Below is what the Nigerian Senate had to say about Achebe. Maybe this is part of the reason Soyika is hurt, frustrated and bitter filled with envy for the father of the African literature.



Sen. Chris Ngige along with 107 other Senators sponsored a motion on the 'Death of Professor Chinualumogu Albert Achebe (Ogo N'abo of Ogidi)OFR, NNMA November 16, 1930 to March 21, 2013'. The motion captured the distinguished and internationally acclaimed late writer, Chinua Achebe, who was born in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The motion was seconded by Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu who described Achebe as an ‘Eagle’, which is a rare and acclaimed bird. He applauded the late Achebe, describing him as an 'Iroko tree' and a 'Literary Giant’. Deputy Senate Leader Abdul Ningi also spoke highly of Achebe, recognising him as the first writer to shed tremendous light on Africa’s civilization outside the two major religions of Islam and Christianity.

Sen. James Manager said when Achebe died, the entire world’s media covered his death, therefore even in death Achebe still took Nigeria’s name global. He described Chinua Achebe as a detribalised man who worked with Mallam Aminu Kano to found the People’s Redemption Party.

Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba said that Achebe was great as he prompted a debate on whether there could be such a discourse as African Literature. Achebe indeed showed that Africans could produce outstanding literature. Sen. Ndoma-Egba applauded Achebe’s power of imagination and yet simplicity.

Every senator who spoke had nothing but praise and admiration for the late writer. They included Ganiyu Solomon, Zainab Kure, Olusola Adeyeye and Uche Chukwumerije. The Senate agreed to send a delegation to Achebe's family and community and to name a monument after him. A minute silent was also observed in honour of him.

Also in the chambers, Sen. Ayo Akinyelure laid a ‘Report of the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions In Respect Of A petition From INSPECTOR EMMANUEL ELDIARE, On His Wrongful Dismissal by the Nigeria Police Force’.

All the above highlighted are pointing at one thing- Achebe the father of modern African Literature. Soyika should deal with this bitter truth before he causes himself heart attack over nothing.

Are you disputing that Achebe is not the African most influential celebrity? My friend google is your friend. Achebe represent the very best out of Africa. A role model for the entire African continent doubled with founder and father of the modern African literature. Its a feat no African, not to talk of Nigerian can dream of.

These are only two greatest African known by the outside world for their contribution to humanity.

The former South African president and anti-apartheid fighter,who spent 27 years in jail, "referred to Prof Achebe as a writer 'in whose company the prison walls fell down'",the statement said.

This has shown that Achebe remains the greatest African that affected lives all over the world. People all over the world tagged him the father of modern African Literature because of how is depth he works affected them unlike every other write of his time. It was learned that he did it to stem the tide of a possible military court martial into an insurrection he was planning to lead alongside his political associates at the time when it became evident that then Military President ,General Ibrahim Babangida was intending staying in power forever.
In a no-hold barred interview with FS Online recently,a grass root politician ,Mr Adebayo Adeyinka who lives within the College Road at Ifako-Ijaiye axis in Ogba ,a suburb of Lagos, Nigeria was livid with rage when he learned that a key politician connected to the issue was denying the incident.

He revealed that Chief Awolowo wanted to lead some kind of guerilla warfare or militant campaign against the government of President Babangida so that he can be overthrown through a popular or people -led putsch.
According to him , the Elder Statesman summoned a meeting of his core loyalists over the issue and this was even filmed so as to strengthen the extent of commitment of each of the politician that attended the meeting..
He pointed out that however unknown to all of those who were privy to this meeting and clarion call , Chief Lateef Kayode Jakande ,Former Executive Governor of Lagos State had a different plan as he betrayed them to the military .He Said:’ But unknown to them , Chief Jakande was planning to betray them, he went to President Ibrahim Babangida and promptly showed him the tape

“Papa Awolowo was invited for a meeting with President Ibrahim Babangida who was then staying at Dodan Barracks which was the seat of power as at then and the truth of his clandestine meetings was revealed to him by the gap –toothed General

“He gave Papa some options and that was for him to be ready to face a court martial , be ready to go to a prison or better still go on exile
“At this stage Papa felt instead of allowing some ambitious khaki boy to mess him up he should just pack it in and call it a day ,so Chief Awolowo decide to commit suicide so as to save himself from the ignominy of going to prison for the second time in his lifetime .

“But before he did this he called his core loyalists for a meeting ,before then he had called up Late Chief Bola Ige [Cicero],since the latter had a very strong understanding of the Hausa Language having had his formative years as a young man in Kaduna but discovered that the late Esa-Oke strongman was innocent after he was interrogated by Papa

“He called others for enquiries while asking them to tender the video cassettes of the meeting they all attended to discuss the plans to topple President Babangida for examination ,at this juncture Chief Jakande developed a cold feet as he could not produce his own copy of the video which was freely distributed to all that was present at the meeting previously before the betrayal and that was how the cat was let out of the bag

