldn't be the order of the day when people are being employed? Would erudite scholars be considered first for employment? |

Why you guys are discussing about electricity production from NPP, I attended this technical program today.
Thanks to MrPhysics for reminding me about this program today by discussing about NPP.
The moment the speaker gave instances on how we adsorb radiation from common sources like Ray's from sunlight, smoking of cigarettes, eating of bananas, potatoes, etc my mind flashed back to you.
MrPhysics, I would love to ask, since we have natural background radiation in rocks, don't you think the radiation emanating from such rocks is harmful to workers on the rig? |

Goztino: Hello everyone, I finally met with the career adviser of my school, a young and beautiful lady. She asked me why I want to leave a prestigious school like RWTH Aachen University to start a BSc program at 29yrs old? I told her that I want a degree with which I can easily get professional job after graduation, a degree that has more opportunities in Germany and that's why I want to change to computer science. She said that there are opportunities in my course and most courses in Germany if I possess the right skills and speak the langauge well, that I don't necessarily need to start afresh from BSc. That even if I want to go into IT field, I should learn the skills of interest somewhere in Germany or even online while still undergoing my MSc program, that German companies usually employ you base on what you can do and that's why you see graduates of Microbiology working in the IT firm simply because they possess the right skills. She said that RWTH Aachen university is among the best schools in Germany with all the facilities at my disposal to learn and become an employable person and also has a good link to the industry, that I shouldn't waste that opportunity. She asked me if I have started learning German langauge and I said yes, she replied ''TOLL, if you learn at least one level every semester, that will be atleast B2 before 2 years which meets up the entry requirement of all vacancies'' She ended the discussion by saying that Germany welcomes everyone but selects the good ones, that if I want to be selected, I must be good in what I do.
I have never seen a young girl such wise and calm in speech. I think I will book another appointment with her sef Thanks for sharing, Goztino! What the career advisor said is plausible! There are some persons who studied Applied Geoscience/Geophysics and are working as Field Engineers over there in Germany. In fact, a Master's student from ETH Zürich (a Swiss) came to do his internship in Nigeria and told me about the Joint Master's program. In his words, "Programming is a piece of cake for those guys in Geophysics department" That is the reason you always find some Geoscientists in the data science field, because all they do is basically making predictions from an observed set of data. Whoever said the sky was the limit probably didn't know there was a universe. Kudos, Goztino! I'll see you at the top. |

StudentsNG: I had my banner adverts for data analysis scattered all over UNIUYO campus and within months I had a female student friend who liked me very much, she became my partner. She uses her popularity on campus to get students who want to have their projects analyzed. We charge them and handle the whole of their chapter 4. Money from this alone is bigger than the monthly allowance x4. Find something you can do and create a market for it and you won’t have problem saving your allowance.
Again make sure no pretty girl is somewhere dipping hands into your pocket. I know of a female kopa that was able to save her allowance by following other guys to spend theirs. Don’t let girls deceive you. Make your resolutions and stand on it. Hello Sir, I thank God for making me see this wonderful thread and your Twitter handle. I am a PCM and would like to learn data analysis using Ms Excel; in fact, I have downloaded various PDFs to learn using Ms Excel. I also plan on learning Python and Tableau for data analysis in future. Could you please give me a guide on how to become a data analyst? I will be most grateful. Thanks in anticipation. |

Goztino: Xup everyone. It's few days to Christmas and I wish you all the best.
Germany is indeed a very good country and I keep falling in love with it daily.
Has anyone changed from a masters program to a Bsc program in a totally different department here? If yes, send me a PM let's discuss. Why do you want to switch program, Goztino? Why do you want to jettison your program for a Bsc in Germany? How about you transfer to RWTH Aachen University? Your course of study- Applied Geophysics is a joint Master's program with ETH Zürich (Switzerland) and TU Delft (Netherlands). Be an active member in EAGE (European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers) as well as other associations -SEG and SPE. SEG now receives applications for her Travel Grant to attend the SEG international conference and this is open to graduate students. Apply for it and broaden your horizons; connect with Researchers and top guys in the industry. If your passion is not anything related to the oil and gas industry, you could still find yourself opportunities in the Geothermal Energy Resources in Germany. Geophysicists also find themselves opportunities in the telecommunication industry due to their programming skills. If I may ask, why do you want to switch your program? |

Please is there anyone who studied/ currently studying Petroleum Geophysics at any Universität in Germany?
I would like to know how lucrative the course is over there. Most of the courses that is being offered by universities is Exploration Geophysics (with their emphasis on geodesy, electromagnetism, etc having no direct correlation with the oil industry). Please is there anyone with useful info to this question? |