“So he cursed him at this point and pointed out that he will never have any form of relevance politically as far as Nigeria was concerned and till today members of the Awolowo Dynasty avoids him like a plague.
“I was their when the letter he wrote to the family to beg them for forgiveness over the unfortunate incident was read in the presence of all present ,if he continues to deny I am ready to confront him publicly again on the same issue as I can even remember that elders asked him to go to the grave of the late sage to plead for forgiveness
“When he was questioned he lied that the National Security Organization now State Security Services had visited his house to check on him and in the process took the tape in question but” Awoists” knew that this was a very weak argument as he did not inform their political group of this development before their enquiry on the subject
“That was how Senator Abraham Adesanya assumed the leadership of the Awolowo camp of Yoruba politics after the demise of the man ,he was not even so close to Awolowo during his lifetime like Chief Jakande and that was why many called him Baba Kekere on account of this cosy relationship
“Before he gave up the ghost , he said his prayers and then took the poison which killed him almost immediately but the public was not fully aware as they were given a different account of what happened.
“We were simply told that he died while he was brushing his teeth in his bathroom at his Park Lane,Apapa residence here in Lagos
“He was stupendously wealthy during his lifetime, infact there is know company at Oba Akran in Ikeja ,Lagos where he does not have at least a five percent equity, Dideolu Court in Ogba alone cannot be valued at less than N10 Billion ,that was the place that he had in mind to be his Seat of power if he was elected as Nigeria’s President.
‘He owned Shonibare Estate but the man he was using as a front and who later went to prison over some issues which Awolowo himself was privy to eventually laid claim to the estate

“He got all of this wealth due to a great measure of goodwill and tax waivers he gave to investors whenever they come to establish their business.
“Anytime you buy a bottle of Coca-Cola you are enriching the Awolowo Dynasty ,go to Ijebu Ikenne and you will discover that the price of a bag cement there is different from other parts of the nation due to the subsidy that the citizens enjoy on account of Awolowo who was their son and I hope you know that West African Portland Cement is in Ewekoro and not Ikenne.

The Cocoa House in Ibadan regarded by many as one of the major landmarks of Nigeria’s architectural history was built as a result of his economic blueprint which was targeted towards the emancipation of his people from poverty
He built the first stadium in West Africa , the Liberty Stadium ,Ibadan and he coined the name “Naira “for Nigeria’s official currency ,it was previously called Nigerian Pounds.
During the 1970’s ,he was very critical of Nigeria’s military expenditure insisting that more should be spent on development
He ran a free health care programme for children up till the age of eighteen years .

On his death on the 9th of May,1987 as a mark of respect for his legacies ,The University Of Ile-Ife which ironically he helped to build as Premier of the Old Western Nigeria was re-named in his honour as part of a post humous celebration of his life and times.
His portraits adorn public places in Nigeria especially in his native Yoruba land where he is seen as an icon.
His picture also adorn Nigeria’s one hundred naira note.
He has been described surprisingly by some of his greatest critics and even political opponents as probably the Best President Nigeria never had.

Do you mind mentioning your state so that we may match it with above two cities you mentioned. Awka is a hospitality city with UN masterplan that is streamling healthy development and planning with fascinating architecture and edifices same goes to Asaba. The fact is that the least town in the SE is over and above in advancement than all SW cities.

Benin is a rural town when you compare it with Onitsha. Benin is filled with shanties and mud buildings in the state capital. Show us residentials areas in benin and see if it will not make Onitsha look like New York.

This is best post that really depicted Benin as it is.
Its quite unlivable place with network of bad roads and ancient houses. The state should take cue from the type of modern highrise houses in Fegge or the low density Omagba estate all in Onitsha

Am in Awka now, but I will in be in Onitsha on sat for Easter shopping. I will def cruise round GRA, Nkisi and Hilview areas to take pics.

The last dec I visited the site of the 5 star hotel it was around 75percent completed.
Meanwhile contractors has since embarked work on the massive Shoprite facility very close to the hotel all in the heart of GRA.

Worthy of note is the fact that FUTA emerged the winner of the Southern African Zone (preliminary round to the African Final) a day before and lead Unizik and others in qualifying for the final by 4%. It was not surprising to see many Uni present impressed with the showing; some promising to raise the bar like FUTA in subsequent years. Many were surprised to see Unizik carry then day having came in second with a difference of over 4% to FUTA just some hours before then. The final results read Unizik 79.33% Helwan Uni Egypt 78.87%. FUTA 78.33% Uni du Tunis 4th Unilag 5th. 1% difference between the first 3 looks more like abracadabra and the competition felt more like a selection thereafter cos Unizik were unable to
do justice to the questions the panel raised while their closest rival managed to put up some impressive showing in that division and other glitches in the course of their presentation. IBA is a laudable program which should be encouraged but the competition has to be standardised.....a situation where one of the organiser were telling one of the competing schools (FUTA) "sebi u have won it b4 now, let another win" before the winner emerge leaves one with a bad taste; let alone the fact that Unizik was allegedly lead by a high powered team lead by their VC's wife whose daughter stayed till the end of the program. If the organiser get to read this, I will like them to know that they need to take the competition to the next level, first by doing accreditation where competing schools will send in their list of presenters before the programme with their curriculum vitae which can be vetted before and during the competition. This is necessary to prevent situations whereby school present a mixed team of undergraduate and post graduate for a competition that is solely for Petroleum Geoscience post graduate only; such anomaly was reported within the Unizik camp though unofficially. Another thing worthy of note is the composition of the panel; it will be better if each zone in Africa is represented on the panel unlike this year where all were Nigerian except for the 2 expatriates. I hope you won't see this as the ranting of an ant.....take the plus and see how you can find a way around the minus......you are doing a great job......IBA forever!
